Tumblr banning adult content on December 17th
god I hope this isn't something that's banned to talk about
Quote:
While I'm all for banning of porn, honestly, this will definitely kill Tumblr. I honestly think this might be a good idea. Safe mode didn't work well anyway, let's not even lie. I feel bad for any artists who post their art on Tumblr, though. :x That's literally the one thing Tumblr was actually good for. Tumblr users, what do you think of this content ban? |
To be honest, I am soooooooooooo happy they are doing this.
Tumblr is a great site, especially to those who want to get their feet wet on blogging, but lately in the past few years it has become IMPOSSIBLE to browse because of soooo much porn. I get it, people want to show off boobs and butts. People want to glorify that, but tumblr failed to create a different haven for those who want/do porn and for those who do not. They also didn't take underage users into consideration at the time, but I am glad they are finally stepping up to the plate, and banning it altogether. Like, every thing you search there's always at least 10 things with porn on it. It's outrageous. So yeah, yay for that. |
Moving this on over to Internet & Technology, since Tumblr is a social media platform and website :)
Also, I agree this is a good thing but I do also agree Tumblr will lose a lot of members. Will it kill Tumblr? We'll see. |
about time they did this
i used to post some of my artwork on tumblr but kept being followed by pornbots with inappropriate avatars so i gave up with it. not very encouraging for your first followers to be something like that and from what i've heard, they never made an effort to curb the constant issues with bots and their poor flagging algorithm for inappropriate content. all i use it for is to find pretty .gifs, but even that is rare |
Not a tumblr user, but it'd be interesting to see whether or not this move would be considered far too little, too late.
Twitter is pretty much on fire poking fun at Tumblr and saying that it's escalating towards its eventual death so I'm curious whether or not this will actually be the case. |
Also not a tumblr user and I never quite ‘got’ what it actually is/was. But from what I know about it isn’t it primarily used these days by teenagers that share porn .gifs? Won’t this massively hurt tumblr?
It’s just going to leave a gap in the market for another site to take its place, in the porn .gif sharing aspect anyway. |
I'm mixed over this move. On one hand, I can understand this might go well for those that are tired of the porn bots. However, I've been hearing how a lot of lgbt stuff and other innocent posts have been flagged already so this new system sounds like it's going to be a mess.
If I have to be honest, I'm not going to jump ship just yet but Tumblr has been going about this the wrong way. They should've deal with the bots problem a long time ago and have a better moderation system for that in place instead this. Also ironic the worst thing is some tits, but racists and other hatered groups might be still running around. This might not totally kill the site, but it'll hurt it quite a bit. |
RIP the site. Whether you were the for the nsfw or not, that was a huge part of the userbase. I think it's a bit overboard for slapping it down all together. Maybe more restrictions to make it harder to find or look at or limit how easily it is seen on search engines. I don't know, but what I do know is that this will be a huge loss of people there, and the porn flood gates open on Twitter lol

tumblr hurt itself in its confusion!
action was needed when porn on tumblr broke out a few years ago. they acted too late |
Thank God. I somtimes find myself browsing Tumblr for artwork and decent .gifs, but absolutely filthy content can filter through even the most innocent searches. :/ I'm much more careful now, with strict safe search on, because that stuff fills me with revulsion, especially when it comes into things like Pokémon.
It wouldn't bother me if this kills Tumblr either; from my own experience, it has such a toxic environment. I don't mean to generalise but that's definitely how it strikes me. But they should also be focusing on racism and hatred toward the LGBT community. |
If it helps protect kids from seeing sexual stuff and losing their innocence too soon, i'm for it.
I don't want to agree that tumblr is 100% toxic, i've seen nice people like princess peachie on there. That comment kind of bothered me :-x Since i'm so sensitive about the idea of girly people ever being put down.... I think i'll give likes to most of the posts that are for tumblr removing porn ;) Protect the kids!!! (also hopefully tumblr will 100% stand up for lgbts and other races one day too o-o those people shouldn't be picked on AT ALL...) Also, Korrina doesn't have to be having sex to look hot in like every picture of her <3 :3 Though besides that my love for her is deeper than that overall....(she just makes me so happy in general)(i hope i'll always have her as much as i need her in my life....my autism is really hard without her) |

But there are definitely some amaaazing blogs! |
Haven't been on Tumblr recently, but I'm kind of mixed on this move. I understand that they want to make the site a more welcoming place for first-time bloggers, but I believe that they should direct more attention on tackling the more toxic sections of the site such as Pro-Ana (promoting eating disorders) and Columbiners.

