Actually, it's Rowlet who's the most popular at the moment. At least according to a lot of S/M-related polls right now.

The popularity order is Rowlet as most popular, Litten as second most popular, and Popplio as the least popular. In fact it was the same pattern for Unova's starters when they were first revealed - Grass as most praised, Fire as the middle wheel, and Water as the overly hated one.

Luzu June 7th, 2016 4:11 PM

I love all of 'em so I wanna use 'em all eventually. But for my main file I think I'll be choosing Rowlet. How can I resist the Coconut Owl. ♥

youngster_joey June 8th, 2016 3:00 PM

As soon as I saw Litten I knew it was going to be my choice. All 3 look like they have potential though.

TwilightBlade June 8th, 2016 7:02 PM

Ugh my heart ripped in two when I saw the reveal of Rowlet and Litten. They're so adorable. I want to pick Litten in Moon (main file) and Rowlet in Sun because I can't even decide. If either one goes the route of having a disappointing final evolution (e.g. Delphox), then I'll forgo buying the second version at release. I feel neutral about Popplio so far.

That might marginalise Litten a bit much. In addition, not sure about giving the grass starter a flying-type ability. This is especially the case if they plan on keeping it a signature move. They might prefer something new and grass-related, or akin to Greninja's, etc.

Livewire June 8th, 2016 8:00 PM

Depends heavily on what the final ego's look like and what other Pokemon we see in the regional Dex, but I'm leaning towards Rowlet and Popplio. I don't dislike Litten exactly, but it's a bit too close to Pyroar for me, aesthetically, and the rumored Fire/Ground typing will be pretty hard to work around in a region based around islands and water and (presumably) heavy on Water-type Pokemons.

Yeah, but unless Rowlet loses flying it should have access to a flying type related ability.

Figured I'd bump this because I now have a theory as to what stats each starter may specialize in.

In the livestream, the player's Popplio attacked after Hau's Litten and Pichu which likely suggests that Popplio will be the slow bulky starter of the group that also has emphasis on a solid Sp. Attack stat. If you look at previous trios the Grass-type mostly took the bulky route (as shown with every Grass starter except Treecko) and in the case of the ones aside from Snivy, were mainly slow as well. The only time the Water starter was the slow one with the bulky stats was Mudkip, back in 3rd Gen.

Litten having the most sleek design of the three suggests it'll be the speedy one of the Alola trio, and will probably also be a special attacker with weak defenses and HP. Going by the fact that three out of six previous gen starter trios had the Fire-type as the fast one, this would be likely. Also, it'll be the first time since 4th Gen that the Fire starter is the fastest of the trio, and while Fennekin had good speed it was still slower than Froakie who was 6th Gen's resident speedy starter.

And if that's to go by, Rowlet will likely be a physical attacker since its secondary type (Flying) mainly learns physical attacks, while its other stats will be mainly middle-of-the-road. I could see it still having good Speed, though it'll still be slower than Litten. If Rowlet goes down the middle-of-the-road route stats-wise it'll be a first for the Grass starter, since none of the previous Grass starters went down that path.

WingsofBliss June 25th, 2016 4:32 AM

I'm hoping that the final evolutions of the starters are similar to Gens 1-3 design-wise... as in, they have more simplistic animal characteristics instead of having human-like inspirations. We had a ninja, mage/witch, and a knight for the Gen 6 starters, and a sumo wrestler, emperor, and samurai for Gen 5. That probably won't be the case though, since Popplio already seems to have characteristics of a clown. I think that may be why it's my least favorite, because Rowlet and Litten seem to be entirely based on animals while Popplio stands out with both animal and human-like characteristics.

World King June 25th, 2016 5:47 AM

Litten. Seems interesting and I wonder what its evo will be.

Dracowyn June 25th, 2016 11:58 AM

I prefered Rowlet at first, but I'm liking Litten over Rowlet now.

However, we still haven't seen any evolutions yet. I wanted to pick Chespin in gen 6 too. And then the abomination called Chesnaught came along.

Flower June 27th, 2016 7:11 PM

As of now, I'm going with Rowlet. Popplio and Litten are also cute (and Litten's a cat, plus the cool factor aaa) but Rowlet being an owl and all.. just tops it for me, birds are my absolute favorite animal ever and owls?? Heck yeah♥ Grass is also one of my favorite types as is Flying, and Rowlet's the second dual-type starter ever. *_*

Aether June 29th, 2016 7:14 PM

Noctowl is my favorite bird pokemon, owls are my favorite animal, and I was overjoyed at the reveal of these starters. Rowlet from the beginning.

EC June 30th, 2016 1:56 PM

I think I changed my mind from Rowlet to Popplio. Dude will try his best all the time. All the hate he is getting makes me sad. Will have to break my streak of always picking the Grass starter first though.

Sgt. Heracross July 1st, 2016 9:59 PM

I really REALLY tried to fight my urge to pick the Fire starter for my first playthrough, but I just couldn't when it comes to Litten. I feel like my combined love of Fire types, Houndoom & Arcanine, and cats will suit Litten just fine.

