Pokemon FireRed Minus (GBC demake)

Intro
Pokemon FireRed is fine in it's own right, but not the kind of remake I would have liked to see. I prefer "remasters" of games over remakes. The old sprites have a deep nostalgia factor with me and probably most others. The game doesn't quite satisfy the need I have to replay Kanto (which I do quite often). However the original games are plagued with all the well-known bugs and limitations that make them hard to come back to.

So I decided to make a solution. Pokemon FireRed Minus is a hack that blends all the features available in Gen 3 with the simple and beloved sprites of Gen 2.

Features
- MrDollSteak's FireRed ROMbase
- Pokemon Sprites from Crystal
- Original RBY maps remade with GSC sprites with about 99% accuracy
- OW sprites from gen 2 as well
- Battle background and UI elements from GSC
- "Emu Edition" so you don't miss out on any of your version exclusive bros
- Optional "Legacy" patch that removes Sevii Isle and alters things like giving Lemonade to the guards instead of the Tea

To-Do
Spoiler:
Maps - Mostly Done
Scripts - In-progress
Pokemon Sprites - In-progress
OWs - In-progress
UI - In-progress

Advanced Features I Want But Can't Add Myself
Spoiler:
Separate patches for RBY music, GSC music, and FR (devamped) music
Some way (ASM?) to make all the OWs moved up by 4 pixels
A way to choose which palette an OW uses (to mimic GSC's system)
New title screen
GSC battle animations

Maybe by the end of fall? If my current situation stays the same, it might come out even earlier but we'll see.

Having GBA Styled OWs, Battle GUI and water coexisting with the GBC tiles and Pokemon Sprites kinda ruins the immersion.
That aside, could be an interesting breath of fresh air, I'll be looking forward to it.

The screenshots are just a work in progress. I already have most of the GBC OWs done, but am waiting till I get all the mapping work out of the way. The water and Battle screen are also going to be edited but again, I like to take everything one step at a time.

Maybe? I don't know how exactly the multiplayer stuff works but I think it will be fine. Just keep in mind this uses MrDollSteak's ROMbase so it might act funny if you battle with the new moves. I would recommend using a save editor when it comes down to trading though.

Ah I should've looked at that more carefully, sorry. May I request that MrDollSteak's FireRed ROMbase be optional?

Glad to see you're continuing this, wish I had the ability to help but you're doing fine without me. All I want is for this game to exist in the purest GVC form possible and you're nailing it! :D

KrustyKong October 1st, 2016 1:55 PM

Thought I'd show off some more locations. I'm working in the order one would play the game and am currently on the SS Anne. A few issues have presented themselves such as the electric gate in Vermillion Gym and the SS Anne sprite itself, but I wanna stay focused on getting all the simple map stuff done before diving into that.

Will the OW sprites (player, all NPCs and Pokémon) be demade? I don't think the original FRLG sprites look compatible with the GBC-styled overworld environment.

Lunos October 14th, 2016 12:00 AM

^ Taking the original RBY Sprites from wherever part of the internet you want (Spriters-resource, for example) and putting them into the game should be a really easy thing to do.

yes they will. I've seemed to omitted that detail from the intro so that has been edited.

Sorry all, I've been a little sidetracked with a few other small projects these last couple of weeks, but I'll try to get back on this full force. Since the last post I've got the Celadon Condos done as well as a little of the Dept. Store. and Casino.

And what about the music? I'd like to hear some RBY songs or "8-bit" version of FRLG songs.
(Some FRLG songs' main tracks have additional parts than RBY ones, e.g, Route 3, Vermilion City and Cinnabar Island, so they still sound different when "demade" into 8-bit style)

There was somebody who managed to import the RBY music into FireRed so I was thinking of asking for their help when the project was done but it's not a priority. The FRLG demake songs sounds like a cool idea also, but again I alone dont have the ability to do something like that.

I'd say about 60% of the towns are completely done. Working in the direction one would play the game, I just finished Celadon and the Rocket Game Corner and am moving on to Lavender. I got discouraged because one of the houses being linked to one in Celadon so if anyone knows of a fix let me know.

CelticsPhan December 7th, 2016 1:36 PM

One of the houses linked to Celadon? You don't mean the Underground Path that leads to Celadon right? Or is it the one of the buildings next to Erika's gym?

