Its really hard for me to pick who I want as a starter. I see so many people that like Rowelt and Litten, but not so many that like Poppio. I think back to when X/Y came out and I was in the same position with trying to see who to pick. Than someone leaked the evolution and I went with my starter from there. I think that before the game gets relessed we will know the evolutions and that will make a final choice for people. As of now I would pick Poppio. Its cute, a water type and I think may become something powerful.
|
When I went to pick up the Darkrai Code from EB Games, one of the staff members said she would like Litten.
|
for sure o will go with rowlet! Before the information was given i was playing pokemon sage demo there the grass starter has same typing and i wonder that in sun and moon also same typing of grass and flying shoukd come soooooo..... no option i will go for rowlet!
|
I vote for poplio because he might turn into a ice type in his later evolutions. and since rowlit is a grass/flying poplio will have some advantage if he has the ice type moves.
|
Even though I tend to gravitate to picking the fire type starters, at least in first-time playthroughs...I think that trend might be broken this time around. As of right now, I really want a Rowlet. It's an owl, I just can't resist.
|
Normally I'd go Fire > Grass > Water here but Litten as a gutsy, fluffy mammal Fire-type Pokemon seems over-done to me, we have Cyndaquil and Fennekin (close enough) and Litleo/Pyroar from Kalos and I'm not too hyped over the design. :/ It would be a toss-up between Popplio and Rowlet - it would depend on their evolutions. If Popplio ends up with a cool looking Walrein-esque final evolution, I'd pick it over the the other two, no question.
|
When I first saw the starters, I was a bit thrown off. Not only did they look odd, but they looked a bit similar to one or more of the fake leaks we had seen prior...
Over time though, they quickly grew on me. I quickly became a huge fan of Litten, I wasn't really sure of the other two, though. I was and still am not very big on Rowlet, but a little while after, Popplio grew on me, and I mean really grew on me. I looked at it one time and it just caught on to me how absolutely adorable it was! <3 Litten is absolutely my favorite, Popplio isn't too far behind, and Rowlet's kinda down there. Its design doesn't really do much for me. It's kinda cute and all, but I think I'd like it more if it were proportioned more like a normal owl than its "borb"esque shape. Who knows though, we've yet to see their evolutions, we may see 'em tomorrow, but as for now, and I think will be always the case, Litten is definitely my first choice in the first one I'm going to play, Moon. If I ever get to playing Sun, I'll undoubtedly pick Popplio! |
I'd hate to jump on the bandwagon but I'd immediately choose Litten.
Rowlet has a chance, actually. Popplio just looks plain ridiculous in my opinion but the evolutions could manipulate my views. |
The edgy hot-topic cat has stolen my heart <3
|
Popplio's appeal to me is that it's design is rather simple when compared to Piplup and Oshawott (don't get me wrong, I love Piplup and learned to like Oshawott).
|
I saw some excellent fanart that convinced me of Litten's superiority.

If Litten goes Fire/Dark, I'm picking it. Otherwise, they'll all probably just sit in my PC.
|
In the end it all depend on which Hidden ability and move set they get and also their stats.

Let's hope they get something more useful than what 2 of the 3 Kalos starters got.
Magician and Bulletproof were not that great compared to Protean. |
I am definitely choosing Popplio, again mainly for the design (loving the circus vibe)
Water and Grass have always been my go to starters! |
#Rowlet4Ever! It's so cute and I love owls! It also seems like it'll be a nice addition to my team :)
|
I can see Litten getting Intimidate. Popplio magic bounce. And Rowlet Gale Wings. If Rowlet gets Gale wings as it's HA it's popularity will solidify.
|
Ehh.. I don't know.. Both are.. um.. not bad, but ya..
And the design of Litten is kinda lame.. :d |
I'm glad to know im not alone choosing Popplio. Though, I really hope it's later evolutions do not resemble a clown. I feel it could have much more potential, but as long as it doesn't evolve into looking like a clown.
|
My Starter's gonna be Litten, for sure, I love cats :).
|
I'll be picking Rowlet because I always like to go for the grass starter. However, Popplio is certainly my favrotire of the three.
|
Rowlet! Unless popplio gets a cool evolution.
|
I'm leaning towards Popplio but it could change once the full Evo lines are revealed. I probably won't get Litten though as I feel some starters will always end up unloved. Litten is the most popular currently so I'll probably stay with Rowlet and Popplio.
I do hope they won't drop the ball again like with Emboar. That design felt wrong for Tepig. |
Quote:
The popularity order is Rowlet as most popular, Litten as second most popular, and Popplio as the least popular. In fact it was the same pattern for Unova's starters when they were first revealed - Grass as most praised, Fire as the middle wheel, and Water as the overly hated one. |
I love all of 'em so I wanna use 'em all eventually. But for my main file I think I'll be choosing Rowlet. How can I resist the Coconut Owl. ♥
|
As soon as I saw Litten I knew it was going to be my choice. All 3 look like they have potential though.
|
Ugh my heart ripped in two when I saw the reveal of Rowlet and Litten. They're so adorable. I want to pick Litten in Moon (main file) and Rowlet in Sun because I can't even decide. If either one goes the route of having a disappointing final evolution (e.g. Delphox), then I'll forgo buying the second version at release. I feel neutral about Popplio so far.

