hold the 3DS upside-down

seeing as we've been seeing some increasingly bizarre and creative evolution methods in the past few generations - including some I didn't even know about, like evolving Sliggoo in the rain - I was wondering what everyone thought of them? do you enjoy some of the exotic methods of evolution, like holding the 3DS upside-down, or needing a Dark-type in your party, or do you prefer methods introduced in older generations?

Also, does anyone have any ideas for brand-new evolution methods? Seeing as Game Freak apparently seems to be fine with having super weird ones, I thought it'd be fun to try and come up with some new evolution methods of our own. Of course you can feel free to include as much or little information as you like.

I wouldn't mind them if the games themselves provided all necessary information on how every Pokémon evolves, like what was done in Pokémon Black 2/White 2.

New evolution methods? Let's see...
  • Level up while affected by a status condition (for instance, a Pokémon becomes a poison type if poisoned, psychic type if asleep, electric if paralyzed, fire if burned) .
  • Level up with very low friendship (could work for a Dark-type Pokémon) .
  • Level up while battling underwater using Dive (could work for a Pokémon based on underwater predators) .
  • Level up after using the Pokémon in a special way:
    • Involving it in catching a wild Pokémon.
    • Leaving it to produce an egg.
    • Mega-evolving it or making it use a Z-Power.

Yeah, these evolutions add an element of fun into the mix. I think if they just had either evolution by using an item or leveling up would make it feel less rewarding than some of the other methods we have. I like how we can level certain Pokémon up in specific areas at specific times of day, it just feels a little more exciting than simply using an item.

Holding the 3DS upside down was a new one on me but I'd definitely like to see more Pokémon with this evolution method! How about an evolution that requires you to say something into the microphone? It could be quite tricky but something with voice recognition would be a really cool way to evolve Pokémon.

While some of them are pretty interesting, they can also be a bit of a nuisance. For example, I was wondering why it was taking Salandit and Steene so long to evolve and none of the Evo Stones had any effect. Turns out that only female Salandit can evolve and Steene has to know Stomp. I had to catch another Salandit and I still need to find a Heart Scale for Steene. Dx

I'm all for creative evolution methods, but I don't think we should have to rely on guides to find them out.

This is a cool idea and I couldn't really think of my own new one so I'm gonna go with leveling up a Pokemon with the lowest friendship and I'm surprised we haven't seen that yet.

Ah, I had no idea that's how Steenee evolves, I just decided to keep the move, and then when it evolved I simply thought it was a basic level evolution. I guess I was lucky with her, while with Salandit, well, not as lucky with him. Yep, I caught a male Salandit, and I eventually googled it because he was taking so long to evolve. Turns out Crabrawler also has a gimmicky evolution, and I don't like the fact that I have to navigate the web to find this info while trying hard not to read any other spoilers.

I really, really wish we had some sort of clues in the games as to how to evolve these guys. I remember in B2W2 we could call Prof. Juniper and she would give hints on how to evolve a Pokemon in your party. Do we have something like this in Alola?

I actually didn't mind the whole holding your DS upside down to evolve. But this whole having to know a certain move or only during a certain spot or only in weather that could be totally random.

What about an evolution that requires a certain Legendary in the party? It could make said Pokemon very rare depending on the Legendary.

Evolution after being traded 50 times.

You there. Be in charge of the Sinnoh remake when it comes by, pls hurry game freak ;~; and be sure that there's a Chatot pre-evolution that uses this method to become a Chatot! :)

Hm...it's a good idea but it might also be a bit annoying, given that you gain friendship basically passively, whether it's through just walking or a level up. To keep it at zero, you'd need to either continuously faint the Pokemon or feed it those powder health items like Energy Powder. I guess it gives a use to those energy items, huh? x)

Sing a song to evolve.
