Windows 7/8.1 computers automatically upgrading to Windows 10?

http://www.pcworld.com/article/3043464/windows/windows-7-users-complain-of-unprovoked-windows-10-auto-upgrades.html

So apparently it's becoming an issue lately where many folks are complaining on social media about Microsoft "automatically updating" users to Windows 10 from older versions of Windows, especially ever since this past Patch Tuesday. I know that MS is really pushing for Windows 10, but why must they make it this extreme?

For those that have upgraded to Windows 10, were any of you guys "forced" or did it happen without knowledge? I'm just curious to know, seeing how it's clear to me that not everybody in the world is ready for Windows 10 yet.

Mine started automatically, but I really don't care because it's 10x better than Windows 8, which is what I had.

I was actually literally about to go buy a Chromebook on Friday and the download just started by itself. Glad it did though, because I actually like Windows 10, so saved myself about $300 there.

Maybe it started because my computer realized I was looking at Chromebook reviews and prices....hehe.

No, nothing odd is happening here. I wonder if it's OS-specific, region-specific, or the work of a bored intern?

Well region-specific maybe. I know a few weeks ago I caught that Microsoft wanted to automatically update my laptop a few weeks ago but thankfully I was able to stop it since I hovered over the icon.

Forcing Windows upgrades in this way is beyond ridiculous. This is why I wish we could go back to when a single software version was good for the lifetime of the device it was installed on without having to update regularly (like in the 1980s and early 1990s, before the Internet became mainstream.)

I remember having an old IBM PS/1 from 1990 that was given to me the summer following between fifth and sixth grade. Probably the latest software it had was MS-DOS 6.22 from 1994 that was installed as an upgrade, and it also had Windows 3.0. Never had to update anything on it via the Internet (since it wasn't capable of it in the first place anyway), and the system was so simple and easy to maintain (not much more than an occasional defrag and ScanDisk.)

If this kind of thing happened in the 1980s or even the 1990s, you bet the DOJ would be after Microsoft on this as this is yet another example of their illegally enforcing their OS monopoly (as if the SecureBoot requirement to lock out alternative operating systems wasn't bad enough in the first place.)

I now firmly believe that Microsoft should have actually been imposed the same punishment back in 2000 from United States v. Microsoft as Ma Bell had in 1983-84 (being broken up into multiple separate companies.)

If I had thousands of dollars to spare, I'd replace both of the computers that I use regularly at home with Macs.

In the end, Micro$oft's conduct today is no different than their predatory practices in the 1990s that resulted in the elimination of DR-DOS, OS/2, and Netscape Navigator from the software marketplace as competitors.

I think Windows didn't do the upgrade for me because I asked for my laptop to not scan for updates until I prompted to do so, and also opting out some updates which may download the Windows 10 installations. When I do upgrade, though, it was on my own willing because I was hyped of Windows 10 back in the day.

But still, I think forcing to upgrade on its own might be unacceptable, because it's against the right of consumers who wants to have free will to chose when's the right time to upgrade. Besides, upgrading is a serious business that it should be tread with care and not to be forced, especially if it comes to dealing with possible hardware and software incompatibilities.

Mines forced upgraded a few days ago, I was planning on upgrading eventually anyway but I still wanted to give it a few more months which was annoying.
