Same, I would've been planning a trip for last November if, y'know, stuff didn't happen. It'd be cool to go though, since there are a lot of places I'd love to check out, and apparently my dad wants to go to see family, so I have an easy way of convincing him to take me. The language barrier is absolutely terrifying to me though, I've never really been in that kind of situation and I can't imagine what it'd be like...

You're correct! I've only been posting Setsuna gifs so far but I'm considering branching out, since I'm sending repeats at this point. Will I? Who knows.~

I have been learning Japanese recently.

Japanese can be, uhhh... pretty intimidating to learn at first. I don't know all that much, just basic reading. I don't know a lot of vocabulary, and it gets overwhelming when there are three different "languages", with one having 2000 characters people typically learn that can be pronounced different ways depending on context...

I think this is a good time to try learning something like that, but I haven't been able to do much because self-teaching is just not my style, and I've had trouble in language classes in school. I've still done (very) simple translations from friends and I learn a lot from the kinds of things I'm into (mainly anime and idol games).
As I don't really know the language much either (I won't pretend to) I'm not sure how much help I can be, but I've got a few links and resources I've sent to other friends who have been interested in learning it so hey, maybe there's something. Best of luck, Ganbaruby!~

that's tough. i've always wanted to see for myself just how clean the streets actually are, since apparently that's what Japan is known for.

the language barrier is indeed something that hinders me from thinking about going there too much. folks don't have subtitles below them sadly, and i haven't anything about Japanese since that one college class i took :S

Japanese is pretty hard tho. I am learning Hiragana rn so hopefully it won't be too hard

Roni February 3rd, 2021 12:02 AM

ooh i know this! i think...

Hiragana is for native words and stuff, while Katakana is used for international/foreign labels? i dunno if i explained it right but i believe that to be the main gist of it.

Ecliptic February 3rd, 2021 12:08 AM

I was attempting to learn it and had the same problem, it was all written not spoken. I've lost all of it now after being ill for a while but I am determined to start again when I can!

Cool / not cool, bonus story.

I was once fluent in German. I don't remember it. My partner used to watch me talking to german people via text and face to face. She remembers me being fluent. Others do too. I can't remember the language or speaking it since some head related trauma issues. Brains are weird.

How was the class actually, I'm curious and wanna hear what you thought of it. The thing about not having subs is pretty relatable though...

That's crazy, wow... I can't say I've heard of something like that happening to anyone else I've known, but I've definitely thought about stuff like that.

And yes, I'm quoting you still, it's easier and it's funny that we all just constantly get dragged into this thread and have to deal with it, haha.

It is weird but my therapists have explained it to me numerous times and it makes sense when they say it! I can now understand forgetting something, think of it like a damaged memory chip or a tape getting wiped. That sort of makes sense. Something you have is being taken away.

What has never made sense to me is these peeps that wake up from comas with a different accent or speaking another language. How is that even possible? It makes zero sense, I can't get my brain around it. How can you gain something you haven't learned?

Anyway, quoting you too 😁

Roni February 3rd, 2021 8:00 PM

i've been quoted, and must respond accordingly before i head back to work :p

the teacher was actually pretty good! Filipino guy but super fluent in Japanese, or should i say Nihonggo. has a Japanese wife too and she was a cutie! it was legit a fun class & i learned quite a bit under him, but for some reason the only thing that really stuck with me was otsukaresama-desuka, and i can't even remember what that means anymore lmao.

heya sorry to hear about you losing your German fluency :< that's awesome to think about tho, a German-speaking Rapunzel :p

but like yea, i've heard those stories of people gaining a skill too. like that guy who was featured in a documentary in a while back who became really good at piano after taking a big hit to the head. and no he didn't have any sort of training prior at all. brains fonny

That's the thing, I understand losing something, but how on earth can you gain knowledge you haven't learned? The only thing I can think of is that those people were exposed to that language or skill, maybe watching others or tv etc, and even though they didn't learn it, their subconscious must have taken it in. Otherwise, as a girl of science, I can only conclude ... witches :)
