Character Customization

"In Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon, you can change things like your character’s clothing, hairstyle, and even eye color (thanks to colored contact lenses). Adventure through Alola while showing your own flair for fashion!

You can change the look of your clothing with colorful dyes! Perhaps there’s a design you like, but you’d prefer it in a different color. Now that wish can come true!"

So it looks like character customization is most definitely back, and with even more content! How do you feel about the expanded customization feature?

Charlie Brown September 20th, 2016 5:51 AM

I never used character customisation that much in X/Y but I really like the direction they're taking it. I think dying clothes is a very fitting thing for Alola, given the region's vibe, and I wonder if there'd be a way to design your own clothes to have uniquely dyed clothes, like Animal Crossing. Also the option to not wear a hat is a small thing but quite cool as well :D

Lunar September 20th, 2016 7:18 AM

Yeah this definitely looks like a step up from X and Y's customization and I'm super excited to try out all of the options. It seems really extensive and I love the vibrancy we can bring to our characters it just seems perfect for Alola.

Sirfetch’d September 20th, 2016 7:25 AM

I'm so excited for tank tops as part of the customization

Hikamaru September 20th, 2016 7:28 AM

Wow you can actually now change the color of your clothes manually? I know X/Y had different colored variants of the same clothing items, but I have to say it's definitely taken a step further. Don't be surprised if I end up spending all my cash on clothes hahahahaha

MarinoKadame September 20th, 2016 7:46 AM

Finally can use white hairs which will be fantastic.

Hikamaru September 20th, 2016 7:49 AM

I think the new Ash Brown hair color option is the one that matches my hair. Definitely pleased I can now have a trainer that looks more like me.

Also, I don't know if anyone noticed this but glasses are confirmed!

Starry Windy September 20th, 2016 7:56 AM

I hope this will make up for the fashion selections for males, and I'm glad the that there are more selection of hair styles, hair colors and also contact lenses. The fact that I can pick other colors of same clothing caught me off guard a bit, but it's even more nicer, for sure.

Iceshadow3317 September 20th, 2016 8:05 AM

I love burgundy hair. Don't know why but it has always been one thing I have loved in anime. So I am extremely glad they are getting burgundy hair. No doubt my female character in my secondary game will have Burgundy hair.

I am also glad they have the color thing. But I hope if the shirt or whatever has 2 colors, that we will be able to choose both colors and I hope they have a nice color wheel.

MarinoKadame September 20th, 2016 8:32 AM

For me I'm going Dark skinned with white hair for sure.

EC September 20th, 2016 9:18 AM

Fantastic news to have it 100% confirmed. Can't wait to see all the options at our disposal.

Ullion September 20th, 2016 9:31 AM

Yes I love this! Glad to know customization is back in full swing! Loving the options and possible changes they showed us today! White hair is love <3

Jason Wolf September 20th, 2016 10:57 AM

I;m concerned by the "festival coins" we see in the trailer. i don't want to have to play minigames for clothes. I will accept battles to earn the coins though.

Arjay September 20th, 2016 11:35 AM

Looking at these images I think it confirms the 3 things I wanted most. Glasses, the ability to remove hats, and hopefully a bigger range of options for male character clothes.

I wonder if the inclusion of makeup means that facial hair will be an option; both were merely included for PR videos. Also, we could see face and body paint as an option since we are in Hawaii. In this way male and female characters could have some form of face paint rather than only allowing females to customize skin accessories (sadly I doubt tattoos will be included).

Rivvon September 20th, 2016 1:10 PM

Finally something I can be really hyped about! Honestly, this looks like it's going to be my favorite thing in the entire game... And glasses?! I'm so glad! What did Serena have against glasses that she could put them on her hat but not on her head? Did her hat have a hard time seeing?

And my friend is going to be very excited to see she can make her hair white...

I hope to see this feature continue to grow in future main-series titles!

blue September 20th, 2016 1:19 PM

I'm really gonna be torn on so many choices with both protagonists, I just know it. I'm even happier with the expansion of the customization considering how I'm really not a fan of either protag default designs.

There will probably be battles and minigames we can play in every town to earn them. I wouldn't think they would put it at nothing but minigames. They might also be from miniquests. We might also be able to buy the coins with the money we earn in the game. As long as they aren't luck based, I will be fine.

