Update #1 on Silver run

Plot
Spoiler:

So... I may or may not have just binge played half of the game in a week, and I may or may not already be preparing for the Elite Four...

Anyways, after clearing out the entire region’s Donphan population in Victory Road, I think I’m ready to go! I’m a bit underleveled (excluding Espeon), but my two best Pokemon have good matchups against most of the Elite 4, so I’m pretty confident. Then it’s off to Kanto!

damn it's been a while sorry!! not much to this update, i struggled against the battle co. as soon as i arrived to castelia LOL so i was like mmmm nah and went after the side stuff w hugh and team plasma and used that opportunity to grind up a good bit esp since i had a gym coming up. i went back and beat the battle co. easily after that and then just went straight for burgh and managed to get through pretty easily. perry took out his first two pokemon pretty easily, but leavanny took him out, but not before i could paralyze him. defense curl + rollout w benjamin came in clutch once again and that was that. nothing too climactic, but still a fun battle. i'm finally about to get some more party members so the next update will happen...eventually aha. playing catch up isn't always fun esp since yamask and trubbish aren't the best attackers and might have a hard time taking things on their own for a while, but that's a problem for future me to deal with.

so honestly the most difficult part of this update was just training yamask and trubbish to catch up. and like trubbish is so bad to the point it hinders the rest of the team lmao hoping things will get better as more moves and evolution happens. also flaaffy evolved right after i beat elesa. immediately after. cool af.

You get: BLISSEY, NOCTOWL, WAILORD, SUDOWOODO, BASTIODON AND FROSLASS.

Feel free to trade an egg and/or hack two Pokemon in so you don't end up solo running all the way with just a Snorunt.

this was probably the most difficult gym so far since half the team is weak to ground and the other have can't exactly get a lot of damage output easily. first attempt was almost a dunsparce sweep, until excadrill came in. i couldn't get a burn on w niles, he kept getting flinched or missed and then perry and lyle were easy pickins from there lol. second attempt i thought would fail bc i lost benjamin to clay's first pokemon, but somehow this ended up being the round i won? idk how i did it tbh lol. but i won't question it. on to the next area...and a new encounter soon. i started to get excited until i remembered it's one of my least favorite pokemon...and it's another electric type so lol not the most helpful ig, but it fills a different role than ampharos does at least, so we'll see how it goes.

getting through chargestone cave was less a hassle than normal bc i opted to use repels. i just don't have good counters for the wild pokemon in there, but we leveled up enough to get lyle and niles to evolve. after arriving on the other side at mistralton, i went straight to the tall grass to catch our next party member, a zebstrika that i named ricardo. then i couldn't remember when we get our final floatzel...turns out, he's available via surf back in lostlorn forest so i fly back and surfed in that tiiiiny spot back and forth for way too long and finally got our last party member, a buizel who i named elvira...she's the only girl, actually. after catching ricardo and elvira up, skyla's gym was literally no problem. with two electric types, a rollout-er, and a floatzel with ice fang, it was a cakewalk. now with a full team and everyone evolved though, i don't know where the remaining difficulties lie, but i know zebstrika's usefulness is going to wane soon enough...so i'm anticipating that.

leveled up a lot between gyms. so i thought that drayden's gym would be an easy sweep with elvira's ice fang, but that didn't go well. i actually thought i was going to lose this fight because i missed ice fang against his flygon and he took out elvira. i burned him with niles and then thought i could just set up coil on benjamin and roost as needed, but he had earth power so that didn't work out and half the team is weak to ground. burn ended up saving me against flygon. haxorus almost got me, but perry's confuse ray came in clutch and saved the day. he didn't get to stay in the battle, but niles held his own and got the final blow. but hey, we got the badge. now we have all the team plasma stuff to do rip...

See its been awhile since anyones posted but I love this challenge and hope someone will still roll for me!

