They're just called aerials.

TY October 4th, 2017 9:43 PM

I love to build PC's nowadays. In the past I bought them pre-built cause I didn't felt like building something to only break one thing, now I built my own PC and soon I'm allowed to build (and quite possibly break) my sister's PC when she has all the parts needed.

All of that started cause I got a new graphics card cause my old PC was a bit outdated.

Sawsbuck October 6th, 2017 6:57 AM

My computer is a slow piece of crap with an AMD ATI Radeon 5700 that sucks

TY October 6th, 2017 7:14 AM

My PC has a i7-7700K in it along with a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070, 16 GB RAM DDR4 from Corsair, an ASUS motherboard and for once in my lifetime not a stock cooler xD

and a case which lost its purple and blue lights :(

Guess my IT course helped out a lot on my confidence to build a PC :P

That's pretty sick tbh. I want to eventually have a dualboot in my PC but I can't come up with a reason to have Linux atm since all I do rn is play games. GLHF with it! :D

Raffy98 October 6th, 2017 12:15 PM

That looks promising.

I built mine back in 2014, it has an i5-4570, a Radeon R9 270X, 8GB of RAM, an MSI Z87-G41, 2 1TB HDDs and a 120Gb Samsung 840 EVO SSD.
It also featured an AIO cooler (it was a Cooler Master Seidon 120v) but its pump died so now I'm back at using the stock cooler. :( rip.

TY October 10th, 2017 5:30 AM

I know the stock cooler struggle... I had mine for a long time untill my grand idea to rebuild my PC... I was the laughing stock at my school's LAN party cause of it (it looked ridiculous).

Can I get some help? How do I troubleshoot a keyboard issue? Sometimes the letters don't appear on the screen, no matter how many times I hit the key. It takes repetitive POUNDING to get them on. It's a new wireless keyboard. Is it a keyboard issue, a wireless issue, or something else?

In the middle of typing. Letters that I am sure I am hitting don't appear. I even look down at the keyboard to make sure I am hitting the letters and nothing happens. Haven't tried using it on anything else yet.

If it works fine on another device then that's a driver issue, but if it also doesn't work properly on another device then you received a defective keyboard which you shall return if you can.

The whole computer is borked now, USB ports not working, programs not loading, etc. Sending it back for a refund.

My laptop (which I am currently using) is faster than the new computer. I don't understand how that's possible.

What kind of computer is it? Seems odd that you're experiencing those issues with a new tower.

Also, have you had any power surges recently?

It's not a new tower. It was an all-in-one. I sadly don't have room for a tower.

Well, it seems that no matter which distro of Linux I try, I cannot get it to work properly on my computer. The dual monitor setup in Linux is terrible, I can't get a proper network connection over wifi, and it does not play nice with UEFI at all.

Yep.

The problem is that my primary monitor is on my right, and not left. When I change it in settings, the cursor works but all the windows and bar at the top go all wonky.

Say, what's the latest and greatest in the smartphone market?

I've been rather satisfied with my phone so I have been paying 0 attention to devices for the last few years (year? Idk how long it's been...) but am looking into upgrading sometime in the near future.

From my quick research, the LG v30 and Note 8 seem to be some of the best available right now, but what are you people'ses thoughts on them, or others?

Arsenic October 15th, 2017 4:47 AM

Luckily I'm not too worried about price, as I'm hitched on a govt plan so I get good dealz.

Not too interested in the iPhone either.

Haven't heard of the other two phones so I'm going to look them up!

The fingerprint scanner is really cool! Wish I had that on my phone to be honest. :(

Also I discovered that I was due an upgrade of my internet fiber, so I requested an upgrade from 50 to 100 mbps for free! It should arrive tomorrow. yay

colours October 16th, 2017 11:58 AM

i feel like such a pleb having only 50 Mbps.

I mean, that's all I really need anyway; I don't do any heavy gaming or anything of that nature, so going any higher seems rather unnecessary.

Don't worry, I survived for years with 1 to 4 mbps at best and I'm still alive lol. If you consider that at the beginning of this year I could access the internet with a radio antenna and with only 4 mbps in download and 256 kbps in upload, that's a big change for good.

EC October 16th, 2017 12:39 PM

Just last year I was upgraded to 60MB p/s. Makes downloading games on the XBOX One a breeze.

colours October 16th, 2017 12:41 PM

I think once I get a PS4 and a Switch I might upgrade to faster internet speeds, but I think even then 50 Mbps would suffice for the most part.

