Rumor: Playstation 4 receiving newer, stronger iteration

Sony Corp. is planning to sell a more powerful version of its PlayStation 4 machine to handle higher-end gaming experiences, including virtual reality, people familiar with the matter said, while continuing production of its existing console that has so far sold more than 36 million units world-wide.

Existing PlayStation 4 owners would need to buy the new model to take full advantage of the enhanced graphics and power, though it is likely that the current model and the coming one would share the same software catalog, one of the people said.

The new console would be announced before the planned October release of the PlayStation VR, Sony’s new virtual-reality headset, the people said. It would be able to handle ultra-high-definition resolution graphics. The upgraded console would also provide more power for running the PlayStation VR, whose main competitors, Facebook Inc.’s Oculus Rift and HTC Corp.’s Vive, are designed to work with top-shelf computers.

Dubbed the PS4K by some, the Playstation 4.5 by others, and the new PS4 by me, recently evidence has sprung up that Sony seems to be working on a new, stronger iteration of the PS4. Its touted features seem to include Ultra-High Resolution support (so 4K resolution, hopefully with upscaling) and increased graphics capabilities and power. Supposedly, it's to be announced ahead of Playstation VR's October release and will be manufactured alongside the original PS4.

The way I see it, worse case scenario is we get remastered versions of PS4 games at a higher fidelity or paid "High Res" patches that do a similar job, with games being designed for the Holiday-bound PS4K that will run sluggish on the PS4 (or, even more devious, games made to intentionally run badly on the PS4 so as to drive the sales of the PS4K). But that's wholly pessimistic and unlikely. What I do hope comes out of this, however, is increased performance in existing games and shorter load times, as well as console fidelity options in games so that players can tweak how a game looks and performs to their own preferences. Assuming this turns out to be true.

So, do you believe this? And in such a scenario where this is actually true, how do you feel about it?

I would say this is a bad idea, but then I think about it and maybe it isn't. Seeing as the New 3DS is the most recent thing to do something like this and Nintendo seems to be fine I think Sony can pull it off too. I wonder how it will affect them though since the PSVR is already expensive and you know people will want to play that in its best form and they'd only be able to supposedly with this New PS4. So will they hold off buying since altogether they would be paying like 1000 dollars on it? Or will they just get the PSVR regardless?

I guess you could also see it as a minority thing as well. I doubt the PSVR is going to take off insanely fast and not everyone has a 4K television so this will just be like the luxury version while most people have the normal version similar to low-end and high-end PC.

I wonder if they will allow us to upgrade to this new console if we already own a ps4 probably not.

Isn't there always a second/slimmer version of a PlayStation console throughout its lifespan since the PS2? The only thing new is the possible inclusion of 4K resolution, which isn't ready to be used for video games yet due to how expensive they currently are.

New details, including launch titles and expected hardware. And the internet keeps on burning.

Actually there has been slimmer models since the first Playstation. PS4 has had remodels already as well, they use cheaper plastic and look slightly different if you look for the details but they pretty much look identical. The difference with this new PS4 though is that it's not just a smaller new model, it's a total upgrade and obviously is more powerful than the current PS4 since it can do 4K (regardless of the fact 4K isn't mainstream yet) and runs the PSVR better. I think they should try and do sales where they bundle a 4K television with the system so people can actually take advantage of the resolution for a decent price.

Alright, let me just say, I highly doubt this thing will run true 4K quality. 4K is hard enough to achieve with desktop computers, most of the time you need to be running with multiple graphics cards to even make it feasible. I mean, hell, when the PS4 came out they claimed it ran at 1080P, when really it was 960x1080 upscaled to a 1920x1080. If the thing couldn't even run 1080P at launch, what makes people think its actually going to be able to run 4K?

Honestly, I couldn't care less about the thing. I think that they are trying to add more power because the current model is too weak to run VR, which is fair. But it only goes to show how outdated consoles already are. Its only been two years since the new gen was released, and they are already announcing a more powerful version? Something just feels wrong about this. I for one wont be using PS VR, and don't care about 4K resolution, so I won't be picking one up.