Just an update to show this thing's not dead! just finished the last floor of Silph Co. One of the few maps I had to take some edits to, due to there not being equivalent tiles from RBY to GSC and the original map looking kinda weird anyway. I may do an edit down the line to make the table hexagonal like in the original, but for now here it is

You going to consider changed the OWs, and battle BGs?

Or, evern going as far as changing the HP bars in battle to match GSC?
That would make this hack even more top-notch.

Roger Davis January 7th, 2017 5:24 PM

Glad to see this isn't dead! Also I'm pretty sure the OP said they would change the overworlds and battle hud and everything, but that maps and pokemon sprites were first.

KrustyKong January 10th, 2017 7:37 PM

safari zone has been completed! added a little more decorations in the last house since the orignal was a little barren. also, going to update the OP again to include that I do plan on changing the battle backgrounds and HP bars.

Roger Davis January 14th, 2017 3:53 PM

Seeing the Safari Zone in GSC style gets me excited! Will you be including things like decapitalization as well? Though nearly everything was in capital letters in the original games, I do feel a lot of people prefer when the game isn't randomly shouting. Have you given thought to which you'll do yet? Also there is a method of making cut bushes only have to be cut once instead of each time the map changed, it was a nifty thing in Pokemon Throwback and I was wondering if you'd be making tweaks like that here.

The decap patch is already installed, although I think I may include an optional re-cap patch once this is finished. I think it'll add to the classic UI.
As for the Throwback styled cut bushes, I'd totally be willing to add that in. I don't that's a thing anyone would miss.

KrustyKong January 30th, 2017 5:06 PM

back with an update! Seafoam Island is all mapped now, save for the waterfall and current tiles. I can see the latter forming a bit of a problem since there's no GSC equivalent, but we'll deal with that when the time comes.

This week's update! I changed the tiles a little bit for Pokemon Mansion. Not only did I change the color of the walls and floor to make it resemble FRLG more, i also tweaked some of the wall sprites to make them "flow" better. to see what i mean, compare the corners of the Gym and the Mansion. I was thinking of going back and adding this upgrade to some other maps that use this tileset. What do you guys think?

Looks really nice! I would like for you to use the old pillars instead of the cardboard boxes though, since you're willing to use custom tileset colors.

This is what the tileset wouldve translated to in GSC. I never really saw them as strictly cardboard boxes, but they do only get used that way in gen 2. I created a mockup of your suggestion and I suppose it does resemble the FRLG map more, so I'll go ahead and change them.

KrustyKong February 15th, 2017 5:47 PM

This here's a special update only not really. February marks the first anniversary of the start of this hack! I am probably the most excited for this hack and can't wait til it's done. There are only a handful of areas left before I can move on to the next stage. This also means I'm getting closer to the inevitable roadblock I'm going to hit once I reach more advanced hacking topics.
This week's update is the Power Plant along with a re-tiled Pokemon Tower. The Tower has been causing a lot of uncertainty for me. Since there is really no comparable area in Gen 2, I had no guidelines for this area. I'm not really a fan of the blue border blocks you see in the screenshot, but I wanted to stay true to the game's original palette. Initially I used FRLG's palette which included purple and green, but I couldn't reasonably say that it fit with the entire rest of the game.

no, nothing really. I've been slackin but I can probably do the Pokemon League tomorrow. When the last map is finished, I can work on the scripts but only stuff like rival encounters and door switches. Probably the most complicated will be the Pokemon Center healing animation and the SS Anne departure.

Miah March 18th, 2017 8:49 PM

I like this. Can't wait to play it! Good luck!

KrustyKong March 19th, 2017 3:06 PM

Hey y'all. I'm back with an update. Possibly the last map-related one. I can't reasonably recreate the Pokemon League entrance room 1:1 since the trade room is no longer located on that floor. I could use gen 2's layout but I think this is better since it takes cues from all three.

http://i.imgur.com/aRLP0q1.png

I'm unsure of what style to use for the League members' rooms. The RBY designs are fine, but I've always wanted to face Loreli in an actual ice room. Plus I always thought it was weird how Will essentially has her old room, but Bruno has a brand new one with lava.

The title of this game is Pokemon FireRed Minus(GBC Demake). What do you think MINUS and DEMAKE mean?

If you want it to be a GBA one, it's literally just the normal vanilla FireRed.

