Seiyuu

I'm curious, who here is a fan of seiyuu? Do you check out the cast list of seasonal anime for familiar names? Are you the type of person who watches an anime because X voices the main character? Are you more well versed Japanese seiyuu than say, American voice actors?

I consider myself a casual fan of Ari Ozawa and Rie Takahashi thanks to Chiyo and Megumin, but I'm not really that well-versed in seiyuu outside Love Live. I can recognize several names and voices (particularly if it's someone like Saori Hayami, Ayaneru or HanaKana), but that's about it.

I casually look out for seiyuu and know a couple of seiyuu by name. I don't actively look for shows that have the particular VA, but if I recognize them, I'll be like "that's [VA name] I can't believe they're in this series!" or "Jeez, I wouldn't have guessed it was them!" In terms of recognizing seiyuu, I only know female VAs (most of which I know from Kancolle) and couldn't care less about male VAs. I'm a fan of Ari Ozawa and passively looking out for shows with Shuu Uchida (new VA, amazing English, it was really hard to tell if her first language was English or Japanese).

I don't go crazy picking out who voices who but there are some seiyuu I can immediately notice when listening to characters speak. Well-known ones like Mamoru Miyano, Ishida Akira, Hiroshi Kamiya and the like are extremely easy to recognize. Iconic voices that can be caught easily across characters.

Don't watch dubs so I can't say I recognize many voices, but friend got me to at least notice seiyuu like Johnny Yong Bosch haha.

AAAAAWWWWW
YEEEEEEEEEEAAA!

My kind of thread =D

Seiyuus are the most important part of anime. And I would watch anything that has HanaKana. :D

As for the second question, I have literally 0 idea about American voice actors so... yea, definitely know more about seiyuus :P

Since we are technically talking about newer seiyuus, Ari Ozawa and Rie Takahashi are obvious picks but for me... Ten-chan, Amamiya Sora is absolutely TOP newer seiyuu =D She's definitely in my TOP 5 but actually... she's slowly closing on Saorin on 3rd place =D

I don't know anything about particular Seiyuu really - other than Satoshi worships HanaKana - but I have come to determine that the majority of Japanese voice actors are superior to their western counterparts.

Curious how it seems to be the other way around when it comes to live action though.

Off the top of my head I can name two seiyuu that debuted within the last decade (Ai Kayano, Haruka Tomatsu).

Japanese can't do Live Actions correctly so... yea =D

I'm actually not into seiyuu culture at all. The only ones I can name are Kana Hanazawa because of Satoshi's obsession with her and Aya Hirano because she voices Haruhi Suzumiya, had some scandal I think should never have evolved into a scandal, and because she's the artist behind most of the TMoHS OPs and EDs.

Now this I have to disagree with on some level. Though there is probably a talent gap with anime specifically, it's nowhere near as big as people make it out to be. A lot of the perceived talent gap is that Japanese voice acting seems to be directed to be deliberately exaggerated in all emotions, while Western anime-specific voice acting seems to be steered toward the "let's try to make this seem more normal since these characters aren't doing anything that's crazy" by its directors and script-writers where it tries to emulate live-action Hollywood dialogue for non-action scenes, which often results in something that sounds mailed-in much of the time. This works with a series with a more serious tone or a generally western setting like Cowboy Bebop, but not so well with a high school setting harem anime.

A lot of the West's talent gets paid better to voice for series using Western animation studios or for AAA video games rather than for lower budget anime dubbing.

It's worth noting that some of the best English dubs that I think exist belong to series that are intense all the way through (such as Gurren Lagann and Kill la Kill), since the writers, directors, and producers of the dub have no choice but to match that intensity if they want to do the animation justice.

I do think there's a huge gap in money spent since Japan has career VAs that can't exactly be cheap to employ as well as occasionally bringing in star power by paying a currently popular idol to voice a character. Meanwhile the West's anime studios have a few career VAs but have a bias toward hiring cheaper and less experienced talent.

Well... you can't :/ You switched H and K =D
However, Hana and Kanazawa are both existing words.
Hana is flower (the same kanji she has in her surname) and Kanazawa is a prefecture.

Whoops. Oh well. I even had Googled her name properly, too, just to make sure I was spelling it right, and then still transcribed it wrong. Besides, you still ended up knowing who I meant.

Also illustrates my point saying I'm not really into seiyuu culture.

Sure. You only need to pay copyright subscription fee which equals number of HanaKana's roles multiplied by her ad appearances and add the length of her Live Action movies.

You're probably the only person on Earth who knows the exact number of all those things.
