What cooking skills do you want to learn?
Is there any cooking skill you wish you had? Or something you wish you could do better?
I can cook eggs any way....except for omelettes. No matter how many times I read about it, or watch videos, I can't seem to get it right. I like omelettes too :< I also think I could be better with cooking burgers or steaks, I tend to char them out the outside rather than have it cook more evenly. |
I just want to learn how to cook in general. I've made a few items like quesadillas, sausage gravy, pasta, and chicken pot pie, but they're pretty simple. Ever since I moved out I've been slowly approaching cooking, and I'm actually making granola bars for the first time as I'm typing this out. I just need to let the oats cool before adding the chocolate chips, and it's coming out well so far.
I learned that I can cook when I want to, I just need to become more comfortable in the kitchen. |
In general, I'd just like to learn a greater variety of dishes. The stuff that I can cook generally tastes fine but I don't know a lot.
|
I want to learn how to pan fry foods better. I usually burn things like pork chops and burgers on the outside and they tend to br dryer than they should be. Funnily enough though I love charred foods anyway so it never bothered me too much. I think this problem comee from me always keeping high heat on the stove because I feel it isn't doing anything fast enough. Also because I rush to make everything finish at the same time instead of letting anything sit.
|
I think that may be my problem, I'm so impatient so I usually have things on high heat too. I also try and find cookbooks since I felt like for a while, I was making the same 4 dishes on repeat.
I also kinda wish I had better knife skills. I can chop and dice just fine, but I'm pretty hasty and it doesn't turn out as nice as it could. |

Buying a cookbook sounds like something I should do since I spend a lot of time looking up things to cook on the internet. Having lots of recipes just in a cookbook would be more convenient. |
I wish I wasn't so paranoid and afraid of cooking raw meat and knew all of the proper ways to do it. It is quite frightening and I avoid it at all costs, going with frozen microwavable meat. Also, I'm pretty scared of knives. So I'd like to learn safe ways to handle them as well.
Sadly, my living situation forces me to make the most basic of foods. (I have my parents constantly in the kitchen and my mother in particular is VERY critical of anything I do. So I'd rather avoid that) When I move out, I look forward to learning how to cook beyond using a rice cooker only for rice, making pasta, or microwaving meats. As someone else said above me, I also could use more confidence in the kitchen. I'd like to utilize my high tech rice cooker more, because it came with a recipe book that should be relatively simple for me to use. |
I would like to learn how to cut raw meat in general. If meat is already cut from someone else and just needs frying/heating up I can do that fine, but it's the cutting of raw meat I haven't tried really. Probably because I'm afraid to make a much bigger mess than if I were to chop vegetables.

(You posted your response while I was typing up mine, haha). |
I wish I could cook from scratch so I could make myself healthy meals instead of instant ramen all the time ;_;
|
I would like to learn about when/what spices and sauces to use when working with meat. Primarily for chicken, steaks, ribs, and maybe burgers (although I've found a way of making burgers that I already like!). I'd also like to be more capable of pan frying meats, since I find barbecuing very very simple in comparison. x.x

Glad to see I'm not the only one concerned about meats. I almost never touch beef/steak but I'll bake chicken and fish. I'm always paranoid about not cooking them correctly.
|
I can cook meats, chicken, fish etc. I can also make basic breakfast stuff, but I want to master all other meals like Lasagna, fish tacos etc.
|
I'd like to just learn how to cook period, because right now I am a disaster in the kitchen.

Everything.
See, I have this problem with cooking on the stove. The idea of having to cook via the stove terrifies me. It sounds silly, but I think it is due to a slightly bad experience I had when I was really little. The stove was hot, and my mom saw me reaching for it to touch it. She kept saying "Kimberly, don't touch the stove" a dozen times, but I didn't get the message. Probably because I didn't quite grasp why she would tell me this. Well, I ignored her and touched the stove anyway. It burned me enough so that I ended up mentally-scarring myself. Ever since then, I've been so horrified by the idea of using a stove.I'm afraid if I cook something, it's going to splatter on me or some other silly irrational reason. :c That doesn't mean I don't want to try to gradually get used to cooking. It's because of this that I want to overcome those fears. So, that's why I want to be able to cook as much as I can, or to try working myself towards doing so. It's just really hard for me too because I don't know how long to cook something either. I have little to no concept of time in certain situations, and this makes for another reason cooking is hard for me as well. |
Through my old college job, I actually became a pretty decent chef and was trained somewhat by some classically trained chefs, but I'd really like to take it further and be proficient enough to whip up my own dishes. I have a decent idea of what pairs well together, but I'd like to be able to cook up something from scratch. I'm best cooking seafood and steaks, particularly on a grill. I make a mean tenderloin and blue cheese crumble with clarified butter. ;D

I guess it's not technically "cooking", but I'd love to learn how to make some killer sushi rolls! I'm so uncoordinated that I don't think I could do it now.
Also, I'm getting there- but I want to learn how to make good fried rice. |
I cook a lot, haha. I made lemon basil salmon with caprese salad tonight...but anyway, I would like to learn how to make steaks like my grandfather did. He made the best steaks and thankfully, my cousin's husband knows how to make them just like my grandfather. So I could just ask him. :P I don't have a grill here at my apartment, though.
I'd also like to learn how to cook with alcohol. I'm just afraid of burning up the place. And speaking of burning up the place, frying things. I mean. I can fry things, but I would just like to get over my fear of starting a grease fire or the oil popping on me. So that doesn't count as me wanting to learn...just me wanting to get over something, haha. |

I can cook, but usually only simple foods like pizza and noodles. I am definitely not ready to act like a professional chef would, especially with my fear of hot objects.
|
Right now? .. Hmm... Proper fermenting. I would love to make my own sauerkraut and kombucha. I tried pickling a few times and enjoyed it.
Other than that.. proper chocolate making (bean to bar!) Just seems like it would be cool! Proper butchery/fish filleting would also be very handy. I'm not very good at it at all! |
I really want to learn how the hell Sous Vide actually works and what its boundariea are. Not a lot of entry level techniques I haven't learned yet, except for cooking in quantities, but that's not exactly a technique. I guess maybe sand-pit slow cooking and proper barbecue is next, if not a but impractical.
