"It'll never happen..."
Here's a fun little topic I've been thinking about recently, as I realised that it's been six years since Golden Sun: Dark Dawn was released, eight years since the last Final Fantasy Tactics game, and thirteen years since The Legacy of Kain: Defiance. It's very depressing when you think about it like that and you start to wonder if, despite there being potential for new instalments, you'll ever actually see them.
So. What are some games that you would like to see, but doubt that they'll ever happen for whatever reason, even though there is the potential for them to be developed? Conversely, how many times have you been surprised by games that you never expected to be released making an appearance? Were those titles everything you had hoped for, or did they make you wish that they'd never happened? |
While it may not be related to a game release, I'll just let off some steam. Having played so much Brutal Doom and Brutal Doom Project Brutality, id Software and Bethseda admitting that Doom 4 was inspired by those fan-made mods will never ever happen. They could try as much as they can to say that Doom 4 was greatly inspired by the infamous Doom Comic, but they'll never admit that it was Brutal Doom that inspired the level of violence in Doom 4.
Speaking of inspiring game mods, I might make a topic out of that. Also, Gearbox finally making a great FPS game to match with the ones being released for this year and probably the next few generations will probably never happen. Duke Nukem Forever and Aliens Colonial Marines have somewhat solidified it to me. Also, a Meloetta pokemon musical/DDR like spinoff game. That'll never happen... even though i'd love to see it, even if it was just some smart phone game or something. |
Phantasy Star Online 2 getting a NA release

It's becoming less and less likely that we see another WW2 Call Of Duty title. Everything has to be flying through the air stuff.

On topic. Dunno actually... we are getting God Eater, Kiseki games are coming, Zero Escape has awaken... so many improbable games have been announced in recent years, I feel like by now, we can get anything. But what I really strongly believe will not happen is something in similar situation as PSO2, yes, another SEGA gem, Shining Resonance, or any Shining game for that matter. Unless Shining games get PS4 ports, I don't see them as possible localizations due to dying PS3... even though Atlus is now part of SEGA which opened new localization possibilities. |
Shenmue III may have been announced, but until I have a receipt for it in my hands or email, I remain doubtful.

Taking all bets, who's counting on Mighty No. 9 to get delayed again?

An asymmetrical multiplayer game that's humans vs monsters where the humans don't easily win with any teamwork whatsoever.

This is one I don't think anyone else would really care about, but Boktai 3 getting and english localization. Or a Lunar Knights 2. I know that this will never ever happen unless hell freezes over, but I'm actually a really big fan of this series. The first Boktai is even my favorite game on the GBA. But the series was never very popular so... x:
Ah well. I can still download and translate Boktai 3. |
Xenogears getting remade. SO unlikely do to all the legalities involving Square and Monolith Soft. (Also, they've got their hands full with Final Fantasy. Probably for the best anyway.)
Xenosaga being continued or getting an HD re-release. Even though I want this to happen SO badly. Once again, Monolith Soft and the legalities. This time, with Namco. >< Xenoblade's the new darling nowadays, and that's cool and all, but I just prefer the previous two series far more. As for things that happened that I didn't expect... well, the existence of Pokken Tournament is one. And Kingdom Hearts. Seriously, Square Enix and Disney? That makes no goddamn sense and nobody in their right mind would've actually thought this would happen all those years ago. And these games are actually FUN and have a decent story. That surpassed my expectations, all right. I can't really think of any other types of games that surprised me, really. Game releases usually tend to be fairly predictable to me. |
Arcades. I mean sure fighting games and some other arcade games and cabinets still exist in some areas around the world but right now, I just don't see arcades coming back into the mainstream.
|
Thought I'd add a few:
Valkyrie Profile: Hrist. Where the Hela is Hrist's game?! Since the original game got retconned as Lenneth's on PSP, and the PS2's game was Silmeria's, I have been eagerly awaiting playing as the Queen Bitch of the sisters. I don't think it's going to happen somehow, and this is very upsetting. Covenent of the Plume was a far cry from a proper VP title. Luminous Arc Infinity getting a Western release. I shouldn't be surprised, since LA3 was never localised, but...god, this is depressing. Luminous Arc (less so the sequel) was one of my favourite DS titles. Tales of Vesperia on PS3 getting localised. Hahaha. I didn't much care for this one on the 360, so I'm not too broken up about it, but I would have liked a PS3 copy. Makai Wars. Although I think this is a poorly disguised inside joke at this point. Asagi would lose a lot of her character if she actually got her own game. Any continuation or re-release of Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem seems unlikely. It pops up from time to time, but I don't think anything will ever come of it. Considering this is probably the last horror game I played that was genuinely terrifying, I'm a mixture of disappointed and relieved by this. FFXII HD. I'm just about ready to give up on this. I don't count a re-released strategy guide or a slip-up of an individual at a concert introducing XII's composer when VII HD had just been announced as viable evidence. You have no idea how much this one frustrates me. XII is easily the best FF title and, as the only one not available on current generation titles, it NEEDS some form of re-release. Even just a PS2 classic re-release would be fine. Just gimme SOMETHING. Now, for some other stuff. I wasn't expecting Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness to become a thing. There was a lot of talk about The Last Hope being...well, the last hope, and there being no more Star Ocean after that. To see Integrity and Faithlessness announced, and to see it looking as good as it does (despite taking pages from the awful SO3's book, and having very odd naming sense) is like a dream come true. Whether or not it'll actually be what I hope it will be remains to be seen, but...eh, I think I can afford to be optimistic about this. For a change. NieR Automata was a huge surprise, too. NieR itself was a shock due to it being a continuation of Drakengard - no matter how indirect - but I'm amazed Square Enix are taking something amazing and actually doing something amazing with it. Square Enix doing good for a change is a shock. Square Enix have historically been fucking up literally everything they touch since FFXIII. Picking on Square Enix some more. Can I express some surprise at the existence and localisation of Bravely Default, too? This coming from a company who thinks classic turn-based JRPGs with job systems - games they established a reputation on, and are the sole reason their newer titles sell as well as they do - are a risk. That this was made at all is astounding, because apparently it goes against everything modern gamers enjoy. It's niche! Hahahahaha. Ha. I wish Golden Sun: Dark Dawn had never existed. I spent all those years pining for a continuation and I got THAT, and now I'm right back where I started: on the edge of a cliffhanger that will probably go unresolved! Ugh. UGH. I was actually really surprised that Hyperdimension Neptunia Mk. II got localised, too. Different times. The first game didn't do brilliantly - and rightly so, whilst the localisation was fantastic the gameplay was atrocious - and Mk.II itself...well, it made ME uncomfortable, and I'm pretty much immune to squicky Japanese cultural dissonance issues by this point. CFW Trick alone should have disqualified this game from ever reaching Western shores. I'm glad it didn't, as I love the series, but at the time I was quite surprised it was getting a sequel and WE were getting it. The fact that more titles are being localised is a constant source of surprise and delight to me, in fact. Growing up I remember hearing about all these Japanese games that looked incredible that I would never get to play. We had to petition to get the original Animal Crossing to come out over here, for crying out loud! Now we can even get titles like Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth if we petition hard enough, and even visual novels are getting physical releases on the PS Vita, which is as niche as it gets in Western territories, apparently. I would have said this sort of thing would never happen about five years ago. Whilst the AAA industry has grown more toxic, things have gotten a lot more diverse than they were five years ago, never mind ten or fifteen. |
Super Mario RPG 2. None of this spiritual successor bologna. A real sequel!