But can someone tell me exactly where it was confirmed we could dye clothing? I didn't see anything about dying clothing, just saw them changing clothing, but nothing about dying. Or did I miss something?

It wasn't in the trailer but the official website confirms it here.

Oh ok thanks! Guess I need to read the site. Always forget that the site sometimes has more info than what we get in the trailer.

Pokken Lucario September 20th, 2016 2:05 PM

i really loved thet back in xy! now it's even better.
the game have a lot to offer, can't wait.

Iceshadow3317 September 20th, 2016 2:41 PM

Also, the Festival Coins may also be from taking photos with the Pokemon Snap Mechanic like feature in the games.

I just hope once we unlock the clothing, they stay unlocked similar to XY. I really hope we don't have to continuously have to pay.

I feel facial hair wouldn't make sense on the protagonist since they're meant to be aged around 10. But then with makeup being an option for the female, anything can happen.

MegaKuriboh September 20th, 2016 3:08 PM

Where was it confirmed that the female avatar could wear makeup?

The bottom-left pic of this shot from the Japanese trailer shows she is apparently wearing lipstick.

Protagonists in newer gens do not look remotely close to 10 though nor has in-game age been referenced as such. It's more like the 14-18 age group. According to game scenario author Toshinobu Matsumiya, Hilbert and Hilda were initially visualized to be at the age of 16. The trend established in gen 5 seems to have carried through XY and this generation as the age group playing pokemon ages.

Imperator161 September 20th, 2016 3:50 PM

I'm excited to see customization return, and with more options. The dye option intrigues me, as that was something that bugged me about XY (there were certain items I liked, but I didn't really like the color they came in). Not sure if I'll ditch my hat or not, as I'm so used to having something on my head from all these generations, so I guess I'll wait to see what all of the options look like.

My guess is that I'll play around with customization for a bit, then settle on a trainer I like and never change it again. That's what I did in X. But I really liked having the option last time, as I didn't care for the default look of the XY trainer, and I feel the same way this time around about the trainers, so hopefully customization will help.

Oh wow that's awesome! I love to see that Game Freak are really putting everything into the feature this time!

The new Protagonists really seem young to me this time, almost younger than they've ever been (At least compared to Hibert, Hilda, Calem and Serena) but at least hopefully there will be ways to make them look older.

And to think character customization was almost only going to be an X/Y thing, I'm so glad it's returning and better than ever in this game! Also, glasses! now give me my PWT and Battle Frontier Game Freak

Iceshadow3317 September 20th, 2016 3:55 PM

I also have to agree that the default look for Solis and Luna (My names for them) look younger than 5th and 6th Gens.

But with the customization, I can easily see based on what you do, to make them look older or younger. For example, the bottom left pic that Hikamaru posted looks a lot older than the others to me. I would say there are still around the same age as the last 2 gens.

I do get what you said here because I remembered Hilbert/Hilda and Calem/Serena deviating from the usual 10-something year old protagonists, but I guess Game Freak wanted to change stuff up a bit. Sun & Moon's protagonists seem to be more like around the usual 10-11 year old that most games have.

BubbleBeams September 20th, 2016 5:50 PM

I'm very excited about the customization in these games, especially now that it's possible to make the clothes a different color. So many times when I was playing X/Y I was disappointed because I liked certain pieces of clothing together but the color scheme never worked.

It also looks like we get the option to go without a hat which I'm also happy about, since I'm not a huge fan of hats. lol

Also:

Wasn't that later changed, so Hillbert and Hilda are now 14 according to Bulbapedia? I believe whether or not the facial hair options comes back can help determine the actual age of the SM trainers, so the people at /vp/ can stop debating about whether or not the female SM trainer is 10.

I think you're right at this point. I hope the festival coins are not a monthly thing. Although it would make sense that certain towns only have festivals once a month on certain days. But that would make it too hard to customize and you can imagine what else festival coins are for. :L :(
Hopefully, there's a battle-type game that earns you festival coins. :)

Sabrewulf238 September 20th, 2016 10:07 PM

To some degree I feel like they probably want the age of the protagonists to be up to interpretation. Especially now that trainer customization is such a big deal. So I guess depending on how you customize them they can look anywhere from 10 to 16.