I'm finally getting into adjusting some scripts and it wasn't as impossible as I thought. I've managed to figure things out here and there but I'm not so sure about others. I've not worked with Gen III for a while but I think as far as Oak goes you're better off inserting a new script. What's the issue with whiting out? If it's just coordinates that should be simple. Couldn't help with the PC though.

I also tried to do this myself in FR years ago and I encountered a bug with the old man in Viridian city after resizing the maps (I think he just kept handing out Pokeballs or Potions, it's been a long time since then I just know his script broke and he never attempted to stop you leaving Viridian), have you encountered this? Also a glitch with Cut bushes randomly appearing and disappearing.

I managed to get the Oak script working the way I wanted. The script that deals with whiting out and going back to the player's house isn't a person event or a level script so I have no idea how to edit it.
The cut tree thing you encountered probably had to do with not allowing enough space between maps for events to load. There's only a couple occurrences of OWs from an adjacent map being visible and the game handles them in a specific way that can't be replicated with A-Map alone.

Like I say it's been a while since I used FR but I think I can probably help with the whiting out, I would have to look through my old notes, is it just warping to the right coordinates that's the issue?

That makes sense, I dont know why that never occured to me, it was one of the issues prompting me to quit (that and really wanting to work with gen I/II).

I probably still have my old files on dropbox, I definitely still have my johto maps but I might still have my rom and scripts if any of it would be of use?

... What?
Underlined stuff aside, the obedience thing is trivial, you literally only need to open the ROM in a hex editor, go to 0x1D402, replace 97 with 00 and that's it.

ON: I just came to check how this project was doing, glad to see it is kind of alive.
Please don't let it die no matter what KrustyKong, if you lose interest try giving it to someone else or just plain release it in its current state.

I started school this month so I've been kinda busy with that (wow an actual excuse besides laziness lol). I got the Rival Battle in Cerulean done and am now working on Bill. I'm not sure how to alter the Teleporter's animations though. im guessing it has to do with these special commands in the script. For this one, since the original cutscene has no animations i guess I could just delete them, but I'm gonna have to learn how to actually change them eventually.

I just dusted off my PC account to come here and say this is awesome. Keep it up.

Also sent you an inbox offering collab (I'll do your graphics!).

Hackode007 October 25th, 2017 2:48 AM

Looks a nice hack! Would love to beta test!

Pkmn-Master November 8th, 2017 4:34 PM

Wow! Nice to see someone tackle this!

I attempted to do this many many years ago but I had a hard time remapping due to my low attention span lol

Can't wait to see the full thing! Good luck!

Saiklex November 16th, 2017 5:59 AM

This is really cool, I like the choice of GSC art! Always loved the Crystal sprites

Zenfestation December 19th, 2017 9:48 PM

Any updates on this?

I edited the battle screenshot with a GBC style background.
I forced the message background to pure white because amusingly, the GBC near-white (according to FRLG's textbox palette) is the exact same color as the default message background.

I love the screen shots! I have to play it!

PkMn Trainer Murasaki February 20th, 2018 11:35 PM

That looks awesome!

Sotireon February 22nd, 2018 11:40 PM

Oh I cant believe I just noticed this!! I'm working on adding more nostalgic RBY graphics onto Pokemon Throwback, since that already has the awesome 8-bit tunes to match. I have been wanting to edit maps to be remakes of the same old school RBY maps, but I seem to have trouble with tilesets,
So I just work on RB sprite revamps and RB Overworld sprite revamps. Woould love to combine these maps with my sprites, and with FRed Throwbacks music patch!! Is there a beta release coming? I will post some sprites to motivate you haha

Hey everyone! Progress with scripts is kinda hard to show through screenshots and I figured since I've been away for so long, why not post a video. So here is Bill's scene made to be more accurate to the original Gen 1. I'd show a comparison between this and the original version but I don't have any video editing software and my computer's kinda runnin low on memory. so here it is! I really hope to be able to make a lot of progress this year.

Wow, I compared the two, that turned out well. Good to see this still moving along.

????

