Fear of Darkness?
I gave this some thought. I was playing Silent Hill 2 in a room of pitch darkness, and now I'm writing this...in another room of pitch darkness. I also walked across the yard, again while it was dark. So while I can't say I have this fear, there's a point where I become immediately uneasy. Walking our dog and crossing the road into the wooded area, I just can't bring myself to do it. I always keep her near our property for night time bathroom breaks, for some reason that area is just unsettling. Probably an overactive imagination, but still.
Does anybody have a fear of darkness, or is it something you just ignore? |
I am on a lot more high alert at night time. Sudden sounds have my mind going places they don't normally go during the day time and I assume the worst.
i've always been afraid of what i can't see in the darkness, rather than the darkness itself. it makes me understand the quote "people fear what they don't know".
I've always been somewhat afraid of the dark, but it's definitely died down a bit as I've gotten older. My imagination used to run wild at night growing up and I'd think I was seeing things everywhere that I looked. Every now and then I'll focus a little too intently on the dark corner of the room and think that I'm seeing something, but more often than not I go to sleep with the tv on or when it's light outside so those moments are few and far between. It's like a morbid curiosity now moreso than fear... just wondering if that shifting figure looming just out of reach is real or not, and if it is, why it's wasting its time watching me struggle to fall asleep.
I've had a fear of the dark my entire life and it's varied across time, anywhere from "yeah not really" to "I'm too terrified to even turn off the light and get back to bed". Right now I'm in the latter because of course I am, it genuinely starts to feel a little debilitating when I can't even use the restroom at night even if I really need to because I'm afraid night-terrors that'll reveal themselves and... well, I never figured out what exactly they'd do but it's enough to make it difficult for me to turn the lights off so I can sleep. It sure is great being a grown adult and still having a fear of the dark :')

I don't think I'm afraid of the dark, so much as I'm suspicious of what might be in it. I'm too much of an edgelord to fear the darkness. :P
I did until I was eight. Now I need complete darkness to even think about sleeping, but bumping into shit is a downer.
For some reason I have never been uncomfortable in the dark, even as a small child. As an adult I find the dark calming. I like going on moonlit strolls in the night and watching the stars. I typically sleep in darkness, except for the glow of my Himalayan salt lamps. I leave them on not so much for the light but because they are natural air purifiers, and I hear they improve sleep and mood. I think they are also just pretty.
I have a tendency tough to put all the covers over my head though when I sleep to create the effect of pitch black. |
To a small extent. Sometimes going downstairs to the kitchen at night scares me a bit, and in those cases I have to go back up quickly lol. Fearing darkness to an extent is normal so I don't think about it much.
I do need absolute darkness to sleep though, even any small light will bother me. So in that regard I love it <3 |
I've never been afraid of the dark. Weirdly though, I still have (more) trouble sleeping in total darkness - doubly so if it's too quiet.
i'm less afraid of the dark than i am of what could be lurking in the dark.
i’m not afraid of the dark at all!
in this post “at all” means most of the time |
I had and still do to some extent have a fear of the dark. It used to be to the point I could never sleep in a dark room alone. I would get extremely anxious and be unable to sleep. As a child I hallucinated a ghost when I was waking up and it terrified me for years so I could never sleep in the dark after that. As I got older I would get super vivid sleep paralysis hallucinations and I had no idea what they were so I would start leaving the lamp on so I could fully see and check my room. Even now I can still fall asleep perfectly with the light on but my fear of the dark really hurt my sleep for a long time. These days I am less scared as I know what I'm seeing with sleep paralysis but I still get unease trying to fall asleep in a silent dark room and absolutely need ambience or noise. I also still feel pretty uncomfortable walking around the house when it is dark or walking outside past sunset by myself.
I was once assaulted at the dark of night by people who tried to rob me. But the dark itself is still not particularly scary.
I have a very active imagination so I'm somewhat afraid of the dark and I always had to sleep with some form of light at my parents. In my house now I'm not too bothered about the dark but our house is on a street so there's street lights. Basically if i can't see at all I feel uncomfortable. Its the same with the sea/ocean. If I cant see the bottom I freak.
Since installing blackout curtains in my apartment, it gets REALLY dark inside...so I have small automatic night lights in each part of the home to keep things illuminated. My clumsy self have tripped over stuff in the dark so many times that I had to add them. And yes, I do sleep with a night light. Sleeping in the dark really freaks me out
Yes, I'm absolutely terrified of the dark. I can't sleep without a lamp on. I don't know why, but the thought of being in a dark room with no lights on just scares me. I don't really like being outside in the dark, either. You never know who's out there...

Oh this got bumped.
I can't believe I finished silent hill 2 in February o_o. It feels like it was only 2 or 3 weeks ago. |
