239201* i liked his video on gen 2 as well, i shared the frustration with the pokemon distribution in gen 2, you mostly encounter gen 1 mons and a lot of gen 2 mons are just hard to get or too late in the game (houndour is only available in the post game in kanto ffs 😆)
i really like the lore and artstyle in gen 2

What were his arguments against gen 2?
I think my favourite is Gen 4, due to the new split between physical and special moves + the underground.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=75RibBHgJHQ here is the video, i like the part when he's just going through the gen 2 dex trashing every mon 😆 but yeah i think he is mostly talking from a nuzlocke/competitive pov

dont really hve a favourite ash i didnt watch the anime that much. i watched it most when it was the advanced series.

Gen 2 is my favorite just because I think it has the nicest atmosphere and I love the art style.

I think it improved over Gen 1 with more cultural aspects.

StCooler September 5th, 2021 11:31 PM

Gen 2 was my favourite due to the Pokémon following you + the two regions. Plus it felt like a proper sequel to Gen 1. Everything was improved.
But I prefered Heartgold/Soulsilver that combined Gen 2 improvements with Gen 4 improvements :)

And then Gen 3 introduced one of my main problems with Pokémon: they introduce stuff that they get rid of too easily in the next version.
Gen 2 introduced the following Pokémon + cumulative regions, Gen 3 removed them.
Gen 3 introduced the beauty contests, Gen 4 removed them.
And so on.

maggers September 6th, 2021 4:24 AM

239204* yeah thats what i like Zeo, there's just a nice feeling going through that region. they did the step up to colour perfectly i love what they did with the limitations, all the sprites and animated sprites in crystal feel so lively with only using black, white (transparent) and 2 colours. e.g. Scizors crystal sprite feels much more animated than its newer 3d models 😆
HG/SS were pretty good, i like the follow behind you feature from yellow. having the battle frontier was great too. i personally never bothered with the battle tower in crystal. i think battle frontiers are a must for post-games, they are great way to get even more casual players into thinking about strategies and you dont really have to grind and get iv perfect pokemon to be able to beat the frontier brains, maybe just EV train a little. cant believe they didnt have it in ORAS

Never really used the battle frontier and don't miss it either. Didn't even bother with the Battle Tower till much later either.
I do miss contests. I wasted so much time on those in gen 3 xD Oddly didn't spend all that much time on them in gen 6's ORAS though 🤔

Also congrats on breaching 2500 posts cooler 😊

I want to take this as a profile picture now XD
Slowpoke is a better "totem" for me than a badass predator from the past :(

I LOVE the battle frontier. However it has the same issue than VGC: you have to fully train your Pokémons with natures, EV, IV, egg moves and HM/TMs.

The follow feature being a remake-exclusive, though. But gen 2 had its own PokeWalker. It was this semi-transparent tamagochi-like device that you could hook up to your games via infrared, iirc, and that itself was just an improvement on the original yellow Pikachu-Walker. I actually had the latter one (well, borrowed it, to be exact). Unfortunately, someone stole it, so I had to pay compensation. ^^"
That PokeWalker might have also been the reason for why we got another one with the remakes. I actually need to take a look as to where I have left mine...

239208* lol love the new pfp cooler 👍 grats on 2.5k

No you won't just watch :P

I love Gen2 the most tbh. The improvements were incredible, while still feeling very much like the original games. Crystal finally allowed you to play as a girl too!

I find playing the first couple of gens really relaxing. A lot of the changes that came later didn't always work and the games have become far more complicated with time too. I mean, they're still awesome, but they don't feel like I'm just wandering around the countryside, exploring with my pokepals anymore.

I don't like how the later generations slowed down. And I'm not talking about gen 4 slowdown, but rather the pace of the gameplay. It's probably because of how the games got a lot more linear. I just like having the option to skip a Gym Leader, go to a new place, catch a Pokemon you "shouldn't" have at this point and then return later on after maybe beating a couple other Gym Leaders first. It's basically a new experience every time. Older games also made it easier for you to use weaker Pokemon. Like, I had an Onix on one of my teams in Blue and that thing actually carried itself quite well in fights.

StCooler September 7th, 2021 12:10 AM

239363

My personal feeling is that this freedom was not wanted by Game Freak in the first place ^^"
The issue with non-linear games, is that you can often be lost. See Dark Souls 1 or 2; they're not linear, but most players who don't take the right path will be lost (including when they do take the right path but end up locked because they don't see where to go next (example: in Blighttown, players can miss Quelaag, who is one of the main bosses of the game...)).
Now Game Freak targets young players so it makes sense to make Pokémon more linear.
I'm not saying they are right, nor wrong, I'm just guessing it's their reasonning and conclusion.

I missed gen 2 at the time when it was on GBC (had no GBC). Did grab a copy of Crystal VC though for 3ds, though that was mainly so I could catch Celebi =p
As such my intro to Johto was in HGSS and it was okay. Nothing particularly stands out to me tbh. I had no interest in apriballs at the time.

I'd have to ration my chocolate for that lol
sometimes I am, sometimes I'm not eating chocolate 😏
I could try drinking chocolate milk though, when I'm not eating chocolate 🤔

239365.

I played the older gens through emulators, then got them on virtual console.

Sad gen 3 hasn't seen some sort of re-release. It's not easy getting these games legitimately without paying like $200.

I did find a cheap copy of pokemon silver on amazon when I was 13, but lost it when we moved. I wish I had kept better track of it, but some things usually inevitably get lost during moves.

I still have my gens 1-3 games. Though only Blue and Sapphire were still playable with saving capabilities last time I checked...

You can actually play Gold and Silver on an old GB. Crystal was the only one that required a GBC.

I had Red, Ruby, Emerald, and Pearl, and I don't knowwhere these games are XD
My father probably threw them away when he moved house and I couldn't save them because I was 600 km away...

maggers September 8th, 2021 3:00 AM

239218* only have a few of my old games but i started collecting a lot of them a while ago, the prices have gone up a lot over the past 10 years and still going up. i was thinking of selling my collection but may as well hold on to them a bit more. pokemon cards too keep going up. Lol thats cool youre blue still saves. I think my yellow called it quits a few years ago.
i gotta say gen 2 is my fav as well, probably because it was my first one

Well anyway, it's too late for that =p

Overall, it feels like Gen 2 was the only generation for which Game Freak actually improved, you felt they worked hard and they had more in the tank. And then the whole gaming industry realised that with less effort you could sell the same, so...

maggers September 8th, 2021 8:24 AM

239221 haha i only found out recently you could play gold/silver on the original GB too.
so much stuff gets rushed idk how they can handle this many games. leaving another studio to work on the gen 4 remakes is a good step forward theyll have more time to work on legends. im looking forward to it but ive seen mixed reactions from the fanbase
also cant believe it is 29 degrees here today 😲and my gf is on holiday in spain yet it's hotter here lol

I actually saw someone playing Gold on a regular GB back when the games came out. And I still remember that to this day. Actually, you just need to look at the cartridge itself: if it has that cut-in corner at the top, it can be inserted into a regular Gameboy. The original Gameboy had this kinda safety mechanism that prevented the cartridge from being pulled out of the slot while the game was running.

I played my GBC games on a GBA a friend gave me when the NDS was released. Because it took time for my father to allow me to play videogames XD
He was right though. Look at me wasting my time on Dark Souls, LoL and making a Pokémon fangame.
