â—¦ Art & Design Daily Chit Chat â—¦

Welcome to the Daily Chit Chat!

The other was was a bit dated, so here's a new one!
In this area we can talk about.

â—¦ Discuss other artist and their work! Your inspirations, your work ethic, how are you feeling about your art right now?

â—¦ In-progress work. Art school is where you need to go for in-depth critique, but if you just want some quick thoughts about something.

â—¦ Small requests can be made here! If you want something specific, just make an individual thread for it.

Have fun!

Anastasia.R July 30th, 2016 2:48 AM

D'aw, I like the new name!

Oh, I guess for a discussion thing; is there anyone (on pc or outside) that has become a new inspo for your work recently?

I'm really linking the artist Flaptraps/Richard Anderson just for the cool strokes, textures, and shapes. I wanna practice that more, aha. But yeah, anyone or an art style really sparked your interest?

Haha, I mean it's probably obvious to tell because it's the artist of my signature, but Louie Zong was a recentish find. I really like his work because it's very different than the normal "style" I see I guess. I first saw his game grumps animated work, but it's more recent that I've kept up with him as an artist. He does lots of really cute mini gifs that I love. It's sort of a cross-roads of animation with an illustrative style and I really enjoy them.

Small Announcement!

The Weekly Pixel Art Challenge is back! I started it a little early, so you'll have until the Monday after next to get it finished. : >

I moved this thread over to the DCC as it's not really enough group discussion for a thread and you haven't made art for a gallery.

I'm lacking motivation to do any tags or try anything lately. Time has become something I don't know how to use :(

How do you guys muster up some long-needed motivation to really get back into the swing of things after a long down period?

I know it sucks, but if you just sit down and start, usually I can get to it. Like I'll have all the things ready, have the program open, and just sit there for hours waiting for myself to start. But as soon as I force myself to start moving things around, even if it looks bad or I work on something different to get started, I start going and going.

Make sure if you keep old thumbnails or written ideas, to go through all of those again. If you don't keep those, you should! There's nothing like coming back to an idea you've already got some traction on.

Bless this new DCC <33

Lately I've been attempting to reconcile my love of monster hunter and drawing hot babes and questioning whether or not that makes me furry trash. It's very disconcerning imo.

Well it only makes you furry trash if these hot babes aren't human and are humanoid animals instead XD

Fairy August 11th, 2016 2:47 PM

It's less "humanoid animals" and more "dragons with boobs".

Found and touched up a couple of old sprites, along with my new-ish Mega Rayquaza. Tail on MRay looks a bit shit, so I might fix that.

Kind of sad people were calling them bad on imgur, but reddit was a lot more kind to me. Oh well!

Fairy August 12th, 2016 8:43 AM

I don't see why people would be talking bad about those sprites, they look pretty good to me. Yes, there's stuff you can do to clean them up and improve them, but I think they're pretty successful attempts! You've got a few transition colors you don't need in those sprites and the colors are a little under-saturated, but that's really not the end of the world. They're pretty cool!

Gigadweeb August 13th, 2016 6:20 PM

Aye, thank you! Decided to fuck around with them a bit, and I have to say I'm a lot happier with them.

Ohhh, loving the revamps. I'd say the devamps are pretty good too, but I love the colors and shading of revamps. I'm a bit bias aha but lemme hop to a bit of critiquing!
I think most of your revamps were actually well done! I think you were able to really give an extra "oomf" with the shading you've done. The only few I'm iffy on is Houndoom. Where the neck is connecting to the body; the shading makes it look very flat compared to the rest of the body. Also, beyond the shading, I think the snout was edited? It's a little too sharp and skinny to be a canine's snout. Otherwise, I like most of them!

Now to the devamps. Off the bat; Jirachi I think could've been done differently to be more successful like your Groudon. Groudon for sure is the strongest piece out of the bunch! With the palette and the amount of dithering shading with the black you did, it's readable and well made. Jirachi is readable! Don't get me wrong, but I think the amount of black is a bit harsh especially with the dithering shading on the arm and a bit of the head piece. I think with more white lighting on the head piece, you could play around with shading and building form with the yellow color. The blue I think would be awesome for shading the body because the body is alright a light value. The blue would be less harsh and give the blue more purpose!

Rayquaza is pretty well done! I'd say the only thing is the tail that's more behind Rayquaza should probably be shaded more in black to show depth. Also I think you would be able to read the arm more clearly. Other than that, I gotta say Kyogre, Deoxys, and Groudon look really awesome!

