Flash Drive that supports USB 3.0, eh? Things sure has advanced nowadays.

This reminds me in several years ago when one of the external hard drive that I bought happened to have USB 3.0 support, with different lights indicating the USB mode that it runs. Iirc, it's green for 2.0 and blue for 3.0.

In other news, I managed to get a Dualshock 3 controller to work within Windows and Steam.

What was holding you from just buying a new router years back? 802.11g is positively old at this point.

Mostly the fact that I was living with my parents until October and we didn't need a different wireless router. I was basically using that Linksys router for only 2 months.

Did it involve the Xbox 360 controller driver software?

Not sure. What I found was a program called ScpToolkit and it started working fine.

Huh. All I had to do (granted, I was working with some wired ones) was install the 360 software, and then it worked just fine.

All I did was google "install dualshock 3 to pc" and found this link right here: http://www.digitaltrends.com/computing/how-to-connect-a-ps3-controller-to-a-pc/

Does the Xbox 360 software work with the Dualshock 3 as well?

Ooh, so you got a new desktop now, Zach? That's nice :) Which OS did it run from?

Tsutarja January 8th, 2017 10:35 PM

Windows 10 Pro!

Starry Windy January 9th, 2017 12:19 AM

I see! I'm wondering if my next PC would have Windows 10 Pro though, considering I've tried the regular one at some point before, and I thought that it would run much better on my next PC if I managed to get one someday.

For most folks Windows 10 would be basically the same ;) But yeah, Windows 10 is pretty great especially if your hardware was made for it.

If you buy a PC in store, it likely won't include the Pro version, but the Home version at least.

Starry Windy January 11th, 2017 6:49 PM

Uh, I meant, I'm sure Windows 10 would run much better if I'm running on newer PCs, rather than running it on my laptop because I've tried that before. But then, one of the reasons I'm possibly thinking of getting Pro version is mainly for holding off automatic updates and all.

Hoo boy, I have no idea as well until you pointed it out, Zach. I'm wondering if there will be better alternatives to those who wanted to mod their Android phones, in place of Cyanogen. Speaking of which, I'm wondering if they're pointing out to Lineage OS as the continuation of Cyanogenmod?

Tsutarja January 22nd, 2017 8:20 PM

So for the past month, my iPhone had been cracked open up top because it fell to the ground from being in my hands while I got affected by a car accident. Well tonight, I managed to pull the shell open in half and get it snapped back into place! However, the inner lining had been cracked so that's the only apparent visible damage to the shell.

Also, I understand that this may sound hypocritical of me to say, but unless you are Apple-certified, I DO NOT recommend working on iPhones physically! They are fragile and if something goes wrong, the damage may not be covered under warranty.

Lucario January 30th, 2017 5:38 AM

I have a domain and a site but it's offline, I was running it from a raspberry pi and I think the SD card got corrupted.

Starry Windy February 8th, 2017 9:54 PM

I think I used to run several sites on the virtual server running through localhost in my old PC, even though it was more into testing stuffs like CMS or some MediaWiki stuffs.

Tsutarja February 9th, 2017 6:08 AM

It's definitely better to run a local-side copy of web applications before you publish them, that way you can do internal testing to make sure it runs fine and won't crash before publishing it server-side and making it public. :)

Funny enough, the access points that they give to consumers has DynDNS support built into them, which is basically entirely in contradiction of that clause.

So it's against their TOS to run a web server locally?!

Definitely. Does your ISP block use of traffic on Ports 80 and 25?

I ran my IRC server on my home server for a little over four years before switching it to a DigitalOcean droplet.

I had tried that in the past and it didn't work, but that was before I had my own domain as well. Hmm...

A part of me wants to buy a new 2-in-1 laptop/tablet and be done with it. Another part of me wants me to wait for a bit more just in case any new announcements happen.

The thing is, these 2-in-1s seem perfect as it is... I'm hard-pressed to see anything Kaby Lake could provide significantly better than what is already on Skylake CPUs.

It's nice to be able to want things... sometimes I think the 2-in-1 models need a refresh badly. It's like for some reason it's lagging.

Tsutarja February 20th, 2017 7:56 PM

Phew, after two hours of working on my site, I have my fingers crossed that I optimized the fuck out of it, and hope that it doesn't crash.

Is there task in particular you think you could accomplish with a 2-in-1 that you wouldn't be able to with a normal laptop?

Downsizing the amount of mobile things I have?

The first-generation Surface RT is slow as molasses when visiting many web sites now.

The gaming laptop I have, I rarely use it ever since I've gotten this desktop, and I don't really bring it out as much as I could due to its size and weight.

Since I'm no longer having graphics power as a priority, a 2-in-1 running a Core m3 or i5 seems like the best fit now. It'd be smaller and lighter than a "normal" laptop, and I also can get rid of my tablet which is rapidly becoming dead weight due to lack of performance. Moving from tablet guts to laptop guts should also make it a lot less likely to be obsoleted, given that people can still do fine with a decade-old system today.

