The Litter Box
Hello and welcome to the Litter Box! This is the cat lovers club, for people who love all things cats! Whether you have cats of your own, love fictional cats, play a lot of neko atsume, or just wanna look at cat pics and videos, this is the place for you!
Rules & Guidelines
There aren't a whole lot of rules because rules are boring. But please try to follow these so we can have fun discussions that stay on-topic.

BE NICE
Respect everyone else and be positive. Even if someone has the ugliest cat you've ever seen, you had better gush about how much you love it with the rest of us or don't say anything at all. :P
NO SPAMMING PICS (TOO MUCH)
While I desperately want to see every cat photo the internet has to offer, please don't derail conversation by posting off-topic stuff too much! If you wanna share pics, that's great, but also respond to the topic of conversation. :)

I don't think we'll need anything else!
How to Join
Joining is simple: all you have to do is jump right into the discussion and follow the rules.

If you'd like to be added to the memberlist, fill this out! If you don't have any cats or don't want your cats included, just leave that part out. :)

Name/Nickname:

We wanna get to know you so a short introduction when you join is always welcome!

VisionofMilotic July 31st, 2018 5:22 PM

Hi there everybody! I'm really happy to find this club.

Name/Nickname: Sam ^_^
Name(s) of your cat(s): Totoro

I have been a surrogate cat mother for years. I feed the neighborhood strays and also have volunteered to take care of cats at my local Humane Society. I recently found a cat at Aarf who was left on the doorstep in a carrier by an unknown owner. The name he was given was Riggs. His story really got to me and I decided to adopt him, and finally bring a cat into my house long-term and not just as a guest. My adoption application has been approved, so he is legally part of my family now :D His new name is Totoro as in My Neighbor Totoro. He is a big, mellow white and gray cat that is a good fit to Miyazaki's creation.

I can't post a picture yet because I haven't received him. I hope that is okay with everyone. He is still healing and seeing the vet, and needs time to recover before he moves in with me. But when I bring him home no power on earth will stop me from posting a photo of Totoro here :)

professor plum July 31st, 2018 8:58 PM

OMG JANNA AND CAITE WHAT CUTE KITTIES. Erica already knows I think Jude is 2cute. Thanks for making the thread Erica I didn't want to dominate clubs with too many threads :{

Name/Nickname: Tyler/Erik
Name(s) of your cat(s): Smoky Quartz & Jasper
Picture(s) of your cat(s): Here's an album with a billion photos of Smoky Quartz & an album with a billion photos of Jasper.

If we're going to do "Gotcha!!!" stories...
  • We got Smoky on May 1, 2017. It was a few days after we had put down our other cat (due to an advanced case of mouth cancer), and I was just kinda browsing local shelters/rescues/etc. in the area to maybe find another cat. Part of me felt like I should wait, but...it was really rough being home alone without Shadow.

So, on a whim, my friend and I go to PetCo. There are two cats in the cat room - Bullet & Smoky. Bullet is super affectionate, and tries too hard to get attention. Smoky, however, is hiding in the back of her kennel/cage as this couple tries to get her to play with them. They even tried picking her up - and she started howling at them. After they "ooh-ed" and "aww-ed" over Smoky a bit more, they offered me the chance to look at her. I walked up and took the first picture I have in the album for her, and held out my hand. She immediately warmed up to me, and I knew this was the cat we had to adopt.

Meanwhile, the couple was talking to the cat room attendant, asking if they thought Smoky might be there for a few days - they're about to go out of town, and want to adopt her when they get back.

....So, naturally, I send my boyfriend a text message, and tell him that he HAS to come to PetCo the next day to meet this cat.

The rest is history, tbh. She quickly adapted to life in our apartment. She's super vocal, opinionated, and very dramatic. I wouldn't have her any other way.

  • Jasper...was kind of an impulse decision. On October 11, 2017, I was finishing up at the doctor when I got a text message from one of our friends. Turns out, her mom found a kitten in a company truck, and wanted to make sure it got to a good home. My boyfriend initially was against it, but after we saw a picture, he changed his mind.

I picked him up, and immediately took him to PetSmart to get him a few basic necessities.

He peed on me. :( It was gross. But, whatever. He was a timid kitten.

I got him home, gave him a bath, and quickly got him acquainted with the apartment. It took a few days to get him used to being indoors, i.e. using a litter box, etc.

They hated each other at first but now they kinda get along.

Hewwo furreinds~ uwu I'm Rika! I have yin yang cats: one is gray and one is white. And they are both the fluffiest things you have ever seen. I prefer not to share pictures of them here though. Sowwy o///o;; One is Persian and one is British, cute pedigree furrrballs. If you are truly interested, I will show you pictures in private though :3 *glomps*

edit: well i've already posted pics in public of them elsewhere so maybe a few at some point are ok d:

Name/Nickname: Jess
Name(s) of your cat(s): Luna
Picture(s) of your cat(s):

Her name isn't actually meant to be a reference to anything, it was just a name we liked that we found off a list of "good names for gray cats" and didn't think of the implications until after, oops.

She's two years old as of sometime last month, and it's been nearly a year since we adopted her from a local animal shelter after I tragically lost my previous cat. She likes strings, plastic bags, and watching the local wildlife that likes to congregate right outside our windows.

Astinus August 1st, 2018 2:50 PM

Well, first off... Thank you for reminding me of Neko Atsume! I haven't checked that app in forever. My poor cats...

Secondly, everyone has such adorable cats! They're so sweet, and such beautiful creatures. Give them all some pets for me.

Name/Nickname: Astinus
Name(s) of your cat(s): Pretzel and Nova
Picture(s) of your cat(s):

I got them both on the same day, which was two days after my first cat passed away. Got them from the same place I got my first cat, which was nice. Originally, Nova (the tabby) was supposed to be my cat; Pretzel (the Siamese) was supposed to be for my mother. Except Pretzel was attached to me from the very first moment (wouldn't leave me alone no matter how much I tried). So both cats are mine. They follow me all over the house.

Speaking of games, I am addicted to Cat Condo. It's ridiculous, it's basically Cookie Clicker. But they're cute!

I uhh...never have actually played any cat-related games. D: I think I downloaded the one big popular one but never..actually..opened the app. '-';

Yippee! Now I can complete my application to be a member success at last today! This is my new cat Totorro. This photo was hard to come by because he is very camera shy, it took me three days to get a picture where he wasn't running away the moment he saw a camera. Most of my photos are shots of his tail as he turns to flee.

Totorro is very affectionate, gentle and calm. I don't think he could scratch anyone on purpose. He is also quite humble, when offered shrimp or scallops he takes a pass for a regular bag of dry cat food to eat instead. He has two different cat beds, but would rather sleep in a shoe box in my closet! I also bought him a fancy jungle gym to play on with a built in scratching post, but he is happiest rolling an old ball back in forth that came from his kennel at the animal shelter. That is my modest cat. He does show an unexpected aide and cut loose at night time though. You can count on Totorro after sleeping all day to wake up at 3:00 am then meow and dance around the room, hopping from one piece of furniture to the next and bounce his ball around and deprive you of a good night's sleep! He is a night owl, his personality in the morning and personality at night is as different as well... night and day lol.

