yeah it's prolly gon be some weird dystopia where there's no open outside spaces anymore what with every square inch of land being taken over by buildings. walk ways? entrances? what do you need those for anymore?

So who is displaying a Christmas tree this year? If so, have you had any trouble shopping for one?

I drove to 5 different lots today + department stores, but everywhere that I normally find fresh cut trees for sale this time of year had sold out. Usually I am able to find trees at the last minute. In fact it's a good time to get big trees for the a tiny fraction of the price, especially on Christmas Eve. My tree hunt so far has been a bust though. I thought it would be nice to get brand new pine, fir or spruce tree this afternoon and display it lit up for the first time tomorrow on the Winter Solstice, but it seems I waited too long.

We have a tree up in the front room, although it's just the plastic one this year - didn't seem like much point in going all out with the decorations when nobody is coming to visit. Mother said she wouldn't have bothered with that if she'd known that my brother was going to be in Tier 4, so he won't be able to come home for Christmas =x

For the last few years we'd had massive things that take up at least a quarter of the living room though. xD

Caite-chan December 20th, 2020 11:47 AM

I haven't had a tree up for many years. You can blame the cats for that...lol.

Starlight December 20th, 2020 5:57 PM

We haven't put a tree up yet because of illness. Yesterday I ended up in tears because I couldn't face it yet again and my partner forced me to admit that I just can't do it, so we're officially skipping it this year.

I tried wrapping presents today - I normally do all the wrapping - and I had to quit half way through the first one. She was right, as usual, and now she has all the wrapping to do by herself as reward ;)

I actually expected a lot of unsold trees this year, guess I was wrong!

We have a fake one that looks very much like the real thing. I know they're not the same, but we don't have to worry about getting one. Of course, it means storing it all year...

Most of our family live in Scotland, so no cross border travel :(

I thought it would be that way too! As unlikely as it would seem Christmas tree sales have apparently shot through the roof, with businesses selling out of all their trees soon as Thanksgiving from what I now hear. I read something about people buying trees in growing numbers because we humans are desperate for something to lift the spirit now in times of trouble, and that folks who don't even normally decorate are doing it for the first time.

There are definitely some fabulous-looking artificial trees. My aunt has an especially beautiful one she uses every year that looks fit for a movie set. I wouldn't mind going that route. It's more economical in the long run because it's a one-time purchase, they can be fire-resistant, you don't have to go through the tiring work of stuffing a tree into the back of your car every year, unloading it and hauling 50 cumbersome pounds into your house, there's no mess of falling pine needles to clean up around your home either. But my mom is extremely sentimental and particular about having a real evergreen in the house every year like she remembers as a child, and not a synthetic one. The scent of trees is something she is very attached to, and I do also enjoy the crisp, minty scent of the mind in the air. It feels fresh and clean, and it's relaxing. However, I can be happy with any type of tree I think. Each have their advantages.

I'm going to try one more time to find a real tree before/after work tomorrow. There's one family business I found on Facebook that was advertising Christmas trees and wreaths as of two days ago, so they might have a couple left yet. If they're also a dead end though I'll try searching garden shops for a potted live tree. It won't be as a big as a Christmas Tree, but we can still decorate it and it will also make the house smell nice. This live tree can also be planted afterward and grow in the backyard as a bonus :)

Roni December 20th, 2020 11:43 PM

getting real trees hasn't ever been a thing here in the Philippine for obvious reasons.

my family does indeed have a full size artificial tree, but i think the last time we ever put it up was 2016 or so. mom was always the one to constantly push to get it up, and the rest of the family would just follow along. now that we don't have someone who's as passionate about decorations as she was, the house just stays as it is. we buy good food at the very least.

VisionofMilotic December 21st, 2020 4:57 PM

The heavens were generous to me today.
I went to 4 different venues today in search of Christmas trees and all of the lots were empty. The fifth place I ventured was Lowe's Home Improvement. My plan was to take a walk through the garden shop and see if they had any live cedar trees that I could sit atop the cupboard, or on the dining room table or the mantelpiece over the fireplace in the living room. I had lost hope of getting a real Christmas tree, and had moved my goal post just to getting real greenery to freshen up the house. Low and behold though, as I got out of the car I saw real Christmas trees for sale on the sidewalk!

They were all big, bushy, tall, healthy fir trees, and starting at the fair price of 49.99 dollars. I was so excited and happy because I didn't believe I would even find a Christmas tree. I had gone to a different Loewe's on the opposite side of town the other day on my tree hunt, and store clerks told me that they were all out of real ones. I didn't think to visit their sister store, but so glad that I did!

