Dual-type moves

In X/Y we saw what could be classed as the first (and only) dual type move. Flying Press is described as being a move that despite being a Fighting-type move, the damage dealt is actually a combination of Fighting and Flying types, and thus its effectiveness against a given Pokémon differs from other Fighting-type moves.

Moving forward onto Sun & Moon do you think it is possible that we will see more of these types of moves introduced? Would you like to see more dual type moves? Is it possible that some existing moves may become dual-typed i.e Muddy Water, Steel Wing ect.

Discuss!

Xertified May 28th, 2016 7:47 AM

Awww man, you got a point.

Not to mention Steel should be weak to Flying since Rust,

Hikamaru May 28th, 2016 7:52 AM

It would be a fun concept to see more dual-typed moves, but with Sugimori saying there's a "return to simplicity" approach with these games I am kinda doubting it.

WingsofBliss May 28th, 2016 7:53 AM

I'd really like to see more moves like this. It certainly makes battles in-game more interesting, and I imagine the competitive crowd would like it too. Those kinds of moves would make it more of a challenge and allow you to come up with some interesting strategies.

MarinoKadame May 28th, 2016 8:05 AM

Imagine some Dark/Fairy move related to the .oon.

I could see the same for Fire/Electric move plasma beam related to the Sun.

smocks May 29th, 2016 12:46 PM

If there are dual-type moves, I would only like to see only a few moves become dual-type. Preferably Legendaries' Signature Moves be dual-type.

GoldenAltaria May 29th, 2016 6:23 PM

I wouldn't mind giving the legendaries dual-type attacks, but I certainly wouldn't want GameFreak to go overboard in terms of doling out dual-type moves. In my opinion, I think Flying Press was an experiment; if it was well-received, GameFreak would make more dual-type attacks, and if it wasn't, they would stop there.

Bobbylicious May 29th, 2016 6:58 PM

I don't really care if we see them - if they include more then cool, if not, also cool. I've never cared about the competitive scene anyway so regardless if they introduce more doesn't affect me.

Desert Stream~ May 29th, 2016 6:59 PM

For someone who hated gen 6 because the type chart got changed, I actually liked it. lol. It does bring back some of the strategy aspect recent games have been lacking.

MarinoKadame May 29th, 2016 7:11 PM

Also Flying Press only take stab from the first type and not the second.

Only Fighting type pokemons receive stab on it and items like Sky Plate, Flying Gem and Coba Berry wont work on it.

If Flying Press is used while under the effect of Electrify or Normalize, damage is calculated using Flying type and Electric or Normal type modifiers instead.

OmegaRuby and AlphaSapphire May 29th, 2016 7:24 PM

Imagine a Water/Ground move used against a Fire/Rock type...

I think they could've made the signature moves of the Hoenn starters dual type, at least Muddy Water and Blaze Kick.

That's a good reason not to have dual moves where the two types are both effective against the same type. Would a Water/Ground move do more than super-effective damage to a Fire-type, and something ridiculous to a Fire/Rock-type? Super-effective damage is already pretty powerful. If they have to include more double moves I think they're got to be ones with no overlap.

mokonasakura May 29th, 2016 9:05 PM

I don't like the idea, move coverage is already really easy to make it so you are almost always super effecting what comes out, with a move that has 2 types it would just make it even easier making competitive even worse then it currently is. I will admit a couple special moves every game for specific pokemon would be ok but if it just becomes the natural everyone gets these now then no I don't want them.

MarinoKadame May 29th, 2016 9:10 PM

Dual-type moves will mostly be niche to certain pokemons.

Only Hawlucha, Pikachu Libre and Smeargle can use Flying Press for example.

Yeah, it'll be OP.
Actually part Ground, Fighting, Normal, Psychic, and Dragon run into a problem when used against Flying, Ghost ×2, Dark, and Fairy respectively. Or would it only calculate like half the damage?

MarinoKadame May 29th, 2016 9:14 PM

Only the first type the one shown for the move will be used as Stab and being powered by the type items. The second one is just the usual x1 damage like when using a move that is not STAB.

Anyway for balance issue the Dual-Type moves will be limited only to a few pokemons.

OmegaRuby and AlphaSapphire May 29th, 2016 11:00 PM

I can see the starters get them if they're all dual typed like in Gen IV and VI.

It would be a fun concept, but like the others said I can't see many dual-typed moves becoming a thing due to the likeliness of the complexity the competitive scene would face. Flying Press I'll give a pass because it was initially introduced as a signature move for Hawlucha, but after seeing the issues that could happen with damage calculation I probably don't want to see more dual-typed moves.

MarinoKadame May 30th, 2016 7:56 AM

Dual-type moves will be limited for balance issue and given only to a niche few pokemons.

It would be used for a legendary or a single pokemon like Hawlucha.

It's kind of like the type adding moves that Trevenant and Gourgeist lines got.

We now can give pokemon a triple typing with those moves.

Rivvon May 30th, 2016 3:47 PM

I would not like to see any more "dual-typed" moves. Knowing one of these kinds of moves gives the Pokémon in question access to up to 5 different Type coverages whereas other Pokémon only have access to 4. There's a reason why Pokémon can only learn up to 4 moves and it's for this similar kind of balancing. If dual-typed moves became too common I can only imagine it breaking the balance the game has going for it (which, it can be argued, is already rather shaky). Not to mention the complexity regarding matters such as "does it get STAB once or twice?" or "what if the target Pokémon is weak to both Types of this attack?"

MarinoKadame May 30th, 2016 6:00 PM

Dual-Type move only get stab from the first type listed, Flying Press only STAB with Fighting and any items enhancing Flying wont work on it.

I could see more Dual-Type move but they will be limited to a single pokemon for balancing issue.

Only Hawlucha had Flying Press with Smeargle and ORAS just added Pikachu Libre with it, otherwise no one else can use it. Any other Dual-Type moves will be the same as it will be limited to a single pokemon except if you got Special cases like Pikachu Libre.

Somewhere_ May 30th, 2016 6:19 PM

I like the idea, but I dont want dual type moves to be too widespread or overpowered.

blue June 6th, 2016 10:50 AM

Since learning that Professor Kukui focuses on Pokemon Attacks, I'm definitely thinking that Dual-type moves are all the more plausiable for Pokemon Sun & Moon.

Each Professor seems to study in a field that correlates to something that was introduced in that generation. Professor Elm studied Pokemon Eggs which happened to be introduced in Gold & Silver, Birch studied Pokemon Habitats which was one of the focuses with the introduction of weather, natures and what not and then Rowan specialized in Pokemon Evolution with the fourth generation introducing several new ways to evolve and many existing Pokemon receiving new evolutions to their lines. The point I'm making is that if Professor Kukui researches Pokemon attacks, perhaps he is trying to understand how Dual-type moves work?

George C June 6th, 2016 9:19 PM

I like the idea of dual type moves. But personally I just want to them to special to specific pokemon. e.g legendarys, important pokemon from the story.

I am doubting that will happen. Hawlucha and a lot of water types were able to learn Flying Press and whatever the water type move is. It would also be rather useless to only give it to Legends when the legends, for most part, are banned from competitions. So I don't think they will just give them to legends.

I think Flying Press worked great. So I think will may see a few more of these in the future.

I also don't think older moves will be changed. I think if they planned to do that, they would have done it in Kalos.