Name: GrassN
Game Version: Red, or Blue, or Yellow (I'll be getting them on VC so can use whichever works for the roll)
Number of Pokemon: 6
Exclude NFEs: Yes

Restrictions: I am unable to trade, because itll be on VC for the 3DS, so no trading evolutions.
I'd like a type balanced team, with a surfer and flyer,
no legendaries,
and no hacks (so will need a viable one before the first gym)

Heck, why not sign up for the other VC games as well! Ill do two games at a time.

Any way I can get a re-roll on Wigglytuff😅
Though I hate to break up the Wigglytuff twins, I have been looking for a Jigglypuff for over an hour and am having no luck finding one. I know they're rare, but Im really wanting to get started, and already know Im going to have to spend awhile looking for Marill later on. So any other pre-first gym pokemon! (I officially decided on Gold Version, so cant do Ledian or Teddiursa)

Update 1

Moving fairly quickly! I have beaten both Faulkner and Bugsy with no trouble at all actually. Furret's pretty good, and is able to sweep most of the pokemon I've fought since getting the second badge. I will say getting him to evolve was a little bit of a task, because Sentret is just SO slow, but once he learned Quick Attack it fixed that.

Right now I just caught my Sunkern and am going to level it and Furret up before I try Whitney. I already won the bug catching contest, so I can get Sunflora whenever (and though I would love to hold off til it learns Giga Drain, I dont think I can make it til lvl 46) but going to spend a little more time before evolving it.

Sure. I rolled for a new Water-type and got Starmie for you.

Update 2

Much slower progress today! For one, Whitney lived up to her reputation as difficult yet again. She might be the most capable AI in these early games. She locked my Sunkern into a nearly 15 turn Encore of Growth, and every time it ran out she immediately used it before I could use a different move. Then after that, despite me trying to be smart and avoid her Miltank's Rollout, as soon as I lowered its accuracy with Mudslap, she only used Stomp the rest of the battle, and along with Attract, I was out in no time. Second time around went much better, as I just led with Furret and used Mudslap until even Stomp was missing a lot of the time.

After getting the third badge, I went straight to catch my third Pokemon, and though I have only used him for a short time so far, Sudowoodo is kind of great. It has a lot of good coverage with fighting and rock moves, and can even learn the elemental punches. After that, I decided to start looking for my fourth 'mon of Marill. Looking for a 1% spawn rate was not fun, but only ended up taking about 30-45 minutes. I'm going to spend some time leveling everyone up, but before I challenge Morty, but thankfully, Sudowoodo and Marill will make him much easier then trying to go in with only a normal and grass type.

My first challenge update!

Spoiler:

I had some time to get started on my FireRed challenge and it's going well! I have never used any of these pokemon before, so its making the game more interesting.
Badge #1 - Done: Mankey was great for fighting Brock, and I think I beat him with Mankey at level 9. However, I have never had so much trouble with Viridian Forest! Every pokemon resisted the only decent move I had, so I had to keep leaving to heal, so it took awhile to get there!
Badge #2 - Done: I had to spend quite a bit of time training up Jigglypuff and Mankey to beat Misty, because her Starmie really did some damage with Water Pulse. I ended up going down to Vermillion City and using trainers around there to level up, and finally was able to keep Starmie asleep long enough to knock it out.
Badge #3: I'm on the SS Anne with Drowzee now, and just about to face my rival, Mankey evolved, so I really don't think I will have much issue with him or with Surge. I may have some time tomorrow to keep playing through it so will post an update soon!

Update 3

Smaller update today. Took a little while to train up Marill, but luckily it evolves at only 18, so started moving a lot quicker after that. With Azumarill and Surf, Morty was no problem at all. I've decided not to evolve Sunkern until level 31 so I can get both synthesis and petal dance, but at this point its becoming very difficult to train it even with a type advantage. Surfing in the Whirl Islands sounded like a great place to train it, but Tentacool's are Poison and Goldeen's know Peck, so only taking a quarter of their HP with Mega Drain doesn't make it easy. Good thing is, once it evolves, I actually think it may be pretty helpful, especially if I keep trying to overlevel it.

