Make-a-Mega 2 - Complete

Make-a-Mega

We all know that there’s a lot of Pokemon that just plain suck competitively. However, the introduction of mega-evolution as a mechanic allowed many Pokemon that would otherwise be very weak to suddenly become very usable. In the case of some Pokemon (ie. Lucario or Mawile), their mega-evolutions give them such a boost that they jump from lower tiers into Ubers.

So, for the Daily series Make-a-Mega, we’re going to take a Pokemon that is ordinarily quite weak and create a mega-evolution that will render it usable in a higher tier. In the Make-a-Mega just passed, we took Roserade and turned it into a powerful sweeper with a dashing design for its new Mega. Now it's time to do the same for another Pokemon. First we'll select which Pokemon we'll focus on, then as we develop its typing, ability and stats PC's dazzling artists over in Art & Design will develop a design.

Week-by-week breakdown

Week One: Pokemon is determined
Week Two: A&D work begins, type change (if any) is determined.
Week Three: Stat changes are determined.
Week Four: Ability change (if any) is determined. Featured design is selected.

Each week (excluding the artwork) is broken down into three days where ideas are suggested and then a four day poll to determine which idea we apply. The article is then written and published as the next polling process begins.

Guidelines
  1. The chosen Pokemon must be fully-evolved or have no evolutions.
  2. It should not already possess a mega-evolution.
  3. It must be from a tier below OU.

Previous Selections
  1. Roserade

Megan April 25th, 2016 11:37 AM

Mismagius, until it is chosen. :P

Sirfetch’d April 25th, 2016 1:07 PM

Tentacruel

wolf April 25th, 2016 1:41 PM

Zoroark has always been wasted potential. A better typing (e.g. Dark/Poison with poison-tipped hair and claws, it even learns Sludge Bomb) and defenses would help it take advantage of Illusion better. 90 Def / 150 SAtk / 90 SDef / 115 Spe or 100 Def / 150 SAtk / 100 SDef / 95 Spe are possible stats. As far as I know, nothing can tank a +2 Dark Pulse, Sludge Bomb, or Focus Blast well, so a slower Zoroark would be less overpowered.

Rock-types are rare in OU. Kabutops would be an interesting choice. It arguably has a better chance than a lot of other Rock-types because it could be given high Speed to make up for its weaknesses.

If I can only nominate one, I'd go with Zoroark.

Blaki' April 25th, 2016 1:54 PM

Torkoal. It is a very underrated pokémon which really need some attention to become a very nice physical wall, maybe a double type to have more resistances/recieve neutral damage to Stealth Rock ? Maybe an ability to let it tank more attacks (filter, regenerator) ? Or maybe more power ?

Sonata April 25th, 2016 2:02 PM

Donphan

Christos April 25th, 2016 2:06 PM

From the suggestions above, I'd want to go with Zoroark. Mismagius (FAIRY GHOST) and Tentacruel would be good, too.

I'd also like to see either Mega Luxray or Mega Dunsparce. Luxray looks very cool but is surprisingly useless and Dunsparce is... Dunsparce. Let's give it an ability that triples secondary effect chance. :)

gimmepie April 26th, 2016 1:18 AM

I've got to say that I'd like to see a Mega Fearow. It's such a cool Pokemon but is unfortunately completely useless right now.

Sirfetch’d April 26th, 2016 6:48 AM

Tentacruel has an AMAZING typing and a very solid movepool. We could make it into a bulkier spinner or even go down a more offensive route with it. It has access to Swords Dance which is cute.

punkysaur April 26th, 2016 7:04 AM

MEGA-SNORLAX
We have recently had a water/fire typing added to ou. So was looking for some pokemon with typings like that.
And ludicolo popped in front of me.Interested to see a mega of ludicolo

DarkestMidnight April 26th, 2016 7:00 PM

I'd like to see either a Mega Snorlax or Mega Tentacruel...oh well, since so many people seem to want Tentacruel, I think I'll go with that for my selection.