TY October 16th, 2017 1:02 PM

Raffy98 October 16th, 2017 11:14 PM

Nah, building a PC is pretty simple and as long as you carefully handle the components while installing them everything should go fine.
As for the thermal paste I recommend you the rice method, apply a small dot in the middle of the heat spreader of the CPU and when placing the heatsink on top it's gonna spread evenly as shown in this image:

Arsenic October 17th, 2017 12:19 PM

I agree with Raff, it's actually pretty simple... I mean most stuff only fits in one spot anyways.

Though unlike the Raff-meister I was always taught to apply a thin but even layer of paste over the whole top. Then again that might just be the Military way as my teacher operated systems in the field during Desert Storm so idk. It's worked well enough for me!

Tsutarja October 17th, 2017 7:24 PM

I recommend at least a pea-sized dot in the exact center with thermal paste, as when you lie the cooler on top of the CPU, it will spread evenly and not make a mess at all.

Here's an example on how NOT to apply thermal paste:

string555 October 17th, 2017 7:59 PM

I've had a windows 10 box for a little while now, it's just a slim laptop. I noticed it right from the start going slow, and one day I got curious why. So I looked at the C drive's information, it's little 29 gb were almost full. So I uninstalled a bunch of crap, but mind you, I had only used it a handful of times. I got it down to about 24gb, but I still don't understand how it can be so full when I've barely done anything with it.

wtf is clogging that muk? :X

TY October 17th, 2017 9:35 PM

Yea the only issue I would face is the thermalpaste, the rest is doable for me. Thanks for the help! :D

75% packet loss. That's the reason. ;)

Tsutarja October 22nd, 2017 5:36 PM

Huge packet loss is a nice indicator that something is wrong with your ISP's connection somewhere, more-so if it's happening over a wired connection, and if it's happening between you and multiple sites and/or servers.

Tsutarja October 28th, 2017 5:28 PM

LPT: Turn on your phone's battery saver mode when you are outside all day, or away from home for a very long time. It definitely came in handy when I was at Disney World today.

Raffy98 October 29th, 2017 3:56 AM

I set it to turn on automatically when my phone reaches 15% and it doesn't make a difference, it still discharges at the same rate: guess that my phone battery is almost dead. :D
I'll probably be buying another one until I completely replace this phone since LG announced that it will stop providing security updates for my G4... I have a feeling that my next smartphone is not gonna be from LG.

Also, I hope you had fun at Disney World. :)

alisaie October 29th, 2017 9:49 AM

Disney ? I have a year disney pass so I've been going to disney as often as I can. In fact I'll be going tomorrow even though I work tuesday because sis and I made plans and we refuse to give those up because 'you have to work halloween'. That and because our disney passes are almost up for the year and we're considering Universal for next year to save a little bit of money. Maybe.

ahem anyways my phone needs a new screen protector but that's all. though i ought to turn off bluetooth when i'm away from my car oops.

Hi, posting here to say that I'm saving up for my Pixel phone. Just the regular one, not the Pixel 2. I'm afraid that's a bit too pricey for me to justify, for now.

Although... 32 GB won't cut it as far as storage goes. :c If I'm getting a 128 GB Pixel, I might as well go with the regular Pixel 2 at this rate, since I think both are around a similar price? From the best of my knowledge, anyway.

My poor Nexus 6P has a cracked screen and the 3.5mm headphone jack doesn't work anymore, so I think it's about that time to get a new phone.

I was thinking of it then, but after seeing that it kinda turned me away from it, even though I wasn't wanting it anyway as the S8 is nearly identical in almost every way, albeit being expandable with storage whereas the Pixel isn't.

I'm really not a fan of using Samsung phones; unless they've changed recently, they used to put a fuckton of bloatware on their phones and from what I hear, TouchWiz UI is garbage. The biggest reason I go with Google phones these days is because I'm a huge fan of how smooth pure Android is rather than the the weird versions of Android Samsung and other manufacturers use, y'know?

Not only that, I'd much rather get my security updates on time, rather than waiting a few months for them on any non-Google device. That's why I'm having a hard time deciding whether I should just go for the regular Pixel or go for the Pixel 2.

I have to say, it was a thing back in the day but I think this has changed. One of my friends has a Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge and it is pretty smooth with Samsung's Touch Wiz UI, mostly not because the UI itself has been optimized in the meantime but rather due to beefier and beefier hardware inside the devices. lol
In fact, I am considering phones like the Samsung Galaxy S8, the Huawei Mate 10 Pro or the new Razer Phone.

I do agree with you on the fact that pure Android will always be smoother though.

