The Wild Sheep Chase - A Dungeons & Dragons adventure
![]() The Wild Sheep Chase A Dungeons & Dragons adventure Welcome to The Wild Sheep Chase, a short adventure for Dungeons and Dragons fifth edition that plays itself in just a few hours. Dive into the world of fantasy and play as a fighter, wizard, cleric or any of the other classes. Lycanthropy, yours truly, will act as the Dungeon Master and tell the story, your story. The party takes a short break between their adventures to enjoy a picnic in the field. Of course, a quiet and peaceful picnic was something they could only have hoped for... What is D&D?Dungeons and Dragons, or D&D, is a fantasy tabletop roleplaying game. In other words, it is a game in which you pretend to be a character in a magical world and go on an adventure. You decide what your character does and how they react. You can actually try to do anything (within reason of course) and occasionally rolls of a die determines the whether you succeed your actions or not. One person, the Dungeon Master (DM), that would be me, tells the story and plays for the monsters and NPCs you come across. I'll tell you whether your actions succeed and how the world reacts to it. A classical pen-and-paper game would of course be difficult to pull off when playing with people from all over the world. Instead we will use the beautiful online software provided on roll20.net (an account is required, but it's free). We will also host a voice call on Discord (also free), where I will literally tell the story. If you are not comfortable talking, don't fret, just hop on and listen in and use the in-game text chat of roll20 to tell us what you want to do. How to play? The Dungeons and Dragons game has a lot of rules, only the first Player's Handbook by itself counts over 300 pages. It may look scary, but in reality it's not that bad. Lots of rules are only important to certain classes, only one of which is interesting to you, and most of what's left is highly situational. If you're able to grasp the basic concepts described below, you're good to go. If anything is unclear, just ask me and I'll gladly explain. Adventuring When you're not locked inside combat, you're free act for your character as you see fit. You can freely talk to each other or NPCs, cast spells and use your skills. Occasionally, you need to make die rolls to check whether your actions succeed. When you come across enemies or challenge an NPC, you enter combat. Combat During combat, everyone (players, monsters and NPCs) takes turns to perform their actions. During each turn, you can do the following things in any order: > Move Action: You can walk up to a number of squares your speed allows. > Action: This includes making an attack, casting a spell, moving again, etc. > Bonus Action: A minor act such as switching your weapon. Some spells require only a Bonus Action to cast and some classes grant other powers that take a Bonus Action as well. In combat you'll usually want to reduce the opponent's HP to zero other otherwise render them unable to battle, while preventing exactly that from happening to you. When combat is over, you get back to adventuring. Making your characterThe two most important choices when making a character are your race and your class. Your class is basically your job. Your class majorly determines what powers you can choose from. Wizards can cast fireballs, fighters a great at handling all weaponry, while rogues excel at trickery and subterfuge. The world of D&D houses many well known fantasy races, such as humans, elves and dwarves, as well as tortles, tabaxi and many other obscure options. Your race grants you bonuses to certain stats and occasionally other powers. Pick one race and one class, along with a background, think a bit on your character backstory and personality traits, and you're readyto play the game. For this one-shot, you'll need a 4th level character. Any of the officially published D&D 5th edition source material is allowed. Please make sure your character is ready to go before the game starts! If you are unsure how to make a character of have any questions, you're always free to hit me up here on the forums or on Discord (Lycanthropy#8817), and I'll gladly walk you through. Sign-upTo sign up, simply state your interest along with your Discord username and the times/days you are available to play. Every adventure is played with a party of about five players. If there is more interest, I'd be happy to open up more time slots. Participating earns your Tribe a Normalium Z (worth 20 points)! We will be playing at the following times (note that the end times are only estimates, completing the campaign might take longer or shorter): Friday July 27th: 5:30 PM CEST Saturday July 28th: 7 PM CEST All times are in CEST! You can use this handy tool to see when we're playing in your local time. |
I think I'll be able to do the Friday one.
|
I've never played before but I'd love to try! I am in PST though and the time slots are not great for me - I'm tentatively down for Friday or Saturday, for the 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM slot, or Saturday/Sunday, for the 6:30 PM - 10:30 PM slot.
edit: already told Lycan, but for reference, something came up on Sunday so that day's no good for me now :< |

else im happy to listen in |
Yooooo this is hype, I'm making the wildest character ever
(up for any day btw) |
Ok I might start creating a character now that i'm interested in this
|
I could do Saturday or Sunday for the 6:30-10:30pm slot, or friday for either 6:30-10:30 or 1:30-5:30 if it was on August 3rd
edit: my discord is DJ#5936 |
A quick bump! Just wanted to say, if there are any beginners out there debating whether or not you should join because you don't know where to start with making your character (like me!), here's a handy dandy quick character generator - you can refine it to your liking if you wish afterwards, but I checked with Lycan and for all intents and purposes it seems to do exactly what we need. :)

Today's game was heaps of fun! I'm excited to see what the next group will do with the situation I'll be throwing at them! :D
|
I like my new hat.
|
I hate his new hat.
|
We didn't get a new hat. Nero might still have an upset stomach though.
Thanks again for the game, Lycan! It was definitely an interesting experience and you do a very convincing crazy wizard voice. :) |

So after defeating the evil wizard, we discovered that we all had awful arcana, and after passing the wand around we all took turns turning the sheep into goo, darker goo, black goo and then finally someone had a lucky roll and turned him back into a wizard. He had nothing to repay us with though, and we were all kind of upset at that so before we left Nero rolled once more and turned him back into goo, which he filled his flask with and drank from. |

I have to say it was really interesting to see the two groups taking a completely different approach to the story.
While the first group just barged in on clear daylight and fought everyone heads-on, the second group spent a lot of time negotiating with both parties to get the best deal out of the situation, and then snuck into the apprentice's bedroom in the midst of the night. I was actually sweating when they were about to simply hand over the sheep to the goliath at the start of the story because "it was none of their business and they just wanted to finish their picnic". |
