Project: Cook Off (An Idea In Progress)

I was thinking earlier today about this possible idea and I was wondering what y'all thought...

What if each week we had some kind of either cooking competition or food showcase? I was thinking about how each week there could be a running theme, such as having to incorportate a certain ingrediant, where at the end of the week people could vote on their favorite food(s). Winner could get a The Mall specific emblem or something. I think that this could be a fun way as to not only showcase our PokeCommunity chefs out there, but also encourage users to learn how to cook inexpensive meals and open new users to (healthier) recipes out there! (:

So just some questions that I'd like some honest feedback too:
  • Would you consider participating in this? Maybe not every week, but at some point.
  • Would a week be enough time for people to participate in? Too much/too little?
  • Would it be better as a friendly competition or just a showcase? Is awarding an emblem based on votes a good idea, or should emblems just be awarded to anyone who pariticipates? Or both?
  • If this does become a thing, what kind of themes would be good? I was thinking weekly themes such as cookies, healthy snacks, smoothies, a dish that incorporates chicken, etc. etc.

As each week passes, themes can be archived within the newest week's challenge to allow users to look back at our own PokeCommunity cookbook that forms. Nonetheless, let me know what you guys think about this, I hope it has a positive reception (:

Feedback

  • Voting would be calculated based on a few factors: presentation, creativity, taste (lowest)
  • 3 weeks of normal themes, 1 week of Pokemon-related theme (e.g. Pokeblock flavors, Pokemon shaped food)
  • Pictures of process should be recorded
  • Time limit/$$ budget challenges for possible themes

True to the last part. My thought process was that the winner would be based on presentation, but do you think that would be an unfair judgement for this kind of thing?

Ohh my god this sounds like so much fun!! I would definitely participate, but I could probably only participate every now and then since I have limited access to western ingredients and a lot of staple kitchen tools.

I think it should just be a friendly thing as well. For example I know some of my friends do like, food challenges on their facebook pages where they don't have any theme, but just keep trying to one-up each other with each dish they make? Sometimes they make funny 30 sec videos too of them like throwing ingredients into the pan to make fun of those other facebook cooking vids-- videos could be an idea!

Also, I think it'd be super cute though if you had like, a Pokemon theme where people could make anything they wanted-- but it has to resemble something in Pokemon! Like, pikachu shaped omurice or pokeball/badge themed cupcakes, etc.??

I like this idea too, but I agree with Lucid, winners would have to be based on presentation and/or creativity if it were a competition. People with allergies or intolerances would likely have to adjust their recipes too depending on the ingredients chosen.

I think a week seems very reasonable though and I love the theme ideas too. I think that would help keep it broad enough to where people can use what ingredients they want & we won't have like 10 people submitting essentially the exact same dish.

A PC cookbook would be great :D

Edit: because I take forever to type .____. I like the idea of posting videos or progress photos too! I think videos could be a really fun element.

I secretly would love to do a Top Chef PokeCommunity-style thing, but I feel like that would a little too much lol (;

So if it was to be a quote unquote "competition," food items could be graded on:
  • Creativity
  • Presentation
  • Possible taste?
Rated out of 1-5 respectivtely. The taste factor obviously would have to be solely done by the OP so how would we be able to weight all of these factors?

Margot March 14th, 2016 6:17 PM

To tie in Loki's and Lucid's ideas, we could do 3 weeks of themes and then 1 week each month could be Pokemon related. You could get additional points for adding pokeblock flavor profiles and certain ingredients, if that's not getting to complicated :)

I think we can do a rating scale, but I personally would weigh taste the lowest just because it's so subjective. If someone doesn't like certain ingredients, they may vote it lower than it deserves.

I LOVE the idea of a Pokemon related week (: That was very intuitive of both of you, I never would have thought of that lol.

So what would some other examples of Pokemon related cooking could be included besides specific flavors?

Do you think then that maybe a budget should be put in place in order for people to inexpensively participate? It's a factor that maybe we should think about (or if not, then maybe as a potential theme to make a kind of dish under x amount of money?)

Well, I think it could be up to an individual to decide how much they want to spend especially since how much you can buy with a certain amount of money will tend to vary across different currencies-- but I think maybe a time limit would be interesting? Like, "A meal you can make in just 30 minutes" or something for the busy folk?

Nina March 14th, 2016 11:39 PM

I don't know about a competition per say, but I think everyone showing off the food they've made or bouncing ideas off each other would be really neat!
I was going to say it makes me think of another idea where people keep a current thread to keep up lifestyle stuff like what they cooked, but that would be...a blog! Which we already have.

El Héroe Oscuro March 18th, 2016 5:18 PM

What if we had another thing where like, you had a "secret Santa" so to speak who chose an ingredient that you had to have on top of the ingredients that you were already planning to use. Like an additional challenge on top of the challenge already. Thoughts?

Jay March 19th, 2016 6:08 AM

Ey, cooking contests. I'm in.

Finally, I can achieve the respect of my real mother... rather than the cheap love of Cooking Mama on the DS.

Jessie March 19th, 2016 11:54 AM

I'd be in. Maybe I'd actually be motivated to cook food for myself for once.

Fannie March 20th, 2016 4:22 AM

If I did participate it would be ironically because I can't cook at all lol.

I think weekly is good - the more frequent the better so that people don't forget or lose interest. Emblems for both participation and gaining more votes would be nice IMO. Competition gets me excited, even if in this case I wouldn't be winning. I'd love to see what people come up with in the Pokemon related weeks! This would be like the Great Brittish Bake Off x1000 and with more than cakes.