Hiatus September 21st, 2016 1:59 AM

Would any of us know if it's possible to remove the hat of the hero when customizing, just like how it is for heroine?

It was the case with X/Y as well, sometimes you can make your trainer look older or younger based on what customization options you used.

Also, those Festival Coins that Jason pointed out - I wonder how we'll earn those if they are what we spend the clothing and hairstyles on?

esperance September 21st, 2016 4:03 AM

Soooo happy with this announcement. It's basically everything I could have wanted and more for customization. I was worried for the longest time we wouldn't get it and it would be forgotten, exclusive to XY.

Hikamaru September 21st, 2016 4:17 AM

I'm likely planning Ash Brown for my trainer's hair, since it resembles my actual hair color. Not sure on what clothes I'd wear, since I do want to try all of them.

blue September 21st, 2016 6:12 AM

Hold up, make up?! Seriously, it's sooo good to see them expanding character customisation to this level. I never even realised the female protagonist wearing lipstick.

It was just scary because around the time ORAS was released I think Junichi said something along the lines of "Only people in Kalos are fashionable", something like that, so whether or not it would return ever was up in the air, many of us just thought it was gonna be another one of those great features that's locked to one game because Game Freak likes to do that for some reason. Glad it's not the case, or they heard the fans whining and had a change of heart.

Altairis September 21st, 2016 8:39 PM

Every new design I see I love a lot. I reallly liked the girl's original design, so hmm, I'm not sure if I'll change her too much the first time around, but the boy is so generic looking that he is definitely getting a makeover. I like the design in the op :)

blue September 22nd, 2016 12:52 AM

Yeah, I definitely knew for a while it would be back.. just not on this scale. The amount of detail that has gone into customisation for this gen compared to last gen is just great.

Ah I remember when we were all concerned about customization's fate. Maybe Game Freak realized how popular the feature was, so for Sun & Moon they knew they had to bring it back, but also make it better.

I don't think they would leave the guys out on removing hats, but if they do, there is at least sun visors that I saw in the trailer, so you can still show off the hair. And if they do leave out the guys again, I'm probably not even going to play as a male this generation. I love customizing characters, so I will be disappointed if the males get the short end again.

Fritz September 22nd, 2016 7:50 AM

I'm glad you don't have to wear a hat in this game, why they didn't make them optional in X&Y I'll never know. Hopefully the male clothes are better this time.

From what I've seen regarding customization in the new trailer, I think the males are finally getting some good options so maybe Game Freak did learn from what happened with males getting the short end of the stick in X/Y. Still won't stop me playing as the female, since I love the female protagonists better anyway.

blue September 22nd, 2016 10:18 AM

The option to remove the hat makes it so much better. Most of the looks that I prefer from the recent trailers are the ones without hats.

MarinoKadame September 22nd, 2016 12:11 PM

Also I think the option of more hair colors also help, they also added an extra shade of skin color over XY.

Caaethil September 22nd, 2016 12:50 PM

Is anyone keeping track of how many trailer have 'finally confirmed' customisation? It feels like we have this same routine every trailer now.

It was confirmed in the first trailer. Or if you refuse to accept it unless it actually says "There is customisation in this game" (despite it appearing numerous times in trailers), I'm pretty sure they mentioned it live at E3.

Dyeing stuff is cool. And yes, males can remove hats. That has also been confirmed for quite a while, it was shown in a Battle Royale.

I think it's because some of us are only watching the English trailers so that's likely why they only found out about the trainer customization this week. I'm someone who also watches the Japanese trailers so I tend to pay attention to what's shown in them as well, and with the Battle Royal shown in a previous trailer it also confirmed customization several months prior, with a Japanese trailer showing a trainer who has no hat, indicating the confirmation of being able to remove the hat.

LennieFrost September 22nd, 2016 2:37 PM

I'm glad about the no hats feature. I personally am not the biggest fan of the female hat. Just hats in general

Esper September 22nd, 2016 3:21 PM

No hats. Thank goodness. I'd have been happy with just that. The option to change the color of the clothes is more than I expected and I'm pretty pleased.

I wonder what barriers there will be in getting all the different clothes. Will we be kept out of certain shops because we're not cool enough again?

