About the Monthly-Mini Challenges...

I tried to make them as much as people wanted them - not starting new game, duration for one month and new one each time the last one ends were all the things that people wanted and agreed on in this thread. There was even a attempt to have something like points system and prizes. Inkblots was in charge of the points and Tek in charge of the prizes. There is still hidden thread for points (or at least there was when I left).

The problem was that people wanted these events, but then almost noone participated in them, but when I skipped one month, people asked me why there's not one for a month.

IMHO the best one was Halloween one, which was more of the normal event that this type of Monthly-Mini and most people participated in it.

Will confirm - still a hidden thread for that :P

See, the whole "not needing a new file" thing and the short time frame are the reasons I didn't join them tbh. Interrupting what I was doing in a given run for the sake of some weird sub-challenge. felt... Odd?

I agree the Haloween challenge was the best. It was really a good idea and pretty much what I was trying to replicate here. I think it's worth a shot to see who signs up though.

Destroy it! I don't even know why I let it live XD

Yeah, it put me off of the many of them too, because I just didn't want to play Sun (only version that I had completed at the time).

Look at old events from Sydian and Necrum. That's what I did and pretty much combined few Halloween events into one. But I feel 3 months are too much. I remember doing Summer-themed Challenge on different forum and set it to 2 months... And it was too much. Few completed it in the first month, then everyone forget about it and returned in the last week, tried to complete it, but noone did in the end.

That was actually so people's current challenge runs wouldn't be interrupted lol the idea was that whatever challenge you were currently doing, you could just incorporate the monthly challenge on the side in that same save, so you could in theory participate every month without being limited to only ever doing monthly challenges... if that makes sense

I guess it didn't end up working out that way lol I didn't have a chance to participate in any of them after the first couple so I never actually saw how that played out in practice

Sydian March 11th, 2018 1:57 PM

As I saw the challenges that used did not require you to restart your file, it usually meant like... People that have completed files and use them as their "main" game, so to speak. As in, that's where you're done, you beat the Champion, you trade or battle, etc. So without having to delete that, you're able to pick up a new team from scratch and do this challenge. However, if it wasn't an option before, I think those could also benefit from adding the option to use a new file. I personally enjoy a fresh playthrough with that team and getting the full experience with them rather than bum rushing to raise them all post game, however I won't say that challenges like that are a bust. Good example of that would be Stadium Arcadium a few years ago.

But anyway, having a time frame isn't bad, it's just that having it too long makes the event feel less...eventful? Aha. When it's running for two or three months, it doesn't feel like anything you have to hurry and jump on while it's still available. When it's up for a month, that's usually plenty of time to finish a Pokemon game (and people know their abilities best; if you play fast, you can join late and still finish and if you play slow, you can start at the beginning and still pace yourself for the most part). I always ran mine a month at max because I felt like that was plenty of time, but also not too long of time. Usually the challenges were more centered towards holidays as well, so obviously you don't want like...a St. Patrick's Day challenge running into May. The novelty has worn off by then.

Ahri March 17th, 2018 6:02 PM

I've been away for longer than I anticipated but now I'm back and I shall properly revive the Time Warp Challenge for any people still interested in it.... on my next day off that is c.c

Janp March 18th, 2018 3:29 AM

Good to see you back. Time Warp Challenge was 1st challenge I participated and completed here, back in 2013. It was Egyptian Era in FireRed. I also remember that I started Jurassic Jam in Gold, but never completed it.

Sydian March 18th, 2018 7:07 AM

That's still one I never did. I wish I had more time available to do challenges like I did back in the day lmfao. Don't adult, kids. I highly discourage it. lol

Agreed. I tried to get out of adulting by going back to university. Hasn't worked quite the way I thought. Turns out going to school as an adult requires nearly the same amount of adulting as I was doing before.

Conclusion: just don't ever start adulting, maybe then you'll be safe.

Janp March 18th, 2018 11:41 PM

I'm so glad that I go to uni and only have to do semi-adulting... But I already have nightmares about full-blown adulting.

Please help me!

Okay, so I was thinking about new challenge that I would do myself in Challenge Logs, but it could also be made into normal challenge. And what would that be about?

Do you know about This or That game in Pokémon Trivia? In it one player gives next player choice between two Pokémon-related things. So I was wondering what if I ask other people about how to play the game by giving them this type of questions and then play the game.
For my challenge I was thinking about doing FireRed and had some of the choices ready:

Beat Brock with only my starter OR use any Pokémon except the starter?

