Does time affect how you enjoy a game?
Has there ever been a game that when it came out you were so excited to play, but then when you finally played it it was terrible? Or rather, do you find that games that you would have enjoyed when it was the "current generation of games" are terrible once they are considered "last gen"?
For instance, I wanted to play Far Cry 3 for the longest time but never came across to buying it until last week. Heard so many great things about it, but when I played it I couldn't get past the graphics of the game compared to the graphics that I'm used to with my Xbox One. Same thing goes with GTA IV for me. |
See, I think about this a lot in regards to graphics mixed with a realistic aesthetic. Like, in most cases, if a game's going for an anime-esque or cartoony art style, it's generally gonna be timeless and easy to jump into whenever (though the 6th generation might argue that point). But games that try to look realistic look more and more uncanny as time goes on, and when you can tell that was meant to be one of the game's bigger draws when it was big, it makes it a lot harder to stomach. At least, for me.
Other than that, there are mechanics. Which can go two ways, really. Because a lot of times you can play older games and find yourself annoyed by the lack of conveniences that, today, would just make sense and developers wouldn't have omitted. Going the other way, though, recently I've found that there are ideas that were just lost to time for no real reason, thus making certain games gems that are more enjoyable because they're both older and unique. The SNES in particular is filled with titles that fit this. |
There's something about "aging" where it tells if the game is holding up by today's standards.
For example, there's A LOT of PSX games that I remember I didn't play but always saw on magazines, other people's PSX, adds, and of course the internet nowadays. I would finally get the chance to play or re-play some of these games through emulation or through playing with a friend's own console for the longest of time, and i realize that there are some games that still hold up against today's standards, like Wild 9 which i totally recommend to everyone looking for a GREAT (Not just good) sidescroller, and there are other ones that seem to not have aged well, like a lot of the under-appreciated titles that are too many to mention. The PSX, a console that i have such a romantic and heartwarming friendship with, had a lot of titles that are worth mentioning when it comes to either aging well or not. As i mentioned before, Wild 9, Abe's Odyssey, The Syphon Filter series, N2O: Nitrous Oxide (which i talked about before in other VG threads), Brave Fencer Musashi, Classic Spyro, Vagrant Story, among others aside from EVERY PSX JRPG EVER are these games that I think have aged well especially when compared to today's standards. |
