Pokémon types you rarely use?

We all have our preferences and strategies when it comes to battling, and types are a big part of that. So, are there any types you've avoided when it comes to creating teams - either intentionally or just because they never interested you?

I really don't use many Normal-types. I know they get great STAB on a lot of good moves, and a lot of them can be great support roles in a more competitive scenario, but I'm I pretty much just pick sweepers when it comes to battling and the lack of a strength against any other type make them rather ineffective in that regard.
I've also rarely gone out of my way to use some of the weirder types like Bug or Poison, just cause they tend to be a little less available and seem a fair bit weaker than some of the more common types.

Mister Coffee September 19th, 2016 6:03 PM

Dragon Type

I don't like playing them, I just don't.
Most of it is because everybody uses them and I was constantly on the receiving side of a Dragonite, Salamence, Garchomp, (insert stereotypical over powered OU Dragon pokemon here), I just grew to dislike using them all together.

It's a powerful typing (even with Fairy type, It's still an incredibly powerful type), it was just designed that way. I don't play with Legends or Dragon types because I don't want to be a good battler just because I use the obvious in your face powerful pokemon. I battle just fine without them, so why bother.

I can design an incredibly powerful team just fine without using a single Dragon, and my teams are designed to always be able to deal with Dragons. So not playing them and knowing that I can take them down makes me comfortable with fighting against them, so I don't hate them completely and I also don't get angry from people using them either.

Altaria September 19th, 2016 9:27 PM

I've noticed that I hardly ever use Electric types. I don't dislike them in the least, a few of my favorite Pokémon are electric (Luxray, Ampharos) but I just never have much of a place for them on my in game OR competitive teams. Aside from Platinum, of course, where I always raise a Shinx.

I also don't use a terrible lot of Ground Pokémon. Once again, nothing against them, I just don't choose them a whole lot. A lot of the ground type Pokémon have ugly designs to me (Diggersby, Dugtrio, Hippowdon) and when I choose my teams, looks do play a pretty big part. Not to say there aren't plenty of cute ground type Pokémon.

blue September 20th, 2016 2:12 AM

Bug and Rock. I just never really find use for these types since I always prefer to have more accessible types on my team. There aren't many Bug or Rock Pokemon that I can justify using at the moment.

Log September 20th, 2016 2:49 AM

Probably ice and steel. There are some Pokemon I like with either of those typings, but when I make my teams I never really find a place for them.

Dragon September 20th, 2016 3:35 AM

I kiiinda don't use Normal type pokemon all that much, surprisingly. I dunno, I always felt as though they were a bit too diverse? Or maybe I just didn't like the majority of Normal pokemon within a game?

Fritz September 20th, 2016 4:17 AM

I don't often use Normal or Fairy types, I've just never been a big fan of either of these types.

Qibli September 20th, 2016 4:22 AM

Normal - This typing do cover some STAB, but competitively you won't got much cover up as it's just too bland and does 1x damage on non-steel and non-rock type, also immune to ghost > ghost immune to normal
Ice - It does have high special defense, but the typing just too fragile to handle.

HyperMorian September 20th, 2016 4:36 AM

While I'm considerably okay with every 18 types available, the type I rarely use would be both Bug and Ice. Some popular Bug-Types are pretty good competitively (Forretress, Heracross, etc.), but the rest of it are rather below average in stats and common weaknesses. The same path goes along with Ice.

Lyrica September 20th, 2016 4:51 AM

I use most types; I never used to use dragon very much due to their limited availability, but in more recent games I've used them a little more as they're actually available relatively early on in the games. It's more rare that I'll use a pure single-type Pokemon, rather than any one particular type in general.

AliceBlaze September 20th, 2016 5:56 AM

I don't think I've ever used a rock type before. But thanks to Lycanroc, this will change when I get Moon version.

RyuNura September 20th, 2016 10:08 AM

I don't really play Normal or Fairy Types. I just don't like Normal types and Fairy types are the counter to my fave, Dragon. I know Ice is also a counter but I can get around it by having some fire types or fire moves.

Lunar September 20th, 2016 12:31 PM

I hardly ever use Normal, Bug or Ghost types, I just find the first two common and boring almost - plus I don't particularly like the designs of any bug type Pokemon. I don't really run into many Ghost types and I tend to prefer other Pokemon found in the region over them, for example, I would like to have a Gengar in FRLG but I don't really like Gastly, Haunter or the hassle of trading them to a different game in order to evolve and therefore I've never had a Gengar in a playthrough of any game.