I hope it helps - I think you're doing fantastic work, yo! I liked your previous post with the Mega Rayquaza and Primal Groundon and Kyogre! Keep at it! c:

Cheers for the critique! Yeah, Houndoom's snout looks more like a duck's bill, but the proper sprite's one looked like a blob. Gonna mess around with that a fair bit.

Yeah, bit too much black on the Jirachi, it's just that without it it feels really flat. Gonna try and find a better balance with it.

But once again, thank you very much!

Whoa it's been awhile since a post, huh? Well, I guess I'l ask a question then!

To hobby artists, to students, to people wanting to learn art: how do you feel about receiving criticism? Have you receive good feedback, do you care at all for it honestly, and how do you feel receiving feedback (good or bad). I like constructive criticism, and I like giving it out to people who want to improve. I sometimes get anxious when I have critiques in class, but I guess it's because I can see people's expressions before they talk about a piece.

killer-curry September 18th, 2016 6:05 PM

Welp, i would be happy to accept critics that is meaningful, and also does not have harsh critics too.

This is what I want to stress on sooooo much when listening or reading feedback. AND I definitely think we should stress this on here too. Help people, don't discourage.
Both scenarios I think are good, I relate to them as well. I like asking both someone who understands art process how my work looks to them and I ask someone with little art background. Just to see if I got my message across or if someone says "Something looks off.." and then I can look at it myself and figure out what's wrong. It's fun to ask my friend, who is a graphic arts major, how my piece look when I'm usually surrounded by illustrators who care a lot about technique. Because he was taught more about communication and ideas, he can tell me if something looks really nice but the concept is boring. It's nice to have different perspectives, I guess is what I'm going for, aha!

Reunilu September 18th, 2016 6:45 PM

I think I mentioned this once in another thread in A&D (or maybe it was for something similar, but I'm remembering it wrong), but I'm no good with receiving criticism. It's very rare that I'll ask for critique, mostly out of anxiety. In fact, I don't remember if I ever have asked for critique in the three and a half years I've practiced any sort of art. Ironically, in most of the critiques I've done, I tend to be very harsh. It's a sign that I need to express what I'm thinking in words more, I think.

I think I know what you're talking about - and dontkillmeplease - but in the recent crit I think you did express some good points, but some things could have been explain a little further to help the artist figure out what to work on. Just, a little more suggestion, and there was just some things that didn't need to be said/said nicer. I think you have a good eye and experience, but you want to try and help the artist. Be clear and give some suggestions they can hopefully follow!
Also,ah, as you get to a point you're not satisfied with your work you might feel different about crits. Everyone feels anxious at some point about crits, but I'm sure it will get better for you!

Ah, figures. I have a bad habit of doing that trying to be so concise that my thoughts often get lost in other thoughts. But yeah, you're totally right, I've been told that by people I need to go more into detail by quite a number of people, not just critiquing.

As a general rule of thumb, if someone posts on your gallery, you return the favour.

Ah, that was the thread I was thinking about! Yeah it is sort of a problem. Definitely feeling it's a problem after that one request thread with the Hawlucha signature. Sometimes I feel it's sort of an issue with people not being so familiar with art mediums.

no passive aggressive nope not at all no sarcasm here either

Fairy September 18th, 2016 7:19 PM

There's other ways of addressing artists besides critiquing their work to! Users who are not as familiar with art can always express themselves through the whole "compliment sandwich" technique, without necessarily going in depth into how a flaw can be improved, but providing a new and unique interpretation of a perceived "negative", for lack of a better term. Even posts that aren't the height of artistic feedback are certainly welcome! :)

As for encouraging better posting etiquette, well, I think you know where I stand on that. But! I do think the place to begin is to lead by example and hope others follow suit.

Fairy September 18th, 2016 7:36 PM

Exactly! As artists sharing our art on a forum not dedicated to the subject, we should be mindful not to expect critiques that are immaculate, but willing to offer critiques of that calibre to our more advanced level artists and anyone looking to improve. It can come down to so many factors why one would not do an in-depth critique, but you're right, I do think it says something to have options and recourses available for those who wish to learn better ways of expressing their opinions to other artists.

What do you guys think of putting together a small, "here's a way to critique (advanced/novice editions etc)" resource? To help new members or remind veterans the real benefits of a proper cirque.