Depends heavily on what the final ego's look like and what other Pokemon we see in the regional Dex, but I'm leaning towards Rowlet and Popplio. I don't dislike Litten exactly, but it's a bit too close to Pyroar for me, aesthetically, and the rumored Fire/Ground typing will be pretty hard to work around in a region based around islands and water and (presumably) heavy on Water-type Pokemons.

Figured I'd bump this because I now have a theory as to what stats each starter may specialize in.
In the livestream, the player's Popplio attacked after Hau's Litten and Pichu which likely suggests that Popplio will be the slow bulky starter of the group that also has emphasis on a solid Sp. Attack stat. If you look at previous trios the Grass-type mostly took the bulky route (as shown with every Grass starter except Treecko) and in the case of the ones aside from Snivy, were mainly slow as well. The only time the Water starter was the slow one with the bulky stats was Mudkip, back in 3rd Gen. Litten having the most sleek design of the three suggests it'll be the speedy one of the Alola trio, and will probably also be a special attacker with weak defenses and HP. Going by the fact that three out of six previous gen starter trios had the Fire-type as the fast one, this would be likely. Also, it'll be the first time since 4th Gen that the Fire starter is the fastest of the trio, and while Fennekin had good speed it was still slower than Froakie who was 6th Gen's resident speedy starter. And if that's to go by, Rowlet will likely be a physical attacker since its secondary type (Flying) mainly learns physical attacks, while its other stats will be mainly middle-of-the-road. I could see it still having good Speed, though it'll still be slower than Litten. If Rowlet goes down the middle-of-the-road route stats-wise it'll be a first for the Grass starter, since none of the previous Grass starters went down that path. |
I'm hoping that the final evolutions of the starters are similar to Gens 1-3 design-wise... as in, they have more simplistic animal characteristics instead of having human-like inspirations. We had a ninja, mage/witch, and a knight for the Gen 6 starters, and a sumo wrestler, emperor, and samurai for Gen 5. That probably won't be the case though, since Popplio already seems to have characteristics of a clown. I think that may be why it's my least favorite, because Rowlet and Litten seem to be entirely based on animals while Popplio stands out with both animal and human-like characteristics.
|
Litten. Seems interesting and I wonder what its evo will be. |
I prefered Rowlet at first, but I'm liking Litten over Rowlet now.
However, we still haven't seen any evolutions yet. I wanted to pick Chespin in gen 6 too. And then the abomination called Chesnaught came along. |
As of now, I'm going with Rowlet. Popplio and Litten are also cute (and Litten's a cat, plus the cool factor aaa) but Rowlet being an owl and all.. just tops it for me, birds are my absolute favorite animal ever and owls?? Heck yeah♥ Grass is also one of my favorite types as is Flying, and Rowlet's the second dual-type starter ever. *_*
|
Noctowl is my favorite bird pokemon, owls are my favorite animal, and I was overjoyed at the reveal of these starters. Rowlet from the beginning.
|
I think I changed my mind from Rowlet to Popplio. Dude will try his best all the time. All the hate he is getting makes me sad. Will have to break my streak of always picking the Grass starter first though.
|
I really REALLY tried to fight my urge to pick the Fire starter for my first playthrough, but I just couldn't when it comes to Litten. I feel like my combined love of Fire types, Houndoom & Arcanine, and cats will suit Litten just fine.
However, I do really like Rowlet as well. I used a Noctowl way back in the days of G/S/C, and Rowlet just sparks those memories all over again. Rowlet will definitely be my second starter choice, possibly in a new save file or the other version of the game. |
I loved all the starts for this new generation, but I have to admit, I fell in love with Popplio.
I'm a super fan of water-type Pokémon, and I've always picked the water starter in every generation, so .... I think this one wouldn't be different... Plus, popplio is a sea lion, and I love sea lions. I know ... it has that circus theme on it, but still .... it is super cute <3 |
I'm surprised by the love for Rowlet I was sure Litten would take first spot that being said I am team Rowlet I love owls

Popplio for Moon and Rowlet for Sun.
I'll probably choose Litten when I inevitably start a new game on one of them. |
Can I hate all three? I mean, WTF is this!? Each Generation has one I like based off looks alone. Before playing I tend to look at final evolutions to see which looks the best. Let's face it, any starter can get you through the games with minimal/no help. I mean I even played Gen I picking Charmander and beat the first two gyms, (and the rest), with him alone. Elite Four? How about Epic Charizard?
As of right now, I feel this is probably the weakest Gen for starters. Not a single one I like. I will have to see their final evolutions. |