Keep up the good work!
I simply adore the look and feel of Kanto in this refurbished classic style. Awesome project!

today i decided to do some work on the battle hud. as you can see, i used easyaspi314's mockup and added it into the game. the "EXP" text next to the exp bar was my edit tho. i wanted to get it in the same style as the "HP:" text. it's still a work in progress obviously. i tried looking up how to edit the font but didn't really find anything super helpful so i'll look into it later but i'm done for the day.

hey guys. i've done a lot of work on FR- this week so I thought I'd share an update. I've been doing some merging of the different aspects of the hack such as the Pokemon sprites and the OWs. The Pokemon sprites went along smoothly, but I ran into troubles with the OWs. in the end, I had to reimport every single one which took a while. Not all of them are done, but there's a good chunk. I'm thinking about updating the OP with some things I need help on/features I can't implement myself so if you wanna help, be sure to let me know. shoot me a PM or message me on discord. since this is a heftier update, I'll describe most of the changes represented in the screenshots:

https://imgur.com/NqvGu9D.png
SS Anne sprite added. script for the player leaving the dock after the ship leaves has also been properly edited.
https://imgur.com/L78W9sc.png
the second textbox style is now moved to the first slot. also edited the palette to match GSC.
https://imgur.com/PyKD3z1.png
showing off some of the OWs in the vermilion gym. The electric locks script hides the appropriate sprites!
https://imgur.com/y3Y9Dj2.png
All NPC text uses the default color. This will look better once I figure out where the palette for the fonts are located.

In addition to the battle backgrounds being blanked out, the palette for the "What will X do?" text now matches GSC. Also, I'm planning on updating certain Pokemon's back sprites to take advantage of the 64x64 space while still retaining the gen 2 look and palette limitations.

lastdragon June 8th, 2018 10:22 AM

Looks great! Wish it also made the game harder, though.

KrustyKong June 8th, 2018 11:28 AM

well, if there are some difficulty patches that just change the trainers pokemon and nothing else (like their location on the map) i dont see a reason why it would be incompatible with this

Xertified June 9th, 2018 2:55 AM

Would love to play this right now. Awesome to see the Crystal graphics in FireRed :")

Heaven Piercing Man June 9th, 2018 7:29 PM

Will this have the de-made OW sprites for every pokemon?

yes. they will not however walk around, as the sprites will be based on the gen 2 OW pokemon which stay in place and use the pokemon menu mini sprites.

KrustyKong August 7th, 2018 6:33 PM

hey guys, sorry for the hiatus. i got a summer job and wasn't able to work on the hack. here's some screenies of the rocket game corner. i actually had to expand the map dimensions for this one, so lets hope that doesn't royally fuck anything up. enjoy :)

This looks fantastic! I can see this being used as a base for future projects. Especially with all the GBC tiles already implemented.

Sotireon August 14th, 2018 1:21 AM

Hey krustykong!!! Your recent progress on this hack is amazing!!!! So impressed with your battle bud and maps and classic OW imports!! They do take a lot of time to manually import with NSE!! I read you were looking for the palette offsets of the textboxes?? NSE regular has the main fire red text box in one of its default bookmarks. You can open tge textbox and edit it manually. The colors in the middle of the palette, grey, lite gray, blue, lite blue, red, lite red are the font colors that the game uses for gender text and neutral text. You can make the colors darker or all black to match GSC style perhaps. And if u choose to edit the textbox design and frame, you have to draw on it manually within NSE, importing graphics here doesnt work :(
I would love to help you with recreating the GSC Font style if you want??

lilbluedemon August 14th, 2018 10:53 AM

This is looking fantastic, loving it so much!

What's the plan for the Sevii Islands?
Are you keeping them in?

I got most of the textbox stuff done (or i know how to edit) except for the "FIGHT POKéMON BAG RUN" sprites and palette. also for some reason, the arrow for continuing the text messes up when in the battle screen but is fine in the OW.

I'm not sure you can create a true GSC font because the characters are wider than the GBA ones.

Sevii Islands will most likely be unavailable in the initial downloads cuz I'd have to do a lot of the work myself in designing GSC styled maps for them and I never really liked them in the first place.

Inner Rhymes August 20th, 2018 5:36 AM

I'm just sorta curious though, do you plan to add Johoto as a post game region? I mean, I feel that it will go really well and feel more like a "Reverse" sequel.

Is anything going to be in it's place?
Sevii Islands served purpose of introduction to the national dex, and Johto Pokémon.
They'd need to be some substitute, unless national is just ready from the get-go.

i really would like to do that, but that wont be for a while if it gets done at all. maybe about as long as it will take to get the v1.0 out, since in johto, i'd have to make all the scripts from scratch.

johto if anything. national dex really isnt that necessary. i'll probably have it as an option you can get after the first gym or something. can't be any more specific than that cuz i really haven't thought about it much and it's very low priority.
