Pokemon: Infernal Pit of 100 Trials (+ version 1.2 for the regular Pit of 100 Trials)

Infernal Pit of 100 Trials:
Spoiler:

Playing the original Pit of 100 Trials first is advised (but not necessary), as it teaches the player on how the entire concept of a pit of 100 trials works.

"Infernal Pit of 100 Trials" is a alternate version of the normal "Pit of 100 Trials", with the main focus of the hack being an increased difficulty. It has the bugfixes, grammar fixes and quality of life changes that were introduced in the 1.2 patch of the original hack. It fixes some of the more severe exploits of the original hack, changes opponent teams to be more dangerous and evens the playing field between the opponent pokemon and player pokemon.

This hack is mainly targeted to people who enjoyed the original Pit of 100 Trials and want an alternative challenge. Due to the changes, some strategies are nowhere nearly as effective as they used to be, making the experience different enough to not fell the same in terms of teambuiliding and battling. The tips and the opponent team chart for the original hack may not apply for this version.

Change list:
Spoiler:
-Features all the quality of life changes, grammar fixes and bugfixes that were introduced in the "Pit of 100 Trials 1.2" version (except the Endure move tutor (read further to see explanation on why))

1.2 changes present here:
Spoiler:
-Bugfixes and grammar corrections
-Vermilion City trash can puzzle is automatically solved
-Added Master Ball and Big Mushroom dispenser to the mart, to make shopping faster
-Linoone learns Extremespeed
-Pikachu and Raichu learn Volt Tackle
-Blissey learns Wish
-Frustration TM is replaced with Sleep Talk
-Move Deleter added

-Player can no longer gain EVs on their Pokemon. Neither by Vitamins, nor wild battles
-All wild Pokemon have 31 IVs in all stats (to make catching team members faster)
-Hidden Power TM replaced with Endure (this is due to the IV change, breaking the function of Hidden Power completely in this version)
-Blissey no longer learns Softboiled and the move was replaced by Recover (due to Blissey having enormous HP and also being able to take hits from special attackers for almost free, it was way too good at fully healing your entire team in between battles with very little resources lost. This doesn't nerf its battle capabilities whatsoever)
-Your entire team is automatically fully healed before entering the pit
-A story continuation of the previous pit of 100 trials (yes, it did have a story)
-For all of you who know where to find the easter egg, it now has a new reward for finding it and finishing the pit (but might also be quite meaner in some ways to obtain)

BATTLE CHANGES
-Boss trainers that were redundant type specialists were replaced with different boss trainers
-All opponent trainers use custom, more optimal movesets and have some changed team members
-Healing items can't be used in battle

ITEM/SHOP CHANGES
-No money is gained on winning trainer battles
-Shopkeepers with basic healing items (Potions, Ethers, Elixirs and Revives) are found inside the pit itself (so no need to 100% fully prepare before entering the pit)
-Soul Dew cost massively increased
-Choice Band cost increased

Plot:
Spoiler:
(Wait, you seriously care about that? I thought you care about the challenge here. Whatever)
The big bad owner of the first Pit of 100 Trials is back. And he is back for vengeance. He is threatening the entire world to bring him the child that beat him previously. He has a new pit for the child to try out. Now, out brave hero has to journey through an edgier, eviler, harder version of the pit he conquered a long time ago. Can our hero succeed? Or will the entire world be engulfed in an everlasting darkness? Find out in the next butt clenching hack by Manekimoney.