Guest123_x1 September 20th, 2016 3:53 PM

Dragon, Fighting, and Ghost are among the types that I can think of using the least. Many of the Pokémon I use are dual-typed, and what Pokémon I use varies by game, so there's some types that I'm more likely to use in one game vs. another.

Ullion September 20th, 2016 7:37 PM

Rock, Poison and Fighting types are the most common types I just never end up using.

Poison type I like, I just don't particularly like many pokemon with that typing.

Rock type has never particularly intrigued me - and is overshadowed by my appreciation for the steel and ground types.

Fighting type I find incredibly boring - the type and the pokemon with that type.

SonOfPickle September 20th, 2016 8:57 PM

I don't use Ice or Grass type very often. They both have a healthy amount of weaknesses as well as typically being frail.

Elysieum September 20th, 2016 10:54 PM

Ice types are probably my least favourite. Such fragility. And it doesn't help that most Water Pokémon wield Ice moves, making Ice type Pokémon even less incentivised.

I haven't used many Ghost types either, but I think that'll change. I've always liked Rotom and Golurk.

Aslan September 21st, 2016 12:24 AM

I hardly use grass types most playthroughs! I'm usually fine just having a water and fire type. However I've grown more attached to using grass types in my recent playthroughs.

I've noticed that I never seem to use rock types though. I think they're cool Pokemon but they're too weak and slow for my liking. I also hardly use bug and poison types for some reason. I have used all three of these types but it seems like I never ever have them on my team. Ice is another type I almost never use since I tend to just teach my water pokemon Ice Beam!

Arjay September 22nd, 2016 5:53 AM

I've noticed, and it's not a conscious choice, that I almost never use Electric, Ice or Psychic types. I don't really like a lot of Psychic Pokémon, and I'm kind of neutral towards Electric types. But Ice is one of my favourite types; the only problem is they're so hard to come by, especially early in games. Usually, by the time I reach a stage of any Pokémon game where Ice types are obtainable/common, I've already got the bulk of my team, they're all much higher level than the wild Ice types and I can't be bothered raising something 20+ levels to get it competitive and on par with the rest of my party.

Ky0greK1ng September 22nd, 2016 6:14 AM

I rarely use the fairy type.

I love every other type, but I can't stand fairy... The designs of most fairy-type Pokemon just annoy me; I thought the game was fine before this extra type was added. I wish Jigglypuff and Snubbull were still just normal types... Haha. {XD}

Although, once in a while, I will use a belly drum Slurpuff. She's the one fairy-type I don't mind!

Flowerchild September 22nd, 2016 8:21 AM

I think on my next playthrough of... Something, I'll try and compose a team with Normal, Ghost, Poison, Bug, Fighting and Ice. Mixing things up a bit, since I've barely ever used any of those.

Imperator161 September 23rd, 2016 1:21 PM

I don't use Fairy types much. Fairy is probably my least favorite type, and there just aren't that many Fairy Pokemon that I want to use at the moment. I'm planning on using a Slurpuff on a run of Y, though, and I'm quickly growing attached to my new Swirlix, so that may change. I also don't tend to use that many Steel types, Bug types, or Ice types on my in-game teams. I'm fairly fond of ice attacks, but I usually just teach Ice Beam to my starter (invariably a Water type) and proceed with that instead.

BubbleBeams September 23rd, 2016 3:38 PM

I think at some point throughout all of the times I've played through the different games, I've had a Pokémon of at least one of each typing on my team with the exception of the Rock type (not counting challenge runs). No reason why, really. They just never found a place on my teams. I almost said Ghost type as well but lol Giratina was my precious baby in my Diamond run after I caught it.

Although until only a few years back, I'd always restricted myself to always having a fire, water, grass, electric, and flying type on my team which only left one extra slot for whatever else I felt like filling it with. Lately I've been making an effort to be more diverse with my teams.

Strelok Legend September 25th, 2016 10:47 AM

One typing I avoid is Poison, because except few of them, I hate Poison pokemon (including whose who have double type)

Reunilu September 25th, 2016 1:37 PM

Hmm, I tend to avoid Ice and Normal type Pokemon, usually. I don't know, Ice type Pokemon seem really fragile to me and Normal type Pokemon just seem really... boring. No word association intended.

Hikamaru September 25th, 2016 3:22 PM

For me, Rock and Ice-types.