Anastasia.R September 18th, 2016 7:47 PM

I'm glad y'all are interested! I definitely want to get the point across we want to help and encourage artists to improve or look at something in a different perspective. I want to make it so that anyone can learn how to analyze art a little more critically no matter what skill level. You can explain or get past the "I think something is wrong but I don't know what" sorta comments. I guess those are my goals atm! More encouragement overall when making posts and to encourage people to discuss and talk. C:

In the rules we have more of a "what not to post" than a real, substantial critiquing guide. But considering the efficiency of our resource makers I can promise it will be a lengthy enjoyable read.

But seriously if you guys wanna discuss this and move forward with it, just shoot me or Nina a draft. I trust y'all to get the right information together.

@Johnny damn right we sticky dat shit all day.

Nina September 19th, 2016 1:51 AM

My thought was not to have it as a stickied thread, but as a post inside the Rule & Guidelines thread. It's something that people should read when they enter the section and wouldn't have to worry about sticky clutter.

Aw yes, your lighting and values are improving! C:

The one small thing that might need some fixing is the piece of rock/land (?) in the middle. The curved line messes with the perspective of it. Your perspective of the cave walls and ceiling is great! I have to say - good job on the perspective and working on values! If I could suggest anything else, it just might be to go a little further in detail of the rocks. You have a good idea of lighting, you can look at caves and rocks and study the texture and lines to make it look like rocks! I think your outlines suggest it well, but you can make it more realistic with shading and lines. Rocks have different patterns sometimes, some have cracks on them with an indent, and so on! The shading is a little sharper in most rocks (smoother rocks and pebbles have softer looking shading) so you could have a ton of fun with that if you like geometric shapes!
http://i.imgur.com/s5MSgqd.png
Maybe your reference has more curved lines or shading - but either is good, have fun with it! But that extra time on making those rocks look real would be more engaging for viewers! c:

Mister2lua, your work is always great!

I wanted to post and ask a general question for everyone: is there a medium you want to learn more about? Watercolors? Digital painting?
I'm learn watercolors from a teacher for the first time and I work more opaque. It's rad, I just need a lot of patience while I'm working. xnx;

Nina November 13th, 2016 8:40 PM

In terms of visual arts, I guess I'd like to learn more painting skills/better lighting.
Not that though, I need to learn more about 3D again.

Skip Class November 13th, 2016 9:51 PM

Good Luck with watercolours and your new teacher Ana :D That sounds super exciting! And Nina you should totally do more 3Dness c:

Now that I have finally finished uni, right now I've been really hyped about getting back into Photography again and have been taking, editing and posting photos on instagram basically every day now.

The other thing I'm planning for this summer is to learn how to do Branding properly and start doing social media graphics again. YouTube community here is quite big and often people will look for others to make banners for their channels, twitters and whatnot - Might see if I can make some extra money off it commissioning if I can. I want to do YouTube things for myself as well, but learning branding go first (heck i'm doing rebranding for myself atm).

too many plans

Hi, I'm the artist! As for why it's a bit on the melty side, I'm not sure... I guess it just sort of is?

Hey, so I haven't been on PC in ages, and I'm really not sure where to make this thread, so...
I painted a thing for the first time since second grade, and I really, really enjoyed it. Where would I post a picture of it for some good, solid critique/advice and maybe some instruction on techniques that I should be learning and practicing as a brand-new beginner to painting? I read the rules but still wasn't sure, it sounded like the School of the Arts section was just for people teaching. Sorry to be a bother. >.<

You can either post it as a start to having a gallery and ask for feedback, or just post it here! You can also post it in art school under the "Help" tag if you want a dedicated critique thread. It's a little quiet in there, so I won't mind if you want to post it in the main section.

So I have been on this site for awhile now, and something that I have always wanted was a signature that made my profile more unique. Problem is, I really don't know how to make one, or where to go asking so figured my best bet may be starting here. Anyone have any suggestions or leads by chance?

Completely understandable if not, just been thinking about it more lately.

Anastasia.R April 11th, 2017 7:38 AM

I'm not really an artist, so I only rarely get into any type of drawing project. However as I've recently heard a lot about a piece of software called "Aseprite", I figured I might as well try it out.

Still need to figure out a couple things and find a good color palette.

But yeah, what tools are you using, if I may ask? :)

moon April 22nd, 2017 2:59 AM

I used to take pics of my cats and put here....... like once or twice :V I have 2037842902 cool catpics laying around that I could show I guess. More or less instagrammized ahah.

Why hello, it's been a while! I completed this a couple of weeks ago. It's got a good few flaws, but reddit seemed to enjoy it.

