Mother Earth

How do you feel about the environment? Do you do anything for it, or do you not find it to be much of an issue?

I share a house, so I'm pretty used to having to watch how much energy I use, making sure I don't use too much water etc. My family is pretty big on the environment, so we make sure to compost what we can, use greener alternatives for travel and help out with any community projects like planting trees.

I thought that most people felt the same way, until I heard a conversation about it in class. Someone thought that technological advances would save the environment anyway, meaning that there's no need to care about it now. I guess you can say that it got me thinking.

I share a house with my parents. My dad has been trying hard to enforce us to save electricity, but it's hard. >< I'm not really used to doing it. We also do our part in recycling as well. Other than that though, we don't really do a whole lot. Oh! I forgot to mention that we also have a prius. It's not the best thing, but I know it does help the environment a lot better than most normal cars.

I'm a biology nerd. I love plants and animals and everything ecosystems. I'm also, to a lesser degree, a geology/geography nerd, so I love natural landscapes, their importance and their relation with ecology.

I love the environment and mother earth.

I try to do as much for the environment as I can. Saving water, energy and trying to minimize waste and trash. there's a cute app I sometimes use that helps you calculate your carbon footprint, it is very cool and lets you put things into perspective.

I live in the middle of the city, but I tend to my garden and have as much plants as I can. It is a breathe of fresh air, literally. I also dug a pond in my garden and since then, the number of birds in the area rose. Many bathe and drink there. Bees suck at the algae in the edge of the pond for minerals, Mosquitoes come lay eggs there too, but their population doesn't grow because the fish eat the larvae and the other mosquitoes attracted more spiders and other insects to my garden. Dragonflies started laying eggs in the pond, so now we have a lot of pretty dragonflies during spring and summer and the dragonfly larvae also eat many of the mosquito larvae and even some mosquitoes. Butterflies and moths come because of the flowers, birds come because of everything and now there's hawks and eagles around too. Amazing the effects a little pond can have.

I try to use the car the least possible, but unfortunately it's not that easy in a city as large with only semi decent public transport.

We recycle as much as we can and are looking into installing solar cells and a solar heater in our house. Maybe in the next year! That would be great.

I used to compost, but haven't done so in a while. I should get back to that.

I go to "green" expos and festivals and find some really cool stuff. I have a backpack made from a recycled airplane wheel and some shirts made from all sorts of recycled stuff. One is made from recycled X-Rays, another from blue PET bottles and another one from fast food trays. They are also super comfy.

Hmmm... I don't do much more than the standard recycling the correct things, keeping lights off, not using too much water, etc. If I had more time and energy, I think I'd participate in more clean up events (cleaning waste from beaches, rivers etc), because I really enjoyed doing it. :O

Also I guess this is kind of related but I am a huge bus nerd and advocate for more people abandoning their cars and taking the bus.

yes i love nature! i'm going to school for biology so i can learn more about it and maybe find a way to help. honestly lately when i drive i see all the trash on the side of the road and it makes me so sad. why do people not care about the earth? plants and animals are so beautiful and it's depressing to think humans are destroying it. the other day i skipped class and went to this herring run because the rush of the water drowns out all other noise and it's so peaceful to hear it. i kept noticing trash here and there and it just bothered me so much i started picking it all up and i threw it away in a bin nearby.

sometimes i imagine a world with no real wild places anymore and just buildings everywhere. for me that is truly the most depressing thought

I don't really do anything to help the environment. It's not that I don't care either, I just don't see how I could do something. I guess I do what everyone else does like making sure unnecessary electricity and water isn't being wasted, but that's about it. I would love to do a clean up job with a group or something like that. I've always been open to wanting to do some work to help, but just never had the opportunity to do it. Maybe I'll seek out a program for it this summer.

If they were more reliable and ran later in my area I would. I don't mind having to walk a little from the stop to my destination but a bus isn't going to get me home in the dead of night. Plus I wouldn't feel easy relying on public transport to get to work on time.

Esper April 2nd, 2016 11:38 AM

I do what I can to help the environment by minimizing my waste. I try to buy local food, carpool (public transportation here is pretty non-existent), take short showers, use natural light, and all that stuff.

Which is funny because I don't really like being outdoors and in nature. Like, a little at a time is tolerable, but I'm not someone who is ever going to have a garden. I'm allergic to too many things, I sunburn easily, and mosquitoes love me.

Where I'm from, the environment is a huge deal (I live in a hippy town of sorts, haha). Everyone takes recycling and composting so seriously, and I guess it's something I've always been doing out of habit. I am pretty bad with saving electricity though, I use so many power outlets :why:

Pebbles April 7th, 2016 10:39 AM

i do a lot for this planet;
i do not smoke
and i use something we like to call a TRASH CAN, GARBISH BIN, whatever you like to call it
{D:}

I'm more interested in how the environment can be twisted for human benefit than the other way round. We are a product of a natural environment as much as much as anything else, and ultimately the only known hope for any kind of life on Earth to survive longer than the planet. I don't feel there is any moral content inherent to life; our only 'duty' is to the continuation of our genes' existence. Of course we are intelligent enough to understand this and pursue or deny our most basic motive as we see fit. Personally, while I happen to be a generally unwasteful person, I feel recycling simply makes sense as a matter of course and have no particular feelings on the overall subject, only my habitual curiosity. People will do whatever suits them, as ever.

Thepokefansophia April 8th, 2016 11:56 AM

TBH I always been brought up to recyle? So I recycle alot. I dont know if this counts.
I also believe in planting more trees as trees produce more oxygen. I know alot of trees have been cut down to use for paper and etc.
I never really given that much thought to the enviroment. I do believe in global warming and climate change. it seems logical to me.

I try to cut down on eating beef. While local beef industry probably isn't a big problem in Sweden, many other countries (looking at you, big bad US of A) are apparently terrible and cause so much of the greenhouse effect overdrive.

Listen man we try to be as bad as possible and that takes effort.

Anyway I do care a lot about the environment. While at the moment I just do what I can to try to limit my energy, meat, CO2 emissions, etc. Living under my parents' roof does not afford me many opportunities. Once I get a car I plan on cutting my meat intake to (or very near) 0. I also still plan to walk a lot as opposed to driving everywhere because I enjoy walks and would like to limit the pollution I put out.

I believe we should be good stewards of the earth. I do what I can.

Kanzler April 11th, 2016 6:06 PM

I like to think I the environment. I wish I was in nature more often. I don't have a personal compost, because our city has a compost program parallel to garbage and recycling pickup. I never use plastic bags because I like being creative with how few cardboard boxes I use to move groceries.

I eat a lot of meat, though, and I have a bad relationship with household fauna. I've drowned two house centipedes in the sink just last week. I try to destroy daddy-longlegs as well. Spiders are okay.