Catch Clefairy in Mt. Moon OR buy Magikarp for 500?

Use at least 2 Water-Types during E4 OR use no Water-Type whole game?

Box 1 Pokémon that battled in the gym battle after each Gym OR catch 1 new Pokémon before each Gym and use it during that gym battle?

You probably get the idea. So, what do you think about it?

Digital Waffle March 28th, 2018 1:50 PM

I like the idea specially because I can be a bit ... undecisive at time but would it be a one-time stop thing like 'ask a bunch of things when getting started' or would people be expected to take regular stops (say every other badge or something like that)?

But yeah, I think it can work. I've seen "Reader add Rules" runs in other places, and it's a bit of a generalization of your idea; only instead of a binary / ternary / whatever option you only posted a few hard limits (if any) and opened people up to rules for a while in the beginning or after a significant milestone with the most popular rule(s) being chosen.

Of course since we'd be talking a main thread for everybody maybe a first-come first-serve situation would be better?

I was thinking about the same thing ever since I come up with this whole thing. Some people could not know what they want to do whole game, so they would prefer to ask after some progress.
And then, when asking after some progress you can modify your answers to make the challenge harder or easier.

So I would leave it to on everyone to decide for themselfs.

I would go with the classic - First user sign-up and gives a list of some "This or That" and then the next user chooses the answers.

I'd definitely be down for this challenge if/when it gets up and running. Would each user make atleast 6 different options after they sign up for the next person?

I have another idea which I'm sure has been done before. I'm not sure if it's enough for a challenge thread though, but I plan to do it myself. I was thinking of doing a challenge where you're not allowed to catch random encounters. For instance In GSC the starter is okay, the 2 eggs, suddowoodo, Gyarados, Eevee etc.

I believe it could be a fun challenge, Gen 2 seems like it would have the most options for a team, but that could be because it's the generation I know the best.

I have something like this as part of the BINGO! Challenge, but I remember it was here as stand-alone challenge. Including static encounters wouldn't probably change much for regions other that Kanto and Johto. I think it would be about using your starter and fossil plus static Pokémon... Small number of available Pokémon but still nice roster.

Hey, I am wondering if it would be possible to reopen the Wedlocke challenge thread as a new one? I wouldn't mind overseeing it if it is reinstated

Jonathan1990 April 26th, 2018 11:50 AM

Best Type Of Nuzlocke Challenge

I've watched loads on Youtube and my favourite are the Taglockes where they get a group of 9 poketubers play different sections of the game. I wonder if that has been tried with Gold, Silver or Crystal though. That would involve 18 different people. 16 for the gyms, one for league and another for Mount Moon and Red. Also put a poll with 10 popular nuzlockes and a other option if you like another type.

It's something I'd approve unless there is precedent not to, and I don't see any. So, go ahead!

(FYI Jonathan I moved your thread in here, this is where we discuss challenges and stuff)

Taglockes actually came up in a discussion within one of the other PC departments, specifically a potential collab between the Youtube (may it rest in peace) and Daily teams.

I had to get rid of the poll, but I'll answer the question anyway: I like the basic locke myself though that isn't my favorite type of challenge.

Taglocke and Cagelocke are one of the challenges I wanted always try, but never found anyone to do them with. I think there was once a thread with something similar, where 3 people played the game on one save and took turns after each Gym.

Anyway, my favourite is Egglocke, because it adds new dimension to the games, where you use pretty much random Pokémon that other people prepared for you ,which can be somewhat different that just using randomizer and playing regular Nuzlocke.

Janp June 6th, 2018 5:18 AM

I was thinking how to revive discussion here and was curious about one thing. Did any of you ever did Shinylocke or Shiny Badge Quest Challenge? I'm kinda tempted to do one when I get Ultra Moon, but I'm afraid it won't be worth it.

Junier July 24th, 2018 6:27 AM

Dropping a question: can we make challenges for non-mainline Pokemon games? 'Cause, see, I'm on a PMD kick...

I never thought about that, but don't see a problem with it.

SyngthaSuyeon July 26th, 2018 8:32 AM

Just came up with the following challenge. Let me know what you guys think. If anyone's interested, then I'll post it.

Spoiler:

Steven Universe Challenge

Welcome to Beach City, where the weather is great and humanoid gem warriors (and a half gem-half human boy) keep the world safe from eldritch abominations and their prior planet turned enemy: Homeworld. You’ll be forming your team around the quirky world that is SU.