To use your own words... you have no life. Maybe I should go with the Have no life club. Cute cat pictures btw.

Also because I have no life, something funny.

Oh my god!!! BABY!!!!!! HE'S SO CUTE SOBBBBBB. How's he doing now? <33

LOL @ preferring dry kibble to shrimp or scallops. I'm sure one day he'll learn to appreciate the finer things in life instead of going for what's tried and true, ahahaha. (My Jude, on the other hand, ignores what's in his food bowl if he's decided what's on your plate is more interesting--whether it's typical cat-friendly food or not, orz.)

I hope he is still adjusting well! Please keep us updated!!!

Neko Atsume best game. ;o; For about a year before I finally got Jude, I projected hard onto the cats in this game because I so desperately wanted a pet. As dumb as it is, they got me out of a tough time. I legit might get a Playstation VR this year so I can play the virtual reality version because wtf cute!

Also AHHHH YOUR KITTIES. LMAO Pretzel looks like he (she?) has Nova in a headlock ahahaha.

ooh, I haven't played that but it sounds right up my alley. I'll have to check it out! Another fun mobile game related to cats is called Purrfect Spirits. It's a really cute game that takes a few days to complete. It's kinda like Neko Atsume but with plot. (Idk if it's available on iOS though...)

And loool house cats evolved from African Wildcats which had really short hair, so your floofballs are genetic anomalies that are certainly not used to the heat. (However I bet they fare much better in the cold winters than their ancestors would have. :P)

I'll add one more thing. If you were to recommend a Cat breed, which one would you recommend? My mother loves Russian Blue but I'm curious as to what you all would pick(or do you even care what you get)?

I specifically wanted a ragdoll when I finally got a cat. They're often called puppy cats because they're super affectionate (they'll greet you at the door, follow you from room to room, etc.) and they're super chill. They get really big though. My Jude was supposedly a ragdoll, but I didn't get him from a legitimate breeder or anything and didn't see his parents, so I have a feeling he was only half-ragdoll. He's not floofy like a standard ragdoll is and he has pink ears instead of pointed ears, but he has all the other traits I wanted and I kinda prefer him with shorter fur so he's been an absolutely perfect match for me. :3c

If I didn't get a ragdoll, I wanted a munchkin cat. They're like, uh, corgis of the cat world, with short stubby little legs. I think they're absolutely adorable LOL.

I originally thought that I wouldn't mind what breed of cat to get, but after owning one... I adore Siamese cats. They're really affectionate, following the owner all over the house and wanting to sit on laps all the time or be close-by. They're also very vocal, talking way more than other cats. But I like having an affectionate pet that wants to be around me (like a dog) but doesn't require as much care as a dog.

Haha, just this afternoon they were play-fighting, and it's really difficult for Pretzel to get close to Nova. Nova's legs are much longer than Pretzel's, so she has an advantage!

Both my kitties are girls.

(Good luck on the job search!)

Yes, munchkins are adorable!
Siamese too...honestly, all cats are good. <3

@Erica yeah I put Ellie down on her vet records so I'll be going with that. If I get another cat (or dog lol) it'll be yet another female that I'll name Lulu. -silly-
She's getting along v well =') My cat adjusted right away, it was totally safe to have her sniff the kitten and even let her out of the carrier in the first hour. Within 24 hours they were already sleeping next to each other. I'm happy to have such a good cat lol.

Siamese was the other breed my mother was considering, if she was to get a Cat that is. They haven't had a pet for roughly 18 years. They had a Pharaoh Hound that lived to be 15(beyond the breed's expected lifespan, although the final year or two were tough on him). Early in his life though, he broke through the patio screen door and chased a burglar over the fence(and followed him over said fence by leaping over its 6' height). I don't think Cats can do that :t037:

Fairy August 15th, 2018 3:45 PM

I've got a soft spot in my heart for Ragdolls and Norwegian Forest Cats, personally! <333

But I can fall in love with any cat regardless of breed too. n_n

I don't have any cats, but I do like them, have a cat like dog, am a MAJOR Hello Kitty fan (will you count that?), and cats were generally my favorite animals as a little girl (especially cuz they had a lot of traits i found admirable...xD like always knowing who they are and where they stand in life ^_^ i was a VERY insecure child, so i really valued how strong these animals appeared as to me.....for all i know, they could even be a major reason why i've grown up to love and respect cute things so much xD).

May I please join? :3 Plus it might be fun to learn about other peoples cats.

what a fluffy precious cutie....

I should brush my gray kitty daily tbh, she's been shedding a lot since it's so hot. She loves the brush so much too, will rub her face against it and everything! it's supa cute

Fairy August 26th, 2018 3:10 PM

So for those of you who don't know, I volunteered at a cat rescue shelter for a very long time. And I was just randomly looking through my phone today and found pictures of some of the cuties that I fell in love with most. Of course, I wanted to take every single one of them home but couldn't. So I did my best to make sure they were happy and played with and as comfortable as possible. Easily one of my most favorite jobs ever. Here's a snapshot of just some of few that brought joy to my heart.

Warning, some of the images are very low quality due to them either being afraid of the camera or they had bars / glass / objects in the way.

Hyzenthlay August 30th, 2018 1:04 PM

Hello I'm Hyzenthlay and I've fallen madly in love with everyone's cats! Too much precious, must kidnap.

Name/Nickname: You can call me either Hyzen or Clover :)
Name(s) of your cat(s): N/A *sob* Previous cats were called Stumpy, Billabong, Bessy/Bestette, and Yoko!
Picture(s) of your cat(s): I have... maybe two of Stumpy. The others are missing atm. :'c Anyway, here's a photo of Stumps, bless her! <3

More about me! I've always had the greatest fondness for felines, to an extent that would weird out anyone who isn't a cat lover! I'm even hoping to build a collection of porcelain cats. :) I adore all breeds (and moggies too), whether they be fluffpots, goofballs, hairless, fat, sleek, or grumpy. Offer me a winner of the Ugliest Cat contest, and I'll still swoon! ♥

The story of my previous cats (apart from Stumpy) is long and painfully sad, so I won't burden anyone with it. I'll just talk about my good memories of them, beginning with Stumpy!

