NASA wants to probe Uranus

...and it also wants to look at Uranus's gas.

http://metro.co.uk/2017/06/19/nasa-wants-to-probe-deeper-into-uranus-than-ever-before-6718917/

Uranus is one of the many Jovian (gas) planets in the Solar System.

So what do you guys think of this? Do you think this would be something of success for NASA, or do you think there will be major obstacles along the way?

Pinkie-Dawn June 21st, 2017 6:58 PM

I'm sorry, but after that Captain Underpants movie reignited Uranus as a joke, I can't help but laugh at this news. I could this fly-by to begin within a few years due to how far the planet is from Earth.

jombii June 21st, 2017 7:16 PM

all the jokes aside, I hope it becomes successful.

Do we have an estimate how long a probe can get to uranus from here?

Percy June 22nd, 2017 12:53 AM

Dammit. I would be so interested if I get a peek of Uranus. It would be controversial. seriously, it will be so interesting to study Uranus.

Judge Mandolore Shepard June 22nd, 2017 5:56 AM

Well jokes aside and reference to Mass Effect 2 as well, it could be successful.

Retro Grunt June 22nd, 2017 7:05 AM

I think it could be really interesting.
I mean I'm all for it, we can never have enough info on Jovian Planets.

Raffy98 June 22nd, 2017 7:20 AM

Sorry to be a party pooper but the correct pronunciation for this planet is Uranùs. ;)
Anyway, I'm interested, space always conceals great stuff that we should see and study, so I'm always all in for space explorations!

I wish NASA were sending probes to all the planets and doing 10x as much as they are now.

Voyager 2 took over 8 years to reach Uranus. That was back in the 80s. Technology has certainly improved since then. New Horizons reached Pluto in about the same amount of time even though Pluto is about twice as far from us, but then NH wasn't designed to stop, slow down, and orbit. It would probably take years to get there in any case.

To be honest, that's how I first heard it pronounced, when I had an interactive toy as a child that talked about the features of the Solar System. It wasn't until I was in grade school that we studied planets and then I heard a teacher (and the students) say it as "ur-ayy-nus" {XD}

*NASA actually gets a better budget*

That would be the challenge: Not only get the distance to the planet, but to be able to orbit it. Takes way more effort to study than it does to shoot past.

Overall, studying another Jovian in more detail will be great. I think it's a great idea since we take some of those planets for granted.

I'll never not think of this whenever this topic comes up:
Spoiler:

That aside, this is very cool news. I really hope that enough time is given to the study of its moons, especially Triton. ^_^

What a leap for mankind in that it's actively trying to probe Uranus

Flowerchild June 24th, 2017 12:13 AM

i dont knnow what the actual goal of this is bc every time i read something about it i stop reading and start laughing until i need to go lie down
this is rlly happening. its great

BillyGal June 27th, 2017 2:00 AM

soon we will have new pictures of Uranus
