Make-a-Mega 5: Complete
Make-a-Mega We all know that there’s a lot of Pokemon that just plain suck competitively. However, the introduction of mega-evolution as a mechanic allowed many Pokemon that would otherwise be very weak to suddenly become very usable. In the case of some Pokemon (ie. Lucario or Mawile), their mega-evolutions give them such a boost that they jump from lower tiers into Ubers. So, for the Daily series Make-a-Mega, we’re going to take a Pokemon that is ordinarily quite weak and create a mega-evolution that will render it usable in a higher tier. In the last Make-a-Mega we turned Weezing from a weak Pokemon and ineffective wall into an anti-meta Sweeper that also has enough bulk to make it a lasting threat. Now it's time to again submit ideas for a Pokemon to create a Mega Evolution for. Once we have our chosen Pokemon, we'll develop its type, ability and stats here whilst over in A&D a design to match our changes is created. Week-by-week breakdown Week One: Pokemon is determined Week Two: A&D work begins, type change (if any) is determined. Week Three: Ability change (if any) is determined. Week Four: Stat changes are determined. Featured design is selected. Each week (excluding the artwork) is broken down into three days where ideas are suggested and then a four day poll to determine which idea we apply. The article is then written and published as the next polling process begins. Guidelines

I want a Mega evolution of Arcanine because Arcanine is my favorite Pokemon and I cry everytime that such a dope Pokemon as that doesn't have a Mega Evolution with each passing game ):
|
Can you link to Mega-Weezing's article?
Also, nominating Muk and Butterfree. |
Let's dig in the competitive trash can for a little bit. Nominating Chimecho.
|
Nominating Milotic (This would've been perfect for OR/AS tbh...)

Nominating Cacturne. Cacturne is evidently in dire straits, given that it dropped to PU in the most recent tier shift. A Mega Evolution could fix its dismal Speed while further augmenting one or both of its offensive stats. |
I nomimate for Kabutops/Omastar.
|
Since Generations 5 and 6 are lacking in Megas, with only 1 each, I've decided to put forward a Pokemon from each of these generations
I'm nominating Hydreigon for Gen 5 as it had some scrapped design elements that could be incorporated into a Mega Evolution. Slap on some cannons, give it Mega Launcher, and BOOM! (That last part is up to the community of course :P) For Gen 6, I will be nominating Pyroar as it has so much wasted potential for something with such a cool design; it would also be cool to see a mega with gender differences. |
Hmmm I can jump on board with Pyroar! I will also go for the Gen 5 nominations like Volcarona and nominate both Stoutland and Braviary. Two Pokemon that would benefit greatly from a little buff to a couple key stats.

CASTFORM PLEASE GUYS
Castform has an AMAZING movepool and could have a really good mega. Mega Castform would have 3 mega stones: Castite-Sun, Castite-Rain, and Castite-Snow. It would automatically summon weather upon evo! <333 |
I think Accelgor could do with a Mega.
|
I can only nominate my boy, Sun Wukong aka Infernape.
|
Id say spiritomb

So Many Options!
Gave my boy Stoutland a vote, i want to see it become a big 'ol woofer. It'll be in a class of its own! Seems I also wasn't the only one thinking Castform actually would be cool as a mega, commanding lead right now. |
Castform has won!
So, are we planning on changing its type? |
I honestly think Normal is what suits it best, I can't think of anything else that would work for it at this point
|
A slightly "out there" idea, but Castform could have normal/??? as its type. You can choose 4 weather moves for it, each one taking it to a different form. Rain dance would take it it Normal/Water, Hail would change it to Normal/Ice and so on.
Then once chosen it has to stay in that form for the battle, and each form would have its individual movesets, with the weather move being one slot filled. So as an example the Normal/Water version might have Rain Dance, Thunder, Scald and Weather Ball, whereas the Normal/Ice version could have Hail, Scald, Weather Ball and Blizzard. It's an odd one and there's a few bits not quite sorted, but I've been up all night. If someone likes the idea please build upon it. |

I personally feel that having 3 very different options is very hard to deal with if I were on the opposing team. Of course you can look at what kind of team it's on, but there's still no way of knowing until it Mega Evolves. I would vote for either Normal (which would need some really big buff to either ability, stats, or moves), or actually the Rock type. Sandstorm is the only (real) weather condition where Castform does not transform into that weather's type. Instead, Castform turns back into its Normal type form. It makes sense (in my head) for Mega Castform to be Rock type with this reasoning. |
I'm sticking with having it change types based on it's stone. Mega Charizard and Mega Mewtwo both have two stones so a much weaker Pokemon, like Castform, could easily get by with three. I think it would be easy to tell which stone Castform will be using based on the rest of the team.
Mega Castform-Sun @Castite Sun(Fire) Mega Castform-Rain @Castite Rain(Water) Mega Castform-Snow @Castite Snow(Ice) This will be a much more difficult/gimmicky Make a Mega but why not have more fun with it and try something like this? 8D |
How about
Mega Castform-Sand @Castite Sand in addition? ;) |

