Daily Chit-Chat: What even is this?

Wooo!

I'll be doing some regular features, such as Periodic Element of the Week, and we'll have some fun stuff coming up too. :)

Legendary Silke June 5th, 2016 8:54 PM

Aaaaaaaaaaaand now I'm back to my usual "Noivern noi" self.

Computers sure are dust magnets.

Would you like to dust them off? We have plenty of compressed air up in the cabinets. :P

Ahh, this is taking me back to my first semester of college being in a chemistry class and using Bunsen burners <3

KetsuekiR June 5th, 2016 10:24 PM

Oh hey, cool. :)

Spoiler:
YES YES YES EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA THIS NEEDED TO BE HERE KUSAGDGJWSGDS

killer-curry June 5th, 2016 10:31 PM

So finally we can talk more about science rather than techs stuff.

obviously it is very advantageous for college students

You know what I mean.

Desinishon June 5th, 2016 10:41 PM

There are some topics I want to post but don't know if they fit or not...and what did this " KUSAGDGJWSGDS" mean ketsu xD.

Candy June 5th, 2016 11:16 PM

YES! SCIENCE!

Hikamaru June 5th, 2016 11:22 PM

This is interesting... a tech forum becoming a science forum

Return June 5th, 2016 11:49 PM

A Science Forum? That's so cool!

Cooool.

So, how sciency would you guys say that you are?

Very. It's pretty much the thing I'm most passionate about. xD I have a feeling this forum will be taking up too much of my time. xD And you?

I'm not actually passionate about it, I just happen to work with it d: Not sure how I ended up making that life decision lmao. I work as a R&D engineer at a research institute.

Probably not enough to actually perform experiments on my own, but I at least have a basic understanding of chemistry, physics and astronomy. xD

Maybe meteorology too. hmm

Xertified June 6th, 2016 6:49 AM

Time for some knowledge.

Tai! Tai Lopez, help me out bro!

Ugh, more change. :P

I'm not very science-y sadly, though I remember liking it a tiny bit when I took it in Middle school. I did more natural/greenhouse science then regular chemistry in highschool.

Desert Stream~ June 6th, 2016 11:41 AM

Wow this is up already? I expected to wait until the mall's final decision was made. I'm so glad this won though, science is awesome.

I also like how this merged with Computers and Technology, this definatly will broaden the discussion.

Tsutarja June 6th, 2016 3:09 PM

By the way, I was asked about this today, and if anybody here works in any area of science and wants to talk about their field and life as a scientist, we'd love to get some Scientist AMAs up and running!

I have an environmental science degree, a published article, and some conference/teaching experience and I love talking to people about science, so I'd be more than happy to volunteer. I'm brand new but I'm definitely glad to see this new section :)

Radix June 6th, 2016 7:41 PM

Web developer and computer scientist. I'm up for an AMA.

Tsutarja June 6th, 2016 8:44 PM

Good news! Jordan and myself agreed to let AMAs begin! We'll be kicking those off shortly, with more details to come. 8)

Also coming soon is "Element of the Week!" Hope you chemistry folks look forward to that! ;D

I guess I'll just treat this thread as if it were like the old times then :)

I'm considering moving on from Windows Phone once my phone dies... Too many people on Discord lately.

I'm the same. I still have my nokia brick (nokia c1-01). And I only bought that one because my Nokia 3310's battery started dying and only lasted a few hours.

A lot of people have been trying to convince me to buy a smartphone. But I really don't want to only because it seems like you have to charge them pretty much every day while I think charging my current one every 2 weeks is already a chore.

bobandbill June 7th, 2016 5:07 AM

toot

Interested to see how this section goes. :)

Seeing some of us said what we do, I'm a PhD student atm in physics, specifically radio astronomy. Observing and data analysis/programming is part of that research.

Lycanthropy June 7th, 2016 11:14 AM

As a chemistry student, I'm more like a wannabe scientist at the moment. But hey, it gives me at least an excuse to step by here more often!

Now let's see how this place is going to develop itself.

Sir Codin June 7th, 2016 2:54 PM

Maybe I can do some biology stuff for this forum sometimes. Right now I'm a Bachelor of Science in Biology looking for a job and failing so I'm also now looking for post-graduate internships.

If I do regular bio-stuff in this forum, it'll help refresh my knowledge at least.