Stumpy was a moggie with qualities reminiscent of a Maine Coone. She was so called for her little stump of a tail, the fur of which was long and fanned out, and it'd look so cute when she flicked it. Due to this deformity however, the owners were intending to drown her as a kitten! This was before I was born, but my mum had the heart to save the poor dear. Apparently Stumpy was quite the noisy troublemaker in her youth! :')

Growing up, she was like a nanny to me; stern, but with a kindly warmth, always keeping watch. She seemed to have a sense of knowing when I was sad, and would always cuddle against me, purring, in order to cheer me up. Even though my siblings and I harmlessly teased her as children (there were countless funny moments), she'd forgive us every time! And at Christmas, she behaved uncharacteristically kitten-like, making happy "mrow-mrow-mrow!" sounds and dancing around the presents, snuggling everyone! She was also very fussy and constantly changed her preferences, as cats do. xD

Stumps was highly intelligent but terrified of strangers! If anyone she wasn't familiar with rocked up, she'd tore through the house and hide where no-one could find her! Sometimes she'd disappear in the bush for days on end. Anyway, there's one particular thing I could never get my head around... she had this scary sixth sense of knowing who was coming up the driveway. As in, she could guess the person in the car without them even being close. You'd expect her to flee at an unfamiliar vehicle, no matter the driver. But somehow she always knew exactly who was in it, remaining calm if she recognised them. Haha, I swear cats are psychic.

Ah, but all this was a while ago now. Stumpy passed away in August 2014, at eighteen and a half years old. Until that time, she never had trouble with her health, and had only been to the vet once. Thankfully the days preceding her departure were warm, sunny and full of birdsong. She liked that. Bless you, Stumps. You'll always come alive in my memories. <33

Traits:
  • Stumpy loved nothing more than sleeping by the heater or in the sun
  • She often walked into glass doors
  • She hated other cats, especially those with long tails
  • She was scared/jealous of other animals and ran for dear life from a friendly guinea pig (who thought Stumpy was her mum lmao)
  • She didn't like being picked up
  • Was comically grumpy-looking in her old age
  • Never locked eyes with you
  • Went crazy and made Puss in Boots eyes whenever meat was cooking
  • If you were lucky, she'd sit on your lap or your bed and sleep
  • Would always find a way inside in order to leave us a nice "present" when we were away (usually between the floorboards or on my mum's best blouse)
  • Acted like a giant weight was on top of her if you so much as placed a leaf or a pebble on her back xD
  • Sometimes her tongue would stay poking out when she groomed herself
  • Had the heart of a thousand lions. Well, scaredy-cat lions, but still

Sheep August 30th, 2018 6:42 PM

Jo, those pictures absolutely melt my heart.

@Clover: What a precious kitty....and I'm of course sorry to read about your previous cats. ; ; Eighteen is quite a lot for a cat, we got my oldest in '05 or '06 and he just passed recently. Stumpy definitely had a great life with you. <3

Do you guys ever take your cats outside on a leash?

I take Missy out to let her eat grass and get fresh air.

Bailey a cat we had before we had to put him down I swear he was part dog. I use to take him outside all the time and I live downtown before moving and would take him to the parade every year and people loved seeing him. People weren't use to seeing a cat and he'd be the talk of the parade.

Cats on a leash. You deserve a medal because Cat owners where I live certainly don't care where they go if let out of the house. We had two neighborhood Cats that would invade our front yard and backyard to do their "business" while attacking the various birds that like to visit the birdbath and Hummingbird feeders. One day we found one of our Hummingbird feeders on the ground broken so the fact you put your Cats on a leash... kudos to you.

Any tips for handling a curious cat when they find a place to perch that is not so good for them?

My Totoro has adjusted beautifully to his new home. He is affectionate, surrounded by toys and loves water, fascinated with the fountain at home and even just running water in the kitchen sink. He gives a friendly leg rub to every guest and even has a polite relationship with the family dog and will sleep near him. He enjoys batting my Pyrenees Prince's tail around with his paws as if it is a fish dangling from a rod. My big cat is a sucker for a dog's wagging tail.

Like all cats he likes to climb up on top of stuff. There are plenty of places that are safe for him to go like on top of my bed for a rest, but his eye is fixed on my nightstand and he is determined to find a seat on it daily. I have taken away as many valuables as I can, safely storing them so he can't get to them and break them, though it it pained me to keep my beautiful porcelain dolls now locked behind cabinets out of his reach since I loved to have them all around my room and play with them.

However, there are some things like a table lamp that I do kinda have to keep in plain sight so that they can function. I hold my breath as my kitty cat attempts to conquers these areas reguatly. I tell Totoro no, pick him up and take him down consistently and try to find him another area of the home to play or distract him with a toy. However, this is not a complete solution, its not uncommon for him to try to get right back up 1 minute later after he was taken away from a place he wanted to be. He's a stubborn boy.

Tonight he jumped on my table and knocked over my laptop. Fortunately I kept it stored in a padded case so it should be okay, but still I need a new plan.

I read that there were certain scents like lavender and rosemary that cats didn't care for, and adding them to an area that you want to keep safe would deter them. I tried that, picking vases full of herbs from my garden, but Totorro just hopped up on the table and ate the herbs!

Some say aluminum foil placed over the surface will keep a kitty away because their paws will no be comfortable with this odd texture, but that isn't my cat for sure! He actively seeks aluminum foil from the kitchen and has managed to claw open rolls of foils and play with the sheets.

I know that some people spritz cats with water for undesired behavior, but I don't want him to become afraid of me so I don't like this idea. I want to be as patient as I can. I also don't think it would even work because my baby adores water.

This is clever, busybody cat who can figure out how to open doors with his dexterous little paws. Does anyone have any advice to offer to allow the cat to move but help us decrease the chances for accidents? Anything.

This is absolutely precious! I'm so happy to hear!!

I've never experienced what it was like to have a proper socialized, indoor-born and raised cat. My previous cat was found outdoors and stayed 98% outdoors until his passing, same with the cat before that. My current older female is indoors but was born outside and still shows shyness and is quick to hide at unfamiliar things or people.

but man this kitten is so social haha. first time I've had a cat climb on the kitchen table and lick things like cheese, since my other cats have always stuck to their canned or dry food. she almost ate a chopped peanut that fell from my candy apple and i was [email protected][email protected]

Cats will always be eternally fascinating.

Even bad effects like the one in my sig.

No cats in my household, but that doesn't mean I don't have a lot in my life, like this little guy down the street:

Sheep September 13th, 2018 5:28 PM

omg I love him !
Lots of feral cats where I live and some are incredibly fluffy and cute (though I love all cats). do you guys have ferals in your neighborhood?

Caite-chan September 13th, 2018 7:08 PM

The funny thing is most of our cats we have found outside and they have been indoor cats. The only time they would go outside is if I took them out on a leash.

Sheep September 14th, 2018 5:38 PM

that is good. <3 I do not let my cats go outdoors. My adult girl used to go out but came back two years ago one day with a horrendous flea infestation that took us months to eradicate, so never again. Nowadays she is indoors-only but I still give her Advantage every month just in case she sneaks out somehow. Plus it makes me feel better since those memories still horrify me lol.