In fact, if I could, I'd have already bought the Acer Switch Alpha 12. Think Surface Pro 3's everything, make it cheap, make it include the keyboard and stylus in the first place, and make it fan-less (despite running a 15W processor). I don't mind having a slightly less sharp (though still very high-resolution, given that it's still 2160x1440) display, or having 5 hours of battery life to 7, compared to the current-gen Surface Pro 4.

The thing is, neither Acer nor Microsoft have gotten around to refreshing their Surface (clones) with Kaby Lake CPUs yet. Would be nice if I got myself a few hundred extra hertz and video chip.

Any updates on if you want to upgrade or not?

I really need a new Android device. It seems my Nexus 7 is getting slow these days, and my Moto G barely has enough storage.

I think I probably won't really need updating in any form for the time being.

Perhaps one day I'll find an actual reason, but that day is not now.

Mark Kamill April 28th, 2017 11:11 AM

My Honor 7 Lite just updated today from EMUI 4.1.2 to 5.0. Holy hell, I have had everything from a Sony Ericsson to Sony, an LG and a Samsung, and I think this is the first time an android device has ran faster for me jumping up a generation in android versions on a previous year model, this is seriously impressive. Loving the pop up windows coming from the bottom, the rounded notification bubbles, and I also think the app drawer is pointless. The iOS style homescreen has grown on me, 4 simple folders and nothing else, its just so simple and minimalistic. Only thing annoying me is the recent app drawer, I want the carousel back, the stock cards are boring.

Raffy98 May 1st, 2017 10:06 AM

I own an LG G4 and at first LG didn't even want to bring Nougat to this device.
They changed their mind after a "riot" on the XDA forums and honestly I don't blame them, how can you not bring Nougat on a device that's just 2 years old and that goes pretty strong still to this day?

The problem is that now that LG has been forced to make this update I'm afraid that they will come up with something rushed and not well optimized, I hope not.

Hi Odin.
How's the weather m8

I'm stuck with a S6 for now and I'm trying to decide between the ZTE Axon 7 or Oneplus 3 / T depending on budget. Trying to get one that has good development support.

So for those that have web servers utilizing PHP and MySQL/MariaDB, I really recommend installing phpMyAdmin if y'all don't have it yet. It's a great and easy way to maintain databases and database tables on your server that way you don't have to go through all that command line shit.

So today, I'm starting a new challenge to see if I can go a week without using my iPhone. During this time, I'll be switched back to my Moto G. I've put LineageOS on it, rooted it, and cleaned it up a bit so hopefully it runs faster than when I last used it.

You can actually "open" up iPhones as well via jailbreaking, but I really don't want to do that since Apple does not officially support jailbroken devices. :P

They don't officially support them, that's true, but if you really need some support by Apple a quick restore in DFU mode via iTunes can do the trick (backup your data first obviously).
But yeah, Android is so much more customizable and open that I don't even need to root it to do what I need and that is so much better and I think I'll stay on this side for a long time. :)

Even if I didn't have a real purpose for rooting my device, I still have it rooted as a just-in-case.

Just watch out for the dreaded warranties, especially on devices that are under contract. However, since you mention a drawer of devices, I'll assume that doesn't apply here. :P

Exactly, I wouldn't be going at these otherwise, haha. I think the 'newest' one is a Samsung Galaxy S4 and the oldest is a Samsung Galaxy S+. Most of them used to belong to my parents, though, and the only one I acquired myself I got for switching cell networks... and it's the lamest android phone I've ever

(Seriously, I have several TVs in my room)

Anyways, after a week of getting a new wireless adapter for my desktop (dual band and AC support), in addition to using an extender for some damn good speeds, I still think I need to get a router to supplement my ISP's gateway. The speeds can grow unstable, and one simple obstacle and/or movement of the unit can cause those speeds to really dwindle.

It could be possible that the antennae for the WiFi card in your laptop just went bad from excessive motion, or any other factors. The antennae on an internal WiFi card (in laptops) are quite flimsy and need to be positioned very precisely to properly work.

Awh heck, that could very well be the case, then. It wasn't even great to begin with when I first got it, but it's now only a laptop that I use when at home, so I suppose I could switch over to an ethernet connection instead.

Yes, I was sure he could, in fact, I'm not questioning if he can or can't otherwise he wouldn't even attempt that. I was just curious about how it gets done since I'm afraid of tinkering with devices like that. {XD} I just expressed myself badly.

More often than not it involves ordering parts from the manufacturer (such as the screen), or taking stuff apart and re-seating it carefully.

Finally bit the bullet and bought myself a 2 TB WD Blue HDD, a Wacom Intuos drawing tablet, and a 650VA APC UPS.

Some of them are direly needed at this point... low storage, too many blackouts...

And I guess I don't need a tablet PC now when a drawing tablet probably will work fine for my purposes.

Sounds like a good round of purchases!

