Home Theater PCs

Just curious, but is there anyone here with an HTPC setup? What is some of the equipment you have and/or use? How about software, especially when it comes to watching TV through use of a capture card?

Have any of y'all dived into the wonders of building a home theater PC setup before, whether for yourself or maybe someone else? Just curious!

Not much of a TV/movie person, so I never really bothered setting something up for myself.

Though, there was that one time when I had to set up a media PC for a customer during an internship. I had to do it, because at work I was the only one who actually knew stuff about Linux and for some odd reason that's what the customer wanted. Setting this thing up was such a mess, though; especially LIRC proved to be an epic fail doing whatever it pleased...

I guess me kinda? It's not an HTPC like you're thinking (running Kodi or Plex or anything) but my PC runs through my home theater system. I do use it for Netflix, Hulu, etc., but mostly it's set up like that so I can game on the big screen with the big sound.

I'd definitely be interested in building a dedicated HTPC in the future, maybe when I move into a new house. Not just for media but also for home automation. What I'm thinking of would really be more of a total "house brain."

That's a pretty cool setup and now it has me wondering how you have it set up! 8)

It's all pretty straightforward but here's an awkward amount of detail in case you were really that curious:

My PC sits next to my A/V cabinet which is all powered by my system power conditioner (I get storm outages and spikes a lot). I send HDMI out from my PC to my A/V receiver, which sends audio to my speakers (two monitors on the wall by the TV crossed at 80Hz with the sub along the side wall). Video signal goes to the TV on the wall. So I sit on my couch and use a wireless keyboard and mouse. Good for competitive gaming? Nope. Good for chillaxing? Yeppppp.

I was thinking of making a kodi/XBMC box for the TV but I've never seen the need.

I have a 73" DLP Television, so no. No I do not use my monitors for watching films.

HTPCs are designed for use with televisions rather than monitors, so you'd be set, even on that 73" slab!

Well, the PC I currently use doesn't have a BluRay Drive, so I doubt it'd be better than what I've been using now . . . Thanks for the tip, though!
