Artificial Intelligence, Actually Idiotic
Damnit Sharla
Rare is the video game that lets us play by ourselves these days. In games that aren't turn-based especially, or ones that require you to move with a unit, your comrades are controlled (for lack of better word) by the video game. Only there are times when the video game doesn't really know how to play itself, making you wish that you could reach into the game and punch their lights out for being so phenomenally stupid. Healers that don't heal until after you're dead. Escort targets that stand in one place, that one place typically being right in enemy fire, or actively seek out combat. Other times you get A.I. that, whilst they might not exactly cheat, are far too smart for their own good. Targeting the same character - usually the healer - repeatedly. Utilising cover instead of obligingly running headlong into your bullets. Spotting you from several miles away and hounding you until you turn around and face them, only to die horribly. Pushing you into pools of acid and making you pay for your insolence. You'd love to have them working for you, but you're stuck with a group of idiots who, were they real people, would probably be three year olds who thought the controller was a chew toy, or that pushing the pretty big button over and over would mean the bad people on the screen would blow up. In most games, the A.I. seems to be fine when working against, but when working with you, it's a constant struggle. So. A.I. Share your crowning moments of awesome, and your moments of absolute despair. Have you ever played a game with an A.I. so bad that it rendered it practically unplayable? How about a game that had you thanking the A.I. profusely multiple times? And how about enemy A.I.? Have you ever come across a computer that is too smart for its own good (to the point that one might consider it a cheating bastard) or one so stupid you despair at ever facing a challenge? |
As much as I love Xenoblade Chronicles, most of the partner AI in that game is ridiculously dumb. They constantly fall off cliffs, waste abilities etc. Sharla and Melia definitely seem to be the worst, with neither of them actually using their abilities well (Sharla's practically useless anyway though, so she doesn't really matter).
But all of them will run straight into the aforementioned pools of acid, making "YOU WILL PAY FOR YOUR INSOLENCE" the hardest boss in the entire game. |
Man, I'm sure most of the peeps here in VG were fortunate enough to not play Daikatana ever.
Oh what's Daikatana? Everything you'll hate about escort missions and AI squadmates at the same time. I find it really funny. Daikatana for its horrible worth could have been the game that would put John Romero in the map for a very very long time. The game had a lot of potential with the servicable story (which in any FPS, is not important), and had some great level designs as well. It was very much ruined not because the whole AI controlled and commandable squad mates system being bad, but the technology was far too young. It also helped that Daikatana underwent development hell and game engine dilenmas along with it, so what came out in 2000 was a rushed mess. Also, speaking of Daikatana dilenmas.. Aliens Colonial Marines. Never again... |
I've seen the AI in Dota 2 do some really dumb stuff. Like when the entire team ran to kill Roshan while we were attacking their ancient. That was amusing.
And I've seen a lot of AI shooting at walls in several FPS and Stealth games. Like, Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory as good as the AI in that game tends to be, or much much moreso in Splinter Cell 3D. Hell I've seen them shoot at walls or open space in that game more than I've seen them shoot at me. d: |
Now here's an exquisite exposition about the Artificial Intelligence being way too good for their own good. Rambo: The Video Game by Teyon.
Enemies having pinpoint laser sights accuracy? Did the developers of the game actually see the movies? NONE of Rambo's enemies, NONE ever hit Rambo with the first shot. NONE! Who would make a Rambo game where the enemies have the accuracy of SPEC OPS soldiers? That's not how the movies were. Since when did Rambo's enemies actually made him feel helpless where the said star was forced to actually bob in and bob out their heads. Rambo never did that in the movies. Complete lack of loyalty to source material. |
