Make-a-Mega 3: Finished
Make-a-Mega We all know that there’s a lot of Pokemon that just plain suck competitively. However, the introduction of mega-evolution as a mechanic allowed many Pokemon that would otherwise be very weak to suddenly become very usable. In the case of some Pokemon (ie. Lucario or Mawile), their mega-evolutions give them such a boost that they jump from lower tiers into Ubers. So, for the Daily series Make-a-Mega, we’re going to take a Pokemon that is ordinarily quite weak and create a mega-evolution that will render it usable in a higher tier. In the Make-a-Mega just passed, we took Luxray and changed it from being useless competitively to a brutal physical attacker with an even more fabulous design. Now it's time to do the same for another Pokemon. First we'll select which Pokemon we'll focus on, then as we develop its typing, ability and stats PC's dazzling artists over in Art & Design will develop a design. Week-by-week breakdown Week One: Pokemon is determined Week Two: A&D work begins, type change (if any) is determined. Week Three: Ability change (if any) is determined. Week Four: Stat changes are determined. Featured design is selected. Each week (excluding the artwork) is broken down into three days where ideas are suggested and then a four day poll to determine which idea we apply. The article is then written and published as the next polling process begins. Guidelines

I'll nominate Feraligatr.
Nominating Butterfree. If Beedrill can get a mega, why can't Butterfree?!
I'm going to throw Weezing out there again as I feel it would benefit greatly from a Mega.
I'm going to suggest Ursaring.
It's always been portrayed as powerful and badass in the media, has a killer design, a decent movepool and a great attack stat but is still completely useless because its other stats are terrible. I'd like to see it get a much needed boost. |
I'll recommend Carracosta. The fifth gen needs more megas, and Carracosta seems like a fine candidate. We didn't do a Water or Rock type yet, Carracosta has untapped potential(just look at that moveset), and everyone loves a fossil 'mon.
I thought about suggesting Tentacruel again but I'd like to go down a different road and suggest Shiftry. Shiftry is an average Pokemon for the most part but has a really cool move in Defog, which is uncommon outside of flying types. I feel like with it's solid movepool, mixed stats, and great offensive typing we could really make it into a formidable OU Defogger.
I'll nominate Mudkip
I will second Usaring, it's one of my favorites. Also I think butterfree/slowking/froslass would be good choices but I'm sticking with Usaring. |
Alright! Round 3, here we go~
I'll nominate, Torterra :) |

I'd like to nominate Girafarig! This guy needs a definite boost in his stats. :D

I'm nominating Lapras. Still no idea why GameFreak haven't given it a mega yet
Nominating RAPIDASH cuz I need a Fire/Fairy RIGHT NOW!!
The poll is up!
A Rapidash mega would be pretty awesome!
I voted for both Zoroark and Shiftry.
I will nominate Feraligatr. He is definitely on my top 10.
Nominated Feraligatr because I love using it since it is such an underrated threat. Both Sheer Force and Torrent are great abilities for it as well.
Went with Weezing and Rapidash. Both would benefit greatly and would allow for potentially awesome, unique types!
Lapras it is.My most fav water type in firered
Going For RAPIDASH cuz fire/fairy pegasus <3
Also If Mega Beedrill, why not Mega Butterfree! |
I nominated Torterra. Aside from being very bad in OU thanks to how outclassed it is at the moment, being a Rock Polish user that is outsped by several Choice Scarf users sucks, so it could use a Speed increase. A Mega Evolution would also make room for augmentation of Torterra's already solid bulk. Sadly, its power is already only average, and considering Mega Pokemon can't use Life Orb, a Mega Torterra runs the risk of being weaker than its base forme. However, its Attack could always be increased to make up for this, and it's not as if other Megas are free of this issue. Losing Life Orb could possibly even help Mega Torterra, as it wouldn't be killing itself every time it attacks.
by looking at the poll, I think we will need another poll...
Butterfree, Lapras, Rapidash, Feraligatr and Weezing are pretty close by looking the number of votes.. :) |

Everyone vote for lapras or face the apocalypse!
Kinda sad that Shifty isn't going to win but I will be happy with whoever does tbh. All of these are fine choices.
Lapras it is! So, are we making any typing changes?
Lapras needs a typing change badly, Water/ice doesn't do much for it. I'm gonna nominate Water/Fairy. Water should be kept since, you know, it can't go on land(and I doubt the design team is gonna change that trait).
Fairy would be a nice add-on to fit how elegant it is. Fairy is also connected to mythos, and Lapras is based on the loch ness monster. It's a great defensive typing for bulk, and lastly... it's a pun on Lapras being a ferry. A Fairy ferrry. You know you love it. |
I can't help but think that Water/Dragon would be a good fit for Lapras since it seems to be based on Nessie or a plesiosaur kind of thing.
I think Water-Psychic would be pretty great since it takes away its SR weakness and gives it STAB on Psychic. Not to mention Starmie and Slowbro have that typing, and I'd say their careers have gone pretty well.
I thibk Water/Fairy or Ice/Fairy would fit a M. Lapras
Seconding Water/Psychic. I think Dragon would also be more suitable, than Fairy.
Water/Dragon or Ice/Dragon.