However, I do really like Rowlet as well. I used a Noctowl way back in the days of G/S/C, and Rowlet just sparks those memories all over again. Rowlet will definitely be my second starter choice, possibly in a new save file or the other version of the game.

I loved all the starts for this new generation, but I have to admit, I fell in love with Popplio.
I'm a super fan of water-type Pokémon, and I've always picked the water starter in every generation, so .... I think this one wouldn't be different... Plus, popplio is a sea lion, and I love sea lions. I know ... it has that circus theme on it, but still .... it is super cute <3

MirraJade July 3rd, 2016 2:50 PM

I'm surprised by the love for Rowlet I was sure Litten would take first spot that being said I am team Rowlet I love owls

People seem to favour cute over cool, and Rowlet's round shape already gives it a plus for being cute. Couple that with his leafy bow tie and being the first dual-typed base starter since Bulbasaur and you have what is the fan favorite starter of Generation 7. However, when the evolutions get revealed that could all change who the favorite really is.

Perriechu July 3rd, 2016 3:33 PM

Popplio for Moon and Rowlet for Sun.

I'll probably choose Litten when I inevitably start a new game on one of them.

Azire July 5th, 2016 10:06 AM

Can I hate all three? I mean, WTF is this!? Each Generation has one I like based off looks alone. Before playing I tend to look at final evolutions to see which looks the best. Let's face it, any starter can get you through the games with minimal/no help. I mean I even played Gen I picking Charmander and beat the first two gyms, (and the rest), with him alone. Elite Four? How about Epic Charizard?

As of right now, I feel this is probably the weakest Gen for starters. Not a single one I like. I will have to see their final evolutions.

I see this every generation. Some people will always hate all the pokemon in the beginning. If we're going to submit the weakest starter trio based on first stages designs alone, I'd submit the bland and mostly not very colorful Kalos starter trio. I like them all, but they just aren't as appealing as some of the other starters.

Honestly, even though by looks they aren't my favorite, I think these are the most thought out starters in existence, with each one being based on a real animal that's also endangered.

Rowlet isn't the most colorful grass-type ever, but he has a pleasing, round appearance fitting of a young, first stage pokemon. He also has grass elements: his bowtie and the leaffeathers on his wings. He also has the cute quirk of turning his head around to receive orders in battle, and sending leaves hurtling forward when he swipes his wing.

Litten is currently my least favorite, but he has a simple yet creative design that somehow comes off as bright and colorful even though the majority of his fur is black. At first I didn't like the fur tufts on his face, but his design would be a lot blander without them. He also has a quirk that seems almost obvious and brings up many cute scenarios - his furballs that light on fire.

Popplio was my least favorite to start with, but now he's grown on me with his bright colors and body shape that is somehow sleek and clumsy/dorky at the same time. His party hat nose is nice looking also, at the additional artwork for him gives off the idea of a fun, quirky pokemon who loves to clown around and playfully show off.

Sorry for the length, but I'm getting sick with people trashing them and I just had to defend them.

Like SolarSnivy said, every generation may have what people view as the "weakest" starters although you have to admit that the Alola starters are more thought-out compared to previous starters, since Rowlet, Litten and Popplio are all based on an endangered animal - the Pueo owl, Iriomote cat and Hawaiian monk seal respectively.

My personal least fave starters are actually Kanto's but I guess it's because they're all reptilian and not as diverse as the other trios, but I can still understand the fan appeal. I know you want to wait for the fully-evolved stages of the Alola starters but we likely won't get them revealed until after the games are released so maybe when you see the middle stages (which I guess could be revealed in September or October) it could give you a better idea of which one you may end up liking since I'm sure one starter will grow on you and end up becoming your fave after all.

Diarkia124 July 5th, 2016 2:46 PM

I'm definitely going with Rowlet when I first get the game. Really like all the fan art and fan gifs of the Pokemon which has me choosing grass for the fourth generation in a row. But it'll probably have the lamest final-evo of the three because that's usually what happens :/

Azire July 5th, 2016 5:14 PM

See I'm the opposite here, I really thought the Kalos starters looked great, until their final evolutions came along, all of which were garbage imo.

The fact that they are based on real animals has nothing to do with it imo. Most Pokémon aren't, I don't see it being significant. The fact that the real animals are endangered is even less of a concern, Biology has taught me many things and the "Endangered List" isn't really significant. Most animals can be considered such or could be put on the list very soon.

I'm sorry, reality doesn't have to factor in to my fantasy, usually I would prefer that it didn't. This is one of those times. I play Pokémon to have fun, I go to school to learn about Biology, what is endangered and what isn't.

Pearlie July 5th, 2016 9:47 PM

I Love rowlets look but i will choose popplio. I always take water-type since i Was child. I really hate popplios look but i will pick him anyway because im loyal to water-types :)