I don't think we'd want that to happen again, considering the style was very vague and people didn't know how to raise it. But it appears the trailer has shown us some currency called Festival Coins, so we'll see how that comes into play if that's what we buy the clothes with.

tokyodrift September 22nd, 2016 4:21 PM

I'm so so so so glad they allow the removal of the hats! I think that was my biggest pet peeve back in X&Y. I'm super glad it decided to make a return and they even expanded on the feature. I was actually really fond of the male's outfits they showed in the teaser.

Guest123_x1 September 22nd, 2016 6:50 PM

I'm glad to see that Customization will be making a comeback for Sun/Moon, and in a somewhat more expansive form. However, I'm concerned about two things:
*How will the Festival Coins be obtained? Does this mean a return of a Game Corner-like feature, is it something that can only be done by connecting to other players online, or whatever?
*Someone on BMGF claimed that customization with outfits will only be available in the post-game. Why restrict the feature to after finishing the main game when it was previously available much sooner in X/Y?

Most likely there'll be a festive in that city/town where boutique is, where we can play games or shopping by using Festive Coins. I think the basic assumption is using Poke Money to buy Festival Coins (hence the Game Corner-like feature). However the clothes sold may be very expensive, which is why I recall some quests give you a lot of money (Pyukumuku quest gives you $20 000 for completing it), or maybe other quests that gives you Festive Coins.

That aside, do you guys think that the boutique shop will be only at 1 area, which is that specific city/town? Since the boutique uses Festive Coins I can't see any other city/area having a boutique and not using Festive Coins, but using normal Poke Money instead. That would be odd, cause that will make Festive Coins a bit redundant.

manfromjohto September 23rd, 2016 1:23 AM

I am pretty we can confirm that the 2nd Island will have an outfit shop.It isn't the biggest town and is one of the less talked about areas seen on the big map.

Picture from trailer: Right hand side. Pretty sure that is an outfit shop

Island and Location: Orange circle is about where the outfit shop is at. Put the circle on the other side of the town. The big map didn't show the 2nd Arc at the north part.

I would imagine everyone wouldn't want that, especially if one hates the default designs of both trainers. I don't mind the default appearances, but I can see where others are going with not wanting to be stuck with them.

blue September 23rd, 2016 3:11 AM

I highly doubt that. We saw that clothes shop in the Town on the second island, surely they wouldn't close that off until post-game. I would see absolutely no benefit of doing that, especially since they made a point of character customisation in the latest trailer.

Yeah, I thought that "postgame only customization" claim would be fake. The question is, will there be a clothes shop/salon on every island? Because I'd imagine those who don't like the default protagonist designs will want to know how soon you can start getting the clothes and hairstyles.

Like X/Y, I could see each clothing shop have different clothes that change every day.

I know there's an outfit shop somewhere, but will there be more than 1 outfit shop? The latest trailer from japan only showcase the player go inside a hair saloon shop (scissor sign), then it jump onto a boutique, where we don't know where it's located at. If we were to assume the boutique is at the second island (that place is also seems appropriate for festive to be held there, with the japanese culture thingy), I guess other places won't have boutique? Because my reasons is this:

1. if there are another boutique, will they need Festive Coins as well?
2. if they need Festive Coins as well, does that mean there's festivals (hence same mini-games, since festives are about them) on every island? that seems like a "copy + paste" which could make things boring.
3. if other boutiques won't need Festive Coins and just uses normal cash, then why implement Festive Coins if you can just set the price higher with normal cash?

I just assume there'll be 1 boutique in the game because I dont think festivals all over the Alola Region are logical to me. Yet maybe I'm just thinking too much on the Festive Coins :/

MarinoKadame September 23rd, 2016 9:13 AM

XY only had 1 post game outfit, Slurrpuff dress for female and Pangoro hat for male. I don't think they will lock clothes for post game.

Festive coins is maybe for some type of special clothes, what if you can get some Kimono and other special occasion outfits with them ?

Iceshadow3317 September 23rd, 2016 11:44 AM

As others have said and as I said in my post, I am positive there will be more than 1 outfit shop. There might be one on Melemele, but I cannot tell from the pictures we have seen. I think there is also one other city or town on Melemele that is north of the big town there, so we might have one there.

We know there is one on Akala, as I showed above. I think there will be at least one more somewhere on that island.

Big Island I am certain will also have 1 or 2. The last island, the one with the canyons, is the town that has all the boat houses in the trailers. But again, I was not able to see an outfit shop.

