I love old school horror and thriller movies. The Exorcist, Nightmare on Elm Street, The Birds etc etc. Examples of masterful film making and suspense instead of relying on special effects.

Reyzadren May 1st, 2017 5:27 PM

I tend to like certain types of action movies, stuff like Total recall, Now you see me, Trance and B13 Ultimatum.

I had a panic attack when I saw this thread. Look, I've had such a hard time answering this that I literally took a few hours of my day at one point last month and put together a list. One movie got replaced with a new movie last week, but that's it. It wasn't easy, and the list is pretty long. So just for the sake of actually using said list, here are my top 15 movies, with a short statement explaining why:
Spoiler:
Collateral by Michael Mann
Beautiful, dreary environments and wonderful acting make the philosophical banter and mood quite the experience.
Predestination by The Spierig Brothers
Inventive sci-fi concept that will take you on a RIDE. Also very well filmed.
Your Name by Makoto Shinkai
I added this one last week (and took off Fast Five, which is a great - but not phenomenal - movie). What can I even say... this movie just took me so many places emotionally. I was laughing and crying at the edge of my seat the whole time. The animation is fucking beautiful. I didn't even second-guess myself when I put this movie on here, legit took me back to when I adored animated movies.
The Aviator by Martin Scorsese
A wonderfully filmed, insightful look into the life and mind of a man who suffers from OCD.
The Pursuit of Happyness by Gabriele Muccino
Cry-fest. Happy ending and a side to Will Smith that I had never seen before.
Interstellar by Christopher Nolan
Ugh, so ambitious. Some people didn't think it quite met those ambitions, but I did.
The Dark Knight Rises by Christopher Nolan
Easily my favorite superhero movie. The result of putting a genius in the director's chair and letting him flip the genre on its head, teaching everyone just how well defined your heroes and villains can be. Also, Heath Ledger.
Snowpiercer by Bong Joon-ho
What a genre film. Geez, took me by surprise. So creative and well-filmed <3
The Matrix by The Wachowskis
What can I even say that I haven't already at some point lmao.
La La Land by Damien Chazelle
This movie was so touching and captivating, it blew me away.
Mission: Impossible by Brian De Palma
Look, I like all the MI movies (except for MI2, eww), but this one was so much more than an action movie. Brian De Palma is a connoisseur of portraying tension and making you feel it at every turn.
The Lion King by Roger Allers and Rob Minkoff
Do I... do I even need to say anything here? xD
Jurassic Park by Steven Spielberg
Genre-defining masterclass in filmmaking.
Titanic by James Cameron
DO NOT JUDGE ME I CRY EVERY TIME.
Swiss Army Man by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert
So many people walked out of this movie, I don't understand. What an original piece of art, thoughtful and filled with symbolism and terrific acting. Daniel Radcliffe's finest performance, hands down.

Lunar May 2nd, 2017 12:59 PM

All the Harry Potter and LotR films <3

Mawa May 2nd, 2017 2:52 PM

Haven't watched a lot of movies, but I am Team Lion King!

stevensargent May 2nd, 2017 11:36 PM

I like to watch romantic movies. They taught me how to impress a girl.

BlazingCobaltX May 3rd, 2017 11:11 AM

Pfft I am very bad with movies, but some I know I'll enjoy always are the Iron Man movies, Cinderella, and Frozen. Maybe some others if I remember them...

Esper May 4th, 2017 11:22 AM

There are a lot. The Fifth Element is always a good fallback name to drop though.

ImMrRoboto August 6th, 2017 6:15 PM

tokyodrift August 6th, 2017 7:30 PM

All anyone ever needs is Mean Girls.

Cersei Lannister August 8th, 2017 4:21 AM

Mean Girls is incredible and speaks to my soul.

But one of the top movies I've seen in be last five years is the Martian. Absolutely incredible movie that kept me entranced the whole time.

