I can't really give a generalized answer for all the radical "mafia variants that don't represent mafia" simply because each variant is so different from the other. Such that liking one would not mean liking the other just because it is also a variant.

That said, I do (as a whole) prefer more traditional mafia games or RPG style mafia games as opposed to any kind of variant.

For the variants themselves, I think Snailvivor is my favourite from what I've seen, but I wouldn't say I prefer it over the above mentioned games. ^^

I like them for the most part, but I think it might better to try and keep them from taking up too many of the active game slots at once, as this is a mafia forum. It's hard to get better at the base game of mafia if you don't play it. I know there are other places to practice, but I like the slower and more informal pace of this place :).

They are fun and creative, I wouldn't call the variants as 'mafia games that do not resemble mafia games,'; they improvised mafia, actually. The vanilla mafia only works well for the beginners and in the epic mafia website, but it's gonna be dull if we keep on repeating the vanilla here. Therefore, I'm supportive of these creative formats. I'd also like to take this opportunity to thank you all our past and present GMs!

Out of those three, the only one that isn't mafia in my eyes is probably Survivor. Although the others have lots of tagged on mechanics there is still the basic mafia groupings behind it all. The Hater obviously pushes that to the extreme, though.

I like variants and new game styles as much as the EM-style. I had a tonne of fun hosting Mafia 102, whereas all my other games have played with new mechanics and ideas quite often. Quite enjoyed the rise of RPG Mafia, with hitpoints and the like.

It's cool having innovative and new aspects to a game, so it's not just the same as any other with different role names. There haven't been many instances of games flunking, so might as well give it a go. Annnnd if someone doesn't work lets just not try it again :c.

I generally prefer slight twists on your standard mafia games such as unusual roles or odd mechanics like the HP/attack values that show up in the RPG-styled mafia games or political games like GoT mafia. These can be fun, wild and different but still resemble mafia very clearly. I don't mind variants popping up and I applaud the creativity of those who come up with them but I think it's important to remember we're a mafia forum.

Tbh I like variants, keeps the scene fresh and creative imo. Tbh I've hosted like 1 pure vanilla game, which was S2, and all my other games have twists, like S3's Tier System (which was the worst variant ever), Fangirl's Win Conditions and Choose you Own Character system (I cant believe Nintendo got that recognition when in fact this was the first game it had that), S4's City Capture System (I'd like to think that it worked... But yeah idk), and Hater's Save and Kill System (this actually gone good in the end imo)

I plan MCM Scratched to be either a pure vanilla game, or probably a minor twist. After The Hater, my creative juices are beat lmao

If you're running out if ideas just employ the patented gimmepie method for guaranteed chaos.

Inb4 I get all the recruiter roles and still lose on day 1. :|

In general I prefer games that stick to the traditional play style for the most part, but with a little twist caused by a unique set of roles or a minor change/addition. However, I really, really like RPG Mafia as well. It's surprisingly very playable and feels for some reason more natural. (Or maybe I just play too many RPGs. {XD})

Heh, that's actually the set-up of one of the many Mafia Madness games I've planned. :D

esperance April 7th, 2016 11:37 AM

Honestly, I prefer a more traditional setup when it comes to mafia. I like a game which mixes up the roles, but I'd rather they did it under a setting where the game is still mafia at its core.

When you start introducing things like hitpoints and whatever else we have these days, not only is the game more confusing but it feels less like mafia.
