Worst parts of SM!
Just like the Favorite parts of Sun and Moon, I want you guys to tell us what were the worst parts of SM. Personally, I haven't gotten the game yet, and knowing that the Oddish line, and Solrock and Lunatone aren't obtainable ingame makes me turned off by the games already, even though it is kinda superficial for me to say, but like why wouldn't you add those Pokemon in the regional dex, like I cannot fathom how GF thought to add fossil Pokemon from other Gens, but not these Pokemon, that actually do make sense to be in this region, smh
|
I really hate the amount of cut-scenes in the games. Want to add more cinematic to the games? All the power to you Gamefreak! The majority of it looks fantastic! Just don't make it so I have a 5 minute cut scene, only to take like 10 steps forward and be in another cut scene! This happens multiple times throughout the game and it's extremely frustrating.
|
Quote:
For EV training, 6th Gen's horde battles were definitely superior compared to this. |
-I don't mind the large amount of cutscenes, but there is definitely a pacing problem at times.
-Clothing options feel really limited (for boys) and almost feel like a step back from X/Y. On the second island there's a town with a distinct Asian theme and a clothes shop with Asian attire in the window. Unfortunately, they sell the same stuff you find in the other two stores beforehand. -Felt like the plot twist didn't really have the impact it should have had. -Your characters lack of facial expressions. {XD} Your character's expression seems to only change during fully rendered cut scenes. Every other time he/she's got that dead stare going on. -Drampa is endgame only! Turtonator can be used way before Drampa, which is not cool. |
I wouldn't mind the over-abundance of cutscenes if they actually had narrative importance. Most of the time, the cutscenes are just there to force me to go left instead of right, and not because anything important is actually happening. It takes forever to be introduced to what few important chatacters there are, too, so I agree that there's a pacing problem that's brought about by the linearity and cutscenes.
SOS battles are not fun. These are the big things I've noticed based on where I am at the moment. Quote:

For me only the wild pokemon sos battles, everything else doesn't bother me.
|
Trainers having one or two Pokémon at most. I'm really surprised at how many of these trainers (including bosses) only seem to have a maximum of 2 Pokémon? I can't even remember the last time battling against someone who had 3 or more Pokémon. Maybe that's because I'm on the third island, but up to this point I definitely think there should be some trainers with more than 3 Pokémon, particularly the bosses and rivals..
|
A few things I dislike so far, but not enough to make me dislike the game!
- Not being able to press B to not learn moves is actually kind of annoying :( - SOS battles when you're trying to catch a Pokemon - Alola Pokemon being rarer than some Kanto 'mons! This is really annoying when you're trying to find new Pokemon :( Like why is Pichu 5%? And Jangmo-o? |
I hate how in the newer games you can't rechallenge trainers. It makes it difficult to train, especially before the elite four
|

I personally love the increased cutscenes, makes the game feel more alive.
Can't say I dislike much since SM is already near perfect to me. What would've made it perfect though would be the ability to toss Pokéballs at Pokémon in multi battles, that's part of why the SOS feature can be so annoying. I wish we could target one Pokémon to capture it rather than knocking out one of them before we can catch the remaining. Also really miss the PSS. ]; It's kind of annoying to go into the Festival Plaza for trading all the time. Not to mention I want to see which of my friends are online quickly on the bottom screen, as well as passersby etc. |
Basically the competitive scene. Game Freak's gone a little too far trying to balance things. Wanna stop those Pranksters? Wanna revenge kill the opponent without touching them? Wanna be immune to everything but sleep? How about a Toxic-abusing Steel wall-breaker?
Yup, even with all the buffs they gave to once terrible Pokémon, the metagame is going to be screwed over. Maybe. |
The majority of the cutscenes were really just...unnecessary or went on longer than they should be. Especially at the beginning, gosh, it was so darn slow. And the pacing as well, like they should've spread out the placements of the cutscenes. SOS battles being practically unlimited like wild Pokemon should only be able to call for help once (idk why a pokemon would come to the aid of another pokemon who can't defeat a trainer in a 2v1 lmao). Clicking A to open doors.
That's really about it tbh. S&M don't actually have much flaws and granted, the aforementioned points are probably just nitpicks from a fan with sky-high expectations. XD |
I dislike the Battle Royal Dome prices. It's just.. everything no! And I need the Destiny Knot + EV training items from there so I can start breeding!
Everything else I'm pretty okay with. |

That everyone is way further in the game than I am and I don't want to spoil too much so I can't really participate so much in the forums at the moment.
Like, I'm just challenging the first trial and people are all "So how much of the postgame have you done already?" |
It loads very slowly on my 3DS XL, not that I am complaining too much, but.
And the Ultra Beasts were too weak, they aren't even hard to find/ captured. |
There's hardly anywhere to train post-game. I prefer places where I can just go in with 1 very strong pokemon, carrying 5 others in tow to help complete my pokedex. Sure there's the elite four, but there really isn't anything strong enough to take on the whole league like Mega Ray. I prefer something like Cafe Le Wow but the only cafe in SM is restricted to once a day. The only other alternative is grinding on Poni Island, which is tedious.
|
Yeah, the lag is pretty bad at times. My poor 3DS can barely handle double and Totem battles, so I don't even want to give the Battle Royal a shot.
It's also pretty disappointing how limited the Battle Tree Trainers were; the PWT got our expectations too high. Also: Spoiler:
|
Gen 7 is fantastic so far, but like every generation it has it's flaws here are mine.
The return of the fifth generation exp system, uh Game Freak why bring back one of the most annoying and painful mechanics of gen 5 back? This makes grinding more a chore now. Apparently the nursery does not raise Pokemon levels anymore. Jeez Game Freak are you trying to make completing the Pokedex even more painful with the return of the fifth gen EXP system? Thunder Wave has 90 accuracy now, why? The PSS and Dexnav are now gone. |