My Furret has taken a back seat, but whenever I bring him out, he OHKO's just about anything. Thinking of teaching him Shadow Ball, which would then give him a type advantage move over 8 different types. Also considering renaming him "Fearet" lol

At Chuck's gym, but going to wait til tomorrow to try him, just because I need it to be daytime to catch Farfetch'd and a Flying move will make the gym a lot easier.

2nd update!
Spoiler:

Been enjoying the run so far! Hypno has become my go to for battles, - psychic types really are OP in this region (and Dream Eater is an incredible move. Everyone else has been good to play with too.
Gym 3 - Done: This was actually pretty easy. Primeape pretty much took care of all off his pokemon, probably because he was way overlevelled while I was training up the other two.

Gym 4: I am on a bit of a hiatus before I take on the next gym, because I am in pursuit of Flamethrower's TM from the game corner. I got my Eevee, but know that Flareon doesn't really learn fire moves for a long, long time. So, I am saving up enough money to buy enough coins to get it Flamrethrower from the game corner. Only takes like, 4500 coins so..... a lot of money lol. As such, I have been fighting literally EVERY trainer I can find, currently working my way down to Fuschia City. The Rockets at the underground hideout and the tower have been helpful, but I am only halfway there. On the plus side, I should have some WAY overlevelled pokemon once I go back to the gyms :)

Update 4

Moving along in this challenge. I didnt feel like training up Farfetchd before the fighting gym, so just used Azumarill to go through it and didnt have too much trouble. I went straight to the Steel Gym as well, where I finally started to see some use for Sudowoodo, because he was the only thing that could really touch Steel-type. After that, I headed to the Lake Rage and Rocket Base and used that as the training for Farfetchd, which actually worked pretty well.

Possibly the best surprise so far is that I taught Sunflora Hidden Power, and it ended up being Fire-type, which is not only amazing (since I dont have a lot of elemental coverage on this team) but also so fitting for a sunflower pokemon. I am now forever disappointed that they didn't make Sunflora a Grass / Fire type 😅

Sudowoodo also worked pretty well against the Ice types in Pryce's gym. Im glad he's finally becoming helpful, because there was a stretch there where I almost stopped using him entirely and made him an HM carrier. Renamed my Furret to Fearret because Barker sounded too friendly for a pokemon that has expansive coverage and nearly one shots most pokemon he fights lol. Im now in the middle of the Rockets at radio tower, but once I finish that up, Ill be going to get the last member of my team with Piloswine!

Update 4.5
Rather than make a whole new post, just quick update for now! Got through Rocket tower, which was great for leveling up, but geeeeez I do not remember getting Poisoned that much. Its like every pokemon knows sludge, and it seemd like 50% of the time it poisoned. But still got through it! Updated the team as well.

3rd Update!
Spoiler:

I've been playing but totally forgetting to post updates (if anyone even reads these lol)

I FINALLY saved up enough to afford Flamethrower at the game corner, so I got to evolve my eevee :) I then headed too the Safari Zone and caught member number 5: Doduo. After a little training, I took on Koga and with an overleveled psychic type, it wasn't bad at all. And now with the ability to surf, I went back to the safari zone and caught the final member of Psyduck. Ive been saving up rare candies, so quickly evolved both new members. At this point, the team is nearly complete, just waiting to evolve Jigglypuff until she learns Hypervoice.

Honestly, this team kind of rocks?!?! Each one is great and Im confused why Ive never tried any of them before. Seriously, Dodrio is a boss! Im having no trouble at all, and this is probably the most overlevelled Ive ever been in a Kanto Game (thanks overpriced Flamethrower TM lol). Im curious to see where my levels are for the E4. For some reason in Kanto games, I always seem to be way underlevelled when I get there and actually struggle with them, but Im already having level 40s and I still have 3 more badges to go. I honestly forget how the battle with Erika went, but Im in the middle of Silph Co and then will move on to Sabrina

