What was PokeCommunity like in the first year of launch?

I seek opinions and memories from the most grandest and sophisticated people of PokeCommunity. The catch is, you must be eloquent and vividly paint the details of your first years. I am inclined to read every words of your post. No matter how prolonged or dreary it is, I shall finish everyone's individual tales.

Aquacorde December 19th, 2016 11:50 PM

yikes tbh

13 year olds running the forums, I wasn't there but I'm sure it was magical

That's quite a bold claim, insisting PokeCommunity was boring without you. If you don't mind, can you provide evidence for your statement?

Frankly, I refuse to believe 13 year olds were responsible for ensuring PokeCommunity remains stable.

Desmond J. Pichuzilla December 20th, 2016 12:00 AM

I can't write smart anymore.
Shenron I was being sarcastic. You don't need evidence. This thread was a joke.

I'm getting out of here before you guys tease tf out of me.

Not to mention I'm not even here in the first place.

And I'm not supposedly worth teasing....

God, peace out.

I would love to see PC on its first year.

I was on a looooot of Forum with 13 y/o when I was that age, all in French tho. And none did well like this one.

Bellsprout December 20th, 2016 3:35 PM

my first year was 2009. I think I came in at the tail end of a group of members who called themselves sweater. They didn't get along with another group on PC but I can't remember if the other group had a name. I just remember PC as a whole being very cliquey and not too welcoming lol.

There were also member groups then and i joined a few but they were largely dead. PC families were really popular same as having a pair. Also everyone seemed to have matching avatars and sigs or at least took a lot more care and effort into making some kind of theme. I thought there were more impressionable members then. Being apart of staff seemed like a bigger deal then or I guess it was just more select/smaller??

I think the biggest change now is that the community has become more open and welcoming to new members

as the only surviving member of sweater i can confirm that we were mostly high school-age cunts living out petulant high school attitudes online

but it was always interesting to me that we always got the most shit bc we admitted that we were a cringey clique long before other cliquey users were like 'you know what? maybe we are also assholes too and should reflect on that.'

Can definitely validate that statement. It was a lot bigger of a deal back then than it is now, and I think that's a terrific thing. Staff was always put on some pedestal. It was like they were looked upon as these celebrities and everyone wanted to be part of that group of people or please them or befriend them just because they were part of that group. I remember back when I was a moderator, people would agree with me just because I was a moderator. That happened even more after I became a super moderator. And it wasn't because of my points or anything like that. It was simply because I was a staff member. I saw that a lot back then. Even if it's an opinion on something arbitrary or not even related to the forums, members would often "have my back" so to speak on nearly all matters. It was ridiculous, in retrospect. Hell, even at the time, I thought it was pretty daft. Maybe it's because I'm not on here as much as I used to be, but I don't see that happening all that often anymore.

I have been here since 2011, and I do have to confess the community wasn't as tight-knit as it was today. Back then, I was always in fear of staff power abuse but that's what to expect when you were the new kid on the forums.

I had probably witnessed the most drastic changes in PC's history in what has nearly been only six years.

Cherrim January 5th, 2017 12:06 AM

Oh shit here we go, first person in the thread who actually was here in PC's first year.

Ok first time I joined PC, it was a dinky little Ikonboard piggybacking off of Kwesi's The UD domain. I don't remember much beyond the "We are working on a better slogan" slogan but it had a pretty bustling fanart and anime community. People were really nice but it was a small forum at a time when every site and their mom had a forum so regulars were hard to come by and a forum that was super active one week could be gone the next. I didn't stick around this time because I'd joined like 30 forums in the summer of 2002 and when school started back up I pared down to like 3.

Next time I came around, PC had upgraded to vBulletin and merged with PE2K. The popular people from PE2K were pretty whiny about the merge because some had lost moderation power in the move and their cliques got kinda messed up in the process. If you stayed out of Other Chat, it was easy to avoid the cliques but they won all the Member of the Month things unless you worked your ass off to get on their good side. One of my friends at the time (who encouraged me to join and stick around) was really popular because of her art and got modded in the fanart forum but also made some enemies and was prone to drama. She went out with a bang, spamming "KAMIKAZE" over and over in every thread she could find and since PE2K mods didn't really do much beyond flaunt their power, it was a few hours of this before she was finally banned. It was a weird time. ?_?

