RM's question/problem thread

I have a lot of problems with my computer, so instead of making a thread for each one, i'm having a thread for all of them updated with my current problem.

Computer info: It's an IBM running on Windows 98. It has a 400MHZ processor and it has a 64MB RAM.

Current problem/question: None as of now, I don't want to say all my problems all at once.

Current problem/question: Is there any way I can make my computer faster? It's a 10-year-old IBM with Windows 98. My computer is very slow all the time, even after I defragment the whole drive. Also, what are ways I can increase my memory on my computer? I currently have a total of 3.92 GB of space. 2.39 GB are used and I have 1.53 GB of free space.

Get a new computer. There is no way to make a 10-year old computer fast anymore. Also, a computer should only last, at maximum, 2-3 years before you need to upgrade.

I can't afford a new computer, I can just bearly afford dailup for the Internet. I can't even afford to buy cards anymore, so there's no way I could get a new computer.

If you don't have the money to buy a new computer or anything of the such (like me, I'm using a Pentium II), you can try to find someone who has the upgrade cd to Windows XP, which seems to run faster then a PC using Windows 95/98/98SE/ME/2000.

How can I find someone with a CD with Windows XP who'll give me a copy for free?

Getting XP for free is illegal and XP won't work on a 10-year old PC. It'll just make it slower. I can't think of any ideas to speed your PC. Sorry.

When my mom got this computer she got it upgraded from Windows 95 for free. Well, now the only question left for now is how can I get more memory for my computer.

Kyosuke May 14th, 2005 10:40 PM

Well what kind of computer do you have?

MewSkitty May 15th, 2005 8:10 PM

I have an IBM running on Windows 98.

Kyosuke May 15th, 2005 8:40 PM

That's a start XD, but do you know how fast it is? (eg. 200 Mhz, 2 Ghz etc.)

Brendon May 15th, 2005 10:00 PM

well I have an Uncle that could help you with the problem, but he went to NYC.Sorry

My computer has a 400MHz processor and a 64MB RAM.

An IBM - Windows 98, 400MHZ, 64 MB Ram is not bad I guess. If you can't buy a new computer, I suggest you buy 64MB and 128MB RAM makes your computer a helluva lot faster. Computer parts prices have come crashing down currently and I think this might fit into your budget. Also, Don't install XP in your computer. It takes too much space and memory and will make sure your computer runs dead slow.

For a 400 Mhz processor, it would be a very good idea to update to 128 MB ram... its not much, about $30, maybe cheaper if you shop around.

MewSkitty May 16th, 2005 7:23 PM

Thanks for your help. I'll let you know how things go.

Chrono [email protected] May 17th, 2005 9:48 PM

A legal copy may even cost less than 27$, if you hunt around well. Also I have a book called " Tips to perk up your Windows" to speed up Windows 98 & XP - I will post some useful ones here.

You're going to need to find RAM that matches up with your processor or else you'll actually slow down your computer. There was a site that chose the right type of RAM for you, but I can't remeber the address.

Chrono [email protected] May 20th, 2005 8:04 PM

Kip is right. When you buy, ask the shop owner or someone if the RAM you buy is right for your computer?
