You are What you Play

So there's a saying that you are what you eat, you are what you wear, you are what you read, you are what you watch, and you are what you do in your everyday life. So in terms of gaming, there's also another saying.. You are what you play. Simply put, the video games you prefer and enjoy, and how you make out of it somehow tell a bit about what you are in a sort of surface level.

Do you believe so?

There's definitely some truth to this, since personality plays a big role in what games you end up enjoying. Obviously everyone who plays Madden isn't some frat guy who's filled with testosterone and parental disappointment, and everyone who plays League of Legends isn't a twelve year old who takes out their pre-teen angst on whoever is unfortunate enough to get teamed up with them. There are these players, yes, but they're in a definite minority. But there are real correlations with more general interests, such as sports fans being drawn to Madden, and more casual PC gamers playing some LoL once in a while.

I guess so. My favourite games tend to be quirky alternatives to their basic counter parts: like what TF2 is to a team shooter, or what Mario Kart is to a racing game. Suppose that says something about my personality? I don't think I'm so quirky but maybe I'm biased.

Yep! Applies to me just right.

I like more colorful pretty graceful graphics in my games, first off, and can't stand too much other than a more stylized anime aesthetic. So I don't tend to play anything that is gray/brown and looks too "realistic." The types of games that tend to have these aesthetics are JRPGs. I'm more invested in stories and characters than systems. I like a simple game that I can just get through by grinding and has fights and bosses that can sometimes be intense not just because of their difficulty (although some difficulty is nice, too easy and it isn't worth playing), but because of their importance to the story's context. Those are really the only types of games I can enjoy fully, and not get bored of. This says to me that I just care about context. Give me a reason why I'm running around and killing people. Doing it just for the sake of it will get tiresome quickly. I want goals that make sense and can be accomplished in a satisfying and not impossibly difficult way. Chaos and freedom to do what I like is overwhelming. I prefer more linear experiences. Basically, it also says that I'm goal-oriented.

For everyone else who isn't as picky and selective as I am though, I doubt it applies to such an extent. I only can enjoy one type of game, and that's going to say a lot about me. Other people, they're more casual about it. They're not looking for the type of experience I am. And I won't fully judge them on that, but I do acknowledge at a lot of the time, certain types of people are attracted to certain types of games.

Nah, unfortunately I'm not a loli.

Excellent. Its nice to see that i actually get some responses so I'll expound about what i mean here:

So if i were to be asked, what kind of games i do enjoy? Well if you dig through me hard enough, you can see what I do enjoy: Anything that involves either a large amount of shooting as well as martial arts. So its some Action, Hack n Slash, League of Legends (MOBAS in general), First Person shooters, and a little bit of Mortal Kombat. They all stemmed from what i liked seeing as a kid, and what i enjoyed during my formative years. I simply love everything that makes my blood boil, giving me some red hot energy so that i can start ripping and tearing through bad guys while making them my Beech. In a surface level, my preferences to VGs is easily seen from the way i act, the terminlogies i use (Not to brag here, but I think I'm one of the few members who openly use the terms "Rip and Tear" and "Supermurder" more than anyone in PC's populace ;) )

Also, since Doom, Quake 2, and Mortal Kombat are some of the very first games that I seriously got addicted to, it pretty much followed. I Seriously enjoy VGs with large amounts of graphic violence and gore that matches well with the action. Of course, I never ended up as a psychopathic school shooter who becomes a contributor to the controversies surrounding Vidya games ;)

TLDR; I have a "messed up" personality, and I openly embrace what i like ;) ;) ;)

So here' a follow up question: Are some of you the ones to quickly judge others about their VG tastes? Like sure you can easily describe yourself through your tastes and preferences, but what about your peers and friends? You think they are what they play as well? because i can somehow guess a person through their preferences but that's just me being insane
