Building a desktop!

Just curious, but how many of y'all here have built your own desktop(s)? What is the primary reason you have one built; did you maybe build a home theater PC, a CAD workstation, or a gaming rig?

I'm looking to hopefully build a computer for Christmas and was just wondering if anyone else here actively uses a custom build. 8)

Star-Lord November 23rd, 2016 1:51 PM

I can't say I actively use one, but I've made a build for myself that I'm happy enough with. I realized that I spend so much time online that I should really set up a computer that's better than my crummy laptop (and can actually play Fallout 4) so, yeah. I have the parts all prepared for something that's in my price range and I'm going to get going to ordering parts and building it soon.

I've built my own in the past. I tend to build them because it tends to be cheaper than OEM setups or laptops. I primarily use them as my primary PCs that I use for nearly everything.

Nihilego November 23rd, 2016 2:28 PM

do it! you get a machine which perfectly meets your specifications for half the price. you know exactly what's gone into it, it's got no bloatware at all, and you kinda feel this weird sense of satisfaction while you're using it.

I've been planning on and off to build one over the years. I have build them for classes and such, but not my own.

Currently, I'm going to wait to see what Zen has to offer before making any decisions.

Saving up for a cheap gaming computer. Currently still checking out what components to buy.

Maki-Nishikino November 24th, 2016 7:42 AM

my file server is custom built using standard desktop pc hardware and case and i prefer custom built since u can get what you want without all the darn bloatware oem copies of windows comes with that you really dont want

Arsenic November 24th, 2016 9:17 AM

I built multiple PCs including my current rig. Hoping to do some big upgrades soon like a new x99 series MoBo!

Its a very fun activity for me even though I always get super stressed and worried that I'm going to break something...

Lucario November 24th, 2016 1:41 PM

My current, rapidly aging PC is something I've built, I'm going to (hopefully) build a new PC soon as well.

Eden November 27th, 2016 2:57 AM

Yup! I built my own PC in 2013. However, I guess you can say I've built two at this point. I've upgraded this thing so much that it's hard for me to consider it the same PC anymore.

Well in that instance at least a custom build can go any way you want it to, unlike pre-built/OEM builds. :D

Good ol' gaming PC built from scratch.

Glad I bothered building it cause now I know how to replace stuff without having to look at a manual and go "THIS IS THE RIGHT PIN CONNECTOR RIGHT???"

GamerTamer December 5th, 2016 3:14 AM

I built my own and got Deathadder and Vengeance K65

gehringgame December 5th, 2016 5:41 AM

I've built several rigs for myself and others. It's a great (but expensive ;-; ) hobby once you get into it. Feel free to PM me if you need any help picking out components or any tips for a first time builder! Best of luck!

Lucario December 7th, 2016 12:43 AM

I just finished building mine! Not got the new mouse&keyboard yet but it's 100% built, and it's running great.

Lucario, what components did you go with? Got any pics of the finished product?

I was on a really tight budget, it was the best I could afford, going to add a gpu later when I get the money.

Hey, nothing wrong with a budget build! I love building cheap and cheerful PCs. They're my favorites in fact. What will you be doing on this new rig?

VeryBestRogue December 13th, 2016 4:09 AM

I built My own Desktop cause I wanted one for Gaming but the premades sucked so I made my Own.. :)

Of course building your own is going to be better than buying an already-manufactured desktop! :)

I was thinking about this option a few days ago, because my main laptop is dying at this point. I don't feel like buying a new laptop/PC anymore and I think there are more benefits to building one on your own. Plus it sounds really interesting. Only downside is the costs and I've yet to get a proper monthly salary...

Building a desktop is cheaper usually once you get out of the bottom barrel even after factoring in the possible cost of Windows (which is pretty much necessary to not waste your video card performance at a minimum).

You should also be able to get better warranty terms for most components you get in there, and you will only need to send in the defective parts instead of the whole thing if something fails, knock on wood.

If you are in a tight budget and need a new computer build, I suggest skipping the SSD, not buying a video card for the time being, and using an i3 CPU. This should make things much cheaper to start with, and the i3 will carry you for a while.

Ah, thanks for the tips. :) I was wondering what stuff from my current laptop is still usable in the new PC, because I'm not really aware of what parts of the hardware are outdated and make my laptop close to dying.

Well looks like I'll be joining the PC building crew again. All I asked for Christmas from my family was a new door for my case, as the hinges snapped off(a $20 value) the case is perfectly fine otherwise. Instead I come home to a package of the exact size as the box my case came in (a $150 value) gdi I didn't want to spend my Christmas reassembling my PC just for a door.

Tsutarja December 19th, 2016 11:05 AM

As soon as my arm heals and I'm out of my sling I'll be building a new gaming rig!