Wings Don't Cry April 27th, 2016 2:06 AM

I would also like to suggest Weezing. It would be great if it became a really bulky Poison/Fire type Pokemon while retaining Levitate. Although it gains some weaknesses but now you can no longer burn it and it gets STAB on flamethrower and fire blast.

Miltank is another Pokemon that should get a Mega since it has some cool abilities like Thick Fat and Sap Sipper that can let it easily switch into. Its move pool is also amazing with support moves like Stealth Rocks, Thunder Wave, Heal Bell and Milk Drink, while its offensive moves includes additions like Dynamic Punch, Power-up punch, earthquake, hammer arm, the elemental punches and all the flinching moves. Honestly a mega evolution could turn this NU beast into a top tier threat.

Runiel April 27th, 2016 4:43 AM

Hmmm.... I have to Choose Mega Snorlax for this one because it would be so Broken, in a good way.
Yeah, Mega Snorlax FTW

slugia94 April 27th, 2016 5:10 AM

Oh my! Two Poison-types as the top choices, and right after a Poison-type has been done before. (Granted, Roserade and Tentacruel are both secondary Poison, but...) I love it!

Well, I loved James in the animé, so I guess I'll go with Weezing. It could raise its SpDef to be a better-rounded wall, and get a different ability, to compensate for his improved defenses.

bobandbill April 28th, 2016 5:26 AM

One more day! Going to be a lot of poll options it seems already though.

theChief April 28th, 2016 6:23 AM

I'm completely on board with Dark/Poison Wheezing with Levitate. No weaknesses, lots of bulk. Haze. Super stall all the way!

Kabutops would also be great. Give it an "ate" ability that turns normal type moves into water type moves (Hydrate?) and watch it destroy things in the rain. You'd keep the rain boost for the first turn because changes to turn order don't happen until next turn, and then annihilate everything with water stab rain boosted double edge. 65 points to speed to put it up to a good tier, 35 to attack to make it hit even harder. I see no problem here.

Last one. Bulk up Furret, give it Friend Guard and it would become the best doubles support Pokémon. It gets the coveted Follow Me, but can't make any use of it because of its terrible defensive stats. Helping Hand/Friend Guard is a nasty combo, too. 25% less damage and 50% more attack - yes please!

If you only pick one, pick Kabutops, though. Kabutops would be so good.

Syndrome April 28th, 2016 8:58 AM

Arcanine

bobandbill April 29th, 2016 6:34 AM

Poll is up! Next time going to make sure the OP states one choice per person only though. =p Lots of options!

FireSnow April 29th, 2016 8:45 AM

I'd like to see Arcanine as well!

Xertified April 29th, 2016 9:31 AM

Kabutops and Arcanine.

Give these two wings, more spikes, or more fur. xD

Sirfetch’d April 29th, 2016 9:39 AM

I voted for Tentacruel since I nominated it! All of the options are sweet though and I am looking forward to seeing what we can come up with!

Christos April 29th, 2016 10:37 AM

gooooooooo Luxray

Arcanine would be cool too but Luxray's so useless, I think it needs a Mega evolution more than Arcanine does.

L'Belle May 3rd, 2016 10:36 PM

I voted Fearow, I really like it and its design, but its outclassed by Pidgeot in many ways (who actually got a mega)

shubham2207 May 3rd, 2016 11:14 PM

I would like a Mega for LUXRAY, It really needs that Electric/Dark type and some more speed to wreck teams :)

72485rahul May 4th, 2016 2:18 AM

Zoroark, it's one of the best Dark types, and can be a great offensive Pokémon if given the right Typing+stats.

Volcarona1996 May 4th, 2016 2:36 AM

Out of the suggestions on the list, I feel like Mismagius, Luxray and Weezing megas would be interesting as they have perfect opportunities for new typings (Ghost/Fairy, Electric/Dark and Poison/Fire, respectively). Mega Zoroark would also be pretty cool mainly because I want to see N return with one. Most of the list would actually make pretty cool megas.