Alakazam17 August 9th, 2017 4:27 AM

I'll put Disney in a category of its own. These are my top three of theirs:

-The Little Mermaid
-Mulan
-Tarzan

As for other movies, I iike a variety of genres except horror because I'm a scaredy-cat. My other favourites include:

-Simply Irresistible
-Slumdog Millionaire
-Jurassic Park
-The Last Samurai
-more I can't think of atm

MechaMoth August 15th, 2017 1:18 PM

  • My favorite movie of all time is: Me and You and Everyone We Know. It just really speaks to me as a nice indie movie.
  • The Fall has some of the most gorgeous visuals in all of cinematic history.
  • The VVitch is one of the best horror films in years.
  • Alien is a great horror film and one of my favorites of all time.
  • Mad Max: Fury Road is a great action film with a fantastic blend of practical and visual effects.
  • Lord of the Rings trilogy extended editions. Because all I want is 12 hours of Hobbits and defeating evil.

I've re-watched World War Z recently; it wasn't such a bad decision.

Austin August 17th, 2017 7:53 PM

Pulp Fiction probably takes the cake for my favorite movie. Actually, most Quentin Tarantino movies are up there. Some other good ones:
  • It Follows
  • every Star Wars movie (yes, even the prequels)
  • The Matrix
  • The Iron Giant
  • Shutter Island
  • Alien
  • Monty Python and the Holy Grail

thedestinedblade August 17th, 2017 10:05 PM

Never been a big movie guy. Heavyweights, The Big Green, and Good Burger (lol) are all childhood favorites. Though lately I've been watching some of the old stuff, and I've enjoyed quite a few of them. Anyways, I'll list a few favorites.

- No Country for Old Men
- Wall-E
- Schindler's List
- One Flew Over the Cuckoo's nest
- Pulp Fiction (might be the most quotable movie ever, lol)
- Grave of the Fireflies ;-;

Circuit August 19th, 2017 6:06 PM

Well, I can't say I've seen many movies but from the ones I have seen, this would be my favourite's list.

1. Princess Mononoke

I could talk for days about this movie, the screenplay, the animation, artwork, concept, ideals... But it's a subjective movie and I'll let you figure out how you feel about it, if you watch it. All I know is, that this is my favourite movie. Period.

2. The Intern

I don't much like softer movies that one might say is "for girls" or whatever bollocks like that. But this movie is something special. Doesn't cease to bring out a range of emotions in me, and is an all-around touching movie. Robert de Niro is a phenomenal actor in this, and really tells a believable tale. Witty and humorous, with an anchor in real-life, this film really hits home hard.

3. The Iron Giant

There aren't many films from my childhood which I look back on and say "That is a film I'll watch when I'm 80." The Iron Giant however is one of these films. I have found that as I watch it does get a little less impactive each time, but its a small effect, and the film still has a very strong effect on me today. It's a beautiful tale, impacting that it's not who we are on the outside, but who we are on the inside that matters, and I stand by the lessons this movie teaches even today.

4. Pulp Fiction

Yes, it's a Tarentino film, like many people have on their lists. But Pulp Fiction is on many peoples' lists for good reason. It's a classic masterpiece, filled with brilliant acting and writing, and never fails to entertain.

5. Dusk till Dawn

Another Tarantino, and no, this isn't on my list because I particularly enjoyed it. I just think it's a cracking film which will take you for one hell of a ride, and I remember that when watching this with my mates, it was a great bit of fun to watch.

6. Your Name/Summer Wars/The Girl who Leapt Through TIme

All animations, but they are all good in their own rights. These are more subject to taste, but they are all inspiring movies and I can't help but enjoy myself when watching one.

7. The Shawshank Redemption

Eh, this maybe should be higher but tbh, a lot on this list should be ranked differently, so take the order of these with a generous pinch of salt. This film is a good few hours of damn good story-telling, and really pulls you into it. Plus anything with Morgan Freeman is just amazing anyway, but on top this film gives you the works. A serious must watch for anyone looking for a good film that isn't like the brain-dead action mush that gets pushed out on the majority these days.

Okay that does it at seven I need to sleep. The short explanation is ofc condensed, because it would take me years to write reasons for all films. My advice? Go and watch them. I like to sit with a good film at least every weekend. I'd do it every day if I had enough beer and pizza. Nothing better than watching a new film on netflix in the evening.