Final Update
This run was really fun, though the end for the Elite 4 was rather challenging. Getting the last gym badge was easy, as Azumarill with ice punch took care of most of the gym. And I made the intentional effort to then fight every trainer up until the Elite 4 to train. I think when I finally got there, levels ranged from 37-33. Bought all the potions and revives, took on will. And it wasnt easy, but I found some type advantage for each and made it through. Koga was simple, Sudowoodo and a Sunflora with Hidden Power Fire, and a few Growths on his first Ariados, made it a breeze. I even did okay with Bruno ... until Machamp. He one shotted everything. Every single thing. Lost and tried again. Got to Bruno, taught Farfetchd attract, and when I got to Machamp, I had a 4x Swords Dance Farfetchd, with Machamp infatuated and 3-4 sand attacks for low accuracy. I thought it was done, but NOPE. His Machamp has a never-miss move. Lost again and at this point, I was out of revives and potions and had no money to buy more. So i had to spent quite awhile just fighting Will and Koga over and over for the exp and the money. Finally, once Farfetchd got to level 38, I managed to get a successful attract and thenn one shot with Fly. Finally moving on, after saving lol, it only took two tries with Karen - Sudoowoodo was incredible, so many counters to her mons. And amazingly, I did beat lance on the first try, though I was down to Sudowoodo at like 10% health, no more revives, and just happened to be left with that right after his dragonite used hyper beam, so I got one move and it worked.

There were some fun members on this team. Furrets one Ive always wanted to use but never did cause I always just had too many others I wanted to use. Sudowoodo actually helps out alot, and kinda gave me a new respect for rock-types since I rarely use them. Sunflora, for as bad a rep as it gets, was honestly great, though Ill say that may be mostly from it getting a fire move. Farfetch'd wasnt anything particularly special, and Piloswine was difficult to use because there was no physical special split, so his ice moves never really helped. Azumarill I am mixed on. I wanted to love it, and I kinda did, but I also kept getting annoyed that a 2x effective surf at similar levels did not-great damage because its attack stats are so low. I may have to try it out in a newer game where it gets the fairy typing.

I may come back to this game at some point to do the post game stuff but gonna take a break for now and possibly start another challenge.

Gym(s) Completed:
Cilan

Current Party:
Chili - Pansear
Slave - Oshawott

I chose Oshawott at the start so I would be given Pansear at the Dreamyard, which is where the run truly began. I kept Slave in my party for the purpose of HM's, as is permitted by the rules. After training Chili up to Level 12, I attempted to fight Cilan. It took a few tries, but I was eventually able to get past his Lillipup and took down his Pansage with ease. After that, I went through Route 3, getting some EXP from the trainers in the area, and saved my game in Nacrene City.

Update 1: Roark Defeated

So I started my journey by picking Piplup so that my rival (who I named Ralph. idk why) would have Turtwig to make my life slightly harder. Just cuz. From there I went and quickly grabbed my first two mons available before Jubilife - Chum the Bidoof and Coin the Starly. I then proceeded to switch train em up a bit before tossin Piplup into the box and making my way forward. Grabbed Psyduck shortly after reaching Jubilife in Ravaged Path, and I'm realizing as I type this that I left the trainers on Route 204 untouched. I just forgot about em XD But from there I took my new bud Nugget and brought him with me to fight Ralph. The fight was a bit harder than I remembered, but was still easy, and from there I made my way to Oreburgh.

After dragging Roark outta the mines, I went ahead and challenged him immediately afterwards. I did wipe on my first try cuz I was ... kind of under leveled, but I beat him on my second try. I used his Geodude and Onix to switch train Coin a bit, and then left Nugget out for his Cranidos. Water Gun was just barely not a 2-shot, so I had to bring Chum in to take some hits while I healed Nugget back up, and when Chum went down, I was able to send Nugget back in and secure the win. I think this is the first time I've actually gone against Roark with my Ace for the battle being under at least lvl 12. so that was pretty cool. Good job Nugget.