My only real complaint is below
http://statici.behindthevoiceactors.com/behindthevoiceactors/_img/chars/roadblock-gi-joe-7.jpg |
Even though I haven't even played the game yet myself, I could say that my disappointment was surprisingly high when I found out about Cosmog's second evolutions. I just hoped that it'd be its own cute pokemon! ~_~ Difficult to explain.
|
Well at only around 20 or so minutes into the game, I have to say the one thing I don't like so far is how damn long the beginning is. I had to restart the game because my starter had a fucking +attack nature and my last save point was like back when you got out of the house. It just took so fucking long until I managed to get a starter without a bad nature. The whole 'let's see if the starter picks you' thing....what's the deal for that?
|
The PokéDex, without a doubt
Not only is it always on the bottom screen, it then decides to throw four different screens just to tell you about the pokémon every time you catch or evolve one Get rid of the "pokémon's data will be added to the pokédex" placeholder screen, merge the pokémon's information screen onto the bottom of the "registered" screen and remove the percentage tally overlay Other then that, it's a solid game |
I'm not too far into the game but the roadblocks are annoying.
I had some random kid say something along the lines of 'Come Back Later me and Stoutland are looking for every last thing'. You need to block the road for that? |
Quote:
|
Quote:
Some roadblocks were reasonably creative though like the Psyduck who have headaches in Sinnoh which has a little story significance. |
SOS battles. I just wish we could throw a pokeball even when there are two pokemon on the field. I had an agonizingly long battle trying to catch a stupid cleffa, who kept calling for help every turn and kept using sweet kiss. Since I didnt want to deal with a confused pokemon, I kept switching out and attacking when I could, only to deal with yet another cleffa and another confusion.
Really miss 6th gen EV training. Granted, I don't worry about EVs and natures until post game, but I just don't like the methods available. Seems too tedious. The reason why I got into breeding and EV training was because it was so easy to grasp in 6th gen. I think Im just going to go ahead with my original plan of breeding competitive pokemon and EV training them in ORAS, then bring them over. |
I'm really liking the game so far, but the one thing that bugs me out of everything is the lack of things to do in Pokémon Refresh. Contrary to popular opinion, I actually really enjoyed the mini games, and i miss making faces at your Pokémon and seeing how they react. But at least they made it easier to get 5 hearts, and the fact that you can heal/care for your Pokémon is a really nice touch.
Besides that, I don't have anything to complain about. |
- Pokerides severe lack in variation between generations over half of them are gen 1 (stop trying to please the genwunners GF they won't play your game regardless)
- The pokedex information and "registered" cutscenes are a bit on the long side which makes getting a pokemon with the right nature annoying (Zygarde took me nearly 2 hours) - The occasional difficulty spike forcing you to train. (while I enjoy the challange sometimes the difficulty shift between trainers and kahuna / totem pokemon is pretty big) I don't really mind SOS battles so far though... |