Brutal Metroid Prime. Yeah even if a dedicated fan somehow recreates Metroid Prime into a much more intense and graphically violent game than the original, it will instantly get a cease and desist order from Wintendo for associating their precious characters with some blood, violence, and intensity...

Zelda Wii U isn't going to happen...
Jokes aside, I am extremely disappointed that Shantae: Risky's Revenge was never released on eShop in Australia. They however are releasing a Director's Cut version on the Wii U, but I don't have one and am not planning on buying one so close to the NX release. |
I'll probably get brick'd for this but... Final Fantasy X-3. I think it could have some potential. They once said they they originally had ideas for Rikku as a summoner. I think this would have been kind of neat. Mostly considering how the al bhed aren't particularly liked. Not only that, but for those that have the international versions or the remastered versions of FFX/X-2, there's a special audio story that tells a tale. I can't remember all the details... but to me, I feel as though this would have made a great game.
Here's what I'm referring too: Spoiler:
I couldn't find an english version, so this will have to do. I really feel like this could be a nice game. I mean, look how many sequels they made for the series with Lightning? They have the ideas, but it's sad they never went through with them. :c |

I throughly enjoyed the MegaMan Battle Network series. Metroid Prime Hunters was a good game too. I would love to see sequels to these games

Every first person shooter that needs a more modern reimagining should be a "Brutal" version of it :DDD *********************** Speaking which what will never happen.... I'm firing shots at Capcom. I've already accepted that Megaman will never ever get a revival ever since Kenji Inafune left years ago.. Capcom vs SNK 3. Yep, CVS, the Fighting Game community's once biggest love material, which in this context means something that excites them more than life itself. Capcom vs SNK 2 was one of the more appreciated games in the FGC since not only it was the greatest fighting game crossover between franchises, but the game itself was a very interesting mix between the Capcom and SNK fighting games with the groove system. Considering how things are between licenses and stuff, its highly unlikely we will ever get a Capcom vs SNK 3. Tony Jaa's Stuntmaster. It could be like Jackie Chan's stuntmaster, but with MORE ACTION. MORE INTENSITY. I felt like saying this since well it would be really difficult for any game developer to capture the look and feel of any of the Tony Jaa movies. |
C'mon, how could you not be surprised for Shenmue III's announcement. After being in development hell for who knows how many years, and Sega and Suzuki never being able to get on the same page, who had any hope for the third game ever being made?
All those dead JRPGs franchises that I use to play during high school don't seem to be coming back any time soon. You know, Grandia, Shadow Hearts, Suikoden, Wild Arms, Baten Kaitos, and so on. I figured, Baten Kaitos in particular, would have had a third game by now, but Monolith Soft have so far decided against reviving it (it's been 10 years, man!) It's probably my most wanted sequel as the beauty of both games are still among my all-time favorites. |