Time to polish my new badge and keep movin~

Update 2

Gyms Completed:
Cilan
Lenora

Current Team:
Chili - Pansear
Slave - Oshawott

After trying and failing to defeat N outside the Nacrene City gym, I trained Chili up a few levels by fighting the trainers in Pinwheel Forest. After successfully defeating N, I promptly challenged the gym, though it took quite a few tries to defeat Lenora. After finally defeating her, I did the thing where you fight Team Plasma in Pinwheel Forest, then went through Skyarrow Bridge to get to Castelia City. There, I acquired a Fire Stone and an Eviolite. I gave Chili the Eviolite (I intend to evolve him after he's learned some stronger level-up moves), and leveled him up a bit on the trainers in the Battle Company. After that, as well as starting the part where you have to fight Team Plasma to get Bianca's Munna back, I healed up in the Pokémon Center, saved, and called it a day.

Last Update!
Spoiler:

Had to take a little break for awhile but finally got back to this challenge.

This may have been my easiest run through a Kanto game. For some reason, I always struggle with the elite 4 and usually have to spend a lot of time grinding. But not this time! Saving up money to get flamethrower for Flareon helped level up and made Flareon great, so much so that I did it again and got Ice Beam.

I actually loved this team. Dodrio has got to be the best flying type in Gen 1, because it was super quick, and Tri Attack s great.
Hypno worked really well. I usually dont use psychic types in Gen 1 because I never can trade to evolve Kadabra, but Hypno was a good compromise. Hypnosis + Dream Eater helped A LOT with the Elite 4.
Wigglytuff was a tank. I wish i was able to teach it better TMs, because despite surviving for a long time, it never could do a lot off damage. I imagine its much better with the fairy typing.
Flareon might be my favorite of this run. It took a lot to get the TM, but once it learned it, it was a beast. Glad I finally tried using this eeveelution.
Golduck was a solid water type. Wasnt anything amazing but was pretty reliable.
Primeape was the only one I wasnt a big fan of. It was definitely helpful, because there are a lot of normal and rock types in this game, but it just never really came out unless there was a normal type I was struggling with.

Update 3

Gyms Completed:
Cilan
Lenora
Burgh

Current Team:
Vesperus - Gothita
Carly - Emolga
Cacto - Maractus
Chili - Pansear
Slave - Oshawott

After beating Team Plasma in the building and getting Bianca's Munna back, I went and challenged Burgh's gym, which was pretty easy using Chili. I beat Bianca and went into Route 4, beating Cheren and the other trainers on my way to the Desert Resort. There, I caught a Maractus, then left and continued my way to Nimbasa City. After beating the Team Plasma grunts and getting Strength, I went to Route 16 and caught a Gothita, then went into Lostlorn Forest and caught an Emolga. I will be training all my Pokemon to level 25 before challenging Elesa's gym.

Update 4

Gyms Completed:
Cilan
Lenora
Burgh
Elesa

Current Team:
Pierre - Ducklett
Cacto - Maractus
Carly - Emolga
Vesperus - Gothita
Chili - Pansear
Slave - Oshawott

After fighting N and getting all my Pokémon up to level 25, I went into the Nimbasa Gym and defeated Elesa using Carly and Cacto. I went through Route 5, fighting Cheren and the other trainers, then went through Driftveil Bridge and caught a Ducklett, which I named Pierre. I went to the Driftveil Pokémon Center and saved, calling it a day.

Should be able to hack in any latecomers or trade evolutions (with the proper items in hand). Never messed with hacking stuff in before. Tested it out a little while ago. Seemed to work okay.

Update 5

Gyms Completed:
Cilan
Lenora
Burgh
Elesa
Clay
Skyla

Current Team:
Pierre - Swanna
Cacto - Maractus
Carly - Emolga
Vesperus - Gothorita
Chili - Pansear
Slave - Oshawott

I did some training in the Cold Storage, fighting Team Plasma. I then went through the Driftveil Gym, using mainly Pierre and Cacto. After a few attempts, I managed to defeat Clay. I also acquired the HM for Fly. I went through Route 6 and reached Chargestone Cave. I did more training in there, fighting N and Team Plasma. During this, Pierre evolved into Swanna, and Vesperus evolved into Gothorita. I soon reached Mistralton City, and did some more training in Route 7 and Celestial Tower. After returning to Mistralton City, I went and fought through the Gym, which was a breeze using Carly. After defeating Skyla, I went to the Mistralton Pokemon Center and called it a day.