Lapras is such a majestic Pokemon, so either Water/Fairy or Water/Dragon suits me (with Dragon being slightly more fitting). However, what do you guys think of adding the Flying-type instead? I remember Lapras flying in Explorers of T/D/S and I reckon some great designs could come out of that typing!
Water/Fairy is not a bad idea in theory but afaik, Lapras doesn't even get Fairy moves so it would be rather useless. Water/Psychic is probably the best typing for it as it gives it some nifty resistances as well as taking away it's weakness to SR. Lapras is also blessed with quite a few good Psychic moves such as Psychic and Zen Headbutt(it gets Dragon Dance so maybe we could go down the route of turning this thing into a physical attacker?) Water/Dragon makes sense too but is honestly a bit boring IMO.
I vote for Raichu.
I really like the reasoning with Water/Psychic, it really would help a lot but I'm very partial to Water/Dragon and would love to see what would come of that typing for it.
Quote:
"Some Lapras are able to develop Psychic abilities such as telepathy,[5] which makes them able to understand human speech." Since the above and also has psychic moves, just slap water/psychic on it. PS: What the hell, just slapping fairy/dragon for basically resistances is just plain stupid imo. |
The poll is up!
I can't believe I missed this thread until now. Pretty happy to see Lapras being voted to go up next though!
I voted for Water/fairy, simply design-wise speaking I see it being more water/fairy or water/dragon over anything else. Ice type needs to be dropped over water, I just don't see it staying. :'( The issue is, though, what Castform brought up. Fairy type would be a waste if Lapras doesn't even learn any fairy-type moves? :/ |
I've been swayed to the Water/Psychic side. So much good reasoning to me and I love the potential possibilities for it!
Voted Water/Psychic for obvious reasons
Voted for Water/Dragon, Water/Fairy, Ice/Dragon, and Ice/Fairy. I just don't see making a slightly better Starmie or Slowbro(depending on if we go sweeper or bulk) very fun. Water/Flying could be cool design-wise but I fear a typing like that would doom the mega.
I gave my votes to Water/Dragon and Water/Psychic. Apart from being the best fits mythos and design-wise I think both make for really good type combinations and compliment Lapras' movepool nicely.
fairy makes zero sense, mega Lapras stay water or water/dragon, thats very obvious.
I say hitmonchan
Water/Dragon and Water/Psychic as I have mentioned. Fairy simply does not suit it.
Mega lapras should be water and ice/psychic
Water/Dragon got the win. Time to look at ideas for an ability now!
What about Drizzle or Competitive/Defiant(depending on if we want it to be a special or physical attacker? I feel like the latter would give Lapras a more offensive presence if we were to go down the route of wanting to make it an offensive mon.

Considering its lack of recovery, Regenerator sounds like a reasonable choice to me also. |
I want something that traces back to it's ice roots (when it wasn't weak to dragon types :p) , so maybe an ability that won't make it weak against Dragon types?
But otherwise Regenerator sounds good from a Mega-Lapras :3 |
Regenerator is a great choice as well. Afaik the only recovery Lapras has is Rest! The good thing about Regenerator is that it can work well with offensive or defensive Pokemon.
I was actually thinking maybe Mold Breaker, to help it get around what I think one of its main counters would be: Unaware Clefable. Competitive could be cool though.
Ability poll is up!
I really like Competitive and find it to be quite useful for M-Lapras
You know, I might be wrong, but I think Regenerator is going to win.
I would have liked to see Multiscale or Marvel Scale. Rest would reactivate Multiscale and activate Marvel Scale. Could have went the generic CroCune build that way with Rest, Sleep Talk, Calm Mind and Scald. Marvel Scale wouldn't be bad on a Lapras design wise because of how elegant it's portrayed. A shame I only found this after the poll was closed.

Regenerator gets it this time! So now let's look at the stats. Personally I'm thinking something like
HP: 130 Atk: 105 (+20) Def: 110 (+30) Sp. Atk: 105 (+20) Sp. Def: 125 (+30) Spe: 60 With these stats, Mega Lapras is an extremely bulky Pokemon with the capacity to do some reasonable damage as well. Regenerator provides it with recovery whilst its new typing gives it more resistances and neutralities than Water/Ice did. A physical set would probably work best. Something like DDance/Curse, Iron Head, Ice Shard, Waterfall? It also has access to great utility moves like Heal Bell, Toxic and Mist as well as lots of good Special moves also though. |

HP: 130
Atk: 105 (+20) Def: 90 (+10) SpA: 125 (+40) SpD: 105 (+10) Spe: 80 (+20) I put a ton into Special Attack since Lapras has no way to boost it (that, and Dragon isn't the best offensive type) and some into speed so that it can hit a fairly high speed tier after setting up with Dragon Dance. It could Curse up as well, but I feel with this stat spread it's more suited to be a bulky, relatively unpredictable mixed sweeper. |
HP: 130
Atk: 120 (+35) Def: 90 (+10) Sp. Atk: 100 (+15) Sp. Def: 110 (+15) Spe: 85 (+25) I ll go for some speed investment and less defenses because its already very bulky and since it got a type change so it has lots of resistances now. Also, regenerator.. I also want it to be a DD user since it has an array of physical moves.. |
Voting time!
Looks like the first set gets it. Thanks for contributing to this everyone! The article will be up shortly!