VisionofMilotic September 15th, 2018 6:55 AM

I just found the cure to get my kitty cat to relax when he is hyper and wants to hang from the blinds, dance on table tops and sing a loud operatic tenor of meows. My boy loves this music. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=BvX2w48xcNo

I have tried a lot of these music channels for cats and he didn't respond to any of them until I found this one. He just loves this sing, after it plays for a few moments I always find him hopping up on my bed and curled up beside me fast asleep. This is his lullaby.

Sheep September 15th, 2018 8:51 AM

I'm going to give that music a try when mom is done vacuuming! lol
Kitten is being insanely hyper and won't sleep :<

Some people wanted to see updated photos of my kitten (who is four months old now), so I took some btw:

I wanted to ask some questions about general cat care. This is my first cat with longer hair, and even with daily brushing I am noticing a whole lot of matted hair on poor Totoro.

I have a variety of different brushes and use some Burt's Bees cat wipes that have a collodial oat-based formula for soothing skin. They are supposed to remove dander, and I thought this would be a gentler way to help my cat clean areas he misses while self-grooming. I also sometimes sponge him of with a damp face cloth. Ocassionally he gets some baby powder too. However, all of this has been woeful insufficient for his mane of charcoal and white hair, and I feel sad finding matted clumps of hair up under his tummy.

As many dogs and cats don't want full-scale baths more than needed, I was hoping for something to help me keep my cat well-groomed at all times. Can anyone give me some tips to combat matting? Maybe a dry shampoo product you know of, a home remedy, will try anything. Come to our rescue please, kitty needs you!

Caite-chan October 13th, 2018 2:42 PM

I know this will suck but sometimes you may just need to brush him more than once a day. I know mine loved to be brushed and I use a wire brush and comb. I really wish I could show you because I'm horrid at explaining things...lol.

When I worked at the dog groomers when we would get a matted dog that wasn't to bad I would brush up on the mat and try to get most of it out and then take the comb through it. Its almost like brushing in the opposite direction but more of an up stroke.

I myself have never had long haired cats but sometimes I'll use a used dryer sheet to help cut down on the static in their fur and it makes them smell nice too.

Sheep October 13th, 2018 6:14 PM

I'd be interested in hearing some tips myself. Lately my older gray kitty has been getting small chunks of matted fur in her armpit area, and occasionally in other places on her belly. I'm trying to keep up with brushing her as much as I can which definitely helps reduce the matted fur but there are probably other things I could be doing to help prevent it. idk? :droplet:

professor plum October 24th, 2018 9:11 AM

I brush Jasper a few times a week, just because he sheds a lot, too. Luckily his hair doesn't get matted and he generally likes it. From what I've read, though, sometimes changing a cat's diet can improve its health?

Caite-chan October 24th, 2018 9:50 AM

They may hate it but you may want to try getting the armpit areas shaved just to help keep the matting down.

R.I.P Mimi

https://i.postimg.cc/fyC2r2jT/print-original.jpg

I have always had a soft spot for feeding stray animals. When I was a kid I found an injured Siamese cat with only three legs, trying to nurse what was left of her litter. I fed her until she was big and healthy again, and called her Mimi. Her kitten Puck also grew strong and fearless.

Mimi was immediately remarkably trusting for a feral or abandoned cat. She was always peaceful and sweet. I would go so far as to say I've never met a nicer cat. She was also very pretty in spite of the injuries she suffered. She was poised and wise, and a doting, dedicated mama.

Not long after finding this cat family my mother and I had to move away to a residence that did not allow us to bring any pets. So I called up my younger cousin and gave Mimi and her kittens to her. She was 7, and super excited at the opprtunity to have pets.

I was told yesterday by my aunt that Mimi, the matriarch of their noble cat clan passed on from old age. Its been almost 15 years since I first found Mimi wandering the streets. I'm sad to see her go of course, she was such an angel. At the same time though, at least there is some comfort in the fact that her life came to a natural end and she had everything that she needed. I'm glad that she was able to have food, shelter, love, healthcare, some time with her kittens and lived out her life span.

You were wonderful to know Mimi! Everyone was charmed by you. You will be missed! Run free with my late German Shepard Shaney, and my rabbit Powderpuff in in that enchanted forest in the sky. My grandparents will be there to show you the way, pet you and feed you treats, and you can see old cat friends and family again. I love you!

I wanted to start a conversation and see what cat breeds members consider among the most beautiful. I hope that is alright.

I think the most beautiful cat is the Russian Blue, also my favorite breed overall for her intelligence and that gentle, refined temperament she is known for.

VisionofMilotic August 1st, 2019 9:29 AM

Okay, it has been awhile, so let me update.

I have come here because I need some help from fellow friends of cats. I will start by telling you that I have next door neighbors who are very careless. They litter quite a bit, leaving empty soda cans in their yard that blow into ours. They play loud music. They also have pets that they let run loose in the street unattended. My neighbors play games on their iPhones as the dogs chase the mail man and use the bathroom in the yards all over our neighbors. They are not the most conscientious of people.

Anyway, for the last few months a pretty black cat also began wandering the neighborhood. He looks like a Bombay to me. My neighbors say it is their cat. They never mentioned what his name was, so I call him Salem inspired by the cat from Sabrina the teenage witch. My mother would occasionally feed him a cat treat when he wandered into our yard lost. I was a little reluctant to feed another person's cat, worrying about diet and allergies, but when my mom noticed that the cat looked really scrawny and malnourished and said that she could see his rib cage, we decided to start regularly leaving food for Salem. I don't think my neighbors are feeding him.

They also don't give him adequate shelter. We never see him go inside into their home, and there's no cat house or outdoor shelter arranged anywhere in sight for him. He just is left out in the street rain or shine. Whether the weather is dangerously hot or a bad storm nobody takes care of him. I would happily let Salem visit inside my house to protect him since they don't seem to care where he goes. But because I have pets of my own I can't let a cat I don't know come into the home as it doesn't look like my neighbors give him medical care, if they're not feeding him regularly than he probably doesn't have the vaccinations he needs, and I can't risk infecting the pets in my own house. Salem doesn't even wear a flea collar or have a license.

I was gonna build or buy a dog/ cat house, and sit it on my front porch so that he always has a place to go. It isn't my responsibility, but I just can't stand to see Salem left out in a storm.

They are bad pet owners. When the cat comes around to rub against their leg or meow to say hi they will ignore him and shoo him away annoyed. It is really so sad, especially since Salem is a sweet cat. I can walk up to him and pet him, he'll meow to me and purr, roll over on his back and rub against my leg. He has attached very fast to me.

Two days ago while my neighbors enjoyed a cook out in their yard a strange, stray appeared and attacked Salem. The neighbors took no notice. I heard the cats screeching and I ran out and parted the two. The stray cat ran off, and Salem chased after him in pursuit. I could not follow where they went.