EC June 7th, 2016 6:16 PM

Loved Chem II in high school. Favorite lab we did was brewing rum.

Dracowyn June 8th, 2016 3:53 AM

Oh also, more on topic, I don't have a science degree (I'm just a nurse and even though I've had my fair share of human anatomy, pathology, bacteriology/virology/parasitology, it's not that detailed enough).

However I have been really interested in prehistory since I was a little kid and could just barely read. I mostly know about the Mesozoic era (aka the dinosaur era, 252 million years ago - 66 million years ago although true dinosaurs only showed up around 225 million years ago) and the Paleozoic era (541 million years ago till 252 million years ago). My main interests in these eras are animal life, the evolution of them, the climate and mass extinction events.

Recently I've also taken an interest in the ediacaran biota which predate the Paleozoic, but sadly not much is know about those life forms.

I'm also really interested in the universe and while I know more about it than your average joe, it's probably nothing compared to someone who has a degree in physics and astronomy.

Tsutarja June 10th, 2016 9:21 AM

So who's ready for our first Science AMA coming up hopefully within the next day or so? :)

killer-curry June 11th, 2016 7:01 PM

Just my curious, should maths also included as Science?

KetsuekiR June 11th, 2016 10:05 PM

I think so, absolutely. There's nowhere else on the forums where mathematics would be more welcome than in the Lab. xD

Brolaire June 16th, 2016 9:49 PM

It's pretty much sunny here 95% of the time haha.

Tsutarja June 17th, 2016 8:05 AM

It was sticky humid this past week here. I was walking to my car Wednesday afternoon and being outside I felt my breath being a little shorter than it usually is.

Kostas June 17th, 2016 10:57 AM

Sunny all the day.
The last time it rained it was about 1,5 or 2 months. That's one of the best things here in Greece.
But... too hot.
Today the temperature was about 36-37 Celsius. (or 96.8-98.6 Fahrenheit)

That seems like a similar climate to what we have here in Florida. Does it ever snow up there in the winter, though?

Yeah, well it depends, if you live at the height of the sea, no it will not snow.
But in many places there is snow and a lot of snow actually in the winter. Especially Kastoria,Florina where there is so so cold there. even -10 celsius (14 Fahrenheit).
But, I think the climate here is similiar to the climate in Florida.

Caite-chan June 17th, 2016 2:42 PM

I know its suppose to be hot and humid here in Michigan this weekend. Good thing I won't be at work because it's get crazy hot at work.

Not on topic about the weather stuff, but on the scientific part, a new Ichthyosaur species has been described. The Wahlisaurus massarae. It lived in the early Jurassic, about 200 million years ago when the ichthyosaurs were really successful.

Surprisingly, the fossil has been found 60 years ago in England, yet it hasn't been fully examined and described until recently.

If anyone's interested, here's a link to the article.

killer-curry June 21st, 2016 5:52 PM

meanwhile, in tropical countries. Hot and wet all day, but today it's raining.

Hyzenthlay June 22nd, 2016 7:00 PM

It's been raining all month over here and is quite chilly. No surprise, seeing as it's winter! However, looks like we might finally get a spot of sunshine today!

Also, I've been wondering - why is there no thread about time warps in a science forum? :0 I'm not very scientifically-minded but I'd love to read everyone else's thoughts and ideas on the subject!

Meganium June 24th, 2016 6:45 PM

can we seriously talk about weather in this thread? Or is this something Zach is pulling our legs? lmao

Humid with a random thunderstorm or two. It has been like this every day this week here in Houston.

TF, I'd love to see more programming stuff. I've seen lack thereof since this section was born, so if you and Zach were to bring something like that back, I'd totally enjoy it.

I just want to talk about weather and not get BS over it. lmao

bruuuuuh, I lived through that weather throughout my teenage and early 20 years. I know what that type of heat is like over there. It's unbearable.

Texas heat is freaking insane though. You can't even breathe in it. It's 90 degrees but with the stupid humidity it feels like 110 and it's omfg awful.

moon June 26th, 2016 4:50 AM

an official WEATHER CHAT finally yes

It's been unusually humid in Sweden as of late. >80%RH at ~27 degrees Celsius. I'm really not used to that, I prefer my air dry haha.

