What did you like most about gen 1?

Pretty much the opposite of the What Annoyed you thread. What did you like best?

Mawa December 21st, 2016 5:30 PM

The graphic, seriously. I love the 2D games.
I like the map too, and... the way the color changed when you enter a new town XD
The music is great too

VisionofMilotic December 21st, 2016 7:33 PM

The original starters. I'm picky, usually there is at least one regional starter that I do not like at a glance, but this is a case where I like all 3. I think Bulbasaur, Charmander and Squirtle are like classic cars, they are never out of style, in fact they get better with age *cough* mega charizard x and y *cough*

I like the story and its darkness, casinos, criminals, inhumane experiments, death and ghosts. Its perhaps less censored than more recent games.

The glitches. It gives the game an edginess that can't really be replicated. Yeah you can still glitch the game, but gen 1 is so weird and boundless. Glitch city, MissingNo, Where is the Door, poisoned pkmn glitch, Ditto glitch. It makes these games special because they present you with a whole separate world to play in apart from regular gameplay.

Pikachu in Pokemon yellow. His friendship with you is awesome, actually being able to say his name + all of the cute animation and expressions, turning around and winking at you, falling asleep, giving you valentines, the silent treatment, thundershocking you, falling in love, going fishing, dancing. Its epic.

EDIT: Last but not least it introduced a lot of great Pokemon that I still enjoy and find useful Starmie, Dragonite, Arcanine, Gengar, Gyarados just to name a few.

everything. best era of pkmn follow by gen2

AleXShi1 December 23rd, 2016 11:54 AM

The music was really good and also the glitches it had, nothing beats seeing sprites get all messed up like that

Megan December 23rd, 2016 12:43 PM

It's that the gen 1 games pretty much encompass the very essence that is Pokemon at its core. Future games certainly improved on the formula and introduced and changed a lot of things for the better; but by doing so and refining everything up to the point that we can see today, they gave up that sheer rawness that gives the first gen that feeling of being something special.

Mega Koopa X December 23rd, 2016 7:22 PM

The archaic feel of the music. Even though I didn't grow up with gen 1, I feel like a kid again just listening to the "Road to Viridian City" theme.

Guest123_x1 December 24th, 2016 7:34 PM

The best things about Generation I to me are the music package and the relatively simple gameplay mechanics as compared to how the more recent generations operate. All the bells and whistles that the latest main series games come with now weren't really needed for players to successfully complete the earliest games back in the day. Like I've said before elsewhere, most of us were between 7-12 years old when Generation I was mainstream, and we got along fine with what we had to deal with-yet it seems these days GameFreak doesn't think players in that age group can successfully complete a game without a bunch of forced several-minute-long cutscenes as is the case with Sun and Moon.

The music and the simplicity of it all. No natures or genders or love stats, just catch pokémon and grow them.

Flowerchild December 26th, 2016 3:14 AM

the glitches haha. I really enjoy glitch hunting and trying to break the game ^___^

Sheep December 26th, 2016 12:29 PM

The difficulty! I always had such massive trouble against the E4 in these games. It was stressful but fun. Made beating them so much more satisfying. Often I had to catch Zapdos before I could even attempt it, since my butt would get kicked otherwise. x'D

Really? R/B/Y were certainly hard, but I had a much harder time on some of the other games. I would say it's about equal to 5th gen in difficulty.

Degurchaff December 27th, 2016 1:36 PM

I really love the various amount of glitches that are found in the gen 1 games

I spent a good amount of time experimenting with the Cinnabar island water tile trying to see what Pokemon i would encounter.

Acrozz December 27th, 2016 2:05 PM

The simplicity... I like the features from the newer games but they made the game too complex in some aspects.

And also the lack of tutorials. The whole thing was just like "This is how you catch a pokémon. Now go and beat the game!"

Shitik December 27th, 2016 2:27 PM

I think that the music is... I don't know why, it's all scratchy and stuff, but anytime I hear it, it just gives off a good vibe and loads of memories. Same with the second generation and the third generation.

Although I wouldn't say that gen 1 is an open world game, I enjoy that you do have some choices in how to progress through the game. I already, explain this in detail in the unpopular opinion thread but I do think it works for gen 1's benefit. Satoshi Taijri did comment that Pokémon's appeal is that you can make your journey your own. Finding different ways to approach the game definitely adds to the replay value, or at least for me.

I also like the music too. SS. Anne and the Trainer Battle theme are one of my favourite tracks in the Pokemon series. It might be a personal preference or nostalgia but I think gen 1's music stands out more than gens 6 and 7's music. I even prefer it to the remake's tracks, but then again I didn't really like Game Freak's approach to music in the gen 3 era. Granted, a lot of music on the GBA sounds kind of awkward to me(there are exceptions though).

LyokoGirl5000 January 2nd, 2017 7:59 PM

My favorite thing about gen 1 has to be the move animations. Hyper Beam and Thunderbolt are just awesome! It's not all that impressive today, but when the games first came out, a flashy effect meant that the move was good - no exceptions!

JoshTheTrainer January 3rd, 2017 6:31 AM

The glitches, not gonna lie.

mikey January 7th, 2017 9:11 PM

I really find RBY to be challenging, which I enjoy. No matter how hard you train, I think the game will always be a challenge. No Exp Share or anything like it. That makes it fun though!

Also really love the music, characters, and Kanto region itself.

Petal_Blizzard January 23rd, 2017 12:13 PM

Loved Pokemon Yellow because i could get Bulbasaur, charmander, Pikachu and squirtle early on :D

Also Pikachu's Face emotions

Radiating February 8th, 2017 9:47 PM

My favorites things are the uncensorship (Death references, casinos, and team rocket activities), nostalgia for being the first pokemon games I played, and of course: The glitches! (Looking at you, MissingNo.)

CharnaySeba February 9th, 2017 12:43 PM

The nightmare fuel sprites.

The music and the flat 2D graphics - I'm not a fan of the look of Gen IV+ personally.
I also have a soft spot for the original starter pokemon too!

PS: There was Exp. All. You received it from one of Professor Oak's Aide's when you caught 50 pokemon. It shared all exp between the party equally during Gen I :)

Iria Animi February 10th, 2017 2:33 PM

I really like the final mind blowing twist of all Pokemon game that your rival is the champion! which we just learn after beating Lance! Only didn't like the difficulty.

DestinedMoon February 11th, 2017 9:22 PM

The graphics for it's nostalgic feeling of the simpler times and how different/frustrating/broken some of the mechanics were
