airplanephobia
Okay so... I will board a plane in a few hours. I really really don't like flying :/ I would rather spend a whole day reaching my destination by train than with a few hours on a plane.
Do you guys know of any things I could do or think of in order not to think "oh god i'm gonna die" exactly 100% of the time I'm up there? |
The best way to avoid that feeling is just to sleep. But that probably won't work too well if you're anxious. Just keep yourself distracted with a movie or TV series. I would say that it's the most likely way to keep your mind off of the fact that you're inside a flying metal tube.
|
The best I can think of is to just keep yourself distracted with a book/movie/game. I'm with you though, I have terrible acrophobia as is and being in a plane is the absolute worst especially when you add in all the normal travel stresses.

you could always join the mile high club if you want

dont watch the first final destination movie
works 100% of the time |
Airplanes are statistically safer than cars and maybe trains, I think.
Music, videos and even games on your phone/tablet help me pass the time. I usually try to sleep as much as I can first, though. Because I'm studying abroad, I've been needing 4 5-hour flights every year to travel between countries for the holidays. Long flights are more boring than they are scary. |
I travel a lot but hate flying too, so I understand :<
I'm a fan of booking earlier flights just because it forces me to sleep off at least an hour of the flight. If you can, maybe watch some TV if they have it available? I know not all planes do. I also like to write out lists of things I want to do once I get to my destination, read a book, or play a game. Safe travels!! |
I grew up on a place pretty much, so it doesn't bother me, but my significant other loathes flying so we usually drive to a destination (even if it's 10+ hours by car).
Sleeping is the best if you're nervous, second would just be distracting yourself with media and entertainment. How was your flight? |
I never fly so I wouldn't have much advice :( You could spend the whole trip playing Pokemon I suppose! :D
|
Have a drink or two? A friend of mine can't fly unless she has a little alcohol in her system. Puts her to sleep right away.
But flying is safer than anything. |
I read, listen to music and sleep. I have a 10 hour flight ahead of me and that's what I'll do.
I enjoy flying. I love window seats. |
When you're afraid of something to a serious extent then not much will distract you. I have a pretty big aerophobia and none of the usual 'relaxers' do much of anything. Was at the doctor today about my flu and asked her while I was there (we're going on vacation at the end of next month!!), she recommended taking some Benadryl which is an over the counter allergy medication, and I used to take it when I got nervous. Side effects are relaxation and drowsiness. Not sure how much it'll help when flying since that's literally my biggest fear next to public speaking but.. it's worth a try. It does help in other circumstances. :c

Window seats are the worst, why do you want to be reminded that you're that high up? o.O See this sort of post is why I kill you all the time in mafia. |

Yeah, distractions of some sort kind of help, that's why I always bring a portable game system of some kind, and/or mp3 player or book. It doesn't always help entirely since even if I'm into a game or novel, I'll still always have in the back of my mind: "oh god are we there yet please tell me enough time has passed." So I definitely know the feeling. :(
I would suggest sleeping, but uh. Experience has told me that's not necessarily the best. Or at least it didn't work for me the last time I flew. I had every right to sleep then (had been up since like 4 am that day), but there was no doing so because with no other distractions, plus anxiety...not fun. There was no sleep! But yeah. Bring something to play/read/listen to. That's what I would do. (Also, I am very much in favor of aisle seats on planes. But that's more because I don't like feeling entirely boxed in like I would feel if I'm by a window, and if I have to get up for whatever reason then I can get right out.) |

My relationship with flying seems to fluctuate a lot. Sometimes I have no problem with it, other-times it's my biggest fear. If I'm having one of my bad trips, I'll usually stay away from the window seat and read or play a game. I can't sleep on the plane, so I'm forced to sit through the entire thing. Traveling can be quite tiring when you're on edge for hours at a time, but just hang in there and remember that it will be over eventually!

Aisle seats yes!! Much better. Quote:
It's actualy landing and starting that bothers me most though. Being in the air feels pretty okay. But starting, take off, it's horrible. Landing is at least coming back down at last. |

and most landings use category three autoland features, so the plane's literally landing itself while the pilot monitors. takeoffs and landings are so much safer than they were even ten years ago. |