I dont like the tapu's and how there are so many ultra beasts. It makes competition rather UB-tapu smothered, as everyone is playing at least one of each- if not two. I personally am going to be using two UB pokes and a tapu for competition after im done ev training the silly things. tapu koku is too strong imo.
|
I felt like I was told how to play the game instead of just letting me play. I wanna go one way but I have to follow the map to do anything.
That and the countless amounts of cut scenes that you have to watch, Just let me play. |
-All the routes/areas/zones/islands feel the same
-Little variation of Pokemon from Standard Encounters -SOS battles -The game has been 90% cutscenes, 10% gameplay -I just got to the 4th island and so far nothing has been close to difficult, enemy trainers have 1-2 weak Pokemon -Every trial is extremely simple and feels like little effort was put into them -Player avatar feels emotionless and the choice of clothing is a step back from XY -Lack of PSS is also a huge step backwards I'm mostly disappointed in the fact that there is very little to explore. Towns are small, routes are small, and there is very little side-content. Not one cave so far. In my favorite pair of games, BW2, it felt like there were endless things to discover and places to explore. |
Definitely the loading time. It feels slow, like in Diamond and Pearl
|
Having finished the game, I've found another detail that bothers me.
The lack of focus on the new Alolan pokemon. Sure, you could pick up all these new Alolan 'mons, but in the same route, you've got four different pokemon that are probably faster and stronger than the new ones. I'd have liked S&M more had they been a little stricter with pokemon allocation and stuck with pokemon from Gens V and VI without using any from the first four. |
Now that I've beat the game I can say with more certainty than before that there are way too many cutscenes. Even when the plot actually starts to happen--which takes until about the third island, a very long time--there are more cutscenes than are necessary.
The games are short. I finished with a playtime similar to X, but X had way less cutscenes. A lot of the playtime is taken up by cutscenes, not actually playing. The region is very small and routes are incredibly straightforward. Little exploration is available, which is disappointing since it's supposed to be this "vast, natural paradise." The hyper-linearity does not help this. It also features the problem XY had, which is that most of what few new Pokémon there are are incredibly rare, making the lack of new Pokémon even more obvious. I get that certain features are gonna get the axe, that kind of thing is inevitable. But no PSS, and no StreetPass (which would have been great with the Festival Plaza!) are direct downgrades to what gen 6 provided. SOS battles are still, in my opinion, not fun, and also a direct downgrade to hordes and the DexNav in terms of shiny hunting, looking for Pokémon with good IVs, and EV training. The fact that hordes are likely gone simply due to the awful lag the game experiences makes this even worse (evidenced by the battle against "five" Team Skull Grunts at once). Some plot disappointments: Spoiler:
The only thing I haven't gotten to yet is the Battle Tree, but I'm kinda worried that, considering how badly the game lags, I won't really enjoy the main draw of the facility because multi-battles are just... not so fun with that awful lag. I'd still say these games are really good and among my top 5 favorites, but I can't bring myself to think of them as better than gen 5, HGSS, or even Platinum with how they handled most of the story elements and amount of content. |
Regarding the story I would say Lusamine was the hands down worst part of the story. She's basically bad for the sake of being bad and wants to destroy alola for well...the sake of destroying alola. Also wtf is this plot line with Gladion and Lillie being her kids. She looks like she is freaking 6-8 years older than them and the dialogue between her and the two is horrifically written.
My other main gripe was the story was the fact that it was one of the most linear Pokémon games I ever played (if not the most linear). I know this horse has already been beaten well beyond death but I just had to include it, I really was hoping S/M would move away from linearity and it went in the wrong direction. You can't walk freaking 40 feet before someone interrupts the gameplay with a cutscenes and shoves you in the right direction. Also it doesn't feel like you actually have a choice of going to certain places before others like you could in other Pokémon games. If you took data from every players playthrough of S/M and listed all the game locations from first one they went to to last one they went to, almost everyone's lists would be identical. Regarding gameplay. The routes suck, I'm just going to come out and say it. They are so small, they are so linear, and they rarely have more than 4 trainers. Graphically they are amazing and a pleasure to explore but I feel like there was a lot of wasted potential on these routes. It's hard to distinguish any of the routes from each other and they are largely forgettable. My other main problem with the gameplay is the game is just too damn short. With 60% of the game being cutscenes i felt like I had actually played for 1/5th as much as I usually had in a Pokémon game. The difficulty curve and level curve are massively improved over X/Y but I just wish there was more content. Overall I love this game and I'm going to play it for hours on end, but it is far from perfect |
I've only put on about 4 hours on the game's time odometer, and I've found too many issues for me to enjoy this game. Among them are:
To sum it up, Sun and Moon are the Windows 8 of the Pokémon franchise. Changing too many things just for the sake of changing rather than doing so out of absolute necessity (like NASCAR has done with its stupid "Chase for the Championship" playoff implemented on their main three racing series (Cup, Xfinity, and Trucks).) Bottom line - you know the old saying: If it ain't broke, don't fix it! |
SOS Battles...when I'm trying to catch in game.
Post-game I've got it all planned out, False Swipe and TWave to stop them calling for help. But when I was just starting out it was incredibly frustrating trying to catch only to see another Pokemon appear. |
Way too many cut scenes... should have more pokemon (in game).... storys wack..... and the trials are lame thoses are all i can think of right now but i know theres more i can think of thats wrong with this game
|
I can definitely understand all the posts pointing out the overabundance of cutscenes. I like how this game's story is pretty much rivaling Black & White quality-wise, having so many cutscenes made me feel like I didn't spend much time even actually playing.
|
The complete disappearance of all field moves. I get that they wanted to remove the HMs, but things like "Dig" and "Teleport" were quite useful, why dd they take that away too?
I'll join in on the amount of cutscenes. I'll add to that the impossibility of skipping them. I'd like to skip cutscenes when I'm playing the second version, please! The linearity... yeah, it is pretty bad in that regard. I think that if they really wanted to make a story linear like this, they should have added some extra optional locations here and there (for instance, imagine if your next destination is the end of the route you're on, but on the way there is an entrance to a completely optional forest, inhabited by some Pokémon that are exclusive to it, a few trainers and a TM at the end of it... that wouldn't be much but still would be a welcome addition) . The SOS Battles are a cool concept, IMHO, but I think it would be better if wild Pokémon actually lost their turn when they call for help. |
I haven't gotten too far in the game yet (I just got it yesterday) but I thought the very beginning was way too drawn out. This was honestly the first time I fell asleep playing a new game. Hopefully it gets more exciting as the game progresses.
|
Easily the fireworks at the end.
|
The worst part in the game for me so far Is the Aether Foundation cutscene So long and boring and it went well over 10 minutes or so Since you had to fight that ??? Ultra beast who ended up fleeing in the end After that the worst part of the game started You did not even get to explore that place after the Cutscene you get forced to a new area Just like that! I was seriously pissed at this part that i just saved and quitted Playing the game for the rest of the day.
|
After playing for about 50 hours now, these are the things I am hating.
~ The Pokedex, it tells you where version exclusive pokemon are and they aren't even in your game. ~ There is too many screens for the Pokedex. ~ I hate that have to go to Festival Plaza just to get to the GTS and Wonder Trade. ~ I hate that the map doesn't really help at all within certain zones. ~ I really hate that wild pokemon can spam calling an ally. It makes it extremely annoying to catch wild pokemon. ~ I hate most of the music ~ I hate that they have made fishing so damn annoying. I don't want a damn magikarp when I am trying to catch other pokemon. They should have never made 1 Fishing Rod only. ~ I hate the fact that we can't fish anywhere and we have to go to specific spots. ~ I hate that some pokemon can only pop up in 1 patch on a route. ~ I hate that most of the new pokemon are so damn rare. ~ I hate that other pokemon are rare as hell and will rarely pop up and then you have one pokemon that comes up all the time. ~ I hate that there is no national dex until probably later on. If there isn't in the game, then they are making us get Pokemon Bank which is a huge no no. ~ I loved the cutscenes, but some were way too long and slow. ~ I hate that they removed Hoard Battles. ~ I hate that clothing in normal shops are so damn expensive. ~ I hate that some evolutions are restricted until so late in the game. ~ I hate that most of the basic moves seem to do more damage than a Z-Move at times, even when you are using the same move as a base. Example: Water Z only did like 1/3 the damage of a normal Scald when I was using Scald as a base. ~ I hate that PSS was removed, I can't tell what friends are on or who isn't. |
The fact that Stufful is everywhere in the overworld yet when you try to catch a wild one there is only A FIVE PERCENT ENCOUNTER RATE??? Why make them everywhere, assuming that they are common, and make them one of the hardest Pokemon to find in the game?! It took me two hours to find mine ;__;
|

only 1 thing bothred me really that is the lack of grinding spots for post game, all other complaints is just petty things compared to that huge problem , it just makes it so much harder to get to lv 100 which you need to be to use bottle caps

