"Would you like to save the game?"

I bet you would. After all, you don't want to lose all that progress, do you? Or maybe you don't need to - maybe the game will autosave for you at random intervals. Or maybe you'll have to travel miles between check points, sweating all the while that one wrong move will boot you back to the start, laughing at all that wasted time, leaving you to trudge through the same sequence again...and again...and again.

So. How you do like to save your games - anywhere you like, or at designated points? Does not being able to save whenever you want delight you for the potential challenge and the knife's edge it puts you on, or infuriate you because you have to play the game in erratic chunks in the knowledge you could be wasting your time? Would you prefer to let the game do it for you at designated intervals so you don't need to worry about? Have you ever neglected to save when you know you should have and lost an immense amount of progress before? Ever had a save corrupt on you before?

Share your preferences, and your horror stories. We've all been there before. We're here for you.

This topic has nothing to do with the fact that I just lost two and a half hours of progress in a certain game and was inspired in no way by the crushing despair I feel because of it

Save anywhere (Interim save system) and quicksaves.

That's something i really loved with the older school first person shooters. Being able to save anywhere but at the user's own prompt. It was helpful and it was also something that needed to be used carefully such as those suspicious looking sections where a powerup like a Mega Sphere or a key item like a Blue Key is lying around, and suddenly get surprised by a horde of demons popping out of those monster closets. Also, nobody wants to quicksave when they are inches away from being blasted to bits by a Cyberdemon's rocket.

Also, the Warriors series had interim saves up there. Love it. It immensely helps with all of those unlockable stuff as well as those objectives that must be done. Samurai Chronicles deserve a mention with interim saves with how stupidly designed the conditions are in acquiring some of the 4th weapons. I'm looking at you SWC1's 4th weapons for Yukimura, Main Hero, and Ieyasu.

As much as these save systems are quiet abuseable, they were helpful. Sure they breakup the action and more often than not may end up in funny situations (like fighting that officer that you're supposed to KO in less than 10 seconds flat or else.. still looking at you Chronicles). And it was at the player's responsibility to make sure that one saves before a big battle.

How do I like saving?

Losing a few hours of progress multiple times before I start saving at every point possible.

So... game without auto-save is a danger to me =D Hence, I like auto-saves. I'm just way too lazy to think about saving =D

I flip flop when it come to how often I save, one side saving only when I need to quit and the other saving before and after every event, depending on how recent the last time I lost progress on. But that only applies to games that allow you to pick and choose when to save. For games that have save points, I save at every single one of them, often several time in a row, since I've lost progress before by the game not registering my save. (Didn't lose much but still.)
The only exception to the save every moment rule is if the device I'm playing on is going to die and I don't have the charger. Lost my entire save in a game when the battery cut out on me.

I prefer my saves to be either I can save anywhere or autosave. I don't mind checkpoints if they're not too far spread apart (which I think Undertale does fine saved for a couple instances). With autosaves, I like how in Child of Light it autosaves each time you finished a battle and whenever you find something.

Oh, there's one funny story how I played Pokemon Black for perhaps an hour without saving, and I went to the place where you get one of the fossils. I picked the wrong fossil, and because I forgo to save I lost some progress, lol.

I'll save anywhere in the Pokemon world, doesn't matter to me. When I was a kid, though, I thought every game saved the way Pokemon did (ie. you boot back up and your character is standing exactly where you saved). I was really angry when I played other games where the save function worked differently. I've adapted since then. :^)

I have been known to save a lot in video games. I recall I once saved over 200 times in one playthrough of Mass Effect 2. Speaking of the Mass Effect series, in the first game, if someone saves after doing 999 saves, it loops back around to save 1.

see... I love, LOVE, the ability to save anywhere. It's useful since I can save before a difficult part of the game and then reload it anytime I fail. At the same time, I usually forget to save half the time. o> Unless it's like Mario and Luigi: Dream Team where the save button is in plain sight all the time. Autosaves takes away the problem of forgetting to save, but I can't save before a difficult part and reload. Save points are often the worst option. Like, I don't forget to save, but I don't with autosaves either and I also can quit the game at any point with autosaves knowing that the game is saved. Plus, with the ability to save anywhere I can just save and quit, but with save points I have to go to the nearest save point and then save. Sometimes the game can be built with save points in mind and use them to great effect, but... It isn't often that we see a game like that.

I guess either Autosaves, or save anywhere. Doesn't matter to me. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The ability to save anywhere, prompted by me. See, sometimes I need to stop the game for whatever reason. And I like having that choice rather than needing to continue. Particularly if it's a game where I don't know when the next save spot is going to be. However, I'm not too fond of autosaves. I don't like putting control of when the game saves to the computer because I don't trust it. I've had bad experiences with autosaves and I just never know when it's going to kick in at the worst time. I usually just save obsessively a lot, but sometimes, I need to save at a specific point so I can restart the game and get a better result. Yes, people look down on this. But I don't care. I like it that way.

Loriania March 12th, 2016 5:44 PM

I save as often as I can now. In one game (forget which), I progressed pretty far, and the system lost power before I was able to save.

machomuu March 13th, 2016 9:09 AM

Whenever it's convenient or after something significant's happened.

In games like Elder Scrolls, Fallout, and Deus Ex, though- ohoh, I was a save-scummy bastard. Kinda regret it in retrospect, because it sort of nullifies consequence despite the fact that, more often than not, I'm trying to accentuate just that.

Lemme see...Horror Stories...Um...

There are probably some actually horrendous ones that I could mention, but...I think VLR is a good example. See, saving wasn't an every five-second thing for me and, generally, I'd be playing the game after a pretty long day filled with classes. And puzzles are hard and take time, so the fatigue is real. As a result, I'd generally be playing the game, lounging on my bed, with my 3DS (yep, 3DS) not connected to the charger, and after some time on a puzzle I'd start to...drift. Then, after falling unconscious, I'd wake up, 3DS in front of me with blank screens, and progress lost.

This happened at least twice. At least. Goddamn, I love that game.

Leviathan March 13th, 2016 9:13 AM

Saving before doing something stupid and reckless is the best kind of save. Hooray for instant roll back option.
However, saving after the fact when you've wasted so much in-game currency and tools trying to beat one dungeon or another?
Bad times, man. Bad times.

Killua March 13th, 2016 9:43 AM

Saving right before you are ambushed by a big monster in ff1 and get klled and is ambushed byb the same monster again when you reload, oh and the nightmares of losing to the half an hour each boss phases of chrono trigger. Uuuuuurc oh and once i misclicked and replaced my only save before falling o death.

El Héroe Oscuro March 22nd, 2016 9:25 AM

Haha I am so anal when it comes to saving :P The Fallout series is the prime example for my problem. I'm the kind of person who will quick save every few moments because I feel like I've made progress even though I'm only hoarding 20 new tin cans lol. Then it's a complete pain to go through all of my saves to figure out what save actually is the one which I need to load.

Yes I have a problem, but at least I've never lost any substantial progress (;

Dusk March 22nd, 2016 10:06 AM

After that recent incident in which I accidentally deleted my only save file in Xenoblade Chronicles, I now keep 2 save files when playing the game in case that happens again... (Also I should really not be staying up past 3 in the morning when playing games, or should at least pay attention to what the heck I'm doing when navigating save screens.)