I would also like to see a Mega Honchkrow or a Mega Lapras. Honchkrow has always been one of my favourites and is pretty good in UU, but it could really do with a boost. (Also if Mismagius is on the list why not Honchkrow?) And Lapras has been a very iconic Pokemon since Gen 1 and is stuck in the bottom tiers; I can see a mega Lapras being pretty amazing especially due to its amazing STAB coverage (Water/Ice is only resisted by Water-types but Lapras gets Freeze-dry).

gimmepie May 4th, 2016 2:48 AM

Whoops, we've gone a bit overtime. Looks like we're going to be doing a Mega Luxray this time around. So what typing should it have?

Christos May 4th, 2016 3:26 AM

Given Luxray's looks and moveset, Electric/Dark would make sense as it gets Crunch, and it could get Strong Jaw as an ability to boost Crunch and the elemental fang moves. Electric/Fighting would also work, it gets Superpower and we can give it Contrary. :)

Or we could be more creative and give it a secondary typing like Fire or Poison along with a Pixilate-like ability.

Sonata May 4th, 2016 3:47 AM

Electric/Dark or pure Electric

gimmepie May 4th, 2016 3:59 AM

I'm also jumping on the Electric/Dark bandwagon. Although that seems a little odd considering its star motif.

Megan May 4th, 2016 3:59 AM

No point in making it Electric/Dark, because it can't even learn Knock Off. :P

But in all seriousness, I'd just let it be pure Electric type and give it some Pixilate-y ability, that allows it to run Facade as its main STAB, alongside a decent way to mitigate Burn.

Sirfetch’d May 4th, 2016 4:21 AM

if it has a Pixilate type ability, it should be running Return or Double Edge as it's main STAB since it won't be holding a status orb anymore to inflict a burn/poison to power up Guts and Facade.

Anyways, I am fine with keeping it pure Electric but that is totally dependent on the ability. If we do choose to give it an -ate ability, it should definitely get a secondary typing. Electric/Dark is the obvious choice that people are picking because of looks alone but is it a viable typing? I don't think Electric/Dark does a whole lot for it other than power up Crunch(no access to Knock Off) and give it a Fairy weakness.

FireSnow May 4th, 2016 8:44 AM

Like most have said, Electric/Dark is what I would say based off first glance but after reading through what others have said as well as a little research, I would say I really like what Christos said about the Electric/Fighting typing. It could get that Contrary ability and its access to Superpower would make it a great mega!

Earth Traveler May 4th, 2016 8:56 AM

Electric-Fighting was actually the first typing to pop into my head, so I guess I'll be jumping on that bandwagon.

theChief May 6th, 2016 2:23 AM

Electric-Fire would be an interesting combo. Especially if it got access to Flare Blitz... Sheer Force or Strong Jaw would go well with that typing. I'm more of a fan of Sheer Force - it would make Spark almost the same damage as Wild Charge, but without the recoil. Sheer Force Flare Blitz has already proven to be devastating with Darmanitan. Crunch would also be boosted, and so would Ice Fang for ground coverage.

If we can't let it have another move, Strong Jaw would be awesome. Crunch/Thunder Fang/Fire Fang/Ice Fang. It would be better than Sharpedo, with access to two STAB biting moves...

Ninji May 6th, 2016 8:02 AM

Given its movepool and design, I still think Electric/Dark works best for a Mega Luxray.

gimmepie May 7th, 2016 12:02 AM

The poll is up! WOOO

Etherion May 7th, 2016 1:37 AM

i'm not just too keen on making Luxray a pure Electric type, although, partnering his already existing type with Fighting or Fire is an interesting concept, I dont really see this come into fruition design wise. Soo... Electric/Dark it is :)

shubham2207 May 7th, 2016 2:40 AM

Yeah actually since its color scheme is black, so making a new design from the scratch just for the electric/fight or electric/fire would be a lot of paperwork so I will stick with ELECTRIC/DARK as well.

Strong Jaw would be a fitting ability for it.

Edit - I am also up for Infitrator as an ability and Sheer Force as well.