Uhh mele whatever island. The whole island was like a giant tutorial. I felt like I was being stopped every 10 steps and that made me feel SMOTHERED. Also I thought the clothing was kinda lame this time around. Very simple designs available in all the same colors. For that fact alone only the shoes were really worth while. Also no way to try on clothes before buying?? Besides that not much else. I enjoyed the game a lot
|
The worst I found so far was that how frustrating is to catch Tapu Koko. You have to battle it during the cut scene when you beat the league and before the credits. I had to use a synchronize Pokemon in front line against Kukui. Well I managed to catch the other legendaries without the master ball including Necromza and especially Solgaleo which was easier to catch. I'm glad that they made Solgaleo less frustrating so you that I can organize my team for it.
Also the Ultra Beasts are smart when they are in the wild. Buzzwole only used attacking moves and Xuritree keep using Discharge while Special Attack is up and used Power Whip on Ground types. |
Gen 1 pandering. In Lush Jungle it took me nearly half an hour to find a Bounsweet with Paras and Pinsir appearing everywhere. Even more inexplicable is that Bounsweet is a common encounter.
In general Kanto mons seem much easier to run into than newer Pokemon. And on that note having seen the Alola dex how did Pinsir and the Spearow line got in the game and the fan favourite like the Gardevoir line didn't? Is it because they are Gen 1? And why can you fly on a Charizard but not catch the line. Alola isn't exactly short of bird Pokemon. |
Quote:
|
I was expecting the game to be more difficult. I was expecting to get stuck somewhere and having no idea how to proceed. It's fun and annoying and fun and annoying but at least you get to know the ares better when you actually have to explore it yourself to find out what you have to do next! But it was so easy because you were constantly told exactly where to go.
And the cutscenes were way too long and there were too many of them. The cutscenes took me away from what I wanted to do at certain places. The beginning was too long, really... You get this awesome new game and can't wait to go and explore and battle... I also don't like how you have to press A to walk through doors! And fishing is boring. Oh, and how you get your party healed at random times! I used too many revives and potions for nothing. >:( Nevertheless I love the game! |
The lack of decent post game grinding is a real issue (X and Y had the battle chateau which was a perfect grinding mechanism AS/OR had trainers eyes).
Doing the Dex is going to be a bore now =p |
What annoyed you the most in S/M?
Just as the title suggests, what annoyed you the most in S/M?
For myself - Too much damn water The Elite 4 was a let down and seemed like a cop out adding most of the Kahunas instead of forming some original E4 that could of had some ties to Alola's past |
The most annoying thing in SM? Lillie. Rather the whole storyline and/or plotline. It was a gigantic troll into my pokemon journey. I keep asking myself why I keep getting involved in someone else's family affairs.
|
What annoyed me the whole time was that the Player Character had one expression through the whole game. With all the other characters, they had very expressive faces, but the main character was just, well this...

A lot of my disappointments are honestly from getting my hopes up a little too high. I'm pretty disappointed that the Ultra Beasts really don't do much in the plot, other than kind of Nilhelgo, UB-02 showed up for one cutscene and then I guess got beat by Tapu Koko and went back to it's world? It's weird, I thought they were all going to invade Alola and you had to travel around beating them all. (also yes I know there's an Ultra Beast related Post-Game, I just haven't gotten to it yet).
Why can you only battle Mallow in Moon? Like really? S.O.S battles can be really frustrating sometimes, even if it is a neat concept. Just let me throw a Poke Ball dammit! The pacing with the Aether Foundation was really weird to me, and so was Gladion's development. One second he hated your guts and the next he was your bro and brought you to fight Aether with him? And they made it a little TOO obvious that Aether was mostly evil. Like we all speculated that before, but literally when you first boot up the game you see them with evil grins chasing down Lillie, seems kind of lame to me that they didn't even attempt to hide it. Overall though? It's mostly just nitpicking. Sun and Moon are fantastic games, a much needed improvement over Generation 6. |
The online features are extremely lacking. The entire concept of the Festival Plaza is unnecessarily complicated. The interface isn't as intuitive or readily accessible as XY's, which was simple and easy to use. Trawling through a guest list just to find someone on my friend list I want to trade with is awkward, and the constant unusual button presses required to get anywhere...it's the small things. It just feels like a step backwards. It's all been slapped together haphazardly and it would have been so much better if they had kept everything new that the plaza has to offer from the core online trading/battling features, in my opinion.
Customisation feels like a step backward in this generation too. As I said in another thread, they could have done so much more with this - QR codes to share custom shirt designs, a wider variety of clothing, etc. This felt like it had only been included due to ORAS backlash, as a last minute thing. I do have some issues with the Pokedex being skewed in favour of Kanto Pokemon, but that's only because the games aren't currently compatible with Pokemon Bank. That should fix that problem, but until that DOES happen, it's quite off-putting. On a minor note, the soundtrack is pretty awful this time around as well. I've played most of the game on mute so far. After a resounding tribal chorus at the beginning that really gave the game a wonderful tropical feeling, it's devolved into a horrible mish-mash of techno and drum beats with no rhythm to speak of. |
Quote:
I actually love the game, my only gripe is that "call for help" system |
I felt the start of the game was really slow, but that's kinda understandable. I play on an old 3DS and the frameframerate is just awful in some battles which is kinda annoying :/
|
Little things, namely:
The inability to rematch trainers The inability to SIT DOWN (WHYYY??) The inability to encounter Hordes The inability to have your player turn their head to signs as you pass them I'll let you know if there's anymore once I've complete the main story... otherwise I LOVE the games |
I honestly love these games, easily one of my favourites, however my gripes are:
- The cutscenes, while great (I am a Final Fantasy fanboy so cutscenes aren't a bad thing to me), were a bit too long and the story didn't quite need so many to facilitate it. I feel like having less would give the story more gravitas than just OOH cutscene because we can happy 20th anniversary look at how far we've come. - I like Lusamine a lot more than *shudder* Lysandre, but her motives behind her actions were... muddy, to say the least. Without going into spoilers, her reasons needed to be a little clearer. -Post-game wise, I LOATHE the vicious cycle needed to get the items essential for breeding and EV training. Oh you want the power items and destiny knot TOO BAD WE'RE ONLY GIVING 1BP AT A TIME BECAUSE YOU DON'T HAVE A STRONG ENOUGH TEAM TO WIN. -Festival Plaza is nowhere near as intuitive as the PSS. I like the minigames but a way to keep online functions on permanently would be much easier. Other than these, and they really are nitpicky, I think this game is really solid and the pros heavily outweigh the cons. |