Additional credit for this version:
-avantimaestro for finding a way to disable money gain from trainers (found on ASM resource thread)

Changelog:
Spoiler:
1.0- Original
1.01- Polished trainer movesets (no Explosion on last pokemon in team (they won't use it, unless it's the only move), fixed a few illegal moves on trainer Pokemon, removing gimmicky Trick and Covet sets as they don't work)
1.02- Fixed an illegal move on an Absol using Crunch (who at Gamefreak decided that was a good idea?). It uses Shadow Ball now instead (held item was also replaced with Spell Tag instead of Blackglasses)

A little background on the development of the hack
Spoiler:
If you don't know already, for every April 1st, ever since I started hacking, I released a small joke hack. The first one was simple and very uninteresting, the second one was creative but also somewhat lazy.
This year, I was thinking of creating a hack where all your Pokemon are pernamently poisoned (it seems that the world wanted it to happen, since it would line up with the recent events). But it turned out that it doesn't provide any tension or anything, as I hoped. It just becomes a more tedious Fire Red, where it's harder to get levels and you run out of money to beat the Elite Four at the end of the hack. LAME!
Thankfully, I still had time to make this instead. Sadly, it isn't a joke hack.

Introduction
This hack takes the concept that was introduced in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, where there is a challenge area (The pit of 100 trials). There, you have to battle 100 different enemies that appear all throughout the game, with progressing difficulty and it has a superboss and a reward at the end.
While this hack doesn't exactly have a pit in the literal sense, I think the name still fits for what it tries to accomplish.

In this hack you can easily get yourself any team of Pokemon you want, EV train them almost instantly and battle 100 battles that represent the progression throughout Fire Red.
For example, you start with battling Bug Catchers, then you battle Youngsters, then Brock, then Rocket Grunts in Mt. Moon, then Nugget Bridge trainers, etc.
Of course these trainers are only the same by the type of Pokemon they use. Their Pokemon are all level 100 and can be from any Generation from 1-3.
You battle these types of trainers up to a certain point. The final 10 trainers are all a bit more special.

Features
- 2 versions of the hack: a Normal version and the Double battles version
- 100 level 100 trainers to battle in a row
- All "balanced" fully evolved Pokemon easily catchable + some non-fully evolved ones
- Easy EV training (just give 4 vitamins of a single type to max out a single stat (for example, 4 PROTEINs will give 252 ATK EVs in total))
- Move Tutor that can teach almost any non-TM move
- Buy the items you want for the pit with limited money. Spend carefully!
- A loss is a GAME OVER!
- A different story. A barebones one, but a story nonetheless
- With the hack releasing close to Easter, of course it has to have an easter egg
- You get more money to buy items in the Double battle version, since it can be quite harder at times

How the hacks works
Spoiler:
You start by getting 50 Masterballs (check your PC) , 1 copy of every TM in the game and catch yourself a team of Pokemon that you want.
You can only catch fully evolved Pokemon that are allowed in the Emerald Battle Frontier, others are not avaliable.
You can then use the Move Tutor and TMs (remember, only 1 copy of each TM) to make their movesets better.
The Move Tutor can teach your Pokemon any move that they can learn in Fire Red, including egg moves and other Move Tutor moves (except for some useless moves + some Pokemon get elemental punches that they could only get in Emerald otherwise).
The Dept. Store has access to free Master Balls, free Big Mushrooms (for the Move Tutor), free Vitamins (that can easily max out EVs) and many items that you will need in the pit.
It is important to buy items wisely since money is limited, or you could not even have a chance of clearing "the pit".
Once you enter "the pit", you cannot exit.
Every regular trainer has 2 Pokemon. Trainers that were story important in Fire Red can have more than that.
You can heal in between battles by using your items.
If you lose a battle it's game over, and you either have to reload your save or start a new game with a different team and items.

Bonus challenge (that is more true to the original Paper Mario pit) for those feeling like it:
Spoiler:
Anyone can beat this by saving and reloading between each battle, to have a good outcome. But can you beat it froms start to finish without reloading? It is possible, however it probably won't be easily doable in the first try. After about 4 test runs I could memorize what the team for most of the trainers is, so I could prepare accordingly for them and know which tactics work on specific Pokemon (on both single and double version of the hack). But because I know how short the attention span is these days, you can check out this chart that shows all the Pokemon that the trainers have. Be warned that you still might have to learn which stategies work best on some Pokemon:

Also don't check this out if you don't wanna get a bit spoiled

Tips
Spoiler:
- Speed and Attack/Special Attack are the most important stats
- Choice Band OP
- You can sell TMs that you won't use for some extra money.
- You can save TMs for the pit and teach them at the point when you actually need them
- Talk to the NPCs. They have some tips on their own
- Having multiple moves with the same STAB can be useful for having more PP for a move type
- Don't teach TMs to Pokemon before you check the Move Tutor. TMs are one use only, Move Tutor is infinite
- Try to at least have a nature that raises a good stat for your Pokemon
- Having a good mix of Potions, Ethers/Elixirs and Revives is cruical
- Even if Revives are expensive, they are probably the most important items. Don't be a cheapskate!
- Just because the item is more expensive than others, doesn't mean that you will have a better use for it!

Special changes
Spoiler:
- Return now has 102 base power at all times (Frustration is unchanged)
- Pickup is gone
- Payday gives no money
- Some useless moves cannot be learned by the Move Tutor (that's because the Tutor can only have 18 moves to learn at the same time. Pokemon with very big movesets were otherwise unable to learn some moves that they should)
- Scyther, Onix, Pikachu and Clamperl are catchable along with all the other fully evolved Pokemon

Known bugs/oddities:
Spoiler:
- Free items can only be bought 1 at a time, so it can take a while. Use dispensers to get some of those items faster
- If you play the Double battle version and have only 1 Pokemon alive in your party, the battles will be somewhat glitched, with you having 2 copies of the same Pokemon on your side, however if one of them faints, you lose the entire battle

Version history:
Spoiler:
1.1 -Unown is no longer catchable, because it caused a crash when encountered. Apologies to all people who wanted to attempt an Unown only solo run.

1.2 -Bugfixes and grammar corrections
-Vermilion City trash can puzzle is automatically solved
-Added Master Ball and Big Mushroom dispenser to the mart, to make shopping faster
-Linoone learns Extremespeed
-Pikachu and Raichu learn Volt Tackle
-Blissey learns Wish
-Frustration TM is replaced with Sleep Talk
-Added an Endure move tutor, just outside the house of the regular move tutor
-Move Deleter added

Yet another unorthodox hack from you! This is on my to play list!

Looks legit. I might try it out for something new once my tablet is fixed next week.

This hack is insane...made it to #91 pretty much exclusively using a Latios (+ Soul Dew + X Items). Will need to rethink my strategy to finish the last 10 trainers!

ashamaxa April 19th, 2020 6:48 PM

Man, this is such an interesting idea. I will try it tonight to as soon as i can. Good work!

Yeah, that thing is pretty busted. Of course, it's a whole different challenge to do it without saving between trainers.

reddeadxqz April 20th, 2020 10:28 AM

Found a bug in the singles version! In the room in which you find Espeon (and others I don't remember), if you go up to the right corner the trainer gets stuck and you can't move him or do anything else :(

Found out what caused it. If you encounter an Unown, the game crashes. Probably something to do with the game not knowing which Unown form to load or something along those lines. Unown is now removed in version 1.1. Apologies to all people who wanted to attempt an Unown only solo run.

The only thing I wish was that there was a physical/special split optional patch. This is fun as heck even without it though! I'd love to see this done on HG/SS, if it's even possible. Hmmm... Maybe I'll try it...

I tried to keep it as close to gen 3 mechanics as possible. I do think a gen 4 version could be possible, since this is one of the simpler hacks, but I don't have any hacking knowledge of the gen 4 games (not to mention, it would be pretty hard to test them on my PC, since it sucks).

Chronosplit April 29th, 2020 11:51 AM

This is a neat idea, kinda reminds me of the battle pyramid or the game boy game Cave Noire in a way.

Looking at the last screenshot also reminds me, there's a way to let permadeath happen. I once made a patch based on some info in Research and Development (I think it was in the quick thread, it was years back), where if you lost the game would reset and delete your save. Perhaps that would be preferable to Trainer Jail for some?

Vloshko October 11th, 2020 1:17 AM

Can't for the life of me find the PC, for swapping pokemon. PC in bedroom doesn't have pokemon storage option.

Enter the very top building. It has the interior, similar to that of the Trainer Tower. There you can find a PC.

I found a highly useful exploit to make it through the pit, but you have to make sure you only switch it in on certain Pokémon, in order to continue using it. I think I found the right balance of Revives, Max potions, Full heals and Ethers, too. With this strategy, and the team I came up with, alongside optimal item uses and plays, this can be beatable with no items in battle, set mode, and no save state abuse (I don't count my 1st win since I did use save states, but I was going in blind, and was learning strategy.).

Personally, I wish there was a name rater that is accessible, since I like nicknaming Pokémon, but it gets tedious if I have to nickname like 30 of the same species if I'm going for optimal stats.

This is one of the hardest ROM hacks to beat without save states, and it's one of my favorites!

I'm very glad you enjoy it. I have not seen someone beat the pit with Set mode yet, so that's interesting. The opponent trainer teams sheet exists purely so players don't have to rely so much on remembering every single opponent pokemon every run (unless they like it blind of course).
Sorry for the lack of the Name Rater. He didn't really came to mind when making the hack, since the hack is so combat focused and I never nickname my pokemon.

Another question: Last night, I had the inspiration to make a spin−off of this, but with the Pokémon Emerald engine. May I have your permission (you can DM me) to use ideas from your hack (like item prices, concept of the game, etc.) into my spin−off? I will try to remember to credit you once I can publish it.

Just a question: do enemy trainers have EVs in their stats?

No, they don't. Mainly due to the fact that beating 100 of them in a row with EVs would be nightmarish and would need a huge rebalancing of the starting money (and I also don't know how to give trainers EVs yet).
If you want to have a sorta similar experience as the trainers having EVs, you can not give them to your pokemon and try to beat it, but I wouldn't recommend it :P

Don't you need to set this value in Gen 3 Tools?

If that value doesn't actually affect trainers' EVs, then what does it do?

Edit: I found this in this game's data, too:

Edit: I found this in this game's data, too:

Maybe it spreads some EVs evenly throughout all stats (not that I would have a clue). In the Advance Trainer Editor, it lists it as "AI value", whatever that means. I just thought it meant how "smartly" the pokemon uses its moves
EDIT: In the Fire Red dissasembly, it is called "iv".

UPDATE:
It's April Fools which means it's time for me to upload a hack. Sadly, again, not a joke hack.
This time, it's an alternate version of a hack I already made. Why? Well, I know for sure that this hack has the number of fans in AT LEAST single digits.

Infernal Pit of 100 Trials is a difficulty increasing hack of the original Pit of 100 Trials. It's mainly for players who enjoyed the original one. Due to the changes, some strategies are nowhere nearly as effective as they used to be, making the experience different enough to not fell the same in terms of teambuiliding and battling. Read more about it in the new, slick first post of the thread.

Additionally, the original pit of 100 trials also got a 1.2 version with quality of life changes, bugfixes and grammatcial error corrections. All of these are also present in the Infernal Pit of 100 Trials.

I hope you enjoy this different take on the pit.

ShinyTillDawn March 31st, 2021 3:47 PM

Still no name rater? I want a refund!! (Just kidding, it's whatever.)

I'm pumped to play the infernal version. Just saying, when I played v1.1 of this, I wish (no pun intended) Blissey had Wish, and it would have been more broken. Wish on Blissey could still be broken, even with pre-gen 5 mechanics...

...but you can't EV Train in defense, so........

I'm going to think of a new strategy for the Infernal version!

No name rater, because it doesn't matter :)
Also, yeah, the previous version lacked some obscure moves, since they were event exclusive and it's hard to find documentation on which Pokemon got which event moves. I added some of the more cruical ones that were somewhat a core part of a pokemon's kit.
If anyone thinks I forgot some other important event move, they can remind me.

OOhhh, cool I'll have to check this out. :)

New AND has fans numbering in at least the single digits!!

better than anything I've made already, pretty sure I'm literally in the single digit, not including me. ;)
