Battle Royal

No-one posted a thread for this yet...

Anyways, we got this new battle mode in Sun & Moon known as Battle Royal. The battles take place in an arena with four colored corners where four trainers battle out each other with teams of three Pokemon, taking them out until the battle ends after one trainer loses all their Pokemon.

What do you guys think of this? Are you hoping to see how it'll change up competitive play?

smocks June 14th, 2016 9:34 AM

I'm actually pretty happy that we got a FFA battle-mode, it'll be pretty fun w/ friends ^^
Only problem I have with it is that the first person to lose their Pokémon, the battle ends. I can understand why that is so, so it doesn't drag on, but it's kinda lame as well :/

it will hit everyone and everyone hate u

I'm likely guessing it could hit the other three Pokemon at once, since in a double and triple battle it hits everyone adjacent to the user.

I LOVE the concept of this. I have always wanted a battle style like this.

I really hope they use it some time in the storyline. Having leaders of a evil team or two, the hero and some other random person would just be amazing.

Iceshadow3317 June 14th, 2016 11:34 AM

I think it still is in a way.

They said they were only going to do 1 pokemon so that they don't use a lot of their time. But it was said that each player chooses 3. The battle ends once one trainer loses all 3 pokemon Unless 3 trainers decide to tag team one trainer, the pokemon battle will be fairly long. Especially if it is a true FFA where everyone is attacking someone different.

They say it is an online mode which is disappointing. But maybe they can still get one or two into the game.

Oh man do I love the idea of a battle royale featured as a plot point! Could you imagine the awesome tension within a major battle scene during a battle royale? Having a battle like that would imply that all the fighters in the battle are all trying to stop one another and whoever falls first would lose which would push the story line towards three different possible outcomes based on which person loses first. How would that work with ally NPC's? Would this imply that you could be fighting three different bad guys at the same time all trying to stop one another, and the first one who loses falls out of the evil scheme, while the ones standing get away with continuing their preferred evil scheme?
I'm probably going way out on a limb with these ideas, but a plot based royale battle, wow the possibilities for deep story development are practically built right into the rules of the battle itself.

Because I do not battle online much and would love it to be used in the storyline or just for training.

FFA cannot be used in storyline most often.

I'm not into the competitive scene at all, but might moves that require a charging turn (solar beam, razor wind, etc) be a little more viable in Battle Royal than they are in standard vs battles?

EC June 14th, 2016 12:16 PM

I still like the way TheKingNappy does FFA videos. 2v2, but it's truly a free for all. Attack anyone.

Probably not, since you have three opponents up against you and they can easily gang up on you.

I love this modes ideal! looks to be a lot of fun, and I can't wait to try it!

So it's 4 trainers battling at once, free-for-all? Do I have this right?

Yes. Once one trainer loses all of his/her pokemon, the battle end and the winner is calculated by the amount of pokemon they have left and how many knock outs they had at the hands of their pokemon.

Why does the battle end once the first trainer is knocked out? If it's a 4-way free-for-all would it not make more sense for the winner to be the last man standing? What am I missing?

Mawa June 14th, 2016 5:06 PM

This new Battle mechanic is pretty nice, I agree, but I am not too excited about that. I don't think I'll like it very much. I am afraid to see some people getting 2vs1 or something like that (if they know each other in real life or wathever).

Adam Levine June 14th, 2016 6:30 PM

Battle Royale is awesome. We can finally play FFA-style battles, something I've (kinda) longed to see in Pokémon, especially because the fights might end in disasters. The other battle modes from Gens V and VI weren't exactly that great (especially Horde Battles).

(BTW I wonder if Smogon can make this happen too)

Just how the battles work. It seemed to be early in Dev, so it may change a little. But it is probably so the loser see who wins, so they don't have to wait and so the battle doesn't drag on for a long time.

Yeah that could be a problem, but it is unlikely that you will be fighting someone in a free for all that you know. I would say the matches are totally random, so you aren't gonna be able to team up like that.

Poké Bean June 14th, 2016 10:50 PM

It's awesome that they're still coming up with new ways to battle, I didn't know this was something I wanted, but I do! I hope it does feature a little in the story, or at least in a specific facility like Inverse Battles or if there is a Battle Resort type area post-game. If you can choose who the other players are online it will be great for PC events!

User Anon 1848 June 14th, 2016 11:02 PM

It's a very fun idea. I just wish the battle didn't end as soon as one trainer lost their Pokemon. There should be an option to play till there's one trainer left standing.

illumine June 15th, 2016 12:02 AM

It's unlikely to lead to that much tactics-wise, but it's there now. This kind of format might work in other games or 'sports' slightly better than Pokémon, because there it just involves doing the same thing and trying to remain secure amidst many other opponents, rather than having to focus on all of these. The luck factor might be a bit high, and hopefully these kinds of things don't become too common in the main plot as yet - and plot-wise battles where one trainer has to go down might be strange -, as they might require a different approach to things which shouldn't yet be the norm. Not that much of a stretch given horde encounters, etc., though.

Rivvon June 15th, 2016 3:19 AM

Nice to see this finally be a real feature in-game, but as others have said I'm not sure how well it will work in practice. I get why they have to end it when one person loses all their Pokémon; no one wants to stay just watching others play while you can't do anything (think of why Monopoly is usually kind of tough to sit through once you go bankrupt). But at the same time, these kinds of battles are more exciting when you can see them through to the end, to see who makes it out on top against 3 others, not against 1 other. I can imagine a lot of these battles will end too early because one person's team inadvertently got bodied, which may lead to the battle style not seeing a whole lot of use.
