Counter that Pokémon! - Generation 7 Edition

Information

With the release of Gen 7, I thought it'd be great to bring back a classic game! Counter that Pokémon is essentially what it says--someone posts a Pokémon, the next person tries to counter the Pokémon, and then the next person tries to counter that Pokémon and so on and so forth! This is a fun way to test your overall game knowledge as well as to learn some of the crafty ways other people tries to counter certain threats.

Rules

  • The game requires you to post an appropriate counter to the Pokémon, not just a simple check. Learn the difference between a counter and a check by reading this in-depth explanation from Smogon. Failure to follow this rule will result in your post being called out, so keep this in mind!
  • As mentioned in the previous rule, if the previous poster fails to post a valid counter, you should call them out and post an appropriate counter to what they were countering.
  • OU Pokémon and below only, please. Ubers and above can counter almost anything due to their sheer power.
  • Assume that everything is one-on-one, so don't factor in entry hazard damage or luck-based strategies such as confusion.
  • Do not slash information into your Pokémon's moveset. This completely defeats the purpose of the game since you can't alter your Pokémon's moveset in an actual battle.
  • Try to post your set in a readable format. You can use Pokémon Showdown's export feature to easily create a readable moveset format.

Counters it offensively assuming you do not switch it in on it directly.
252 Atk Choice Band Kartana Leaf Blade vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Nidoking: 351-414 (115.8 - 136.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO
Edit: if grassy terrain is up it KOs without the Band.

You can't assume Grassy Terrain. Also to be a counter and not a check you need to be able to win in every likely scenario even when manually switching into the battle, which your Kartana set does not. Kartana only 2HKOs while +1 Zygarde also 2HKOs. If Kartana is switching in, it takes one Thousand Arrows, gets off one Leaf Blade and then dies to the second. Kartana is a check because to get a guaranteed win in this matchup it has to have a free switch in.

A counter for Zygarde here would be

Quagsire @ Leftovers
Ability: Unaware
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Relaxed Nature
-Scald
-Toxic
-Recover
-Earthquake

It can survive switching in to any of Zygarde's attacks and win by stalling it out with Toxic and Recover.

Levea October 5th, 2018 5:05 PM

Venusaur @ Venusaurite
Ability: Chlorophyll
EVs: 248 HP / 88 Def / 156 SpD / 16 Spe
Calm Nature
- Leech Seed
- Sludge Bomb
- Giga Drain
- Hidden Power Fire

Burn from scald does very little harm to Venusuar, uneffected by toxic, and giga Drain will KO Quagsire.

Ability: Liquid Ooze
EVs: 248 HP / 200 SpA / 60 SpD

200+ SpA Swalot Sludge Bomb vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Tapu Lele: 186-222 (66.1 - 79%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

RIP Swalot

gimmepie October 7th, 2018 10:18 AM

I'm legit surprised Swalot actually even has a 2HKO lol, anyway.

Magearna @ Assault Vest
Ability: Soul-Heart
EVs: 248 HP / 8 SpA / 252 SpD
Sassy Nature
-Fleur Cannon
-Iron Head
-Volt Switch
-Hidden Power Fire

Lele 4HKOs at best even with using its Z-move while Magearna 2HKOs with Iron Head or Fleur Cannon

- Hydro Pump
- Flail
- Bounce

Heatran has to choose whether to use Taunt or let Magikarp get off a Rain Dance. If Taunted, Magikarp uses its Z-move and gets off 61.9 - 73% dmg. Next turn, Heatran strikes an Earth Power for 84.3 - 99.4% dmg, then Karp gets off a 37.1 - 44.5% dmg Hydro Pump to win.

If Karp gets off a Rain Dance, it goes first next turn, firing off a 185 BP Hydro Vortex for 92.8 - 109.5% dmg -- 56.3% chance to OHKO :)

Wait, this isn't a counter. You have to be able to switch it into the Pokémon that you're countering no matter what they do. Karp switches in and takes an Earth Power and gets KO'd the next turn.