EDIT: Not sure if I needed to write that in "restrictions", but I decided to catch all my team members in PokéBalls. It's not a restriction indeed, but an additional rule that I wanted to add.

I am about to start the League and I decided that I am going to keep the HM in the Pokémon movesets. While some of those are good, some others really do nothing but occupy a place. It kinda adds some layer of difficulty, I guess.

MayorOfPie June 21st, 2022 9:34 AM

These are all ones I haven't really used before, and been wanting to use. Ditto is my favorite pokemon of all time, and been really wanting to try out a Jumpluff lately for a playthrough so shall be fun. Confirming this team

_confused_piplup_ June 21st, 2022 9:57 AM

hmmm I was hoping for something different from Swampert because I have always used it. I used Exploud on my last playthrough in ORAS. However the team is not bad and it has some pokemon I have never used, so I guess I'll confirm it!

AngeltheTogekiss468 August 12th, 2022 8:37 AM

Update 6

Gyms Completed:
Cilan
Lenora
Burgh
Elesa
Clay
Skyla
Brycen

Current Team:
Vesperus - Gothitelle
Pierre - Swanna
Carly - Emolga
Cacto - Maractus
Chili - Simisear
Slave - Oshawott

I went through Route 7, fought Charon, and acquired Surf. I then went through Twist Mountain, training my Pokémon up. I made it to Icirrus City and beat Brycen mainly using Chili. I went through Dragonspiral Tower, training up on the Team Plasma members. Then, I went through Route 8, fought Bianca, then went through the Tubeline Bridge, Route 9, and Shopping Mall Nine, training my Pokémon up all the while. At one point, Chili reached Level 43 and learned Crunch, so I used a Fire Stone on him to evolve him into Simisear. At another point, Vesperus reached Level 41 and evolved into Gothitelle. When I made it to Opelucid City, I went into the Pokémon Center and called it a day.

Update 7

Gyms Completed:
Cilan
Lenora
Burgh
Elesa
Clay
Skyla
Brycen
Drayden

Current Team:
Cacto - Maractus
Chili - Simisear
Pierre - Swanna
Vesperus - Gothitelle
Carly - Emolga
Shayla - Bouffalant

I went to Route 10 to do some training for the Opelucid Gym, and caught a Bouffalant (which I named Shayla), completing the team randomly chosen for me. Once I got everyone trained up, I went through the Opelucid Gym using mainly Shayla, and beat Drayden. I went back through Route 10, fought Cheren, and went on through Victory Road, training everyone for the Elite Four. Once I got everyone trained, I went into the Pokémon League Pokémon Center and called it a day.

AngeltheTogekiss468 September 1st, 2022 8:25 AM

Final Update

Gyms Completed:
Cilan
Lenora
Burgh
Elesa
Clay
Skyla
Brycen
Drayden

Current Team:
Pierre - Swanna
Carly - Emolga
Vesperus - Gothitelle
Shayla - Bouffalant
Cacto - Maractus
Chili - Simisear

I went through the Elite Four, beating them with my different Pokemon. After catching Reshiram since the game forces you to (I just opted to not put it in my party since the game lets you choose not to use it), I struggled through N for a bit, before deciding to train my Pokemon up a bit. This proved to be a worthwhile pursuit, as I had a less difficult time getting past N's Zekrom, and was able to beat N with my Pokemon. After two failed attempts to beat Ghetsis, I was able to beat him after working out a strategy on who to put in the front (Chili), thus beating the game and the challenge.

I had a lot of fun with this! I might do this challenge again in the future!

edyedy November 5th, 2022 5:40 PM

^ oof these are Pokemon that I have never used before in a run, and would never choose for an actual run. Congrats on the random challenge!