Games…

For the sake of being inclusive, this challenge is open to all generations (1-7).

Rules…

You must build a team around any of the following clauses…

Diamond Authority… Each diamond has gems below them that share their attributes. You must have a Mon that is a Diamond and the rest of the team must be built around similarities to that Diamond.
Spoiler:
For ex. If my chosen Diamond is Charizard, then… 1 Mon should be fire type. 1 Mon should be flying or dragon type. 1 Mon should be red. 1 Mon should be in the monster egg group. 1 Mon should be in the dragon egg group.
Resulting team: Charizard, Ninetales, Fearow/Dragonite, Parasect, Nidoking, Seadra

Crystal Gems… The Crystal Gems are all a little unique and have areas where they excel. You may create a team based around a single Gem or all 4*.

Garnet: Tag Team – Garnet is a working combination of 2 gems that are polar opposites. You must have a team of 6 Mons that… Have types that are weak/strong against each other (Fire and Water, or Fairy and Poison for ex.), have colors that are capable of combining (red + blue, yellow + red, black + white), and have 2 mons in the same egg group.

Amethyst: Famethyst – Use Mons from the same egg group of your choosing. Amethyst is considered small/defective for her class of Gem, so your Mons must never be EV trained or given/fed boosting items (berries, iron, rare candy, etc.). You may not use Pokémon Amie, Poke Pelago, the Haircut bros, etc. They may not be given TMs or Megastones and must rely on their natural move pools (HMs are allowed unless you want/need dedicated HM slaves). Exp. Share must be turned off at all times.

Pearl: Do it for Them – Pearl will always put others before herself. You may only shift your party when you enter a town’s Pokémon Center. You must run your team on SET. For each Mon in your party, they must have 3 support moves and 1 STAB damaging move where possible. You may only have the following combinations of types: Ground, Grass, Bug, Ice, and Steel or Water, Electric, Steel, Ghost, and Psychic (you may use Rock to replace Steel types in Gen 1).

Steven: First for Everything – You must catch the first Mon you encounter as soon as Poké balls are available to you. In battle, that Mon is your “Connie” – Steven’s first friend and the sword of duo. That Mon must always go before your starter and may only be switched out upon fainting, HP below 50% + status (poison/paralysis/freeze/burn/etc.), or switching out moves (Baton Pass, Parting Shot, U-turn, Volt Switch). You must breed your “Connie” and starter at the daycare center if they are of compatible egg groups and opposing genders. If incompatible, then you may chain breed, but the final resulting egg must share ancestry between your starter and 2nd Mon. The resulting egg will take over the “Stevonnie” role. Stevonnie must go first and fight until fainting – no matter what, followed by Connie and your starter. In games without daycares, you may catch a Mon that’s in the same egg group as Connie (no dupes). Mons 4, 5, and 6 will be your Lars, Sadie, and Onion. Lars must be a tank (high Def or high Sp.Def). Sadie must have sound/wave based moves and use them first. Onion must have Self Destruct, Explosion, or any other move that causes recoil damage.

*We are the Crystal Gems! – This is a combination of all 4 Gems. You must have a dedicated Tag Team (opposing colors or typings) of 2, an “Amethyst” that’s of a separate egg group and type of the tag team (no TMs/HMs/Megastones/etc.), a “Pearl” that’s in a support role (3 status, 1 STAB), a “Connie” (must not switch out when in battle unless below 50% HP + status, fainting, or switch out move), and a Steven (starter).

This sounds great. It has been a while since we had challenge based on TV series here. There are a lot of Steven Universe's fans of the staff and I think this could make them stop here :D

I should watch Steven Universe too...

Destiny bond(co-op pokemon adventure)

Anyone ever heard of a soul link?
Its a multiplayer nuzlocke challenge...

The first pokemon encountered in a area shares a "destiny bond" with the one the other player encounters in the same area

If one fails capture the other is to be considered dead aswell and cant be used
If it is caught and one of them dies, so does the other and the other person must cease using it immediately and forfeit that pokemon
Only soul linked pokemon are allowed on both teams(with the exception of hm slaves)
If one deposits a soul linked poke, so must the other do so for its counterpart

The fun thing about this is that both players are responsible for each others pokemon, and success
Should you catch a weedle, and your partner a starmie you will have to debate wether its worth keeping a weedle on your team to support your partners starmie
... But is it worth it? Weedle is only going to last that long
Its a whole lotta trouble thats for sure, but so, so much fun

When are you going to soul link?