I think Kalos had 6 Outfit Shops. I don't know why they would have any less than that unless the shops were expanded to a much larger section, but I think there will still be at least one on each island, as i would think they would want to catch each Island's Style.

There area areas on the map, on every island, that could give us festival coins. And I don't know why they would lock customization behind the storyline. Even in Kalos, we were at least able to change hats.

As for the Salon there is probably only one. I am pretty sure that it is on first island or second island as well, but not in the same town as the outfit shop I posted above. As there is no real reason to have more than 1. But who knows? We were able to change hair as soon as we got by the 1st Gym once we did the stuff in Lumious, so being on the first island is likely.

Rivvon September 24th, 2016 7:10 AM

Just so long as they did what XY did and have a hat shop very early on so I can change that awful hat asap I don't mind if I have to wait a bit longer for the real changing of clothes and hair. But keeping it all for the post-game is unreasonable.

Starry Windy September 24th, 2016 7:18 AM

I'm not sure if they would introduce the customization after getting through post-game, since some people wanted to change the trainer's appearance on the get-go, so I think the customization saloon/shop should appear in Sun/Moon on at least second or third town/city they visited just like in X and Y.

Lunar September 24th, 2016 7:40 AM

Having character customization post-game just wouldn't make sense, it would really reduce the feeling of your own adventure. Plus, there's almost guaranteed to be outfit shops throughout Alola.

Iceshadow3317 September 24th, 2016 8:01 AM

There might be one post game shop, but I think it just be new designs and cost a lot more.
I don't know what it would have, but I kinda consider the Lumiose Boutique as a Post Game Shop, even though I think people got in it before finishing the game somehow. I know I didn't get to get until after I finished the game and Investigation Missions.

I agree with them. The point of customization is to make your trainer feel more like an individual, like your adventure being more personal than ever. Given the large amount of clothing items, having several boutiques in Alola would sense. In Kalos, I believe we had around 6 with one special post-game clothing item, aka the aforementioned Pangoro hat and Slurpuff dress.

My guess for how many boutiques in Alola - considering there's four islands I could say four, each one having different items that are on offer every day like in X/Y, but having one boutique on each island. I could also see two for each island, having eight all together if they really want to have a lot of options in this game.

blue September 25th, 2016 2:00 AM

I would think that each island would hold at least one boutique and/or hair salon. X/Y had the first clothes shop in Santalune City, that meant you could change your clothes before even getting the first badge. It would be pointless to introduce (or expand) such a fundamental feature only for it to be activated post-game.

If we want a good place to grind money, we need rematchable trainers. That's why the Battle Chateau worked, because it was great for training and getting money from the trainers. Luck Incenses have actually been easier to get in most recent games due to stands that sell Incenses.

blue September 27th, 2016 1:05 AM

VS. Seeker would be perfect for making good money. In Platinum you could attach an Amulet coin to a pokemon and just rematch the socialites on the Route south of Hearthome getting 12k each battle, both of them with only one Pokemon each iirc. Money for clothes is a must, especially if S/M has expanded the variety.

Charlie Brown September 27th, 2016 6:26 AM

The trailers showed Festival Coins or something similar being used to purchase clothes, right? Maybe that currency would only be used for clothes so your income supply wouldn't be too affected? Unless that currency is just for special events or types of clothes.

blue September 27th, 2016 9:00 AM

Maybe the festival coins are used to unlock or purchase special clothing items, kind and like how Battle Points work. In the trailer the player only had a low amount which would imply that you can still use the normal currency to purchase clothes and accessories, whilst the more rare items can be bought with Festival Coins.

Thunderflare September 28th, 2016 8:36 AM

I'd like to be able to put on a lab coat so I can be the Pokemon Professor.

Rivvon September 28th, 2016 2:19 PM

I kind of hope we can still use Poké Dollars for buying clothes. Since the "chuck Pyukumuku back into the water" mini-game gives you a ton of money... I always thought that was a potential way to get money to prepare for buying clothes. There may even be other similar mini-games in the game to help offset the high price of clothes.

I am intrigued to find out how we earn those Festival Coins, especially if we seem to be using them to buy the clothes instead of our usual Pokedollars.