There's only one of each Apricorn Ball in the game.
I've lucked out on obtaining Moon Ball Vulpix and Rockruff so I've still got mine to use on a Pokemon but it's still infuriating. |
There aren't many things to dislike about Pokemon Sun and Moon, they are fantastically crafted games and the story is one of the best, if not the best!
However it does come with it's downfalls so if I were to select some things that made my experience a little less interesting then here they are! - No Dexnav/Equivalent, PSS, Super Training etc. - S.O.S. Encounter spam (like, it will happen even after knocking out the helping Pokemon) - Framerate Issues on the older 3DS - New UI is great! But it causes for common mis-clicks, and these are just plain old annoying - Some map navigation (Haina Desert comes to mind...) I mean, apart from those nitpicks, the games are really amazing games, I couldn't praise them enough! Even though I miss the PSS, it doesn't mean I'd rather it over the Festival Plaza. I see many people a bit bummed out about it, but it doesn't take long to get used to it - I understand it can be very annoying having to actually leave the game to do online stuff but I'm fine with it, I'd rather experience new ways of doing old things rather have the same old thing in a row ^^' - I guess that's just me, haha. Anyways, that's my little list! |

I've not finished the game yet, but so far my least favorite aspect by far is the linearity forced upon you. I don't like the mini-map always showing me where I need to go next. The games are already linear enough, there's no need to take it to the next level and tell me where to go every step of the journey.
I've found Rotom pretty annoying, too. I wish there was a way to turn off his commentary. |

