Twitter Increasing Character Limit To 280

Well, after years of rumors, it's finally happening. Twitter is increasing the character limit to 280.

I really hate character limits, especially ones as low as that :p good change.

When is this going into effect? I'm still only allowed 140 characters. Is this change only for certain users or something? Are there certain conditions that I haven't met that I need to in order to qualify?

Nonetheless, though, upstart competitor Gab (which I have an account and, but that place has been slammed as being an "alt-right propaganda site") allows for 300 characters in user messages.

Yeah, it's only certain people for right now.

About fucking time.

Hallelujah

Wunkolo September 26th, 2017 7:16 PM

Finally I can post larger ascii art on twitter

Hikamaru September 26th, 2017 8:03 PM

This is a change that we definitely needed. I always found 140 way too small for a character limit so these new changes will be more beneficial to the site, and therefore means better tweets.

Sothis September 26th, 2017 9:37 PM

Finally more characters with which to scream about nothing.

It took them this long for them to finally consider doubling the character limit? I've seen so many people resorting to posting an image of a long tweet, among other tricks to get around it.

A welcome change nevertheless.

tokyodrift September 27th, 2017 6:07 PM

thank god, i no longer have to reply to my own tweet to add more

Zeffy September 27th, 2017 11:44 PM

i used to find twitter's character limit to be a positive thing in that it requires you to concisely express your thoughts, but after actually being on the platform i was quickly proven wrong.

this is definitely a welcome change, though!

The character limit on Twitter was way too short, this is a great improvement.

Starry Windy September 29th, 2017 5:07 PM

Whoa boy, I didn't expected Twitter to raise the character limits, but still, it's a good thing.

Lemonski September 30th, 2017 1:29 AM

It's such a neat change since I can't summarize longer things for the life of me.

EC October 1st, 2017 7:21 AM

Anyone here get the change yet? I'm still at 140.

Hikamaru October 1st, 2017 7:41 AM

I'm in the same case as EC. I'm still at the 140 limit.

I was wondering why I was seeing such long tweets from people lately. Weird.. definitely gonna take some getting used to for me, they're longer than I'd like now but I guess it cuts down on the number of people breaking their novel tweets into 10 different posts haha.