I saw Salem again today, and the side of his face was badly swollen as if he had been punched in the jaw. I presume it came from the attack from the stray cat. I felt so bad seeing him injured, and want to take him to the veterinarian. It is infuriating that the neighbors still do nothing.
I have thought of just picking him up and taking himself to the vet, and paying whatever medical bills. I have also considered contacting animal control because I think I may be able to make a case of animal neglect/ cruelty to them.

I am at the same time hesitant to go to animal control though because the state animal control in my community euthanizes most of the animals they receive. They don't have resources to take care of all the animals and put to sleep about 70℅ of the animals they get. If nobody claims a lost pet in 72 hours(?) or adopts them from their program than they can be put down. So I am scared to take Salem there.

There are some non-profit animal shelters in my community like Aarf that are no-kill, so Salem would definitely be safe there. However, it is officially a legal issue if I remove a cat that someone else claims ownership of, only animal control can take a pet that is supposed to belong to someone on grounds of abuse. You can surrender a pet of your own that you can't take care of bring in a stray cat or dog that you found to Arf or the Humane Society, but if someone else is claiming ownership they are not supposed to be involved. That's the job of the city.

I am not sure what to do. Should I just leave it alone and try to look out for him next door as best I can? Or should I bring in animal control? I am worried he will be euthanized by animal control, but I am also worried he might be killed on the streets either hit by a car, attacked again by another animal, drink some antifreeze or some other poisonous substance of heaven knows what. I have also thought about asking my neighbors if they would be willing to sell the cat to me? They may not agree though.

What do you guys think would be best? If you have any other ideas I haven't thought of then please share.

Sheep August 1st, 2019 10:19 AM

Okay maybe this is a rash suggestion, but....if they truly don't take care of that precious sweetheart at all, would they notice if you took him away as your own? I'd probably get the cat looked at by the vet and then take him if people were clearly neglecting the animal to the point where they wouldn't care or notice if he disappears. I'm so, so sorry. Reading this depresses me so much. I can always help a bit with the vet bills if you need it too. Animals don't deserve this. /:

Thank you for caring about animals Jana! It is sad to see our loving, beautiful and intelligent friends in the animal kingdom treated this way. This cat would bring a lot of people happiness. The folks next-door are not only neglecting him, but they are standing in the way of him having a good life with someone else.

The same neighbors actually had a dog that disappeared on them. I just assumed it got lost since their pets regularly run loose through the neighborhood unsupervised and havw no collars or license to identify them. The neighbors had the audacity to complain that someone had stolen the dog. Truth be told, that would be a blessing for the animal if that turned out to be the case.

Since they grumbled about their dog before, despite the poor care, I think they might strike the same attitude over the cat.

My mom has a theory that the neighbors have attracted rats because they litter so much and have clutter everywhere. She thinks they bought a cat they don't care about just to deter rodents, and want their furry alarm system around. Whatever the case, they don't deserve to have pets.

People like you who care still make a difference though. For every bad owner, there's an animal lover like Sheep. Thank you for offering help with his vet bills! That is incredibly kind, but I think I can manage, don't worry. One more mouth to feed at this point doesn't make that much difference. My hope is that I can charm the so-called "owners" into giving me the cat, or buy them off.

If they want to insist that they are the owners though I don't know what I should do. I am not even sure if I can prove Salem has been neglected now because I have been caretaking him and his health has improved. It is a sticky situation.

Sheep August 6th, 2019 4:29 AM

Gah that's so sad. I don't even know what else to say, because like you I'm stumped. Maybe a community dedicated to cats with many people who have experience in animal neglect and fostering can help, like TheCatSite? Anything to get that poor boy away from these rough conditions. D:

Fairy August 7th, 2019 3:38 AM

I've met some wonderful cats lately!! An acquaitance has two Sibirian kittens 😍 they're silky fluffy and super playful.

I've considered getting a Devon or Cornish Rex next time I'm getting a cat (which likely won't be for a loooong time). I don't know how easy they are to find in my country though. But supposedly they don't leave much hair xD which would be oh so nice...

VisionofMilotic March 18th, 2020 6:03 PM

I normally have my cat's litter shipped to me monthly, along with his pet food and other goodies. My order will not be arriving on time this month because of the pandemic, it's coming a few days later, which is understandable. My cat ran out of litter yesterday, but I have been nervous about going into stores because of the risk of COVID19. There are cases of the virus in my town, and I try to avoid areas with large crowds to reduce the chances of it being transmitted. I am having as much delivered to my door as I can right now. I found some instructions online to make homemade cat litter that is free and environmentally friendly. I just need baking soda, dish soap and a newspaper, all of which I have. I am shredding up the paper and giving this stuff a try until my pet products arrive this weekend hopefully. If it's any good I will share the the tip here. Maybe something nice will come out of a difficult time.

Take care everyone.

A naked cat sounds funny! Is it this breed by any chance, the Sphynx? I have heard it said that these cats were bred to look like this to provide pet owners with a hypoallergenic feline companion.

Yeah a Sphynx :) they're supposedly pretty healthy and very affectionate! Plus, less hair ahah.

VisionofMilotic March 22nd, 2020 7:40 PM

I have heard they are brave and friendly cats. Once I saw a program on various cat breeds I think on Animal Planet, one segment followed a truck driver who was always on the go driving across country for long, late lonely hours and days. His companion was a lively Sphinx who rode passenger's side with him.

Hello everyone I haven't posted for two years because I kind of forgot about the club but.... I went through everyone's post and updated the member list. :why: I have now subscribed and it will not happen again sob.

As for current topic...! I've always been kinda iffy on hairless cats because they've always creeped me out a bit, but I discovered a few years ago that spots in a cat's fur show up as coloured spots on the skin of hairless/nearly-hairless cats and that's so endearing??? I still don't think I could have one (gosh, jude would be so flabby without all his fluff to hide just how big he is 😅)

Also sphinxes in little knitted sweaters is an absolute aesthetic. I mean, just look at this!!!

Does anyone know a Norwegian Forest cat? I keep telling people that I think my cat Ward could be one. I was told at Aarf when I adopted him that he was your run-of-the-mill domestic medium/long hair, but after flipping through different cat books I own and stumbling on some pictures of Wegies I am not so sure that he might not have a mixture of this breed somewhere in his ancestry. People dismiss me when I mention this, saying you don't find a breed like that in a shelter. They're expensive. I agree that is unexpected but in my experience volunteering at dog and cat shelters some beloved breeds have turned up there from time to time. I saw Yorkies last time I volunteered at the Humane Society.

This feline friend just showed up outside the door step of Aarf in a carrier, and we will never know where he came from. I can help but wonder now because I spot a lot of the features attributed to this breed like a ruff and plumed tail, tufts on the ears, large size, longer hair, but all in a subtly there way, not a pure bred but maybe still a trace of the Wegie. His personality also fits the bill. Norwegian Forest cats are known to be curious explorers, more chill and friendly than other cats, they are great mouse catchers, and like water. My cat is all of these things.