Rock seems to be one of those types that I slap moves of the type for covarege, such as teaching it to a Fighting or Ground-type. However, with Rockruff and Lycanroc being a thing I may actually be tempted to use a Rock-type Pokemon on my main team for once come 7th Gen.

Ice is also a type I don't use any Pokemon on my main teams, since they are found often so late in the game that I already have an established team by that point, and I usually teach moves like Ice Beam to my Water-types anyway. Alolan Vulpix and Ninetales are making me think otherwise though.

KipKipFox September 30th, 2016 3:19 AM

My least favorite type, actually, is Water.

It's just been the one I used the least. It could just be I never picked the Water starter (not yet at least) and never grew to like it. But I find a lot of Water pokemon uninteresting anyway. I guess that's just me.

I have used Water before with Kyogre. But that's just about it. I do plan to choose Piplup in Platinum (or the DP remakes, if there are some) and replay Hoenn in OmegaRuby with Mudkip. So perhaps I'll change my mind.

Other than that, I don't use Poison much. It just doesn't have many types it's good against and I don't like the way most are designed. Also, Normal and Ghost. Not because they're bad pokemon, I just hadnt found any pokemon of this typing interesting enough to put on my team. Don't use Rock or Ground much either.

Sheep October 1st, 2016 6:48 AM

I almost never seem to have bugs on my team, even less than fighting. ); And while I looove ice types I hardly seem to use those either (not out of choice, it just ends up that way). Steel, ground, and rock end up meeting the same unfortunate fate lol. By the time I build up my team I end up with the more common water, grass, electric, water, psychic, fairy etc but almost none of those others.

Loriania October 2nd, 2016 6:57 PM

I don't use Poison, Ghost or Bug very much.

Rain October 2nd, 2016 7:29 PM

I don't think I have ever had a fighting type pokemon on my team; there haven't been any that have interested me.

I also don't use Fire, Rock, or Steel types very often.

LONLINESS October 10th, 2016 5:03 AM

Fairy types. Its not that I don't like using them, its just that I come across fairy types so rarely that its impossible for me to find on that i can use strategically...

MyUglyOne October 10th, 2016 4:23 PM

I hardly ever use like half the typings. I rarely use:

Fairy
Fighting
Rock
Ground
Poison
Bug
Steel
Dragon
Normal
Dark
Ghost

I generally rotate between using: Fire, Water, Grass, Bird, Electric, Psychic and Ice.

I think I need to start branching out a bit more lol

NohBuddy2016 October 10th, 2016 4:27 PM

Water & Rock

Mr. Meme October 10th, 2016 4:38 PM

Fairy types and Grass types. It's quite simple, really: I just don't think there are that many cool-looking Grass or Fairy types aside from Sceptile, who, in my opinion, is the second most overrated Pokemon besides Scizor.

Lycanroc October 10th, 2016 6:40 PM

I never use Poison or Fighting types. I just don't really like very many of them, and so I'd rather use other things. I also find myself never using Fairy types; not because I dislike them - that's false - but by the time I stumble across a fairy I like, I already have my team built up. I'm trying to branch out in the coming games, I'll be using a fairy, as well as Ice (Alolan Ninetales) and Rock (Lycanroc), two other types I rarely use

Lewis W October 10th, 2016 7:11 PM

There is 1 type I nearly never use : bug.

I just realized that actually lol.

It's just not my thing.

Florges October 10th, 2016 7:14 PM

I don't use a lot of Poison types. I think they have too many weaknesses in game, so I rarely ever use them. The only exception is Vileplume or Victreebel, but I typically use it as my grassmon in Gen I.

Altairis October 10th, 2016 10:51 PM

Bug-types. Yuck. I only really like a select few, like Butterfree. I rarely use them otherwise.

Maybe Ice-types too? Or Dark-types? Not because I don't like them, but I dunno. I just don't.

But why? Joltik only wants to be you're friend! It buzzes too, I imagine! Think of it like a neck pillow that vibrates my neck hurts at the moment)! And they're so cute! I wish real bugs were as cute...

I don't really use Normal types that often unless they're paired with Flying, but even then, I prefer to utilize something else. Porygon is probably on of the few I would consider using. Normal just doesn't seem as useful. It has no strengths or type advantages, and it has two disadvantages, being Normal cannot hit Ghost Type Pokemon, and Fighting Typre Pokemon and Fighting Type moves are so common it's hazardous out there for a Normal Type. Normal Type moves are also resisted by Rock Type Pokemon as well. No strengths, too many weaknesses.