Basically my main gripes with the game rn are:
-game lags whenever there's more than two Pokemon on the screen -some of the odd/poor choices regarding trainer customization -game in some ways feels short/the region feels small -Loss of the infinite loop for breeding that we had in ORAS. I could possibly live with not having an infinite loop if they at least gave us something like the long straight routes in front of the Unova and Kalos daycares, but nope, the area near the nursery sucks for that. -removal of B2W2-esque move tutors again There's the matter of the story but idk how I feel about it exactly. I think it's one of the better ones in the series but I'm still waiting for them to give us something more. Sun/Moon did some good stuff too though. |
Personally, I think Sun and Moon are the best Pokemon games to date, definitely a MASSIVE improvement over X/Y, which I felt were very weak. There's not much I would change except a few things. First listing off my four major problems with the game:
1. Have a better selection of Pokemon Before I get into this point, I am not talking about the new Pokemon that were introduced in this generation, I'm specifically talking about the older, returning Pokemon that appear in the region and how their selection just feels so limited. When it was stated that Alola's Dex would be divided into four dexes like how the Kalos Dex was divided into three (with 150 Pokemon each), I was really excited because that meant the Alola Dex was going to be HUUUUUUGE. The game came out and I felt rather disappointed in the selection of Pokemon. There's only 300 Pokemon in the Alola Dex compared to the 450 that Kalos had, and there's very few National Dex Pokemon available in the post-game other than the very few that are available through the Island Scan. I mean, I have to wait until Pokebank updates in January to get my two favorite Pokemon (Floatzel and Mienshao) since both are unobtainable in-game. It also doesn't help that half the areas have the exact same Pokemon as the last area. Almost every route has Pikipek and Yungoos or their evolutions, almost every cave has Zubat and Diglett or their evolutions. It just feels so repetitive to see the same Pokemon over and over again in each area, unlike in Kalos where every area was diverse in it's wildlife and had something new to offer, while in Alola, you're lucky to encounter TWO Pokemon that weren't in the previous area and aren't the evolutions of a Pokemon that appeared in a previous area. It reminds me of Kanto and how unvaried most of the areas in that region were. I'd rather have a Pokedex of at least 400 Pokemon, 100 or so for each island rather than how uneven each island's Pokedex is. Also bothered by how almost 75% of the old Pokemon are from Gen 1, which I already think is over-exposed, which brings us to my next point... 2. The Alolan forms feel under-utilized as a concept When the concept was revealed, they made a huge deal about it, regional variants of older Pokemon, something you didn't see before even in places like Unova and Kalos which, while far from the other regions, have Pokemon from previous generations available. In Alola, there are more old Pokemon than new ones, which is unsurprising, but only 10 evolution lines have regional variants, and every single one of them is a Gen 1 Pokemon, which really bothers me as someone who's least favorite generation is Gen 1 because of how over-exposed I think it is and how I am not nearly as nostalgic for it as I am later generations because I didn't grow up with Gen 1 during it's original run. It doesn't help that there are even LESS regional variant forms than there were Mega Evolutions in X/Y, and it kind of makes me feel like the concept was wasted and under-utilized by showing not only more favoritism for Gen 1 over the 5 other generations they could have given regional variants to. Heck, I wouldn't mind Alolan Lucario even though I think Lucario is also pretty over-exposed, but hey, it's at least something that isn't Gen 1. The only Alolan form I really even like is Vulpix/Ninetales, mostly because it's one of my favorite Pokemon already, and also because it's ice typing makes the most sense in a real world basis since they're supposed to be invoking arctic foxes (that and I think they're so darn adorable). As for the rest of them, Alolan Marowak is at least a great callback to the Ghost Marowak from Gen 1, and as for Alolan Raichu... well, at least they did something with Raichu after giving it's pre-evos so much attention. The rest just feel unnecessary or make no sense. Alolan Sandshrew/Sandslash make no sense as Ice types (since the creatures that they are based on don't even have relatives that live in cold climates since they are based on animals that live in the desert and warm climates, that and Alolan Sandslash's Ice/Steel typing gives it 4x weaknesses to the two most commonly offensively-used types). Alolan Ratatta and Meowth are pure Dark types for the sake of having Gen 1 Pokemon as Dark types, Alolan Exeggutor is a joke that is only part-Dragon type because of an obscure plant reference (the plant family "Dracaena" or "Dragon Tree"), and Alolan Grimer/Muk has no point in existing at all. Also, some of them are quite hypocritical, since we have Alolan Raichu, Exeggutor and Marowak, but no Alolan Pikachu, Exeggcute or Cubone, which makes it feel like we can still get the normal variants but can't. 3. No new Mega Evolutions This is a bit of a nitpick, but I am just bothered by the fact that they didn't continue this concept at all. Heck, very few Pokemon from Gen 4 and almost NO Pokemon from Gen 5 (the generation with the MOST new Pokemon introduced) and Gen 6 had them at all, so I was expecting this time around, they added some new ones. I understand limiting them to the post-game, but even then, they should at least have some new ones. Also doesn't help that not all the Megas are even obtainable in the game. I've wanted Mega Floatzel and Mega Mienshao since Gen 6 started, and now I feel like I might never get them. 4. The bleeping lag This was a problem for me as well because I have only the oldest 3DS model (which I got the launch year) and it makes me feel like my 3DS system is really slow, especially when starting up the game and I have to wait more than half a minute for the start screen to come up. I don't think I can go any further with this because everyone here has already talked about it. Other than those 4 major points, there's nothing else I feel like needs to be changed or could have been done better, other than a few minor nitpicks: - The lack of facial expressions for the player character, he/she just smiles all the time when all the other characters in a scene are angry or shocked or showing other emotions, and the player is just all :) like they're wanting to watch the world burn. This has become a meme in some ways. Only in ONE SCENE does the player even express something that isn't constant smiling. Heck, the silent protagonist in Dragon Ball Xenoverse is more expressive. - Too many cut-scenes 7.8/10 - This is a bit of a personal nitpick, though I kind of found the Pokemon League in this game to be a bit underwhelming compared to previous leagues, even though the Elite Four were the hardest I've fought since Gen 4, I just felt the build-up to it didn't make it as impressive in presentation. Also the way the Alola League itself looks as a crystaline cave feels like a downgrade from the massive extravagant palace the Kalos League was. I know that by an in-universe context, the Alola League is brand new and they were probably working on a lower budget than the Unova and Kalos Leagues did, but I just felt it could have looked better. |

I bought a New Nintendo 3DS about three weeks ago, and I get lag when I am in SOS battles. It is definitely a demanding battle system this time :(
For me: 1. Not being able to press "B" to skip learning a move is slightly irritating. 2. SOS battles can be irritating if you don't want them to occur. 3. I find it difficult to get money in this game, even with the Amulet Coin. 4. The trainer battles are really easy because they usually have only a couple of Pokemon. 5. Team Skull, while providing comic relief, is the worst team to come out of Pokemon since DPPt's horror squad. 6. There was never an actual tutorial regarding how to use the online features. It was not evident that accessing Festival Plaza was necessary. I needed third-party resources to figure out how to make the online work. |
Those pesky SOS battles :(
Super annoying. Other than that, nothing really bothers me. |
All the cut scenes are terrible. especially on low battery...
I was really close to put the game aside after it took me nearly 2 h to get going.)compare that to max 1/2 h in gen 1-3 and even then so often interrupted by cutscenes and getting told where exactly to go etc. I know other games had some ideas where to go but they didnt rub it in all the time and they still had somewhat of a choice(like rby once past lt surge it was your choice) or in gsc once past ecruteak was up to you as well and you get really hold by the hand in this one.. At some point it nearly felt like those games that have merely cut scenes and you move a character from cut scene to cutscene without any actual independent movement. Also I so miss bicycles, Bicycles are my fav item and I love zooming around with it, not such a fan of riding the pokemon(except sharpedo) but the gear you put on is pretty ugly. Also I havent encountered yet any electro pokemon... and I really miss just zapping the birds with some electricity another thing, this game it would be so easy to get a whole bird team, fire bird here, grass bird starter, water birds, and all the other birds so many birds lol. I don't like having to push A for going through doors, I guess they made it so they can have more doors that one can't walk through.. and related to that , there are so many unaccessible places ... I also agree with the assertion further above about the PC come on show some more variety, Hau at least doesnt smile all the time, but the PC just stands there with that friendly greeter smile . I have got a newN3DS and don't have laggy battles.. I am a casual player , I think the game is too easy this one must be easiest so far, I think the only NPC with 6 characters as far as I have come in the game was the head of aether foundation. I havent even been close to being beaten |
The thing that annoys me the most is the old EXP mechanics combined with the new EXP share. I actually like the old EXP mechanics, makes it harder for strong Pokemon to overlevel and encourages the use of the other Pokemon in your team. But the EXP share just sucks for it. Sure it's fine during the main story but post game it's absolutely horrible to train weaker Mons with it. Say you use a level 100 Mon in the first party slot and a lot of low leved Mons you want to train in the rest of the slots. In XY and ORAS you could fight some level 50ish Pokemon that way and get lots of EXP for your low leveled Mons. But with the old EXP mechanics my main fighter will get greatly reduced EXP due to the level difference and therefore all the other Mons in my party will get even less from the EXP-Share. I wish they would have accommodated the EXP-Share for that and make the level ratio have influence on the EXP gained AFTER they have been split by the EXP-Share. Now you have to do the old "Pokemon to train in first slot and switch out for strong one on battle start" again which was the sole thing the EXP-Share was made for to get rid of.