Tsutarja November 16th, 2017 6:05 AM

Samsung phones have excellent hardware. It’s just the software (TouchWiz) that is complete shit.

Dter ic November 18th, 2017 9:03 AM

Touchwiz on the S8 is much better compared to previous versions. The UI is nice and functions similarly to the Pixel launcher. (swipe up reveal apps) The useless Bixby button on the side of the phone and Bixby in general are the main complaint of the S8.

Of course, Pixel phones have a much better history of getting security updates so I'm confident in saying that the Pixel will receive patches at least until next year. After that, there's the option of custom ROMs.

I had discovered the installed program on the computer's administrative account, and sadly the account info was posted on a sheet of paper in the front, which I have since removed from the board. Students are supposed to log in with their account credentials.

My boss said not to worry so much about it. However, it was just full of other bloatware as well such as some obscure antimalware program and Avast! on top of the college's antivirus program (repackaged Security Essentials).

The computers are going to be reimaged at the end of the year anyways.

Some people used to install stuff on the PCs of my old university, as well. Used to play Minecraft, Skyrim, Terraria and what not. Well, at least they were smart enough to reset the computers afterwards so that nobody noticed that they knew the admin password. {XD}

Well, I guess we as lab techs are a bit guilty here, because we installed Steam onto our computers in the front. And some computers in the lab have League of Legends installed on them (not because we wanted it, but rather students who wanted it).

Well an update on my sound card: the popping hasn't seemed to happened in quite a few weeks. It involved me pretty much doing two or three clean installs of the drivers from the motherboard manufacturer (Asus), as well as maybe one from Realtek themselves.

I heard sound cards are rather... redundant... now-a-days. What are the opinions here?

I'm curious..what makes you think they're redundant?

A lot of newer Mobos are coming with pretty decent audio suites. A bunch of headphones as well.

I have a soundblaster pro that I... Liberated... From a family members storage room. Even with all that fun to get it, it was nothing more than a fancy red light in my PC because it didn't have a USB port for my headphones (I wish I didn't get USB headphones) and because the headphones had their own built in audio suite anyways. Sadly I can't fit the SB anymore because my new graphics card is too big and my lowest Pcie is dead. Rip. Case is a lot darker.

The new Mobo I plan to get advertises an amazing sound system as well, built right in.

Guess I missed the cue that you were talking about soundcards in general, oops. Still thought you were talking about mine, which is actually built into the mobo. :)

And in other news, my grandmother moved recently and instead of opting for FiOS through Frontier Communications, she wanted to get DSL service, which is what she had at her old house for many years. She wanted copper phone service too because she didn't want her phone to go out during a power outage, which is understandable enough, except her speeds are going to be slow as fuck since she's moving further away from the central office.

Welp, my phone apparently continued to discharge overnight despite it being plugged in.

Raffy98 January 20th, 2018 7:09 AM

Are you sure your adapter/cable isn't damaged? I was having a problem where my phone was taking an unusually long amount of time to recharge and it turned out that the cable was opposing a lot of resistance, replaced it and everything went back to normal.

I did find what appears to be a crack going up the middle of the plug on one side, but so far it seems minuscule since it doesn't move when I pinch it. However, I do know it's a crack because I can feel it by running my fingers across it.

Thankfully my phone hasn't done this the past two nights, and I know which side to plug the device in with the Lightning connector now.

Sounds like a dying cable to me but Idk

You're probably right on that.

I have no idea why Microsoft has made accessing safe mode in Windows 10 so difficult, I have a virtual machine in VMWare which is having some problems with its display adapter (most likely the wrong version of VMWare tools is installed) and as soon as it boots the screen goes black and I can't see what I'm doing.
F8 doesn't work and neither Shift + F8 does because it boots too fast, so what I did was pressing Ctrl + Alt +Del at every boot sequence until it thinks it can't boot and it starts the automatic PC repair... such a pain.
I miss the good old days when pressing F8 was enough...

Tsutarja January 26th, 2018 5:57 PM

Welp, I was doing a firmware update on a router today and the firmware from the manufacturer bricked the fucking thing.

PSA: Don't buy Belkin. Ever.

Yeah it's pretty goofy that you have to boot into windows and go to Safe Mode from an option in the settings. I mean I can understand wanting to get rid of the button mash, but doing so by removing the option altogether doesn't seem like a solution at all...

Exactly, if you can't boot into Windows and you want to try safe mode you need to have a repair disc or you try that, which is not the best solution though. I really don't understand this choice.