This is my boy Ward.

This is the cat that I sometimes wonder he might be.

Is there any resemblance, or am I nuts?

I know this feeling. I also don't know the breed of my cat either. Not much is really known about her because she was somewhat of a rescue, seeing how her original owner didn't want her/couldn't take good care of her. Anyway, some people think she could be Calico... but she doesn't have the same patterns and such. I've been speculating some breeds that she could be and what not. She also has heterochromia; one blue eye and one yellow. Here's a pic of her of anyone wants to take a guess at her breed. I'm all ears as to what you all think. :3

Thank you for sharing this information about your kitty cat. I'm not an expert on calico cats, but I do know that there are multiple patterns of calico, and I have seen some that are in splotches around the head like that, also calicos interestingly almost always female because cats need X two chromosomes to produce a certain coloration, or so I read.

What got my attention the most though was that you said your cat had one yellow and one blue. That detail makes me think of a few very specific breeds.

Before I say more though, does your cat have a big bushy tail, average, short? I didn't get a good look at the her tail because of the way she was positioned, and that part of the body might be a clue.

She's a lovely cat in any case, and you guys are lucky to have found eachother ^_^

Just an average tail. Nothing special. I don't have many pics of her where her tail shows. :( It's mostly like... black I think?

Maybe your cat could have a little Calico Turkish Van like this one here? I am more accustomed to seeing red tabby patterns for that breed, but there's lots of different color schemes and evidently a black variant too.

I have noticed that gold and blue eyes are common with this breed, and sometimes they do have one of each.

So just a guess. Whatever your precious kitty is she is special and beautiful.

Sorry to hear that you've been down. I hope you feel better. I have been meaning to post a cute pet video I watched of a cat and dog going through a domino obstacle course. If this has been a sad week I definitely want to share now and maybe lift the spirits with a little something short but sweet.

Whenever I see vids like this, all I can think of is how poorly my cat would do. Jude has no spatial awareness. He thinks he fits in the smallest spaces when he just doesn't. He'd definitely knock down all the dominoes he tried to walk through. Definitely more like the dog than the cat. 😂

I had some issues getting my cat's monthly litter supply again. This time Amazon clowned around and delivered my order to another address in a whole different state. So my new order was almost a week late, and I had to stretch what I had since I am still in quarantine.

Earlier this year when I had a late order of kitty later I tried a method I found online that involved newspaper/ junk mail, dishwashing liquid/ soap and baking soda... But I wasn't crazy about that one after trying it.

The product turned out alright, it smelled okay and looked like litter I guess, resembled some of the clay-based formulas I have used, but it was more tedious to make than it should have been. I had to meticulously shred stacks of paper, the paper needed to soak for several hours, and then dry for several more. It is not really practical in a pinch because it can take all day to make. Also even if you make what you think is a large amount often it boils down to being just only a little, barely enough to cover the litter pan for one day. So I didn't want to use this method a second time. It was just more trouble than it was worth.

So I tried something new yesterday and the day before to deal with the litter shortage. I shook the last few ounces of my usual cat litter formula out of the bag into the litter box. Since it wasn't going to be enough I went out into my back yard and gathered leaves and herbs to crumble and mix as a special emergency litter. We happen to have bushes of lots and lots of lemon grass several feet high. So I gathered arms full of the stuff, and shredded it to bits and made a big grassy bed for my cat in the litter box. It turned out surprisingly well. It doesn't track, it's very absorbent. It was quick and simple, and it makes the room smell just wonderful. It's a fragrant, clean, fresh, bright scent all day. It deodorizes better than any litter that I have bought. It smells like spring. I heard that cats respond well to this herb, and that it has similar qualities to catnip. When I pick lemon grass leaves now he immediately notices, and rubs his face against them. He loves the smell like I do! I read that lemon grass is also good for people. It's evidently calming, and come to think of it I feel really pleasant lately.

So I think we have turned a bad situation into something good. The overdue bag of kitty litter finally arrived this weekend, and I put it in my cat's litter box, but still sprinkle bits of lemon grass in my cat's litter regularly just as a freshener from now on, even though I don't need too.

Have you tried Chewy? My boyfriend and I have automatic orders that come every six weeks or so with cat food and litter. It winds up being a bit cheaper than just buying it one bag at a time or randomly at the store. That's still p neat re: lemon grass - I might have to look into growing some .

i'm going to be ordering my next set of flea treatment from chewy! i've always gotten it from amazon at this point but going by reviews there have been times where they sent bad batches. chewy seems more trustworthy in that regard. on that note, if anyone knows of any good flea products that are safe + work and last longer than a month, let me know! it's tiring to reapply drops every month for me, especially since my cats run as soon as i reach for the bag haha. D:

VisionofMilotic May 17th, 2020 9:37 PM

Grow lemon grass! First it's really hardy, and grows really easy and big and tall! Second if my cat's an indicator then felines just adore it. Then it not only smells minty fresh and was handy to line a litter box with, but it has lots of other good uses, it's calming and used in aromatherapy and teas. It's also anti-bacterial and deters mosquitos. Any extra protection we can get right I'd say is a score this summer.

I have heard some really good things about Chewy! My mom buys from them regularly. Since they also get a gold star from Tyler I'll be bookmarking their website for the future. Let me know how your order of flea medicine goes also Jana, and if your thumb is up to. Volunteers I have met at the animal rescue shelter Arf have also told me that Chewy donates a lot to them like food, and litter boxes, toys, furniture. So that makes me want to patronize them.

I usually buy my cat food and litter from Amazon since I happen to be a prime member. Shipping is supposed to be free 1-2 days for me so I take advantage of that and use the autoship option, but with the crisis going on right now delivery dates have become a game of Russian roulette, so It nice to be reminded of other options like Chewy. I do need to have to try them eventually!

Since I got a cute picture of your boi being grumpy I have to tag you back. Here's my kitty giving lonely Mimikyu some love. I love to cuddle with the crochet myself, but didn't have the heart to take it from him! <3

Cherrim May 18th, 2020 8:13 AM

I wish Chewy existed in Canada. :( I've always heard such good things about it, but it's US-only. We only JUST got online shipping from PetSmart (its parent company) here in the latter half of last year, so I don't think it's likely to happen.

@Janna: have you looked into flea collars? I don't know how long they last or if they're even viable (I usually only see the terrible brands when I'm walking through, like, grocery stores) but if more respectable companies make them, I imagine they'd either last longer than the drops or at least be easier to deal with once a month. Jude also runs as soon as he sees me take out the Advantage and then sulks away from me for 24h after I administer it each month so I understand your pain, lol.

Sheep May 18th, 2020 11:37 AM

Yeah I have this one bookmarked but still dk since I dunno if the cats will just get it off. My older cat is at least more used to collars since she wore hers for years (but hasn't worn one in the last year or so since she transitioned to entirely indoors), but the younger one probably would scratch at it for a while lmao. And 9% of reviews being 1-star kind of concerns me. Still, will think about it!!

okay i've watched this a few times over and have to show it here because i love it so much!