EC June 26th, 2016 7:44 AM

Three 90 degree days in a row starting today. Might even be too hot to go poolside.

donavannj June 27th, 2016 6:28 AM

We lucked out and only got one 90 degree day this past warm spell, but it was the warmest day we've had since 2010 (it hit 96 on Saturday). And then severe storms rolled in for every area around me except for my town. The portion of the storms on track to hit my town just completely fizzled out 20 miles away.

killer-curry June 27th, 2016 6:59 AM

so, weather sucks these days. No rain it's hot and wet all day.

Tsutarja June 28th, 2016 6:27 AM

Alright y'all, I've fallen behind on Element of the Week already, but I promise a new one is coming up today! :)

I'm considering starting a new feature in TL called "Programmer's Mindset" where I discuss the ideas and principles of programming in a way that everyone, even those that don't program, can understand (Such as making analogies and comparisons to things that people can grasp). It'd be a semi-frequent feature, not weekly or monthly, but I would make some posts on it every month, and I'd be the basis for the introduction, and when people discuss them, I can answer questions or even use people's discussions as future topics. Who would be interested in reading/discussing such a thing?

A little late reply, but I definitely think this is something we could look forward to here!

Meganium July 2nd, 2016 8:38 AM

Can you afford an i7? A good motherboard? An SSD? Those are highly recommended. But I think it also depends on what your boss really wants in terms of specs. Those are the things I used last time when I was building/upgrading the bank computers when I was working there.

I guess what I'm trying to ask is, what is your budget?

Sounds nice! What was the i7 and mobo's exact model, by the way? That way I might be able to say what and how much RAM to get. (you'd be surprised how the latest platforms don't really like the cheapest RAM you can get, performance-wise)

Also, you should try to get the RAM in pairs. Kits of 2 should be more than good enough. Is your boss going to game on the system? Then a kit of 2 8GB (16GB) will work, otherwise opt for a kit of 2 4GB (8GB).

Video card?

Also, you probably should also get an aftermarket CPU cooler from the likes of Corsair, Cooler Master, or some other company you'd know. Even if you're not overclocking, the Intel stock cooler won't let your CPU perform at its best, especially during summers.

I don't have the link for the video card but it was middle of the road. He won't be gaming on it, just running some intensive programs that don't require the strongest video card. He picked out some 16gb RAM that should work fine. Just gotta wait for it to come in.

Wish you luck and everything's good! :) Planning to overclock the CPU?

No need for this build.

So basically just getting the i7-4790K for a higher guaranteed base and turbo speeds compared to the 4790, huh?

Exactly -- I didn't want to plan on overclocking, but have the option to do so at a later time if requested. I doubt he'll request it :P

Mmm.

A word of advice: you might want to get a cheap aftermarket tower CPU cooler like the Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO or a lower-end closed-loop liquid CPU cooler like the Corsair H60. Even if you're not overclocking, the piddly Intel stock cooler the CPU comes with won't be able to cool the CPU adequately enough to prevent turbo throttling at all times, especially during hot summers.

It'll also let you overclock once you want to.

I know - he didn't want to pick one up at this time, so I didn't. A/C should be able to keep up where he's using it at least.

I've been holding off too much on my little bio lesson series. I might do more later, but for now i'm just too busy.

So, I went to my campus Library and test the network. Superb.

Tsutarja July 11th, 2016 12:48 AM

I can't imagine a college or university without internet speeds over 100 Mb/s.

killer-curry July 11th, 2016 2:45 AM

There is.

Cersei Lannister July 11th, 2016 5:29 AM

I love my home internet. I'm at work so I can't post anything, but boy is it fast.

My last test was 101.87 mb/s down, 119.24 mb/s up. FiOS ??

Something about my current living location makes it really hard to find tech-related jobs, it seems.

Someday, I might do the same... I'm still working on mine. Good to hear, though.

That feeling when a campus library in Malaysia trumps high end internet at the American University I went to. My parents are hillbillies, so at best we have 4 Mbps download, barely 2 Mbps upload. For $60 per month.

America's internet speeds as a whole are proof that unregulated capitalism and private free-market enterprise is a tremendously terrible idea; private ISP oligarchies and monopolies abound that provide as terrible a service they want because they're often the only ones in the area. It's either expensive terrible service or you get no internet at all.

Where is everyone?! It's awfully quiet around here. :P

Oh, and I've now been moderator here for three years as of today. o.o