It's been like 13 years so my memory of this time is more than a little hazy, but a few months later PE2K decided to split again and PC became its own thing and its activity plummeted... but it was still active enough to be fun. I felt a bit weird not leaving with my friend but I liked the place a bit too much and clicked with the new set of regulars enough to make a bit of a name for myself. I got modded in the spring of that year, partially because "we should mod a girl so we have at least ONE female on staff" (thank u half-assed affirmative action!). Getting modded back then was like... sooooo lax. Basically a bunch of random mods threw out suggestions and then if the admins liked them enough, you'd get an AIM message from Kwesi himself asking where you wanted to mod. It wasn't like... based on need for mods or anything, it was basically just on a whim. Anyway, I chose Other Anime bc I was a weeb and also Other Voting Polls because it hadn't had a mod in forever and needed one.

About a month later, I think a few s-mods quit--I can't remember if it was because of drama or what, but they needed some new ones. My name came up because I was nice and helpful (and also still a girl, iirc????) and Arcanine was modded along with me. I didn't notice any difference beyond being able to close threads everywhere because they forgot to give me access to the HQ where all greater-than-mod stuff happened. lmfao oops.

During this time, PC started running into database trouble. Back then, I think vB wasn't as well-optimized as it is now. That or we had some errors. Either way, whenever a thread got too big, sometimes it would just disappear entirely. Hundreds of posts would just go poof, and back then a few hundred posts was a big deal since I remember it being a REALLY BIG DEAL when someone reached 3k posts once. We had to make sure to lock any thread that got too long but I think eventually it got so bad that even threads that had only 4 pages were at risk sooo.... we decided to restart!

This is going a little bit past the "one year" mark, since the story is now in September 2003, but I'll just go to the end of that year to be safe. So we decided the best way to deal with the database errors would just be to wipe clean and start fresh. This was still in the era of forums being really popular no matter the website, so starting anew could be dangerous because if our forum didn't appear well-established, it might just fizzle out and die. Plus, making users re-register and build up their reputation again? Might work, might mean the end of PC. But it had to be done.

Obviously, the reset went off without a hitch, really. Thanks to user Kairi having admin powers for a while after the restart, we were able to deal with any problems that came up really quickly instead of waiting hours or days for an admin to come on and help. I also finally had access to the HQ and everyone was like "OHHH you didn't have this forum before? no wonder you were so quiet!!" and so began my long journey of having a hand in almost every part of PC for the next 8 years. 'v' (It was around this time that modding became much more logical instead of the weird whimsical version that PC worked off of for the first year.)

Non-staff users were pretty great too. We lost quite a few accounts in the move, but plenty of people re-invited their friends and worked hard to boost their activity over the coming weeks so that we didn't even really have a dip in activity. PC just kept on growing and growing and growing after that and, somehow, it's still here today!!

The best part of digging all this back up for me is remembering the time when both Kairi and I were active parts of PC and when we had a big hand. I actually met up with her in real life a few days ago, all the way across the world in Tokyo! It was sooo cool to finally meet after 13+ years of knowing each other. ;w; We even reminisced about PC a little bit!

Did PC ever have a linked website like Serebii or Pokebeach?

Mmhmm!

PC was actually originally built to be a forum for several sites. So instead of a bunch of sites having a bunch of different forums, they would all share one forum and not split the activity. It caused a whole bunch of drama back in the day because the only way to become an admin on PC was to have your site chosen to be a partner site and people who were active on the forum could only ever hope for s-mod, which became a sore spot.

I can't remember every site that was part of PC but here's a partial list!
  • The Unknown Dungeon
  • Pokemon Palace Network
  • Zapchu Evolution
  • PE2K
  • Total Pokemon
  • S*afoam Island (fuck you m3)
  • V-Road (or Victory Road?)
  • The APCC (I can't remember what this stood for LOL)
  • #free_pokemon
  • DF Dadragonz (? Claire's website. I think this might've been the name??)

DF Dadragonz (and yes, that is the correct name, 'z' and all) was the site that brought me here, I believe. Apart from PPN, I can't say that any of the other ones you mention ring any sort of bell!