It's really ambitious! I love that lighting, it's usually always auto assume you have a light from the front, but having it mostly from the side/back is a really nice change and gives it a menacing atmosphere. I'd say work on the sword hand, it doesn't look like they're actually gripping it, just kinda like it's pasted on to the hand.

Thank you! I'd definitely agree. The reference used wasn't entirely HD enough to see how the hand fit the hilt, and I'm awful with hands/feet in the first place ahaha

Yo, hey I'd like to see how people feel about this suggestion:

Would anyone be interested in bringing back multiple art battles/weekly competitions? Also, would you like to see more medium focused contests (graphics art for a week or something or pixel art).
Would anyone be interested in a big art community project (or multiple if people would like to work in medium focused projects)

I just wanna see if anyone would be down and anyone wants to talk with me to try and host something.

killer-curry June 19th, 2017 7:29 PM

Im actually wanted to make another drawpile session again so we can go drawing together again, so I would think it might be a good idea to host a drawing together session with a theme tho.

Yeah, I'd be interested in art comps. It seems this forum has mostly devolved into just posting your random works in your showcase, which results in a more isolated feel.

I can feel that, yeah. I'm going to being back art battles. If there's a weekly/monthly competition anyone wants to host or suggest, I'd love to hear other people's thoughts!

Okay recommendations wanted!

I'm looking to commission someone to draw from a photograph of a decreased pet (dog) and then maybe get it framed. Which dA artists that you follow do you think would be able to do it? What would I be looking at in terms of cost/shipping/etc? I live in Australia. This is a present I would need by the 17th of December.

Unfortunately I don't know anyone specific who does pet portraits, even not related to dA.
though usually if they do animals/creatures well they can do pet portraits, how about hitting up ana ;)

Were you looking for like, a detailed traditional painting? If you just wanted less real paint focus, it might be easier for you to ask the artist for a high quality digital file, that you could then print and frame yourself (I can help with how to get that done), as I suspect the cost and shipping to be pretty high even within your country itself, as well as limit the available artists you could use. Some artists actually don't know anything about high quality printing specs, considering how many services and digital alternatives there are, and also the shipping involved, or even just not having the time to do so. About what size were you after?

Alternatively if you are looking for a traditional painting, you can check your local artist area. Pretty much every area has old time traditional painters, especially if you go to more rural areas. Though, seeing as you wanted to commission from dA, I'm guessing that's not what you're specifically after.

Edit: Depending on the print shops in your area, you can also get the traditional painting scanned and printed on textured/canvas like paper that can really bring out the work. While it would be a pretty penny depending on the size, it would probably still cost less than paying the artist printing/framing costs AND shipping costs. It depends on your budget I guess!

All good because funnily enough someone posted in a German Shepherd group I'm in literally a few hours after I made this post here and oh my God she's incredible. I've now ordered through her!

Hope this is okay to share: https://www.facebook.com/PetraArtOfficial/

Her dog/cat art is freaking amaaaazing. For anyone else coming here with the same question, deffo worth checking her out.

Fairy August 29th, 2017 5:11 AM

Ohohohohohoh!

Can we share amazing pictures of animals? I did not take any of these pictures myself, but while I was volunteering at an animal shelter it was my job to make the animals as "marketable" and "desirable" as possible via graphic design. Well, one of the women I worked with was an amateur photographer and her photos are AMAZING!

https://www.smugmug.com/gallery/n-hzhQ9k/

Her name is Collene and she really deserves more recognition for her work. I was absolutely taken aback when I saw such unexpected talent in such an unlikely place. :')

Inktober is a month were you try and do daily drawings! It was founded Jake Parker with the intention of using only ink for this month and these drawings. It has expanded to not really be so strict about the media used since not everyone has access to good inking tools or can easily get discouraged doing art everyday in a media they're not comfortable with. There are various prompt lists for the illustrations that some people follow, some people do whatever. In general, you end up with a flurry of fun and usually witchy and halloweeny art! (and a lot of artist who feel bad they didn't do it daily)

Sawsbuck October 13th, 2017 11:19 AM

Idk if this really counts as art lol

You need three examples for a showcase! If you just want us to look at this one work, I can merge it into the DCC for you.

With that merge out of the way...

I really like this actually. I know it's just an aspect of the program, but that cyan on the dark-but-still-blueish background is really satisfying, if it had a larger margin around it all. You simplified it well, while still putting in all the details that matter.

Thanks!
I can probably mess around with the margins and make them bigger

Been struggling to do anything artsy for a long time, but managed to churn out a little Shaymin for Inktober c:
