FireRed Water Monotype Update #4:
It’s been several months since I last updated, and I haven’t played too much, but I have made a bit of progress since my last update. My team is headed for Fuschia City and gym badge #5. Horsea (now Seadra) has also joined the ranks, and is well on its way to catching up to the other team members. The team: Blastoise Gyarados Vaporeon Seadra Mostly in the 40s. |

Slow start, but it should snowball from here. I tried to do this earlier this year, but I was burnt out from my normal playthrough. I'm already farther than I made it on that attempt. Spoiler:

Ultimate Monotype Challenge - Fire Red Part #4 - Yeah, I'm still doing this So I picked this up again for lack of anything else to do...here I was, thinking I would be done with this within a month. I'll be lucky to finish it at the end of the year this rate. SO. I have decided to drop Golbat and Pidgeotto (sorry guys, maybe in HeartGold) and focus on Charizard and Dragonair...I'll fill my team out with Articuno when I get to it. Realistically I don't need anything else to finish the game, and those two need around 180,000 EXP each to get to Level 55 (rough endgame level target, might go for 60 if I feel like it) and I just don't have the time or energy to needlessly grind. So this is a minimalist run! Blasted through Erika's Gym as expected...Charmeleon evolved. Team Rocket's Hideout wasn't too difficult either, but Lavender Tower...ugh, I should not have tried to use that place to train my Dratini, which had a weaksauce Shock Wave and Dragon Rage. Gastly are the absolute WORST things to grind off, did you know? If it's not Confuse Ray, it's Lick. Paralysis, Confusion, Spite on my Dragon Rage, Night Shade to reduce my HP by a fairly hefty amount all things considered, and...ugh. Why do they never use Curse when I want them to?! That was...not fun. Not fun at all. Next stop is Fuschia City for Strength and Surf for Charizard and Dragonair respectively - Strength isn't THAT bad really as an attack move - and then it'll be back to clear Team Rocket out of Saffron City probably. By which point I will hopefully be able to destroy Erika and Sabrina's Gyms without too much difficulty. Hopefully before the end of this month, but I make no promises... Stats: Trainer Name: Dawn Playtime: 9:21 Current Team Three times faster than the average Charizard - Level 37 Putting on Dragonairs - Level 33 Badges: 4/8 Game(s): Fire Red, HeartGold, Emerald/Alpha Sapphire (depends on my mood), Platinum, White 2, X, Ultra Moon, Shield Pokémon Type: Flying Single/Ultimate: Ultimate |
Ultimate Monotype Challenge - Fire Red Part #5 - The in-between bits Whoah boy. When did this become FUN again? So dropping everything except for Charizard and Dragonair was a fantastic idea - it turns out the game is MUCH less grindy and tedious when you only have 2 Pokemon to worry about, and those 2 Pokemon are 10+ levels above everything else. This afternoon I blasted down the cycling route, out of Fuscia City, and cleared out Silph Co. Both my Pokemon went up by over 10 levels apiece. Muahahaha. Still, this has been an eye-opening experience on just how relaxed the grind in modern Pokemon games has become - in 3 hours in XY I probably could have done this for six Pokemon. In 3 hours in Shield I could have a full team of level 100. I'm surprised I didn't notice it...but then, it HAS been quite a few years since I dived into a Gen III title. My interest in replaying usually begins at Gen IV...stops at Gen IV too. So yeah. I demolished Koga with little difficulty too...although Hypno are surprisingly resistant to Flamethrower. That was somewhat vexing. Turns out I'd somehow amassed 140k in money again from all these trainer battles, so I've bought 20 Ultra Balls and I'm going to try my hand at catching Zapdos, because why not. Then it'll be off to Seamfoam Islands for Articuno. Using two Legendary Birds is probably cheating in some rulebook somewhere, but not this rulebook here, and honestly they're more for variety than anything else - between the two of them, Charizard and Dragonair have pretty great coverage, and when Dragonair involves it'll probably be able to clear the E4 all by itself, especially if I level it up to 61 for Outrage. Which I might. It'll depend on how the levelling goes, since it'll probably be all I use between now and the Pokemon League...it has Shock Wave and Surf. I've got Blaine, Giovanni, and a lot of swimmers to take care of. Hoo boy. Stats: Trainer Name: Dawn Playtime: 12:31 Current Team Big Orange Dragon Thing - Level 51 Long Slimy(?) Ok so I think I might hate myself because instead of doing the sensible thing of doing white 2 like I said I would I decided “Screw you white, you can’t beat me!” So I started up white 2, beat the first gym leader, caught a male and a female venipede, brought them to the daycare and bred them to get a new fresh one for white, restarted white and beat progressed far enough to trade, traded random patrat for venipede names puera, also traded in my ducklett and patrat from previous run to serve as hm slaves and pignite to laugh at my suffering, grind a lot, beat 2nd gym with Pokémon occasionally listening but strong enough not to hinder me too much catch a lillipup for pick ups because I think I’ll need some luck for this, am now in pinwheel forest trying to progress without overlvling for fear of disobedience and try to beat gym so I can get a Pokémon that will listen every time.
Puera (Whirlipede) lvl 24 Hm slaves Patrat Ducklett I’ve also started a bunch of single runs for fun though I’m pretty far in most so not sure if I should even count them, I know I’m way too far to recount most of my adventures in nearly any of them; yellow psychic, emerald ground, omega ruby normal. All are at least past 4th gym or later. |
Managed to finish forest and reach the gym without lvling too much and fought burgh.
Surprisingly easy compared to last time since I had rollout and I even buffed it with defense curl in order to ensure maximum damage and I one shorted his whole team. After crying over how much time I lost from deleting rollout last run I recovered and proceeded to leave and fought Bianca and easily defeated her to finally evolve into scolipede. Now trying to rush forward to finally get a second Pokémon. I’m going to try updating more regularly after each gym but I may forget. Puera (Scolipede) lvl 30 Hm slaves Patrat (slowly lvling it for evolution for extra hms) Ducklett Pickup Lillipup Moral support/Debbie downer Pignite |
Been a while since I posted here, but I've recently resumed my mono dragon run. I'm currently preparing to take on the fourth gym in Y.

Ok I went to route 4 and defeated Cheren.
Reached nimbasa city and immediately moved past it to reach route 16 and started hunting for my second Pokémon. Found a decent Trubbish and named him Quis. Spent some time trolling around a lot of trainers I saved for this grind. Finally went back to nimbasa and surprisingly struggled against N. After a quite a few failed attempts I found a solid strategy and managed to beat him. Challenged the gym and didn’t have too much trouble beating it. Proceeded to route 5 and beat cheren... again. Reached and passed thru Driftveil. Reached route 6 and started hunting for my last mon. Found a decent foongus and named her Amanita. Am now grinding out Amanita with some trainers I saved for this. Puera (scolipede) lvl 32 Quis (trubish) lvl 31 Amanita (foongus) lvl 23 Hm slaves are unchanged as is the pickup dog though I have dropped pignite due to lack of room. The run is progressing well and much better than last time. I also am no longer reaching the disobedience threshold as easily as before so that’s no issue either. |

Hey question for gen 2 is it legal to trade in a larvitar at some point because it’s so late in the game you can’t really use it.

Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing Larvitar used in this case, but I'm not the one to make the final call on that. If it had been a Dark type run then you would have been allowed to trade in Larvitar under rule #3. |

Though this wouldn't apply to HGSS, as you can get Larvitar in the Safari Zone in the mid-game. |

Ultimate Dragon Monotype in Pokémon Ultra Moonhttp://play.pokemonshowdown.com/sprites/xyani/exeggutor-alola.gifhttp://play.pokemonshowdown.com/sprites/xyani/kommoo.gifhttp://play.pokemonshowdown.com/sprites/xyani/kingdra.gifhttp://play.pokemonshowdown.com/sprites/xyani/noivern.gifhttp://play.pokemonshowdown.com/sprites/xyani/drampa.gifhttp://play.pokemonshowdown.com/sprites/xyani/naganadel.gifFINAL PARTLet's dive right into Alola. I started the game with Popplio just so I can get through first Trial quickly. There were no problems and my overleveled Popplio easily beat Totem Raticate. Then I was finally able to get first Dragon-type - Noibat. And the endless grind started. Those small dragons are so squishy and weak. So it took me a while to get it to better level and while I was at it, I also got Bagon after about 15 minutes of searching for it. Battle with Hala was pretty okay. I leveled up Noibat to level 16 prior the battle to get Wing Attack and it was enough to take care of Machop with just one hit and Makuhita with two. I then switched to Bagon to lure our Crabrawler's Z-Move and heal Noibat. All-Out Pummeling beat Bagon, so I could switch Noibat in safely. My Z-Move later and I finished first island. Akala Island welcomes me with Pokémon Trainer Sina and her Ice-types. Ewww. Not gonna lie, this battle took me more attempts that I'm willing to admit. So let's just say five. Lana's Trial was also pretty annoying. Noibat had type advantage over Totem Araquanid, but it was so squishy that Araquanid beat it with just two Bubbles. Luckily, I had some Revives, so I could just send out Bagon and revive and heal Noibat. Took me few Revives, but I was able to Totem Pokémon and finish the Trial. With that I got Fishing Rod and was able to catch another Pokémon on my team - Horsea. And just in time for Kiawe's Trial. Horsea did a lot of damage with its Water-type Z-Move, but since it's also extremally squisky, Totem Marowak beat it with that bone attack I forgot the name of. But I could finally use Bagon effectively. It resisted Marowak's attack and beat it with Bite. Nothing interesting happened until Olivia. I was able to beat Mallow's Trial with similar strategy as previous Trials. Noibat used Z-Move, then I switched to Bagon, revive/heal and finish it with Noibat again. After that I found out there is Goomy in Lush Jungle, but it's only available between 5-6am, so I decided to skip it. I couldn't even get Tyrunt in this version. Olivia fight was also pretty easy, I once again used Bagon as shield, while Horsea's Bubble Beam. Bagon was such a great shield that it evolved into Shelgon after this battle. Ula'ula Island started well. Horsea evolved into Seadra and I was this close to Kingdra. Sophocles' Trial was painful. I was once again forced to use Shelgon, since Noibat and Seadra would have type disadvantage. I taught it Brick Break just in case, but it was still pretty hard battle. Especially because of paralyze. No matter what, Totem Togedemaru inflicted this annoying status with each attack. Took me two tries to beat it, since Shelgon was unable to attack all the time. And Dedenne appeared as SOS Pokémon on my first try. I was really afraid of Acerola's Trial. Not only is Mimikyu immune to Dragon-type attacks, it's also immune to the first attack in battle. I started with Noibat and used Supersonic, then pop Disguise with Wing Attack. After that I beat it with combined strength of Seadra and Shelgon. After that I was able to get more Pokémon in Haina Desert - Trapinch and Gabite. And I finally got Goomy on Route 17. After some more grinding I had strong team of mid-evolution or even fully evolved dragons. Nothing could stop me. I stomped on Nanu, Team Skull, Aether and everyone between. I was also able to get Dragon Scale for Seadra around the time I got to Poni Island. And there I also got the very first Alola Dragon-type - Alolan Exeggutor. Dragon Trial was pretty easy. Noivern and Kingdra were once again mvps of that battle. After that I got another Alola Dragon-type - Jangmo-o. Since I wanted to use as many different Dragon-types as I could, I picked up Poipole. I looked through this thread and couldn't find anything about Ultra Beasts. I evolved it as fast as possible. This update is already getting long, so let's quickly look at the rest of the game. At this point I had strong fully evolved dragons, so there were no problems. Mina's Trial was surprisingly easy. Naganadel helped a lot with Mina herself and Totem Ribombee, Kommo-o helped with Ilma and Nanu, Goodra and Kingdra with Lana, Garchomp with Kiawe. So that went well. Hapu went down to Kingdra. Even E4 couldn't stop me. But before facing E4, I caught Drampa. At this point I didn't want to waste time grinding, so I just put it in front of my team and level it on my way to E4. You can see my team for E4 below, so let's just quickly summarize the fights. There were no fights. At this point majority of my Pokémon were on higher level than Hau's starter. Kahili did fight back a little bit, but it was still nothing. Overall I would say this was great Challenge. I know it took me how long? A year and a half? Yeah, I should have probably finish it earlier, but there were other challenges I focused on. A lot of time dragons were really weak in early game and laughably overpowered in the end game. I think I'll do another type soon. Maybe Poison or one of the elemental types. Game(s): Sword + Expansion Pass Pokémon Type: Ice Single/Ultimate: Single A week or so ago, I saw a video on the WORST types to use for each region, monotype wise. To my shock, I saw that Rock was the worst type. Now...I submit THIS as evidence of Ice being the most challenging Monotype. Under the game of “Sword”, using Ice types starts at being fun and exciting, but then you realize you have to deal with Nessa, Kabu, Bea, Gordy, Chairman Rose and Leon. Oh, and Nessa and Bea again toward endgame. On paper, this sounds hard. That’s because it is. And I love a good challenge. Here’s the rules I must adhere too; >Limited use of grinding >Limited use of items in game >Careful strategy >Choose Grookey so rival has Sobble and Leon has Scorbunny Team Options: At the front of my team will always the Hail setter. There’s a few, with Abomasnow, Vanilluxe and Alolan Ninetales. For the start of the game, I’ll have to use Abomasnow (or transfer in an egg of a HA Vulpix). Abomasnow sounds like a good edition, but then you remember it’s 4x weakness to Fire. Ninetales sounds a little bit better, but then you remember the 4x weakness to Steel. That’s going to be a large problem throughout my run, so, I’ll have to persevere somehow. I decided to go with Alolan Ninetales in the final team because it's fast and it can easily be obtained by doing the Diglett Finding challenge on the Isle of Armor. Alolan Sandshrew poses an interesting ability- Slush Rush. I could use it as an early game fast Pokemon before I possibly replace it with a HA Arctozolt from the Crown Tundra dens, but I think I'll stick with Sandshrew for now. There are two new Ice variants available; one is Darmanitan, a surprising but not welcome addition. He has a strong ability in “Gorilla Tactics”, which is a Choice Band ability. It does have a fast speed tier as well. If I really wanted to make an effort, I could try to find the HA Darumaka so I could have Ice / Fire stab, but I digress. The second shocking addition is Mr. Mime’s regional evolution, Mr. Rime. Mr. Rime has…abilities, I guess. 80/75/100 bulk is pretty bad, though. I suppose I could always slap an Evolite on the prevolution, but the loss of HP does not seem worth it. Pooling 252 EVs into defense will yield me…around 127 at Level 50. Mr. Rime will also answer my problems with Bea, but then again, we have other, faster Pokemon that could help “cheese” some results. Froslass is a Pokemon I have long admired. I used one in my Omega Ruby run, and I believe it yielded some good results. I can’t remember. A speed tier of 110 is nothing to scoff at, meaning it could either run a very supportive set, or just troll opponents. Snow Cloak is also a fantastic ability to use w/ Hail on the field. If I were to give this Pokemon a “concrete” moveset at the moment, I’d choose something along the lines of Destiny Bond, an Ice Stab move, Double Team and a good support move to either help defend the team more, or just attack. There’s also three new ice types within the ranks; Arctozolt, Eiscue and Frosmoth. Arctozolt seems like a good Pokemon. 90/90/80 defenses sound pretty good to me, especially one with 100/90 offenses. However, the speed is what really holds it back…yet gives it a niche over a Pokemon like Rotom. Rotom is delegated to one low PP move, Blizzard, whereas Arctozolt gets moves like Thunderbolt, Ice Beam, Bolt Beak, Icicle Crash, Freeze Dry and Wild Charge. However, it doesn’t have Levitate, but instead Static or Volt Absorb or Slush Rush, which is available in the Crown Tundra. There aren’t many Electric types in the region, sadly, so how often I’ll utilize this is unknown. Frosmoth is another fun newcomer; Snom might just be my mascot for this run, just because it’s sooooo damn cute. Anyways, Frosmoth is a unique Ice / Bug type, with a large special side, but low Speed, but that can be fixed by Quiver Dance. A concrete moveset at the moment would be Quiver Dance, Ice Beam, Bug Buzz and Giga Drain. At the the time of writing this, I have one on my team, thanks to the recent Raid event. Now, for the possible gamebreaker; Eiscue. I can’t lie, Eiscue is…pretty ugly looking. But, we can look past that; he’s an ice Mimikyu with a free restore under Hail, but only under physical attacks. While that sounds bad…it’s actually pretty good. Eiscue gets Belly Drum, Liquidation, Icicle Crash, Dive…while he may not get STAB, you have to realize something else; once that stupid Ice Head is broken, his speed goes from 50 to 130. That’s one of the fastest speeds in the main game, and Pingu over here could kill you fucking dead with a Liquidation at 6+, Gigantamax Charizard. If he does somehow manage to do so, I will never live it down. There has been one ice type Gigantamax confirmed; Lapras. While I do not know if you can obtain a Gigantamax Lapras in the main game (and not post), I will be pleasantly shocked if that is the case. If that is the case, I will dedicate time searching for this thing. Lapras has always been a more quiet favorite, and it’s G-Max move of setting an Aurora Veil and attacking does sound appealing. It is currently in the Max Raid events, so I could possibly pick that up as an answer for Kabu and Gordie. I just beat Milo, with a combo between Slush Rush Sandshrew and Snow Warning Vulpix. It is honestly all down hill from here. https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/353173128744140800/792449780655325225/image0.jpg |

Let's review- caught a Lapras w/ the Gigantamax Factor, dug up a few Ice and Dawn stones from the digging bros, caught an Amaura and named it after a Scottish Doctor...and Kabu took three tries. Fuckin hate critical hits. I will also NOT be using Eiscue- too few...things to work with. Icicle Crash is also an egg move, so...fun. Now, onto Bea. I think I have a strategy for that... |

I considered different types (basically between Bug or Flying) but in the end I decided Flying would be interesting but not completely over the top for each region, might take on Bug for a harder challenge after if this is a success. *1: This might changed to the D/P remakes if they're announced and depending on how long it takes for me to get around to it. *2: Not sure if this is required for the challenge but I'll probably do it anyway because I want to xD |

Game: Storm Silver Pokemon Type: Ground Single/Ultimate: Single I've been going for Nuzlockes lately, so I think it'll be nice to get back to a good ol' fashioned monotype. I usually like to pick a type that isn't used by a gym leader/E4 member, and in Gen 2 and their remakes the only such type is Ground! Plus, I've been wanting an excuse to try out Storm Silver. :) |

Pokemon Fire Red Flying Monotype - Update 1
Well my journey has finally begun :3 So naturally I did the basics when starting: Welcomed by Oak, girl character, name Alyssa, rival name Blue because I couldn't think of anything smart etc etc. So we arrive at the first choice: The starter! Luckily this was a pretty easy decision for me because Charmander will become a big boi Charizard some day, making him my first member of the team. I named him 'Icarus' as a sort of reverse reference as he's fire and gains wings instead of burning them up xD. After this Blue challenged me to a battle where I swiftly kicked his ass, then did the basic collection stuff like the Town Map, Pokedex and my first set of Pokeballs. The good thing about this Flying Type run is that I get a lot of Pokemon very early on, so I moved to Route 1 and caught my second team member: Sarah the Pidgey. After a little bit of training we added yet another member on Route 22, adding Kira the Spearow onto the team aswell. Finally the team was rounded out for the early game by catching a Jules the Caterpie in Viridian forest, where after some team grinding evolved into Metapod. On the way we also fought Blue again on Route 22, where Icarus faced his Pidgey and unfortunately fell, where Kira then had to clean up from and then also took out his Squirtle as well. From here Viridian Forest was a breeze, with Sarah, Kira and Icarus equally Pecking, Gusting and Embering everything in sight. Even Jules got in on the action and gained EXP from the Metapod's that knew nothing but Hardening, which ended up helping him fully evolve into Butterfree right at the end of the forest. Unfortunately that was my stopping point arriving in Pewter city, so next time we'll really be up against it with our first proper difficult fight against Gym Leader Brock. Team: Jules - Level 10 Butterfree - Tackle, String Shot, Harden, Confusion Icarus - Level 10 Charmander - Scratch, Growl, Ember Kira - Level 11 Spearow - Peck, Growl, Leer Sarah - Level 10 Pidgey - Tackle, Sand Attack, Gust Attachment 95359 |

Pokemon Fire Red Flying Monotype Update 2
So picking up right where things left off, after arriving in Pewter City I took a look at the gym, beating the first training before quickly realising I'd be swiftly under levelled for Brock. To prepare I decided 13 was where I'd go to and so I did some grinding in Viridian Forest where Jules learnt Poison Powder and Icarus learned Metal Claw, moves that would prove pivotal in the battle itself. Gym 1: Brock To begin the fight Brock led with Geodude, which I went with Jules as I wanted to save Icarus for the main event. I went for Confusion which luckily for me did both half HP and managed to confuse it, which didn't really matter because it broke through but then used Defence Curl instead, allowing me to finish the job with another Confusion. Next up was the big show, Onix. I was genuinely terrified by this thing considering its power and strength, so I knew I had to be smart with my approach. First I decided to stay in with Jules as I knew I could out speed and go for Poisonpowder, so I could stall it out if I needed too and because of Butterfree having Compound Eyes as its ability this was no issue landing it either. It landed and Jules was swiftly deleted from the battlefield with a OHKO Rock Tomb which was expected. Next up I sent in Icarus and decided because I'd still need to live a Rock Tomb the best course of action would be to Growl first and go from there, to my surprise Onix opted for Tackle instead of Rock Tomb which did pitiful damage, I then growled it another 3 times all of which he replied with Tackle. From there it was smooth sailing as he was severely weakened from the Poison and Icarus finished him off with a Crit Metal Claw. Boulder Badge obtained! (1/8) After that I tried to leave Pewter City before being interrupted by the greatest gift: THE RUNNING SHOES!!! With my new found speed I powered on through the next route, with Jules adding Stun Spore to its arsenal but I quickly reached Mt Moon. I then picked up two new members for my team: inside the Pokemon Centre I spent $500 on Magikarp which I named Tornado (named after one of my favourite Twister ads/Vinesauce clips) and then catching a Zubat in the cave that I named Rhaidan and just like that I had a full team of six! Plowing through Mt Moon was pretty easy, I trained up Rhaidan a little bit but mainly focused on the old team. Despite the rock Pokemon we managed quite well, mainly thanks to Icarus evolving into Charmeleon and then Jules adding Sleep Powder for yet another status move to use (this was my plan for Jules from the start because Poison/Sleep will be vital for dealing with roadblocks). We also fought our first batch of Team Rocket grunts, as well as snagging a Helix fossil and not before long we were already at Cerulean City. I dealt with Cerulean pretty much the same way as I did Pewter City, I went into the gym, fought some of the gym trainers before quickly realising how under levelled I was and then going to train. Heading up north, I ran into Blue again which caused me no problems really and blasted quickly through his team and the moved onto Nugget Bridge. While these trainers caused me no trouble, it did end up leading to Sarah evolving into Pidgeotto and upping the strength on my team even further. From there it was easy going, beat the Nugget Bridge, slapped the Rocket grunt, struggled to level up Rhaidan, got the SS ticket from Bill and suddenly we were ready for Misty! Gym 2: Misty This fight was.... a little bit more shakey than the last. To begin I lead with Sarah to deal some heavy damge to hopefully remove the Staryu before it did much damage, unfortunately Quick Attack was a 3HKO and on the second Water Pulse I ended up confused and low health, so I opted to sack Rhaidan so I could heal up Sarah and maybe confuse it with Supersonic. Misty then used a Super Potion as well as Harden, and while Supersonic missed the main thing was the Super Potion so it was all okay, I opted for Jules after due to the Harden weakening the power of Sarah's attacks where Staryu swiftly went down thanks to the Sleep Powder and Confusion combo attack. Next up, Starmie. In typical me fashion I kept Jules in and used Poisonpowder to start whittling it down, Water Pulse did quite a lot of damage and I knew Jules couldn't do much else with Psybeam so I swapped her out into Tornado, so that the Poison could chip its health down more and this worked a treat. After Tornado went down, I went into Kira to try and finish the job in one Secret Power, and while it didn't kill, the Poison damage was enough to knock out and get us the win. Cascade Badge obtained! (2/8) Finishing the session off, I battled another Rocket Grunt, got the TM for Dig and fought a few more trainers before rushing myself to our next location and our toughest challenge yet... Vermilion City, home of the Electric Gym. The Team Jules - Level 19 Butterfree - Confusion, Poisonpowder, Sleep Powder, Stun Spore Kira - Level 19 Spearow - Secret Power, Peck, Pursuit, Leer Icarus - Level 20 Charmeleon - Ember, Metal Claw, Smokescreen, Dig Sarah - Level 19 Pidgeotto - Gust, Quick Attack, Sand-Attack, Tackle Rhaidan - Level 15 Zubat - Leech Life, Astonish, Supersonic Tornado - Level 8 Magikarp - Splash Attachment 95372 |

Pokemon Fire Red Flying Monotype Update 3
Now that I had arrived in Vermilion City, there was still much to do before the Gym battle itself. For starters I explored the City, starting by picking up the Vs Seeker from the Pokemon Centre, something that would greatly help any grinding I'd need to do, then found a girl that was trading a Farfetch'd for a Spearow and while I do want a Farfetch'd, I hadn't caught another Spearow and I wanted to keep Kira and finally I listened to the Fan Club President witter on about his Ponyta so I could get a Bike Voucher. My next stop was Route 11, for some grinding because I have two important fights coming up: Blue on the SS Anne and Lt Surge in the Gym (that latter of which terrifies me). After battling all the trainers on the Route the team had grown quite a bit: Rhaidan had finally learnt a good attacking move with Bite (unfortunately its Special in this Gen so its still pretty weak) and also Kira began evolving!..... of which I swiftly stopped. Following the training I then took a trip back to Cerulean City, first catching myself a second Spearow called Fodder and trading my Bike Voucher in. Next I took Fodder to the trainer (which funnily enough was called Elyssa) and got another Flying type to the adventure, the awfully nicknamed: CH'DING the Farfetch'd (seriously why is there only ONE Farfetch'd in the whole game lol). Finally it was time to prepare the team for the Blue fight fully, and by that I mean just leveling up Tornado and that I did, putting the VS Seeker to good use on Route 6, taking on the same Pidgeotto's until young Tornado evolved into Gyarados, also learning Bite to give him an actually decent attacking move along side the Water Pulse TM. Once aboard the SS Anne I swept all of the decks taking each trainer and grabbing items along the way, Rhaidan also managed to evolve into Golbat and learn Wing Attack and the squad was finally taking shape into being something real strong. So now it was time for the duel of the century, a battle so long, tough and strategic it would shake history forever. Alyssa vs Blue, who would come out on top? Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand I swept him with no effort. Well then. After that it was smooth sailing, grabbing HM Cut from the Captain and then teaching it to CH'DING so I could get into the gym, replacing Tornado because what's worse in an Electric gym with a Flying Squad, a Water/Flying type. The gym trainers were low effort and the puzzle I nailed first try, so all that stood left was the Lieutenant himself, a fight that terrified me. Gym 3: Lt. Surge Voltorb was up first, and we started with luck on our side. I lead with Kira because I wanted to save Jules and Icarus for the Raichu, the Voltorb out sped but opted for Screech instead of attacking, working in my favour as I managed to Paralyze it with Secret Powder, allowing me to go first and finish it off. Pikachu up next, its low level meant it was nothing special, so I just blew it away with another Secret Power from Kira. Finally the sole reason I was scared of this fight: Raichu. I opted for the Jules poison strategy again, which would have worked had I not misclicked and gone for Confusion in my quick panic. I was then Paralyzed with Thunder Wave, as suddenly my good luck against Voltorb came back to bite me, with Jules getting fully Paralyzed all three time before the Raichu finished her off with Shock Wave. Next up I tried doing some chip damage with Sarah using Quick Attack, and while it damaged it, it was basically nothing and Raichu drew blood again with Shock Wave. For whatever reason I figured maybe Kira could outspeed the Raichu and go for Secret Power again, despite the fact I still was yet to evolve Kira and took another unnecessary blow in the battle. Finally I decided to grow a brain and sent out Icarus, praying for Shock Wave to do less than half which to my surprise it actually did, to where in one quick Dig we managed to take it out and win a very tension filled fight. Thunder Badge obtained! (3/8) Since we still needed CH'DING in my party to use Cut for a bit, I decided to make the most out of it and head through Diglett's Tunnel to get some stuff from Viridian and Pewter City to help me. I collected the Old Amber from the Pewter museum for another flying option later in the game, met with one of Oak's aides for the Flash HM and while looking for other things stumbled across the Move Tutor for Dream Eater, now I checked just of curiosity who could learn it and low and behold a new strategy emerged: Jules could learn it! So I replaced Psybeam with it, as it would combo well with the almost perfect accuracy Sleep Powder thanks to Compound Eyes. After finished up I headed all the way back to Cerulean City and onto Route 9 and 10, where Rock Tunnel quickly approached. Changes once again happened quickly to the team, with Kira finally reaching Level 25 and learnt Aerial Ace, meaning I could finally allow her to evolve into Fearow. Along side that I also replaced Stun Spore with Flash on Jules as someone had to make the sacrifice, as well as Tornado re-joining the party for CH'DING whilst we took on Rock Tunnel. This however was also a breeze, with Tornado ripping through hoards of Geodude, Graveler and Onix with Water Pulse and catching up to the squad fast, with Icarus also learning Rock Slide from the move tutor inside. By the end of the session I had arrived in Lavender Town, given Blue another beatdown alongside all the Trainers inside Pokemon Tower and after the stress of Lt Surge, it was nice to know our next Gym Battle would be the easiest one of the run. The Team Jules - Level 24 Butterfree - Dream Eater, Poisonpowder, Sleep Powder, Flash Kira - Level 25 Fearow - Secret Power, Aerial Ace, Pursuit, Leer Icarus - Level 24 Charmeleon - Ember, Metal Claw, Rock Slide, Dig Sarah - Level 24 Pidgeotto - Gust, Quick Attack, Sand-Attack, Whirlwind Rhaidan - Level 24 Golbat- Wing Attack, Bite, Supersonic, Astonish Tornado - Level 26 Gyarados - Water Pulse, Bite, Dragon Rage, Tackle Box CH'DING - Level 12 Farfetch'd - Peck, Sand Attack, Leer, Cut (I forgot to take a SS of the Team before I kept playing some more so am sowwy :( ) |

Black 2 Fire Monotype Update 1
Spoiler:

I did something similar to this challenge with Dark in X, Bug in Ultra Moon, and three runs of Ice, Poison and Steel in Sword. Interestingly, that final Steel run was likely the toughest, as I gave Hop the Scorbunny, and did not have great Fire-counters. In one rival battle, that Cinderace took down half of my team.
In every generation with character customisation, I have one game dedicated to a type specialisation. I set some extra rules for it: 1. The type cannot be used by an active Gym Leader, Elite 4 member or Champion in that game 2. The final team must have at least 3 Pokémon or forms introduced in that generation 3. No 'Box legendaries' 4. The final team must be viably strong. I do these runs on a 2nd game, so in previous generations I bred some eggs of that type from my other game of that generation and traded them to the new game for 6 Route 1 Pokémon, thus letting me hatch them all in the new game. I only have the one Switch, but thankfully in Generation VIII this became even easier, as I could just transfer the parents with a Ditto through Home and breed them in the Wild Area. I think I will end this practice however, as it has been rather easy - instead, I will breed and hatch one using that method to be my starter, and then restrict myself to using ones of that type I catch within the game over the course of my playthrough. Since I played by different rules, I do not expect to qualify for any commendations from this thread - I was just happy to see something similar to my self-imposed challenge here, and wanted to share. These were my final teams each time: X: Spoiler:
I usually used Mega Absol, making up the 3 for the aforementioned rule. After X, once I completed the game I would breed one of my team as a Shiny. Ultra Moon: Spoiler:
I did originally do Steel on Sun, but swapped when the Ultra games came out and Molayne became an Elite 4 member. Generation VIII was problematic. At first I went with Ice, since Melony was Shield-exclusive, but I became dissatisfied with that, so after beating the game I restarted with Poison. I won with that, but then when Crown Tundra came out, Klara became an official Gym Leader. After weighing my options for quite a while, I decided to try Steel again, as Peony and Rose did not break my rules. I even designed my character as a relative of theirs, and justified Rose not recognising them by the fact that he managed to forget the name of someone who was supposedly like an adopted son to him. Sword: Spoiler:
Yes, I did draw that last one myself. |

Hi everyone got two questions about a run I'm about to start.
So my previous post was a signup for an ultimate poison type run and now I have 2 questions about what is and is not allowed. Both concern pokemon Y. Is the EXP share banned for kalos and is super training banned? |
Far as I can see, the rules do not disallow them, but they do disallow affection unless evolving, so if you wish to follow with that trend, then you can disallow the exp share and super training, but so far, they aren't not allowed.

Game(s): Red Pokémon Type: Water Single/Ultimate: Single So I did loads of monotype challenges a while ago and I figured they were too easy (with the exception of gen 4 Bug, even WITH items that was a nightmare), so I'm going to shake it up a bit this time, and I'm going to do a Monolocke, with additional rules being banning X items as I think they're way too broken esp in gen 1 with badge boost glitch, and shift mode only. So water monotype + standard nuzlocke rules with the exception that, if there's at least one water Pokemon on a route, I can catch the first one I see. If not, I skip the route entirely. If i find this fun i may change this into an ultimate. |

RL Notes: After having misplaced my 3DS, then got a new job for my hobby (I moonlight as a composer/arranger/orchestrator, so got involved in a local group on that front that kept me from doing more for a while), and then finding my 3DS, I'm back to continue my Gen 4 run. Had to remember where I was...and then admit I didn't remember Gen 4's progression, so I'm using a walkthrough to point me from area to area.
Onto the update. Running around in circles up and down Cycling Road trying to remember where to go was...ahem..."bugging" me out. What I ended up doing was looking up that I was supposed to be going down to the southern part of Mt. Coronet and heading through to Hearthome City. I quickly did the stuff about the contests, because I can't move on otherwise. The battle against Barry was...kinda weird. - First out is Starly, and I had Cellular/Dustox to just spam Poison Sting. I was hoping to Poison it before I was Wing Attack'd to death. Interestingly, I managed to use Moonlight to stay alive through it dying from Poison. First try Poison on the first hit, which I about fell over laughing at. I know, though, if I don't win this time, it won't happen next. - Second was Monferno...who did nothing the first few turns but Fury Swipes, Leer, and Mach Punch. Was expecting AI to go "Oh crap, let's burn this bug". I did eventually let Cellular/Dustox faint due to a single use of Flame Wheel...on the same turn (turn 6 against Monferno) using Poison Sting (and it getting poisoned). - At this point, I swapped over to T-Mobile/Vespiquen. Power Gem time. That finishes off the Monferno. - Out comes Buizel. I just use a couple Gusts to knock it out. In between the two Gusts, I got a Pursuit for my trouble. No biggie. - Roselia ends the round, and I Gust my way to victory. Like I said...the opening felt weird. I'm used to random AI, and I'm used to semi-smart AI. Moving on to Route 209, and I attempt to avoid a spinner only for the trainer to notice me anyways. Yay. I wanted to get to the next town first, so I avoided everything except the Double Battle. It was sort of rough. I did fight a few things to figure out my Hidden Power on Sprint/Beautifly and Verizon/Wormadam. Verizon's HP was easy. Sprint’s took a bit to figure out. Cricket (Kricketune) L 23 / 76 HP / 48 Atk / 31 Def / 33 SAtk / 35 SDef / 39 Spd Fury Cutter / Bide / Sing / Leech Life T-Mobile (Vespiquen) L 23 / 69 HP / 48 Atk / 51 Def / 44 SAtk / 57 SDef / 35 Spd Gust / Sweet Scent / Power Gem Sprint (Beautifly) L 23 / 67 HP / 44 Atk / 38 Def / 45 SAtk / 32 SDef / 39 Spd Harden / Hidden Power (Dragon) / Stun Spore / Morning Sun Cellular (Dustox) L 23 / 61 HP / 28 Atk / 44 Def / 31 SAtk / 46 SDef / 42 Spd Tackle / Moonlight / Poison Sting / Protect Verizon (Wormadam/Steel) L 24 / HP 70 / 38 Atk / 55 Def / 36 SAtk / 53 SDef / 28 Spd Protect / Tackle / Hidden Power (Ice) / Confusion |
Don't want to double-post, but made some progress over the last two days.
Veilstone City: Got here late Monday. Route 215 was kinda rough to get through. Spent much of the night and a few hours yesterday grinding coins at the Game Corner to get U-Turn, and gave it to my Vespiquen, but only after finishing the gym (totally didn't know it was there). It was going to make the best use of it. I totally spaced on the gym being Fighting-type...my Bugs are squishy so they kept knocking my mons out. In the end, however, I'm happy Wormadam has Confusion and Vespiquen has Gust. Between the tw of them, that's how I got through the gym. Trainer by Trainer, one by one, healing as needed. It wasn't too bad, but after that, I spent some time going through and grinding all of my team up to 28 or 29. Also took the opportunity to earn some money and buy more Super Potions but also some vitamins to boost the main attacking stat of each of my team. I'm going to be continuing that. The gym was way too rough for my taste - I can tell that I totally did not restart for good stats...nor did I correctly EV train like I planned to. Pastoria City: The path south from Veilstone on the way to Pastroia was kinda interesting. Some battles were easy, and some were slogs. I skipped a number of them, figuring that since Crusher Wake was only a lowly Water type, I should be fine at level 30. Nope. He absolutely was wiping the floor with me (which was a shock to my system since all the trainers were relatively easy to knock to the side). Gyarados took some doing to knock out. I got it down to about 20/25% HP with my Vespiquen using Power Gem over and over, then Vespiquen was out for the count. After that, my Beautifly and Dustox went down before Gyarados did. I was using HP/Dragon and Tackle, trying to hold on for using Kricketune and Wormadam against Quagsire and Floatzel. Floatzel was next, and I...hate...Brine. It took out my Wormadam, because I forgot it doubles its Base Power when my health is low. Kricketune took it out with X-Scissor. And then I just spammed X-Scissor against Quagsire, hoping to knock it out. Thankfully, I did. At this point, I need to focus on trying to start a gym at the level of the highest Pokemon in the gym. Starting anywhere below that is a problem when I get to the gym leader. For me, that means I need to focus the rest of my training on EVs. Sure, I'm behind a little, but I need to do more in-depth study and not just pick up the game and go "let's do this!" I need to get some of those stat-reducing Berries. For now, here's where I'm at: Cricket (Kricketune) L 31 / 99 HP / 64 Atk / 41 Def / 44 SAtk / 45 SDef / 52 Spd Fury Cutter / Bide / Sing / X-Scissor T-Mobile (Vespiquen) L 31 / 90 HP / 65 Atk / 68 Def / 58 SAtk / 76 SDef / 46 Spd U-turn / Slash / Power Gem / Heal Order Sprint (Beautifly) L 30 / 85 HP / 56 Atk / 49 Def / 59 SAtk / 40 SDef / 51 Spd Mega Drain / Hidden Power (Dragon) / Stun Spore / Morning Sun Cellular (Dustox) L 30 / 77 HP / 35 Atk / 56 Def / 46 SAtk / 59 SDef / 55 Spd Tackle / Moonlight / Psybeam / Protect Verizon (Wormadam/Steel) L 31 / HP 88 / 49 Atk / 70 Def / 48 SAtk / 67 SDef / 36 Spd Metal Sound / Mirror Shot / Hidden Power (Ice) / Confusion |
Well I'm done. Surpringsly, Flareon was my best member of the team ._.

Over the past two weeks, I did some research on my movesets and decided, based on base stats and move categories, that Kricketune and Vespiquen are solely Attack-based, while Dustox, Beautifly, and Wormadam are Special Attack-based. I didn't keep as good of track of my effort values. But I didn't want too close of calls again like I had with the last two gyms (especially the Water one, where I wasn't necessarily strong or weak to). I decided to go up a bunch of levels...
First, I when back to Route 214, where there are two very good trainers. One is all about Roselia (good for SpA) and one is all about Goldeen (good for Atk). Time to grind. Got Wormadam to 46...then got Beautifly to 44...then Dustox to 43....you can see I'm slowing down with bothering to level...I could maybe handle an hour or two a day... Then I did the same on the other trainer to get Kricketune and Vespiquen to reach level 40. Spent a bit of time at the game corner to get some coints as well. At this point, I look like this: Cricket (Kricketune) L 40 / 126 HP / 94 Atk / 52 Def / 56 SAtk / 57 SDef / 66 Spd Fury Cutter / Bide / Bug Buzz / X-Scissor (Just one simple change. Yes, Bug Buzz is a special move, but it still has STAB.) T-Mobile (Vespiquen) L 40 / 114 HP / 96 Atk / 87 Def / 74 SAtk / 97 SDef / 58 Spd Attack Order / Slash / Power Gem / Heal Order (No real change - Attack Order is, in my opinion, better for a monotype run than U-Turn.) Sprint (Beautifly) L 44 / 129 HP / 83 Atk / 69 Def / 100 SAtk / 57 SDef / 73 Spd Giga Drain / Hidden Power (Dragon) / Stun Spore / Morning Sun (Upgraded Mega Drain to Giga Drain, Stun Spore to Psychic, and Morning Sun to Bug Buzz. Not too sure about HP Dragon, though I will keep it around for now.) Cellular (Dustox) L 43 / 115 HP / 49 Atk / 79 Def / 78 SAtk / 83 SDef / 76 Spd Bug Buzz / Silver Wind / Psybeam / Light Screen (I thought Light Screen would be better than Protect.) Verizon (Wormadam/Steel) L 46 / HP 126 / 70 Atk / 102 Def / 89 SAtk / 97 SDef / 52 Spd Psybeam / Mirror Shot / Hidden Power (Ice) / Psychic (Update on some moves. My uncertainty on Beautifly's HP is making me uncertain here...) Burned out for now. I never realized how much just straight grinding can drain you. |

Good morning everybody.
Dropping by to say that I'll be helping with the updating the thread for the foreseeable future, and I think I got the OP updated all to deal with posts up to #389. If I accidentally missed you or something like that, either post here or send me a message! You might have also noticed that the OP looks a bit different. I condensed a bit of the text, added a few rulings that were in the spirit of the older rules, cleaned up house basically. Still, any runs you've already started (or committed to making, in the case of Ultimates) can still use the older rules if you feel like it. Here are the rule changes and their justifications: Spoiler:

Johto's coming up next. I still need to figure out what team I'll use but hey, I'm bound to have more choices earlier on, at least. I guess I'll probably be able to try and do bigger teams at least. |
Ultimate Electric Monotype Fire Red | Soul Silver | Omega Ruby | Platinum | Black 2 | X | Ultra Sun Did I say Johto? Oops, we're in Kalos. Update #1 - Viola, Grant Spoiler:
Team Spoiler:
Korrina and Ramos should be easy enough given FSK, I think. The pace should also pick up from here on out which is nice. |

Type: Water Game(s): Let's Go Pikachu, SoulSilver, Omega Ruby, Platinum (Brilliant Diamond if it comes out and I get it before I finish), White 2, Y, Ultra Moon, Sword (Optional) Single / Ultimate: Ultimate |
Ultimate Electric Monotype Fire Red | Soul Silver | Omega Ruby | Platinum | Black 2 | X | Ultra Sun I just noticed that when I did the last update, I forgot to remove the Leftovers from the team template I was using lol. I hadn't any Leftovers then, nor do I have now. Although I think I probably could muster some in Lumiose, somewhere. Update #2 - Korrina, Ramos, Clemont, Valerie, Olympia Spoiler:
Team Spoiler:
Up next we finish up the plot, the league challenge and the game. Update #3 - Plot, Wulfric, Elite 4 & Champion Spoiler:
Team Spoiler:
Up next, Hoenn. I wanna get rid of the 3DS games ASAP since they take up a lot more time than the other games. |
Ultimate Electric Monotype Fire Red | Soul Silver | Omega Ruby | Platinum | Black 2 | X | Ultra Sun In what's becoming a tradition, I get the game wrong. Again. Oops? Update #1 - Final Spoiler:
Team Spoiler:
Next time, it will be Hoenn. Or maybe Sinnoh, I guess. Depends on my mood to be honest, but I'm pretty sure it won't be Alola. |
Can you put me down as a bug champion for shield? It was a while back that I did it.

Ultimate Poison Monotype I'm back again after a long absence.Just got done with pokemon Y so now it's onto probably the hardest game of the run in emerald. Why I think emerald will be the hardest is I'm gonna be stuck with only a dustox for the first gym As for the team that finished kalos it was mega Venusaur, Drapion, Tentacruel, Crobat, Nidoking and Swalot I started out using a beedrill before swapping it out for the endgame. And it was on the team for quite a while. hope its okay changing up the team mid run Drapion and Crobat are gonna be mainstays on every team I can get them. I intend to save SoulSilver for last as that is not only my favorite pokemon game, but my favorite game overall. |
Got a question about gen V. Is it possible to get or trade in a poison type before the first gym. Hacking is out of the question since I'm not using an emulator. If i cant get a poison type without hacking can someone tell me what types are available for Ultimate runs without hacking in pokemon?

Not sure for Black 2 and White 2 out of the top of my head. That said, it's generally up to the person to do the research themselves. I'd recommend pulling up a website like Bulbapedia or Serebii who have the encounter tables for each route and check. Walkthroughs are even more convenient for this type of checking since they'll list every route in the order you'll go through. As a rule, Grass, Fire and Water are always possible because of the starters, and Normal is always possible because of the derps. Flying isn't possible in BW, but is possible in every other game. Fairy is possible in the three mandatory games that it's in (XY, ORAS, SM/USUM) as well. Not sure about Sword and Shield though, but it probably is given the Wild Area. |

Type: Bug Game(s):Firered,SoulSilver,Emerald,Diamond,White 2,Y,Ultra moon Single / Ultimate: ultimate Putting my poison run on hold after the updated rules made my choice of type no longer viable for me. This run in particular has an additinal stipulation and that is that hacking in pokemon is not allowed. Hence why I've picked the bug type for the ultimate run. Out of all the types available with the no hacking stipulation Bug seemed the most fun. Though it will be pretty difficult. Especially for Sinnoh and kanto. |