I googled a few phrases trying to track down as many as I could remember. I just copy pasted that one from a post and hoped it was right. :P

I only remembered like 4 of those from the top of my head. I'm surprised it was so difficult to find others...

PC had no formal systems of doing stuff at the start — we didn't have a formal warnings system, and people could be banned at the drop of a hat. And also we had tons of dumb rules. I've pitched in the implementation of these, and an attempt at being fairer. Yay.

So it turned out my personality shown when the first post I ever made was a post that I used to help someone.

I've went through a lot of things those times, including a bit of chaos relating to a flamewar when it came to things like Kanto and Johto discussions. It even got me into a few problems with theRealOne, which I sorted out.

That was during December.

In December, after looking around at all different chain stories, I got attracted to making my own. Then I met Shadow, and he became a friend of mine from time to time. The interest in chain stories made us... friends. Even now he's a good friend of mine. It's been nearly 10 months since I started being on the community.

During the early months of this year, I registered an account under the name of Masato-san.

But during those times it seemed Pokmon Community wasn't the same. I thought about when PE2K had no longer been a Pokmon Community site. Was that the case?

There wasn't anything I felt wrong with PC at those times, but during the times, other than a few members, I felt ignored.

When it was the time recently, when Pokmon Community had a new database, I registered after Kairi. Kairi, or Haruka-chan as I knew a while back, was a person who I liked as she had known so much about Pokmon. Although I haven't admitted it. I thought that I could be able to go along with Pokmon Community. But I was wrong for the while. I still thought that the only one who actually knew and made even a response that I knew she'd make, was Kairi. Although I was to think that I'd be better with a new account, which you may know as Shigeru-san, it probably didn't work.

And now I post here, in a new account that reflects my possibly favorite English name. Because I never originally created a thread for introduction to the new database, or even an introduction when I first started browsing Pokmon Community, I thought I should now.

It's really cool to hear these stories about the early days! I wish that I would have joined earlier, but at the same time I probably would have been a very annoying delinquent picking fights on random threads, so at least you guys didn't have to deal with that.

Interesting stories from first-year users. Obviously not everything can be smooth sailing from the first year but still nice to see things have worked out well since.

It feels like a lot has changed even in the past year or two of my inactivity in PC.

huh..this is interesting jeez. i joined in 2010 and was active for a few months and then i jumped off the grid and headed to other forums, then returned for awhile and left many times and finally i became fully active again in the summer of 2016 i think? so i can't remember too much from 2010..but it was very intimidating and not very welcoming..at least from what i can remember. maybe it's bc i was 12 then and immature blep

also to note: my username was shadow_angel for like 6 years lmao, then hoshiko and now sumire.

When I joined, PC had -fairly- recently moved over from some other bulletin to where it is now (I don't remember the technicalities but it was a really small at first.. it was hosted somewhere else and it apparently got wiped..)

Anyway, when I joined, back in 2004, the rules were REALLY strict. Really in-depth discussions were kind the focus. I mainly stuck around the DCC (Daily chit-chat) forum in OC (Other chat.) And there weren't so many sub-sections of "Other chat."
We didn't have visitor messages. Our PM boxes were TEENY, we didn't have post comments and I think we didn't even have multi-quoting! There were no blogs. There was only an IRC and an oekaki.. hmm.. there have been a lot of improvements, but back then had more of a feeling of.. closeness and family I guess.
The daily chitchat was HELLA popular. You'd post something and between the time it took for you to write something and hit submit(mind you, internet was slower those days..) there would be a whole new page for you to read back on and reply to.
I remember being part of a group called the DCC Gangbangers (lol..) we were just a group of regulars that posted a lot in the section. There was no VIP section either. Staff was REALLY cliquey.. we had some hackers that posted porn over the whole site a couple of times..

Hmm.. I made a LOT of friends from on here actually, and still keep in touch with quite a lot of them. (Mr. CatDog, Jorge (Ryoutarou), Drummershuff, and more)
I even met Pokejungle for the first time when I visited Japan in May this year! It's been awesome to get to meet people from a website like this. My current boyfriend and I met on here when we were like.. 15! I'm 27 now and we've been together for over 5 years.

Uh.. what else?! I dunno.. trying to condense over 10 years of history in like a couple paragraphs is kinda hard. Ask me something and I'll be happy to elaborate.