Oh til. I never knew Sandstorm influenced Weather Ball
|
Just so you guys know, I'll enter Castform's (lol) idea in as a single option so it doesn't get too confusing.
I'm also going to just throw in Normal/Ghost as an option, because why not? |
Give it a move that can have different typings and base it's Mega around that gimmick. Aka, make it a mon similar to Rayquaza, which doesn't need a Mega stone. Considering Castforms terrible stats, it's unlikely that it evolves into a second Mega Ray.
The move's type can be any of the same type of weather and depending on that, Castform's typing changes accordingly. |

Happy to see option 1 running away with the votes 8)

Alright, just to really screw with the A&D guys, there are a Fire, Water and Ice M-Castform depending on the type of stone used. So, what ability does each form get?
I think the obvious choice here is Drought/Drizzle/Hail. |
Since it's type used to be weather dependent, the only way to have it make any sense would to whip up a weather. So yup, totally agree with Pie here. (Hail ability is called Snow Warning btw. ;))
But just to throw in a second suggestion, what about Adaptability? |
Weather abilities would be nice. Or possibly Simple? Not really any good pokemon that can utilize it well right now and with Castform's various boosting abilities it could be fun counting in and strategizing with/against the different forms.
|
You know I feel kind of bad for throwing in a second suggestion but maybe we could go step further on the weather abilities and do
Desolate Land/Primordial Sea/An Ice version of Delta Stream (Ice Age maybe?) |

We could give it an ability that gives Weather Ball a little more strength, while also adding a weather effect to the move. Basically, in its Sun form, Weather Ball gets a boost in damage, while at the same time acting as if you'd just used Sunny Day.
|
Was thinking the 3 weather abilities myself! The rain one would be really fun with insta rain and Hurricane/Weather Ball/Ice Beam/Thunder 8D

Wait what if we made it so that it can hold an item? For example, it doesn't need a Mega-Stone to evolve, but uses Heat Rock, Damp Rock, and Icy Rock (I had to search this one up lol). This way, it can have Drought, Drizzle, and Snow Warning respectively, but each weather effect will last longer. In addition, it will automatically change forms when you switch it in. Is that too strong?
I feel like giving it Desolate Land, etc. is too strong and kind of takes away from the uniqueness of Primal Groudon, etc. Yes, it could be balanced out with stats, but I don't feel like it's a good design philosophy. I was also thinking of giving it some new gimmick weather ability, but wouldn't that be too much hassle? Like basically Forecast + (Some Weather thing), kinda weird (don't count this as a suggestion). |
I think it could be similar to Mega Rayquaza, ie. using the Fervent Wish with Dragon Ascent. I think as long as Castform has Weather Ball it should be able to evolve, this encourages the weather synergy aspect. I like really 5qwerty's point about being able to use the different weather rocks to extend the weather, but I also don't really see a problem with it being able to use Life Orb or Choice items as it has such abysmal stats.
Regarding the ability I agree with the Standard weather abilities. While adaptability is pretty cool, it would really deter from the weather theme and under Sun and Rain, fire and water moves are getting a 1.5 boost anyway, the only benefit would be if it got a second type. |
The poll is up!
|
Adaptability and Simple don't make much sense considering weather is Castform's gimmick. I prefer the regular weather abilities (option 1) as opposed to the Primal versions. Weather doesn't see much use in Gen 6, so this could give those playstyles some extra tools.
|
I voted for option 1. This is already a bit gimmicky so I think keeping some things as simple as possible would be great.
|
The weather abilities (of the normal variety) win! Now onto the all important stats. Feel free to do individual spreads for each M-Castform or to give them all the same. Up to you (and good luck).
|
hp: 70
attack: 50 defense: 75 special attack: 135 special defense: 75 speed: 115 |
As a mon that's got a much better special movepool than physical I think it doesn't need much attack at all. So let's move most of its attack to other stats so it can hold its own against other Megas a bit better.
HP: 70 Attack: 10 (-60) Defense: 85 (+15) Special Attack: 145 (+75) Special Defense: 95 (+25) Speed: 115 (+45) |
Spoiler:
Might edit it more later. Sun and hail take a more offensive approach due to their poor defensive typing. Swapped their defenses for flavor, like Fire being nonphysical and fragile and Ice being hard and durable. Rain is the bulkier version because Water is a more useful defensive typing. I was debating about making them all bulky, but I feel that the sun and hail Castforms would still have issues surviving and switching in. Too few resistances, vulnerable to hazards, no recovery, etc. |
The Spread I was thinking for all three forms was:
HP: 70 Atk: 50 (-20) Def: 85 (+15) SpAtk: 130 (+60) SpDef: 85 (+15) Speed: 100 (+30) I feel like this is the most basic spread it can probably get while still being balanced. Even though the weather abilities aren't as strong as they were in Gen 5, Castform's great coverage options and guaranteed Stab Weather Ball are enough to warrant caution. I think it makes sense for it to be more of a wall breaker so I haven't invested too much into defense. I do really like the idea of alternate stat spread, but I think that will really affect their viability, as Fire and Ice already are at a disadvantage in terms of defensive typings. If they're all using the same somewhat Glass-cannon spread, its more of a choice based on stab and which coverage options you would need to fill out your weather team. |