Christos May 7th, 2016 3:11 AM

I voted for Electric/Dark and Electric/Fighting! I think a Flare Blitz/Wild Charge Mega Luxray with Fire as its secondary typing would be and look really cool but I don't we really want moveset changes, and a Fire type Pixilate-like ability would be too much. A contrary Superpower Fighting type could be fun, though! Dark type would have Crunch as a STAB move which should help a lot against Pokémon with types that wall Electric-types.

Lycanthropy May 7th, 2016 5:03 AM

When I first saw these Pokémon I held them for dark types. I ended up feeling really confused when I captured a Shinx later and checked its type. So yeah, can't say I'm surprised to see electric/dark leading here.

FireSnow May 7th, 2016 9:29 AM

I voted Electric/Fighting. Though the new design might be a little more difficult, I just love the idea of it, especially for competitive reasons and my love for Serperior puts me well aboard the Contrary Superpower concept.

Though ELectric/Dark was my first thought when I first saw the Pokemon in Gen 4, so I would be okay if thats what it ends up as.

Pepperton May 7th, 2016 2:07 PM

electric/dark + make it learn knock off via tutor in Sun and Moon = gg fam, m-lux s rank OU, banned two months later

in other words, electric dark is the best choice here 8]

punkysaur May 7th, 2016 7:22 PM

I like electric/fire as typing as it doesnt matter for me if a 2× weakness becomes 4×. But hope if the secondary typing is fire it gets more fire moves. Also i dont think its that hard to design a fire/electric luxray)

(Add ability as levitate.xD)

gimmepie May 8th, 2016 8:46 PM

Electric/Dark is dominating.

Sirfetch’d May 9th, 2016 6:49 AM

I think we know what typing is going to win this...8D

One simply must believe! And make 15 more accounts to stuff the ballot

gimmepie May 11th, 2016 2:39 AM

Electric/Dark it is! Now the question is what ability should we give Mega Luxray?

Personally I'm thinking Contrary might be a good idea. I know that Luxray won't get the STAB off of Superpower that it would as a fighting type, but it's still going to be a powerful move in its arsenal, so we might as well take its drawbacks and turn them into strengths. On top of that it will help scare off potential Landorus switch-ins.

Megan May 11th, 2016 3:19 AM

How about Levitate? Not only does it get rid of its Ground weakness, but it also allows it to become the flying super villain that it always was meant to be.

I'd say Hugh Power, because with some additional basepoints in Attack, even if a Jolly nature, it hits harder than CB sets, while still having the option to change moves.

Alternatively, we could also give it Simple to make use of Howl. However, Intimidate would be pretty devastation, I can imagine.

Earth Traveler May 11th, 2016 3:43 PM

I'm proposing the radical (well maybe not) idea that we create a NEW ability for Luxray. This is because Luxray is obviously a bit, um, lacking in Dark STAB. Crunch, as we know, is its best STAB. So I think we should give some -ate type ability along the lines of Pixilate, etc., preferably for its Dark typing (I think the name should be 'Umbranate') but also possibly for its Electric typing. 'Umbranate' could be very helpful also because it would make Quick Attack a Dark move, possibly making it an actually usable STAB for hitting from its quite underwhelming (at the moment anyway) base 70 Speed.
STAB Return ftw.

gimmepie May 11th, 2016 10:04 PM

I dunno, Crunch isn't exactly a weak move especially with a STAB boost.

Sonata May 11th, 2016 11:52 PM

Strong Jaw or Serene Grace (known in japan as Heavenly Blessing). If we furthered the star motif serene grace would make some sense and could also make luxray quite dangerous with 20% chance to flinch and inflict status with three of its moves and then 40% chance to lower defense with Crunch. but strong jaw is also better for its stability and it makes sense easier with the design. I'ma nominate both.

Etherion May 12th, 2016 1:29 AM

I would suggest: Motor Drive & Aftermath.

The first one would be super helpful if initiated carefully, Luxray could switch in into an Electric attack and get a free speed boost while dishing out attacks. Aftermath would do well with a Choice Band set with Wild Charge/Superpower, plus it's a sinister ability for a Dark-type.