PageEmp October 12th, 2016 8:36 PM

Sorry, but I think thanks to countless nuzruns I've used at least one mon from each type as of now.

If I was making this post a year ago... Then I will say normal or ice.

Degurchaff October 20th, 2016 1:07 PM

I see myself rarely using Ghost Flying and Steel types

Ghost type because almost all of them besides the Duskull evolution tree has terrible defense and i really dont like the move set they have!

Flying is alright i guess but most final evolutions of the flying types has a meh stat growth
They do however got some pretty awesome moves like air slash brave bird and sky attack
Althrough that does not make up for how quick they go down in battle like
One rock or electric type attack is enough for them to go down.

Steel type ah the steel type awesome defense but weak against the common Special type attack like flamethrower They have some cool looking evolutions like Scizor and Steelix But alas they can get knocked out rather quickly If not the right strategy is used.

Itcheeee October 20th, 2016 3:17 PM

I could use Steel types more often, only one or two I can think of in my actual teams. And grass, I think in total I've used 3 or 4 mostly starters. Neither of those types ever seem to work into my teams, but I actually go by favorite Pokemon first when making my teams. Sometimes Pokemon I do like just can't fit into the 3 (or 2 with XY) games of that generation (not counting remakes).

RetroPokeman October 20th, 2016 3:21 PM

I rarely use fighting types, but that may very well change with the introduction of jangmo line.

FireSnow October 21st, 2016 1:44 PM

Thinking back on all my teams that i can remember, the only type that i basically never used was Psychic and after looking at who all the Psychic are, it kinda makes sense. I'm not really a fan of the Pokemon with that type all that much, save for Meowstic and Slowpoke (for their derpy faces). The only Psychic type I've used that i can remember in a playthrough though is Musharna and even then I boxed it around the 5th or 6th gym to make room for a different 'mon.

Migit78 October 21st, 2016 3:42 PM

I don't have a particular type I try to avoid, but I feel like Ice types rarely make my team.
I think this is due to them generally being found in the later stages of the game, and my team tends to grow with me through game play.

After the first few routes, I get pretty lazy on changing out a member of my team for a new catch, because it would require grinding to level them up. Unless theyre a pokemon I love, or have a design cool enough that I want to use them

Linyit October 22nd, 2016 6:10 AM

Bug, Poison and Rock.

Kikaito plush October 25th, 2016 4:36 AM

probably Steel and ground type I seem to hardly use them.

Fopuy October 26th, 2016 8:47 PM

I never really got myself to use Bug type pokemons. I dont know but i don't really like them.

Lycanthropy October 27th, 2016 6:48 AM

I seldom use Dragon and Ice type Pokémon because they're rarely obtainable in the first half of the game. By that time I have basically formed my final team that's going to face the Elite Four already. I don't really like swapping out Pokémon I have been training for a long time.

Sydian October 27th, 2016 11:04 AM

Most types that were Physical before the split in gen IV. I often find myself using a more colorful array of types -- like Fire, Water, Electric, Grass, etc. So I often forgo types like Fighting, Ground, Rock, apparently all the brown ones when you look at the color coding, lmao. Welp.

LyokoGirl5000 November 3rd, 2016 10:50 AM

Types You Just Don't Use

Does anyone else have types that they just don't ever seem to use? For me, it's the Rock and Steel types. I also have a weird aversion to having both a Fire and Electric type on my team. Unless I choose the Fire starter, I almost never have both on my team. It's either the Electric type OR the Fire type. Not both.

Lunar November 3rd, 2016 2:54 PM

I hardly ever use Rock, Steel or Dark type Pokemon, I guess I don't really like any with those typings. The last Steel type I used was Steelix in HGSS and I seriously can't even remember what my last Rock and Dark types were (ironic as my favourite Pokemon is Zorua).

icycatelf November 4th, 2016 6:04 AM

Definitely Steel. The only time I ever use them are when I'm purposely trying to use Pokémon I've never used/used much, but they always get boxed in the post-game. Most of them are also really slow and I prefer battles to go faster. Least-favorite Type for sure.

I do plan to use Alolan Sandslash, though. Its Typing isn't the greatest and I think I read that its Speed was lowered, but I've always liked Sandslash's design and I think it's awesome that it gained my favorite Type (Ice).

I don't use Dragon-, Rock-, or Fighting-Types much, either. Just not many of them that I like and the few that I do are either hard to get or not very reliable.