VisionofMilotic June 7th, 2020 9:38 PM

It's late at night/early morning and I am growing suspicious that my cat is hunting a mouse. I'm really scared of mice T_T

My cat meowed a little while ago. That in itself isn't an uncommon occurrence for him at night, in fact it happens almost every single night. He often wants a midnight snack and meows to wake me up to feed him. At first, I did not cross my mind that he might be meowing about something else because it's so routine, and so I rolled out of bed to feed the cat like normally. Usually when he wants food he keeps meowing incessantly until he gets it, and when I get up to get him something to eat he leisurely comes towards me, and rubs against my leg, as if to say, "Thanks. Now that wasn't so hard, was it?"

But this time when I got up he seemed to have no interest in eating when I moved to get the food. He didn't come to me, he simply stayed crouched down in the corner of the room staring intently at a floor vent and the area beside it which has a few inches of space behind my bed. He even took his paw and reached out at the wall, sticking his head behind my bookshelf, as if he sensed and was looking for something I couldn't see, and trying to grab it. He didn't meow anymore, just the one short meow that I now think was a sign that something got his attention.

Shortly thereafter my cat went into the living room, and perched in front of the air vent, and a space behind the sideboard. He didn't pay me much mind, just silently sat there, sometimes touching the wall with his paw.

I really hope it's not mice, but that behavior I can't help but take note of. Please let me be wrong. I don't want to find a dead rodent in the hallway tomorrow.

*Shrieks and jumps up on top of a chair*

Has anyone ever seen there car display similar behavior to what I just described, and was it connected a pest problem? Right now I am literally jumping at the sight of my own shadow, and am hiding under my blanket, worrying about creepy crawlies coming to get me.

Caite-chan June 8th, 2020 2:10 AM

Missy oddly likes to play with bugs and she is the biggest priss I know. Bailey a cat we had when we still lived in the house was Mr. Hunter and would catch anything and everything. When I was younger we had a bat problem in the house to the point where we got use to it because at the time we couldn't figure out where they were coming from. He also caught a few mice all while Ms. Priss Missy would be sitting off to the side looking at me with that look on her face like "Don't expect me to touch that. I'm not getting MY paws dirty." Now we have Zorro (Zo Zo) and while he is extremely loveable he is the biggest pansy I know when its comes to cats...lol.

Sheep June 8th, 2020 7:37 AM

hopefully it's just bugs or him acting curious! I completely understand you, I'm terrified of mice too, even the tiniest ones. :( back when my senior kitty was younger and she still went outside, she brought a mouse upstairs and released it from her mouth in our kitchen/living room. gosh I was so scared and remember shrieking haha

VisionofMilotic June 23rd, 2020 5:44 AM

That sounds terrifying when your cat brought home a mouse in her younger days. I would have reacted like this Jana had I been there.

https://i.postimg.cc/vTc8DRkF/Enchanting-Definite-Hermitcrab-max-1mb.gif

I had forgotten about this, but what had happened was indeed by kitty had found am insect in the vent and was playing with it. So I survived.

Incidentally, this is a cute explanation I stumbled upon for why cats may knead. What do you pet lovers think?

Anyone have any advice they can give when it comes to a lost cat? :(

Ophelia ran away -- it's been close to 48 hours.

Caite-chan July 17th, 2020 3:18 PM

I've always heard putting their litter box out or something of their's that has their scent on it. Could try putting food out but you risk the other wildlife eating it.

Fairy July 17th, 2020 9:31 PM

We got her back!!! We had two areas of “capture” set up, one in her last seen location (which included a humane trap) near the property line and one in the garage. We put out her litter box, food, water, and a blanket that smells like her (and the house) in both. We found evidence of her in the garage, so we quickly closed the door and waited. Next we got a pitiful meow and eventually caught sight of her!

We’re giving her some space to come out on her own now. She’s safe in the garage and can only escape into the house so we’re going at her pace. I’m sure in the morning she’ll be back on the kitchen table begging for nuggets and acting like a diva. (´▽`ʃƪ)♡

Thanks everyone for your advice, concern, and well wishes!!

Cherrim July 17th, 2020 11:16 PM

Caite-chan July 17th, 2020 11:50 PM

The hell with a like button....where's a love button when you need one...lol. Soooo...so glad she finally came back. Such an awesome thing to wake up to. Now she'll act like she did absolutely nothing...lol.

VisionofMilotic July 19th, 2020 6:52 AM

Does anyone know where I could order a large bag of Wild Frontier indoor adult dry cat food? This is what I have been feeding my cat for awhile.

I usually have it auto shipped from Amazon, but I got a message from them that they were sold out, and it wouldn't arrive on schedule. They had no date for when/if they would be restocked with that formula. They only had dry food for kittens, not an adult cat. They offered some different brands as substitutions of cat food, but my cat is on a diet, and I don't want to alter his formula. He also is very much a creature of habbit. It took me awhile to find a cat food that was relatively healthy and he was also willing to eat, so I don't want to make a sudden change after all that searching and work.

I searched Chewy also for an 11 pound bag Wild Frontier Adult Indoor Chicken for cats but they also were out of stock.

Has this brand been recalled? I'm still trying to come up with places to look for it, and hitting a wall. I guess I could try PetSmart next. I don't believe I looked there yet...

I tried PetSmart, and while they do list this brand on their website, you have to do an in store pick-up with them, instead of a delivery to your address. I wouldn't mind doing that if it was in stock at a branch near me, but the local PetSmart says that they don't have it. The closest branch that carries it is in a city 80 miles away. So this won't work either.

I'm stumped.

Is it possible to call your local store and ask when they expect their next shipment? They might be able to swing a shipment from another nearby-ish store to yours or could at least tell you when it will next be in stock. Chewy and Petsmart are the same parent company, though, and if they and Amazon are having issues, it seems likely that there was a larger problem somewhere along the supply chain. You could also maybe get in touch with the food producer/manufacturer themselves and ask for a list of retailers in your area. Maybe there are more unknown stores that have more stock.

You are right about about a larger problem somewhere along the supply chain. After my last post I ordered online with a venue I hadn't tried before Pets Warehouse, and thought everything would be fine, but a few hours later that evening I got an automated email, telling me that my order status had changed, and that there were issues with manufacturer, without saying what they were. I was informed that it would be another 3-15 days until the inventory of Wild Frontier arrived at their warehouse, not including the time to process, ship and deliver it to me.

It has been a mess. Now, it has since come to my attention that Amazon is going to get some more Wild Frontier back in stock on the 23rd of this month, so I have already ordered that, figuring I have enough left to last the week until they can get the fresh stock to me. I wish it was indoor for my fleshy kitty, it's just the regular salmon, but I can probably adjust the serving size to make due with. At least it's the right brand, and an adult formula, yesterday all I could find was the one for kittens. Hopefully by the time he finishes that bag whatever issues are going on with the supplier will have worked themselves out.