Earth Traveler May 12th, 2016 6:41 AM

Yeah Strong Jaw's almost certainly going to win. It was going to win basically as soon as Luxray became the candidate, so I'm probably to end up voting for that. Well, several options have been nominated, but I feel like if you put a poll in front of everybody, Strong Jaw would probably be the winner. It's certainly not a bad ability but... eh I'll vent later, after the poll.

Fine. Here's my problem with Strong Jaw: I'm worried about Luxray becoming too powerful. I mean, after the Strong Jaw boost and if its Mega Evo gets even a modest +20 to its Attack, it 1-2HKOes some notable Pokemon that are supposed to be walls or bulky (2HKOes Skarmory, Zapdos, Chansey, Blissey, and Tyranitar after rocks; it freaking 2HKOes 248/248+ Primal Kyogre!), so I feel we'd have to nerf its stats to keep balance. If balance isn't a requirement, though, then none of these concerns really matter. So that's what I've been worried about a little with Strong Jaw.

mokonasakura May 13th, 2016 6:08 AM

Before we even go with abilities we need to go with new physical electric moves that don't also kill the user and aren't terrible.

Rock head is the only real ability that would do luxray any good right now and it doesn't fit the pokemon

Sorry but we won't be changing any movesets during Make-a-Mega. There's lots of abilities out there, best to look for one that benefits Luxray as it is now. As a side note, Luxray only has one recoil move (Wild Charge) so Roch Head probably isn't a great option.

Remember guys, ability submissions closes today. In a few hours we'll be voting!

Earth Traveler May 13th, 2016 10:36 PM

Ok, screw my ability 'Umbranate', I officially nominate an Electric equivalent of Pixilate, etc. after feedback from Gimmepie and after reading mokonasakura's post, I think Mega-Luxray needs a decent non-recoil non-broken (*shudders at Strong Jaw*) STAB.

Why do you think Strong Jaw would be broken? Both Thunder Fang and Crunch STAB moves with Strong Jaw are weaker than an Electrified/Umbranated Return. Strong Jaw Thunder Fang, especially, is much weaker than an electric-type Return.

Personally Strong Jaw or Electrilate/Umbranate could all work, but if it gets Strong Jaw it'll need a bigger attack boost.

I felt the problem was less "T-Fang and Crunch are broken" than "Fire Fang and Ice Fang also inflict obscene levels of damage, like 2HKOing physically defensive Zapdos" so I felt the choice was between giving it almost broken coverage or giving it almost broken STAB.

Shadowflare May 14th, 2016 11:47 AM

I think Aftermath or Cursed Body could be good fun. They're not overpowered or cliche, but they're still decent abilities that don't see much use.

FireSnow May 15th, 2016 9:23 AM

Couldn't decide between Strong Jaw and Contrary so I voted them both. I like each of those abilities has to offer to a Pokemon like Luxray

gimmepie May 18th, 2016 8:36 AM

Strong Jaw and Motor Drive tied so I flipped a coin. The ability is Strong Jaw! Time to start submitting stats guys! I'm thinking something like

HP: 80
Atk: 140 (+20)
Def: 119 (+40)
Sp. Atk: 65 (-30)
Sp. Def: 99 (+20)
Spe: 120 (+50)

This gives M-Luxray a really even spread. It's got good Atk (especially if you combine it with biting moves with its ability) and unlike normal Luxray it's got some really solid bulk and a pretty decent Speed. It did have to take some hits to its Sp. Atk, but it doesn't need it's Sp. Atk anymore anyway.

gimmepie May 20th, 2016 6:41 AM

Tomorrow's your last day to submit stats guys! Better make sure to get them in soon!

gimmepie May 21st, 2016 5:40 AM

With no other stats suggested and it being time to start voting, it seems that my stat set gets it. Thanks for participating in this Make-a-Mega to those who did so. Keep an eye out for the Daily article and the next set of polls, both will appear soon.