Yeah. I really hope they explain them in the coming Corocoro or the news we get on the fourth. I just hope it isn't a grind fest. It can't be too much worse than Kalos, or at least I wouldn't think. That would be taking a large step back and possibly having a lot of backlash.

It has to be something we can do during the main game, so I don't think it will be too big of a grind fest, unless you really want something.

I still say some things are this:
Taking Photos for people with the Snap like feature.
Battles in certain places.
Rewards from doing miniquests.
Rewards for catching certain pokemon at a given time.
In Game Contests like Bug Catching (I kinda hope something like this returns)

Cyrain September 29th, 2016 3:49 AM

Maybe we only get festival coins in sun and moon:D? Have we seen classic pokedollaes somewhere so far?

Another Theory would be that these coins are earned through some special competion, event, etc and are an optional way to pay for clothes. You can also pay with normal money, but also with this special currency. Like pokémiles or battlepoints.

I think this would be really cool! For example like the Pyukumuku sidequest, have they revealed what the reward is for completing that? I can see Festival Coins being a cool reward for that - it's something different which adds value for doing the quests and making use of some of SuMo's added features.

If I recall correctly, wasn't it shown to reward the player with 20, 000 Pokedollars?

Ullion September 29th, 2016 7:45 AM

Have we seen any info yet about where we can get some for sure? if not, my guess is that it could be something similar to a battle frontier, but using the name 'festival coins' instead of 'battle points'?

Juno October 2nd, 2016 4:42 PM

I'm really excited for customization to return! I love the female protagonist's default hairstyle, I think it's super cute and looks good with hats.

One thing that really threw me off in XY was that my character would look good in the preview, but then in-game she kind of looks like a potato with a really long torso and stubby legs, which made a lot of clothes look weird IMO. I don't mind a "cute" style, but the body was just way too long, and I'm so glad they went with more attractive body proportions here.

Charlie Brown October 2nd, 2016 11:27 PM

So I posted this in another thread but thought it's a relevant discussion to be had here. I think it would be really cool if we had an online marketplace-type thing for the clothes that we 'dye', where you can look through other people's designs and download/purchase ones that you think are cool. Would be a cool way to increase connectivity and link it up with trainer customisation imo!

blue October 3rd, 2016 3:08 AM

They had something like that in Animal Crossing for the 3DS where players could share their designs via QR Code. I didn't create any but there were some awesome designs which I also think would work nicely for S/M. It would be a great way to utilize and expand the connectivity for the games, moreso than X/Y did.

Benermerut October 3rd, 2016 7:34 AM

The official site makes it look like you can only dye white clothes, and only dye them in one solid colour. No designs or anything fancy.

Still not a bad start. Depending on how many different kinds of clothes there are, this "shortcoming" won't really weaken the feature but rather offer an opportunity to expand upon it in the future. It won't be long before we get Style Savvy-levels of customization options. Cue maniacal laughter.

Nope, Customization is 3DS exclusive, no fun allowed, dreams are crushed.

Iceshadow3317 October 4th, 2016 5:27 AM

So we were right to assume what we did.

However, I was not expecting it at all to be like the online gaming area like we had in HGSS. I just hope it is more active and we can do some stuff solo. Because some people are just too good. And hopefully, even if we lose, we will still get some coins.

It is also possible that the festival coins could just be for specific things. I haven't read the main site yet so there might be more news.

Only the 3DS knows how to be fashionable. Wait... But the first Style Savvy game was on the DS. And DPP were on the DS...
DPP remakes with character customization confirmed? I think that's what the evidence points to.

Iceshadow3317 October 4th, 2016 12:35 PM

I think that we will have normal shops like we did in Kalos, but we will not be able to get a few designs and some hair styles, as well as coloring outfits until after we do some stuff at the festival. We have outfit shops in the game, but this stuff seems to be different from the Festival.

I think the festival and festival coins may be a large extension of customization. I wouldn't be surprised if they help holiday events there as well because it said some events would come up for everyone playing the games to work together and complete. There might also be holiday outfits.

Sophicles seems to be the leader of the place, so we might have to finish his trial before we unlock the island.

It also seems like there is just Dyeing and Berry Dyeing. So we will probably have colors based on the berries in the game. We might also have some default dyes. If that is the case, then we will have a fairly large number of colors to work with. Although not all of the berries may be included.

I'm enamored with the fact you can radically change your character.