Thank you for your help and advice though. All of those tips you gave me are good things to know for the future.

Cherrim July 24th, 2020 9:31 PM

>< It's such a shame it happened for food you're hesitant to change for diet reasons. At least if it had been something else maybe you could ease into something else for a bit. Hopefully your kitty weathered the food shortage okay!

I'm real lucky Jude seems to have an iron stomach. @[email protected] He eats all kinds of weird things but basically never has a problem with any of it. We tried to do the "slowly transition over to new food" thing when he was little but he would like,,,,,,,,,,, chew through his bags of food and eat a bunch of the new stuff and not get sick so... we stopped bothering. He also doesn't really care about changing litter types or... even changing houses lmao. Adaptable boy!

Fairy July 26th, 2020 4:40 AM

Ah, Jude sounds like such a prince! You're lucky, my cats are.. very persnickety! They will eat new food when we slowly transition but for some reason water is like.. the big thing in my house, lmao. I keep three water bowls (and one cup) all at different heights in around the same area and they will just sit at one randomly, regardless of whether it's full or not, and meow like they're DYING. So I'll get up and change the water cause idk maybe they can sense something in it?? Or there's dust or something?? But if I use tap water, they won't drink it -- if I use bottled water, they won't drink it. They will ONLY drink filtered water from a Brita system.

It's like they pretend the water is contaminated just to watch me get up and slave over them, haha.

Sheep July 26th, 2020 8:40 AM

My cat has barely been eating/drinking the last month or so, and has had no energy at all. Took her to the vet on friday and it seems like her white blood cell count is very high which could be an indication of either an infection or cancer. She dropped around 40% of her weight. Got antibiotics which I've been giving her every day. keep her in your thoughts please... at the rate she's going I fear she won't make it through the summer, but it's too early to tell or give up yet :( Hopefully the pills work. she's not that old either, only around 10 or so. My poor sweet girl.

VisionofMilotic August 24th, 2020 9:10 AM

My issue seems much more trivial now after reading about Jana's hardship with her beautiful cat. Sending good vibes your way.

I came here today because of food drama. My boy had been eatting Wild Frontier uneventfully since Autumn of last year, but this summer they made some ownership changes. Originally they were part of Nutro, but were a higher quality, grain free edition sold as a special diet, packed full of nutrition formulated based on what the ancestors of our modern house cat would have eaten in the wild. They were also advertised as more eco-friendly, everything grown and raised on a renewable energy wind farm. However, Wild Frontier broke away from Nutro just before July of this year, and the are in the process of becoming independent. As I understand it they're developing new products and new packaging, and in the meantime there isn't any Wild Frontier for my cat to eat at most stores. I have been trying to find a new cat food during the interim, but it hasn't been easy.

My pet is a large cat who is approaching maturity between 6-9 years old, and my veterinarian would like him to lose a pound or two. So a very healthy cat food is essential, especially because he is an indoor cat and has a healthy appetite normally. Since he likes to eat at all hours I need to make sure that he is at least eatting something very nutritious so he doesn't develop a weight problem long term and any health complications that might arise from that like diabetes.

One reason I settled on Wild Frontier was because it was one of the few dry formulas that ranked very high quality at Cat Food Database. They take a very critical eye. If they give a brand a significantly above average score of 7 or higher, then it's near perfect. Wet food tends to be superior in quality to dry cat food more often, but unfortunately my cat will not eat anything out of a can, he won't even eat meat. It has to be kibble, he is for some reason very particular about that. My vet says some cats are like that. However, this provides me with some degree of challenge already because dry food normally has more carbohydrates.

There are some very good dry cat foods, but the balancing act is finding a top quality dry cat food that my cat also likes the taste of, and the two don't seem to go hand and hand usually. Often really good dry cat food comes in big cubical pieces or is even freeze dried raw meat, but my cat will not eat anything like that. He won't even eat table scraps like shrimp, fish or chicken. He's is adamant about eatting only pellets of dry cat food, and they can't look too exotic. Wild Frontier was discovered by me through some trial and error, after he wouldn't eat Crave or Tiki Cat, though both considered high end cat food.

Right now with Wild Frontier not around I tried to serve him Merrick Perfect Bistro complete care grain free weight control. It got really good ratings for nutrition and quality, but he is not thrilled to be eating it. I didn't want to switch him to a strange, new cat food abruptly, so for about a week I added small bits of Merrick to what's left of his Wild Frontier, gradually increasing the amount of Merrick little by little each day. I had hoped to transition him to Merrick, and initially he seemed to eat it like normal, but now that I am out of Wild Frontier and it's mostly Merrick he has caught on that's it's something different. He leaves most of his food throughout the day, yet clearly doesn't act like he is full. He acts hungry, and comes to me meowing regularly. I serve him Merrick, and he just looks at it and walks away, or reluctantly eats a few kernels.

These last few days have been really difficult. He's been meowing incessantly, especially during the night, trying to communicate that he's hungry, each time sounding more and more distressed as the Merrick cat food accumulates in his bowl. Obviously he can't understand that there are issues with the manufacturer, and just wants his old food back. I am not sleeping good because my poor cat cries every other hour.

This weekend I bought him a pet food dispenser maze, where kernels of food roll down on tracks like a gum ball machine if he interacts with it. I thought maybe the element of play would make the food enticing to him, and he would be more willing to try the new food. While he looks at the toy with curiosity, he will not touch the food when it falls down.

I feel bad for my cat. I want him to be in shape, but I don't want him to lose weight by starving himself. This has not been easy on him or me.

I saw a bag of Wild Frontier on eBay that was new, unopened and is not beyond the expiration date, and was considering purchasing it, hoping that by the time he finishes eatting this bag I would be able to buy Wild Frontier again at the normal outlets. I'm a little wary of buying pet food from an individual, even though they have been established on the site for awhile, have many products and all good feedback. But I can't help but worry, what if the bag has been tampered with?

Merrick is not going to work out though. There's another brand of cat food I'm also thinking of trying called Open Farm. I have heard good things about them before as especially nutritrous, packed full of meat and super foods, and also by pet food standards they are reportedly very ethical with turkey and chickens that are free-range, grass-fed, raised all naturally, no antibiotics and growth hormones. They also passed Cat Pet Food database's strict requirements with a high score, so if my cat were to eat it then this would be something very good for him.

However, there's always a risk when buying a new brand, and I have already spent a ton of money this month trying to make him happy. I'm worried it will be another bag of cat food that just sits there, and this is one of the more expensive brands on the market so I don't want it to go to waste. I'm wondering if I should just buy the Wild Frontier on eBay, knowing that at least it's food he likes, even though I also am worried about buying car food from a seller I'm starting to get desperate about what to do.