Anyway after so many hours shopping I am relieved that I didn't come home empty handed. I was in such a jolly mood that I was able to lift a 6 ft tree by myself, load it up in the back seat without much difficulty and carry it from the driveway into my home quite quickly. /Flexes muscles

My family has used the same artificial tree for like 23 years. Some ornaments are also very old. We keep thinking about getting a new tree but it's hard because that single tree and the various ornaments are filled with so many memories.

My dad has ones my grandparents owned, they could honestly be worth something. They're made of wood and painted.

Megan December 24th, 2020 12:15 AM

A very peculiar situation I'm in: I bought a present for someone whom I'm not much in contact in. Because I didn't really know what to buy I went with something very basic, a better quality chocolate. And now when it's almost too late I got told that they're vegan now.

First takeaway: maybe talk to the person some time before buying presents for them, just in case something like that may have happened?
Second takeaway: I now have to improvise, somehow and it better be quick. xD

My feet feel stiff and sooo sore. Yesterday I saw a callus on the side of my left foot. The skin was really dry, tough and cracked, and the area was throbbing. I tried to be gentle with the feetsies from that moment on. I have done salt soaks, put lotion on my feet and fresh aloe vera, a heating pad over it, and thought that I would be right as rain this morning, but my foot feels worse than ever alas.

I have a newer pair of shoes that aren't as comfortable as they looked, and they probably rubbed me the wrong way. I did a lot of work-related standing also during this busy time, and on my way in I went to the park and collected a bunch of rocks to set around the Christmas tree to help balance it because the "good tree stand" has gone missing. Anyway to make a long story short, I did something recently, and now my feet are paying for it. Probably does not help that I like going barefoot at home, and we have stone and hardwood floors. I have also been doing a lot of extra household jobs as I care for a parent who is recovering from surgery, and can't do most of the things that they would normally do.

I put one of those analgesic creams with menthol on my foot to try to relieve the pain, but I still can't walk properly. I carry the left foot because it hurts when I put pressure on it, and hobble around with my right foot.

I don't think my feet are just callused, from what I have read and heard it shouldn't be as painful as this. I'm wondering if I may have sprained my foot during some activity. My mom had a look at my feet and said she thought it looked like bunions or it could be a bone spur. I will ask a doctor about it when the holidays are over and things are open for normal operation hours. It stings and burns right now, but doesn't seem like an emergency at this time. /Knocks wood
Hopefully it's something that will go away with a little tlc.

Believe me I'm ready to break my legs off at the hips. My body (mostly from the lower back down) needs to get use to working again. I've been closed down for most of the pandemic. With my job I'm on my feet running around ALLLLLLLLLLLLL DAAAAAAAAAAAYYYY! LOL! So I literally feel your pain when it comes to your feet.

I have been doing foot soaks and using Biofreeze and Tylonol when need be to help with the pain. I have a shin splint in my left leg that feels like growing pains as the best way to describe it and I have a bunion on my right foot. All sorts of fun for me...lol.

I'd say try to keep lotion or moisturizer on your feet and then put socks on. Hopefully you'll see some relief in a few days. You might also want to try a roller of some sort on your feet to help massage to bottoms of them.

Hope you feel better though. :D

I can walk for hours at a slow pace, but if you need me to keep up I'll tire.

My mother has to get two disks in her back removed from strenuous work all her life.

Starlight December 24th, 2020 5:28 PM

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays everyone!

I wish you all much peace, joy and happiness :)

same. my legs get sore after more than 2 hours of brisk walking. sucks that that's my natural inclination and i gotta consciously tell my body to slow tf down. it's no wonder i'm always sweating literally anytime i go out.

*cries* Tomorrow is back to normal for me. I don't want to go back. And, I feel sad just in general because Christmas is OVER! It was a great Christmas despite this crazy year. At least I have New Years day off. Idk about New Years Eve.

Sothis December 28th, 2020 5:43 PM

We had guests which made it fun. Best Christmas I had in a while.

Roni December 29th, 2020 2:07 AM

i miss the days before work life where December 25-30 were pretty much the chillest days of the week. now it's filled with projects and plans for the new year :c

pkmin3033 December 29th, 2020 6:09 AM

I make a point of booking off the last week of December (and first week of January, where I can get away with it...this year I couldn't) as annual leave so I can at least try and rest and recover a little before the new year.

...doesn't change January being the worst month of the year, but at least I can pretend for a little while that it isn't coming.

Roni December 29th, 2020 9:11 PM

i only recently got leave capabilities for my day job, while my other jobs are freelance gigs and i honestly do need the extra money. still starting out in the work force but hopefully it gets better as we go.

Noblejanobii December 31st, 2020 7:06 AM

I managed to land an interim job for the time being but I keep hoping I'll find something better in the near or distance future. I got completely ghosted by two companies that I interviewed with and I still haven't decided if it's because they're no longer considering me or if it's because the holiday season is upon us.
