Mouse or touchpad?
Simple question!
When using a laptop (or even a desktop on certain occasions), do you prefer to move the cursor with a mouse or a touchpad? Which do you feel is easier to use? What are some tasks you might think that one works easier than the other? |
Mouse, I feel like I have more control of the cursor compared to a touchpad
Mouse, I have cursed touchpads to the end of the world since they always work against me.
Mouse, they're more accurate and responsive. I also prefer them when playing any game. I usually just hook one up to my laptop when I'm playing a game.
Touchpad for everything besides playing a game, definitely mouse for games, especially fps games. Have you ever tried to play an fps with a touchpad? It just doesn't work for that... :X
Mouse, its easier to control while touchpads may have confusing button (where the buttons are bundles in the touchpad to right click id hard) and 2 buttons
Because whenever I am on my laptop, I am also on my bed, I use the touchpad.
Not that there's anything wrong with it i think; I've gotten by using it for years without much hindrance. No real need for a mouse. |
I despise touchpads! If I don't have my mouse to use, it really irks me.
Trackball master race.
Mouse all the way, I feel more comfortable with it, but I'm fine with touchpadsas well in some occasions where I can't use a mouse.
I like trackball mice most (it's what I use on my desktop PC), although I do use the touchpad on my laptop over using an external mouse because it's an older laptop, and it's already stupidly big and weighs 3kg without carrying an external mouse/trackball as well.
The touchpad was the first thing that died when I last opened my laptop to clean it. Not that I miss it. At the same time, what am I even saying?
Clearly, it's the keyboard! In the time I moved the mouse over from one side of the screen to the other I already hit a shortcut and got what I wanted. |

I use a mouse. Trackpads are horrid.
Mouse, hands down. While a touchpad is ok in some situations, there's certain things that I do (such as outlining artwork) that require the more precise control afforded by a mouse.
I do prefer having a mouse, for reasons that have already been mentioned. However, as I don't game on my laptops, I'm fine with using the trackpad in most cases. I just hate it when they're unresponsive, laggy, and/or are too far forward. It's also very annoying when the left and right click buttons are not easily distinguishable from the actual pad...
I really like using my touchscreen to scroll down pages and for reading. For playing games on the laptop, I prefer the mouse, since I worry about destroying my touchpad. And for everything else, I use the touchpad.
Trackpad. I do love using a mouse, but I feel like carrying one around is clunky in both that I need to carry around separate hardware and also find space to use it when I'm outside. A trackpad is just simpler.
However, if I'm going to be doing and photo or video editing, then I have to use a mouse. No way I'm using a trackpad for that. |
Mouse is vastly preferable for me. Way better response time and precision.
oh my god I have no idea how people use only the trackpad. It's so slow and uncomfortable. mouse pls
When it comes to laptops, I am honestly fine with using a touchpad. I really do not do any hefty activity that would require beyond a touchpad on my laptop, but for desktops it's definitely a mouse.
Always a mouse. I have a wireless mouse that has outlived three laptops.
I remember trying to play RCT2 with a touchpad. Horrendous. |
For around two weeks I was left without my Magic Mouse and only had my MacBook Pro's trackpad to console me. That was the time I found out what other people meant each time they horned at me about how Apple makes the best trackpad around. Multi-touch gestures makes my interaction with a non-touch screen laptop feel natural and over time my exclusive trackpad usage relieved me of my wrist strains. I think it's the best way to navigate around macOS. I love the trackpad so much I purchased a Magic Trackpad 2 for my iMac at home.
When I used Windows I never thought I'd find the trackpad superior to a mouse. So, very shortly after getting my first MacBook I went straight for a mouse and ignored the trackpad because of my awful experiences with laptop touchpads. Beginning with the 2015 MBPs they've even added force touch functionality into the then-new non-mechanical—just vibrations which feels like a genuine click—trackpad and it got even better. I can do a deep press on any word and it'll bring up definitions, or deep press on any icon in the dock and it'll show any opened windows but that's only two of the available shortcuts force touch introduced with it. To add to that, in the 2016/17 models the trackpad has gotten bigger which is amazing for people like me who use gestures so much. It's the best partner to apps like BetterTouchTool and JiTouch. I got myself a new Magic Mouse after those two weeks and couldn't get back into using a mouse. It suddenly felt unnatural to use the mouse when there's overall less movement involved while using the trackpad that's just right under my keyboard and the gestures are a godsend. Maybe if Apple introduces a new Magic Mouse 3 with more gestures and force touch I'll give it another shot, but as it is now my mouse is reserved solely for graphic design work, very minor gaming, and a degree of film editing. For everything outside those, the trackpad is my go-to. Speaking of film editing, I'm beginning to incorporate my trackpad usage while playing around in Final Cut Pro which is proving to be more precise along with powerful keyboard shortcuts. |
Mouse vs Touchpad false dichotomy? Clit mouses / "trackpoint stylus" all the way.
Not kidding that much. They are mostly comfortable, and feel easier to operate than a touchpad so long as you have sensible mouse buttons somewhere. It helps a lot when you need precise movement, but they lose in the speed department in my experience. More realistically, my preference is corded mouse > clit mouse > wireless mouse > 3DS with left thumb using the remote joypad homebrew > touchpad with physical buttons >>>>>>> touchpad without physical buttons. Arceus how I loathe those last ones. it's like you never know if you are pointing to a thing or clicking somewhere, and you have to two-finger them for the context menu which sucks extra. But what I'm hoping is to get one of those finger-clip 3D mouses that the israeli developed quite some time ago, where you basically just move your hand and you do click via literally clicking your index and thumb together. Dunno how does second button work there, perhaps via pinkie finger. I think they were called owls or something. Never really found good information about them on the web. |
I prefer a mouse because it is much easier for moving the cursor around, lol. :)