Honestly, even though by looks they aren't my favorite, I think these are the most thought out starters in existence, with each one being based on a real animal that's also endangered. Rowlet isn't the most colorful grass-type ever, but he has a pleasing, round appearance fitting of a young, first stage pokemon. He also has grass elements: his bowtie and the leaffeathers on his wings. He also has the cute quirk of turning his head around to receive orders in battle, and sending leaves hurtling forward when he swipes his wing. Litten is currently my least favorite, but he has a simple yet creative design that somehow comes off as bright and colorful even though the majority of his fur is black. At first I didn't like the fur tufts on his face, but his design would be a lot blander without them. He also has a quirk that seems almost obvious and brings up many cute scenarios - his furballs that light on fire. Popplio was my least favorite to start with, but now he's grown on me with his bright colors and body shape that is somehow sleek and clumsy/dorky at the same time. His party hat nose is nice looking also, at the additional artwork for him gives off the idea of a fun, quirky pokemon who loves to clown around and playfully show off. Sorry for the length, but I'm getting sick with people trashing them and I just had to defend them. |

My personal least fave starters are actually Kanto's but I guess it's because they're all reptilian and not as diverse as the other trios, but I can still understand the fan appeal. I know you want to wait for the fully-evolved stages of the Alola starters but we likely won't get them revealed until after the games are released so maybe when you see the middle stages (which I guess could be revealed in September or October) it could give you a better idea of which one you may end up liking since I'm sure one starter will grow on you and end up becoming your fave after all. |
I'm definitely going with Rowlet when I first get the game. Really like all the fan art and fan gifs of the Pokemon which has me choosing grass for the fourth generation in a row. But it'll probably have the lamest final-evo of the three because that's usually what happens :/
|
See I'm the opposite here, I really thought the Kalos starters looked great, until their final evolutions came along, all of which were garbage imo.
The fact that they are based on real animals has nothing to do with it imo. Most Pokémon aren't, I don't see it being significant. The fact that the real animals are endangered is even less of a concern, Biology has taught me many things and the "Endangered List" isn't really significant. Most animals can be considered such or could be put on the list very soon. I'm sorry, reality doesn't have to factor in to my fantasy, usually I would prefer that it didn't. This is one of those times. I play Pokémon to have fun, I go to school to learn about Biology, what is endangered and what isn't. |
I Love rowlets look but i will choose popplio. I always take water-type since i Was child. I really hate popplios look but i will pick him anyway because im loyal to water-types :)
|
Wow, I didn't think Popplio would be last Q_Q (I'm choosing that one as well)

I'm going with Litten! It's just too cute! ^.^ Also in ORAS I chose Mudkip and in XY I chose Chespin. So it's time to choose a fire-type starter!
I'm officially #TeamLitten now! |
For the play through of the game, it's a an easy one for me...all three. The question is which will be best competitively?

I'm definitely team Rowlet. It is so freaking cute. Ahhhhh. <3
|
I'm torn between Rowlet and Popplio. I've picked Oshawott and Froakie in Gens V and VI respectively, so Popplio seems like the right pick for me, especially since it seems to be the least favorite among the starter trio like the last two were at first, but at the same time Rowlet really catches my eye as well and it'd be nice to pick a Grass starter since the last time I chose one as my main starter was Treecko in Emerald.
|
From the first stages, I'm torn between Rowlet and Litten. I love cats and recently I have been gaining a good amount of love for birds. But my friend also loves birds so we might rival it and I'll take Litten. However, if that leak happens to be true, I might just get Popplio because holy wow that is a cool design, I also really like that Rowlet evolution, and the Litten one is okay but it's definitely not what I wanted Litten to become. It might grow on me though, or they could all just be fake anyways. Still loving these starters, Game Freak rarely disappoint when it comes to them.
|
Litten for Moon and Rowlet for Sun.
Litten is one of those starter Pokemon that I immediately just fell in love with, similarly to Fennekin. I'm hoping their evolutions don't disappoint but regardless I'll still most probably choose Litten on my first playthrough. 8) |
So with the rumored final evos leak going around I'll say that I'm still picking Popplio. The concept of a siren (aka a mermaid-like mythical creature) fits so well with the rumored Water/Fairy typing and learning Disarming Voice and it looks so majestic.
Rowlet is still my second fave in light of the rumor given I like the supposed archer concept, while Litten seems to be the one I don't like as much, presumably because it's likely continuing the bipedal Fire starter evolution trend. |

I'm #teamlitten all the way!
Dont get me wrong i like Rowlet hes super adorable and has a super cool design buuut i dont usually tend to go with grass type starters or grass types in general :3 And Popillo tbh is alittle boring. I dont like the design at all and at this point im just hoping for a cool HA or typing. |
Litten.. no matter what evolutions are like, because there is always the everstone