Now that I've played a little more I can now say that Festival Plaza is trash compared to PSS. It's really hard to make trades when it doesn't tell you when someone else is requesting a trade and it sucks that you have to reconnect to Wifi every time you go back to the Festival Plaza and that you have to wait in the Plaza when you're waiting for someone to connect. The great thing about PSS was that you could do whatever you want while you wait for the request and now everything is stalled...
|
As much as I love Festival Plaza I have to admit that for connectivity purposes, the PSS is leagues better. If they absolutely had to take this approach, at least make there be a "Friends List" in addition to the "Guest List" and "VIP List." Even when my friend and I are both online, we may not even appear in each other's Plaza! And since I mostly use the VIP function to keep players who have Facilities I may want in the future, I don't assign all my friends list friends as VIPs. And I know I said this before but it really does need StreetPass connectivity. XY gave you PokéMiles for each player you passed; SM should have given you FC based on the number of people you passed.

Alright! 100 percented pretty much everything minus the Battle Tree, so here's my main complaints. I will say overall, this is probably the best Pokemon game to date. There are some problems, but they are relatively minor in the grand retrospect of things. These are probably where the games have the most problems for me:
Main Problems: S.O.S Battles Could Have Been Implemented Better: I understand what they were going for in this game and it works....some of the time. First of all, in my honest opinion, S.O.S battles should only occur with Totems or with the Adrenaline Orb. In all other instances, there should be a rare chance of encountering a chain. That way, it isn't annoying when I try to catch a Pokemon, and it keeps calling for help every five seconds. Also, Pokemon with Sweet Kiss/Sing cough Cleffa cough should NEVER be allowed to call for help. EVER. (My god, trying to get a Clefairy was super annoying) Not to mention that some Pokemon for this generation such as Mareanie can ONLY BE OBTAINED BY THIS METHOD. Regardless if the Pokemon is good or not, it did not make up for the hell many others and I had to go through.(Other than giving perfect IVs/Shinies). Speaking of which.... The Low Encounter Rate Is Bullshit: Why the hell are Pokemon NATIVE TO THE REGION THEY POPULATE RARE?!!! This makes no sense and made it even harder to get the Pokemon I wanted. Almost a majority of the 7th gen Pokemon that are good either have to be obtained from S.O.S mechanics, have a 8% catch rate or less, or have some b.s. mechanic that makes it even harder to find. Want to use a Stufful or Mimikyu? Good luck with that 5% encounter rate. God forbid you want a Pokemon that appears with a 1% encounter rate during a certain time of day. You will NEVER find it. I was lucky to get Mimikyu after a couple of tries, but Pokemon like Stufful and Grubbin took me hours. Unless it is a special legendary or pseudo, no regular Pokemon should have a encounter rate LOWER THAN 5%. It should not take me hours to find an Alolan Pokemon native to that region. I figured most of the Pokemon were made this way to make them more "satisfactory" to find, but all it proved was that GTS could actually be...shudders* " a better option" to get the Pokemon you want. As for Alolan Forms.... I agree with a lot of people here when saying that... Alolan Forms Are A Missed Opportunity: To be fair, a majority of Alolan forms are viable such Ninetales, Raichu, Maworak, Muk and even Persian (with fur Coat) or Dugtrio, but other than that, they are either worse like Raticate or simply stink because their base stats don't change at all. (looking at you Geodude). Seriously, why the hell make the form if you are not going to change anything about it to make it better? Also, having these forms limited to only Kanto was a terrible decision. There are so many other Pokemon like Sunflora, or Mothim, or even Paras, that could benefit from a form like this, but nope, they are left in the dust. I get it's the 20th Anniversary, but there could have been so much more that we unfortunately didn't get. As For More Pokemon Related Problems: A lot of the 7th gen Pokemon are too slow for their own good: I understand they did this to give the game a slow type of feel and I give credit where it's due, it works for almost all the Pokemon. Almost. Because there are Pokemon from other regions in this game which are faster than the Pokemon you have, it becomes HARDER to make decent team purely made of Alolan Pokemon that won't get hit first turn. It also doesn't help that Pokemon like Lurantis would be so much better if they had some more speed given to them, but I'll digress. The main reason why this is a problem is because it does discourage you from using some Alolan Pokemon as there are so many other Pokemon from other regions in the game you could use instead. Festival Plaza Kinda Sucks?...: I don't want to say it's terrible, it's very cool in concept and for the most part it never annoyed me too much, but if you were to ask me which I liked better, it's P.S.S. I get they wanted something fresh, but it is so annoying trying to get friends on my friend list, I just gave up. Having a list is cool, but needing to have your friend BE ONLINE and needing to talk to them to register them as "V.I.P" is pure annoyance. I will give credit that GTS finally has a LEGENDARY NON-INCLUSION SYSTEM, but it doesn't make up for the layout being crappy. Also, trying to get higher ranked facilities are a pain. They could have easily used the template from Black and White 2's Passerby Mall thing as it is easily so much better. U.B's. Don't Appear Until Post Game: This is so disappointing. I was so hyped to see some inclusion of UB's in the story and it only happened like once. Let me explain. Nihilego plays a huge role in the story and that's cool, it's the first U.B we see, but when we see the other Ultra Beasts appear, they only show them once, and then cut away.... and not have any semblance of closure until post game. I thought we were supposed to go around and catch the U.B's after Lusamine released them, but no, it's implied the Kahuna's took care of them? What? They could of at least shown us something to make up for that absense before POST GAME. ( And no, Hala being there when it happens doesn't cut it. They never show him do anything after that.) And even then, after the Looker Sidequest is done, I'm left with more questions than answers. I really wish they gave us more to do with them, because I really love the concept, but the execution is so "meh". THE LAG: Dat Lag though XD......but seriously I was wondering why there were so little double battles and I understand why. On the New 3dXL it's alright. Barely any lag. For those with an old model, y'all screwed over. It's such a shame because it's more of a hardware problem than with the actual game, but it is so distracting that it takes away from the gameplay a bit. And considering the fact the Gamefreak pushed the limit of an already almost 6 year-old system, makes it even harder to avoid. I hope if that Stars rumor is true, we don't have lag on the next installment. Lack Of Rematchable trainers: This hurts the Post-Game so much. I wanted to raise some Pokemon to get stronger(as well as complete the Pokedex), but it's almost not worth it considering how hard it is to grind in this game. Thankfully, this game is very balance, but the trainers are not one of these things. The only trainers you can really rebattle again are the Elite 4, Challenge Title Opponents, and the Gamefreak Director, as well as the Battle Cafe Trainers. That's it. This is made even worse when the Pokemon's levels are 30 levels under you with the highest being in the mid to late 60s. If you want to grind, you have to resort to these battles plus Pony Gauntlet....which the highest level cap is 59. Needless to say, it sucks. These issues really hindered the game for me as a whole, but not enough to make me quit. I hope that Gamefreak can improve on these for the future. |
- NPCs who play a talking animation despite not saying anything
For example that person in the Battle Tree who gives you your BPs after a fight. - B doesn't default to not learning a move during battle - no Mawilite Really would have liked to use this one...even if I had to wait for Pokebank to come out. - no perma-only function Kinda sucks if I have to leave Festival Plaza just for a short time, but need to reconnect to the internet when I get back and try to trade something. - psychopath-dolly the protagonist Emotionless staring and hands almost all the time aligned like a little puppet during cutscenes. Though, the staring made me appreciate those mirrored glassed which turned the look of my character from "I will kill you in your sleep" to "Yo, I'm awesome; just watch me handle this shit" |
No Super Training is a big one. I hate EV training.
|
Horde EV training is still better than SOS EV training, though buffed Power items are very nice
|
Well, SOS chaining is only good if you know what pokemon give which IVs, which isn't that hard to find out though.
|
- SOS battles are annoying, what's worse is when some Pokemon are only obtainable with this method. Took me a whole day to catch Mareanie because Corsolas rarely called Pokemon.
- The opening and tutorials of the game took FOREVER. Could have at least given us an option to skip it. - My Pikachu missed out on Electro Ball because it took me a while to evolve it when it was a Pichu. So I had to keep my Pikachu from evolving until level 42. Only electric move I had until then was Volt Tackle. - A lot of Pokemon I wanted to use on my team are only available post-game. There's also barely a National Pokedex. - The protagonists creepy, never changing smile. - I don't think there was that guy with six Magikarps! |
The hours long introduction. Ugh.
|
Quote:
National Pokedex doesn't even exist in Sun & Moon. That's why you don't see any Pokedex number for non-Alolan native Pokemon caught through Island Scan. I also paid attention to the protagonist's lack of emotions. The cutscenes were already long and annoying as is, but seeing the protagonist do nothing but smiling when other characters are usually reacting to the situation proves how much of a blank state the protagonist really is. And yes, this was actually the first generation to have no fisherman with six Magikarp. I know Hoenn didn't have any six Magikarp team Fisherman either, but FR/LG was a thing so 3rd Gen still had one. Quote:

When you can't* even use your own room to change your clothes and you
have to visit the shop just to change. |
Too many un-needed cutscenes. Also, an opponent should not be able to guess what move type you are using. There were a handful of times where I was about to use a move that would have been super-effective against a storyline trainer. It would be the first time using that move in the battle, so how would they know that I am about to use a move of a super effective type?
|
Its a nightmare to restart the game. I need to re-watch all these cut scenes again .. Which were boring the first time as well.
I feel like my character is being taken from one cutscene to another |
- The missing of a National Pokédex is the biggest issue.
- Smeargle that lost all it's power (You can't use any Smeargle with Dark Void any more.) - Some of the Mega evolutions that are lost, like Mega Gardevoir. - The rarity of bottle caps - SOS calling is annoying when you want too catch a Pokémon. - The lack off improvement in the GTS (well, their backed improved), you can't chose the nature of the Pokémon - Talonflame's hidden ability that became nothing - The mass new Fairy types. Dragons are at a serious disadvantage now However their are a lot of improvements, and it does have a really good storyline. |
I don't have many complaints, really. However:
-No National Pokédex. Seriously? That's just annoying. -Linearity. My goodness, it's worse than BW, and that's saying something. I miss the roadblocks that were actually logical, like Psyduck with headaches (DP remakes plz). -Weather SOS Battles. Ugh, getting Castform is a chore. I don't mind SOS battles in general, though. -Some of the nerfs. Talonflame was fine, dammit! Meanwhile, the Parental Bond nerf only minimally affects Seismic Toss or Power-Up Punch spam, and M-Salamence is still god even with a slightly weaker Aerilate. I also think Dark Void was overdone - just making it fail for non-Darkrai should have been sufficient. On the other hand, I am so glad they finally added Mega Stones to the battle event opponents. The Maison was a pushover. |