The UPS is really good as well, and I recommend using APC's PowerChute as well if you haven't already installed it.

UPSs are really useful, I'm glad I got one last summer.

Just be sure to maintain them properly and make sure it's warrantied as well!

Out of curiosity, what's her current setup now?

Tsutarja July 12th, 2017 1:04 PM

Today I got a new gaming keyboard! It's a Masione VMJ-05, and I got it on Amazon for $20, which is a sale price. So far, the keyboard seems nice, and I do like the seven colors you can cycle through on the backlight. However, I will say that some keys do appear darker than others.

It's not the best one, but it's something I could recommend as an affordable gaming keyboard.

Well, I'm about to hit max on my free iCloud storage allocation. At least they are cheaper for 50 GB/month than OneDrive (whom I already pay monthly for to have more cloud storage).

Cersei Lannister August 7th, 2017 6:32 PM

Meanwhile I just have a 4TB external hard drive... half full.

Raffy98 August 7th, 2017 11:05 PM

I got 117 GB on Google Drive, but only because when I bought my LG G4 it came bundled with 2 years of 100 GB of storage space, plus the 2 GB that were given last year if you completed the security check, and finally the usual 15 GB.
At home I have a 2 TB external drive which I mostly use to store family memories, programs, Steam backups, and some ISOs... I also connected it to the LAN so every computer connected to the network can access it.

Tsutarja August 8th, 2017 7:36 AM

So far, Google is the only of the major cloud services to offer 15 GB for free, afaik. Man, I remember back when Google Drive, OneDrive, and Dropbox all did that. xD

Cersei Lannister August 8th, 2017 7:46 AM

I still have a decent amount with one drive. Box used to offer 50gb and I still have it.

Raffy98 August 9th, 2017 12:47 PM

I used to use OneDrive a lot (at the time it was called SkyDrive)... good ol' days. :')

Mega gives you 50GB storage if you sign up for an account, though you have to deal with managing end to end encryption keys.

Tsutarja August 13th, 2017 4:28 PM

I'd really rather not use Mega, especially after what happened with the last operation owned by Kim Dotcom.

This makes organizing your password database with proper URLs and names more important. ;P

I haven't used it myself but pcloud is an alternative that offers 20GB of free storage.

Thing is I don't maintain a database, rather, I use Google's autocomplete and it works most of the time for my needs. However, I don't like making completely new passwords simply because if I do have to maintain a database of usernames/passes, I may not always be able to access that database, say, if I'm at school or something, or if it's super urgent and I don't have the time.

If you store your passwords via Google Chrome, you can actually access them from a new browser/anywhere as long as you know your Google password by default. :P

Yesterday I replaced the old HDD in my dad's laptop with a new Samsung SSD, it's like it's a new computer, god bless SSDs. (I'm now left with a spare 5400 RPM SATA II 500gb HDD, I don't know how I will use it yet lol, probably inside my desktop for even more storage).
The only thing left is to clean the little fan but with the complicated HP design, I will most likely have to take the whole thing apart.

I put an SSD (Samsung 850 EVO) in my laptop as well, and I couldn't be happier. It works out in the long run mainly because I rarely use my laptop these days, so storage size wasn't really that big of a deal for me.

Tsutarja September 8th, 2017 3:43 AM

Ahead of the storm, I charged all my devices overnight... or at least I thought it was all of them. -_- I woke up to see my Moto G didn't charge at all and now will have to wait for that to charge up.

Starry Windy September 8th, 2017 5:00 AM

I think it's best to charge many devices early just in case of emergency like this, Zach. I guess I should remind myself to not delay the charging until it's quite too late, then. Because well, one of my phones seems to run out of juice much quicker once it drops to 15%.

Raffy98 September 8th, 2017 5:06 AM

I hope you also have some power banks, very handy in situations like this one.

Finally got a desktop computer. The screen is so big and beautiful. Now to transfer all my music over...

Did you buy it off the shelf or did you build it yourself?

Yeah, it's convenient when you need it. :)

I have a quick question that maybe you can help, and I don't think it deserves its own thread so... Here it goes ^-^ (and sorry for it being so dumb, I just don't know the English term for this).

What's the name of photos taken via satellite? Basically I want to search for more images like the wallpapers included in Nexus photos:

https://wallpapersafari.com/w/8rSRnK/
http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-5ZG0qvdT9AU/Vg6lfn-uy4I/AAAAAAAAF2E/_wJPvl61_WU/s1600/Nexus_5X.jpg
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/DKaeclxaCfXbj0Qxuqrvg2XO_V30OVclDJ0cIrah0fdPAHWsxs_0f7mtJ9Qsh_qP4Q=h900

I'm sucking at explaining myself here but I want photos taken FROM satellites. I have tried searching for "satellite images", "satellite imagery" and other similar terms and all I see are photos of actual satellites and antenna dishes, which is not what I want.

I was able to get some results with "drone photography", but Satellite photography has bigger "range" if that makes any sense.

Thank you anyone who can help ^-^