CF1994 November 4th, 2016 12:25 PM

Rock Types weren't my cup of tea in terms of usage, barring mons like Tyranitar, Aggron, Omastar, and Archeops.

Mainly because a lot of Rock Type Pokémon are slow, and most Rock Type attacks can easily miss due to poor accuracy. They also tend to sport a lot of weaknesses, which didn't help at all.

Khoshi November 5th, 2016 7:19 PM

To me, there's almost no point in using a Rock-type Pokemon if you can just teach a non-Rock type with high attack Stone Edge. Makes the type basically useless, especially since without Rock moves, the type becomes a matter of "anything I can do, the Steel-type does better". Unless you're Tyranitar, of course.

Same with the Ice-type. Why have a whole Pokemon dedicated to the worst defensive typing in all of Pokemon if you can just teach your Water-type Ice Beam, which is arguably the best Ice-type move of all? "But you're missing out on dat STAB tho, Imperishable you fool!" Nonsense, I'd never use a Walrein, Glalie or Vanilluxe. Even then, Mega Glalie uses its ability and Normal-type moves instead of its definitive Ice typing.

I don't use Grass-types because it's just a super boring type to me, not because you have other options that can make you completely avoid the type altogether. I just don't like Grass, lol.

The Silver Fox November 13th, 2016 9:52 PM

For me it is Steel type and Fairy type. I have caught steel types in such a less amount that i even remember them -

Lucario (my first)
Dialga
Elgyme (sorry for spelling if it is wrong)
Escalavier

Since i'd not played gen 6, i'd never used fairy type.

MewAllDay November 15th, 2016 4:43 PM

Bug I like the least so I use them the least usually.

Smash Brony November 17th, 2016 6:38 PM

The type that stands out most in my mind for this topic is Poison.
It's because in older games, there wasn't much point to having one as I usually already have a Pokémon of a type that beats the types Poison does & more.
& In the newer games, there were still not any Poison type that I especially liked.
WARNING: READ THE FOLLOWING ONLY IF YOU KNOW THE LEAKED CONTENTS OF SUN/MOON.
Spoiler:
Although, I am definitely going to have Salazzle on my team on Sun.

Flowerchild December 1st, 2016 8:13 PM

I've come out of my shell a bit and used a Dark-type Pokémon in Sun. It hasn't been super useful, but I don't have anything else yet that deals with ghosts, so whatevs. It's Umbreon, which is also a pretty good tank.

Besides that, just been using my usual types. I wanted to do more unusual stuff in S&M but it didn't really happen :/

Lemonski December 2nd, 2016 7:07 AM

Now that I think about it, I'm pretty sure I've never had a Fighting-type in my main team.

xXLunaSolXx December 3rd, 2016 5:38 AM

I barely use rock-, bug-, steel- or ground-type Pokemon. Maybe it is because most of them don't appeal to me that much?

Gardevoir the Dragon Slayer December 3rd, 2016 7:51 AM

I tend to avoid ground, rock, bug, poison and normal (and now as you don't need fly from gen vii on flying) as I consider those meh boring types.
Also don't use Dragon much.

Sylphiel December 3rd, 2016 9:35 AM

Rock is one I don't normally use, for sure.

Bug, dragon (since by the time I find a dragon type, I usually have a team in place that I like), ice. Also ghost, the only reason I've been using ghost types this gen in my team is because of the amount of new dual-type ghosts, heh. I could probably list like half the types if I were to list all the ones I tend to not use. Rock is definitely the one I just about never use for any reason, though.

Frozocrone December 3rd, 2016 10:47 AM

I don't normally use Flying types for the Flying type, normally for the secondary type.

Rock types rarely make it into the team for the same reason (exception was Lycanroc)

Same here. Not only are they more colourful, I like their moves move. I especially don't use Bug, Steel and Rock types, unless they happen to be secondary types.

Umbreon92 December 3rd, 2016 1:18 PM

Normal, Bug, and Poison. I just never had any luck with those ones.

Flowerchild December 3rd, 2016 1:28 PM

I really want to use Dragon-types but by the time they become available my team is always already set. I often try to cram one into the team at the expense at some other member but it normally doesn't work out and I switch back to the benched team member after a little while.

Polar Spectrum December 4th, 2016 4:58 PM

I honestly stay away from too many dragon types, probably just my old preconception of them being overused.

Perhaps I'll trian more, now that there's a wide variety of dual typings they have, and fairies poop on 'em.