While adult content on social media, including Tumblr, is a definite and legitimate concern, I also have concerns that their new policy will go beyond banning "adult content" - much as how Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and the like have censored content that doesn't go according to a particular agenda due to "community guidelines".
|
I won't be returning to Tumblr, ever.
|
This is so lmao to me. Porn is basically like one of the main draws to tumblr and the other is fandom, which is kind of reliant on porn (or the ability to post it) anyway so??? Dunno why Yahoo bought the dumb site in the first place since they clearly have no interest in hosting smut. This was inevitable.
Anyway, I hope this finally kills the hellsite so everyone can be free. I will miss it as a hub for fandom, though, as much as I hated the site. :( It was really good for posting visual stuff, which is basically how I dabble in fandom. On Twitter you have to know who to follow in order to find anything you want because things are far less discoverable and other sites for fandom are a bit more writing-oriented. There's been lots of talk about moving to other places but none of them really fill the void for me, so that sucks. Oh well. Good riddance, really. |
Not a Tumblr person myself but I think they just signed their own death warrant. Maybe if this was years ago when adult content was only just starting to amass on Tumblr it would be different, but as it stands this is more or less what's happening.
1. Tumblr is axing an enormous part of their userbase, quite probably the largest. Instead of simply improving the filters on the site to prevent adult content from going where it shouldn't or removing problem users... they just wiped out almost all of their content. 2. They're losing even more people because whatever they're using to remove content is constantly hitting perfectly fine posts, disproportionately targets the lgbtq+ community and does this while also leaving hate speech. So... it's gone from being inundated by smut and a haven for lgbtq+ people to.... a haven for the KKK instead. Well done. 3. People who take issue with this brand of censorship are going to leave in droves. |

I want everyone to go back to Dreamwidth which was originally gonna be the new LJ before tumblr became king. :P |

I remember Dreamwidth!!! Oh lord it hasn't changed at all. |
I didn't have a blog on there myself, but if it's basically doomed itself I'll just roll my own blog software and call it a day. The only rules I have to adhere to are my own (and that of the hosting company).

If Tumblr had dealt with the issue of unbridled porn blogs years ago, instead of allowing the spam to become what it is because of the profit they got from it, they likely wouldn't have fallen into such a dire situation in the first place. But it's only the tip of the iceberg, really. The lack of interest (or inability due to the limits of their algorithm) to deal with the child porn situation, something that's been an issue ever since I left many a moon ago, was always gonna do them over. The lack of interest (not an inability, this was within their power) to deal with Neo-Nazi propaganda floating around the place is a similar reason why Tumblr doomed itself ages ago.
It's not a good thing to outright remove NSFW content - it's a repetition of the foolish practice of corporations to understand content production and how delivery of said content works.
In this case, Yahoo has decided that in order to regain faith with advertisers, it has to go through with what it had always wanted to do, as puritan behaviour always finds its way to the top of these businesses - purging NSFW content. But it needed a reason, as purging such content out of the blue would doom the site. But simultaneously, NSFW material was all that kept the site on its feet, due to the profit involved in hosting the legion of porn bots and encouraging NSFW material. Kind of an odd situation. But it's all come to a head with Apple and co forcing Tumblr to act - however, nothing it will do will ever be satisfactory, because not only has it murdered its sole remaining point of relevance, advertisers still wont touch the place with a pole due to 'Tumblr' and 'child porn' now being in mainstream headlines instead of the long-stirring complaints by users. Combined with a long history of site mismanagement and outright neglect for the tech aspect of things, along with allowing users to be preyed on in all manners (physical, moral, sexual) for profit, Tumblr's eventual fall was transparently obvious. The hellsite doomed itself. |
It's about time now! I hope with this ban of NSFW content, my country will let me access tumblr again, because I find it inaccessible for long to the point that any signatures in here that comes from tumblr got blocked too. Still, I'm wondering why it needs to wait until the App Store ban to take action, when my country already blocked access to it for long... But oh well. At least I might possibly be able to visit tumblr again, and that's what matters.
|
It doesn't really affect me because I only ever use tumblr to look for art, and it's where I find a lot of my avatars - I didn't even realize it had an adult content problem, just thought it had a bad reputation for being a SJW haven, but honestly if you don't look for that shit you don't really come across it that often. In my experience at least, since I look specifically for fan art.
I don't mind the adult content thing as much as I find it kind of strange. If I want to look at porn, I'll just... go look at porn, I wouldn't think to go to tumblr for that. |
My roommate mentioned earlier today that Tumblr’s NSFW content filter is so simplistic that it can be tricked by putting a SFW image in the corner of an NSFW image and it’s fine. Pornbots have also begun marking their posts with #sfw which prevents the filter from removing it.
So, pretty much what I expected from Tumblr. They REALLY need to find better programmers. Glad I got out when I did. |
It seems most advertisers don't want their ads placed beside porn, except porn advertisers I guess :laugh-squinted: so the adult content ban was always going to happen, the app store issue merely speeded it up a little.
